By this point, the series had largely moved past dual-screen and touchscreen gimmicks, settling on putting the menus and map on the bottom screen with the action on top. Add in a dual-protagonist setup and you've got a recipe for a good metroidvania experience. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's likely got what you're looking for, and there's value in that. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, please visit our Patreon. Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about the long-in-the-making major league debut of gravity-defying, strikeout-celebrating reliever Jefry Yan, Steven Kwan’s resurgence, a lineup with lots of Juniors, a scooter celebration, a double FARTBAT, Luis Arraez abandoning home plate, MLB players’ low-stakes conspiracies, a head-to-head MVP battle, the Mets’ Francisco Lindor–Juan Soto drama, the A’s firing David Forst, a pitcher plate appearance, and more. Then (1:02:46) Ben brings on YouTubers Noah Campbell (aka SOFTDRINKTV) and Taylor McNelis (aka WildLion Games) to discuss the decline in the quantity and quality of sports video games, how well baseball lends itself to gaming, the golden age of baseball video games, and whether a few new challengers might endanger MLB The Show’s dominance. Text Us Here!Horror is punching way above its weight right now, and it's not an accident. We kick things off with quick life updates and entertainment news, then we get into the bigger question that's been hanging over theaters all year: why are smaller horror movies pulling people in while “guaranteed” blockbusters struggle to feel exciting? We talk through what's working, from low budget horror economics to the one thing audiences can't resist: originality that actually commits. Obsession becomes our main case study, because it's the kind of psychological horror that doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, it relies on choices, consequences, and that creeping feeling that something is deeply wrong. We debate where the villain line really starts, why the story hits so hard, and how horror can make you leave the theater feeling gross in a way that proves it did its job. From there, we widen the lens: superhero fatigue after Endgame, why Marvel trailers often show too much, and how practical effects and craft (shout out The Odyssey) can make a movie feel like an event again. We also trade horror recommendations, argue for anthology style storytelling as the genre's secret sauce, and shout out favorites like The Shining, The Conjuring, Hereditary, Midsommar, and Paranormal Activity 2.If you've been craving scary movies that feel fresh, or you're burnt out on franchise homework, hit play and come argue with us. Text Us Here!Everything feels better when the rules are clear, the stakes are fun, and you can play along from the couch. That's why we couldn't stop arguing about game shows, the classics we grew up on, the weird ones that aged badly, and the newer formats that crank the risk knob to max.We start by trying to define what even counts as a “game show” and immediately break our own brains. Is it only trivia and puzzles like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, or does any competition with a prize qualify? We go down the rabbit hole far enough to (jokingly) label sports as game shows, then climb back out to celebrate the stuff that actually shaped our TV childhoods: Supermarket Sweep chaos, American Gladiators energy, and the Nickelodeon era that had Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, and Guts locked in the after school hall of fame. Then we hit the darker side of the genre, like The Moment of Truth, where “winning” comes with real life consequences, and we talk about why that kind of discomfort TV works even when it feels gross. We also pitch the comeback we want most: Cash Cab rebuilt for the rideshare age, with rotating cities and surprise trivia for everyday riders. And because we can't end like normal people, we close with a brain fun fact about why your mouth muscles still activate when you read silently.Subscribe, share this with a fellow game show addict, and leave us a review with the one show you'd bring back. Ross takes us on a deep dive into the art of teaching. How do we respond when children's big play tips into dysregulation that takes over the group? Tom talks about taking responsibility when we decide to stop play. Joey reminds us that helping children stay regulated requires us to also be regulated, which can be hard to do in a chaotic environment. Mike thinks of a bell curve depicting regulation. Ideally, we can help children re-regulate before they slide over the top of the curve.

Games are supposed to be fun — so what happens when the logic of games, points and competition escapes the playground and starts reshaping everyday life? The novelist and games-writer Naomi Alderman and her guests explore how the joy of play collides with the pressures of a gamified society.Philosopher C Thi Nguyen introduces The Score, his examination of how ranking systems and numerical targets can both sharpen and warp our values, revealing how life becomes less playful when everything is reduced to points.Journalist and critic Keza MacDonald discusses Super Nintendo, her cultural history of the iconic console, tracing how its games, aesthetics and innovations transformed the medium and helped define what play means for generations of players. The Financial Times' commentator Stephen Bush examines the growing role of games and game like incentives in public life, exploring how the techniques of play — from reward structures to competitive framing — are reshaping political behaviour and communication.Producer: Katy Hickman

Dr. Konstantin Batygin, professor of Planetary Science at Caltech, made a joke that turned out to be true. In 2014, another Caltech professor, Mike Brown, brought an intriguing research paper to Batygin's attention. The paper described a peculiar planetary alignment in the outer solar system. While developing theoretical models to explain the paper's assertions, Brown and Batygin had a running gag, "We were like, okay, as a joke, let's put a planet in the outer solar system just to see what would happen." In this episode of Looking Up, Dean Regas chats with Dr. Batygin and gets the full story.

Fun and games? Not exactly. In this edition of Audio Pizza, Shaun, Garth, and Kayaker try to talk about what they do for fun and games… only to reveal they're not all that fun and don't actually play that many games. But what they lack in actual gameplay, they make up for with quick banter, questionable opinions, and spirited chats about entertainment, video games, blind sports, and the occasional board game.

It's summer—students are piling onto buses, heading to camps and conferences that could change their lives forever. But while they chase freedom and fun, there's a bigger battle happening behind the scenes. In this episode of Youth Worker On Fire, Doug Edwards reminds us that youth ministry isn't just fun games and late-night pizza—it's spiritual warfare. Drawing from Ephesians 6:12, Doug challenges youth pastors, leaders, volunteers, and parents to see the unseen: the spiritual fight for the hearts of our students. Doug shares his own story of finding Christ at 15 and encourages you to step boldly into the battlefield—not alone, but backed by the God of angel armies. Whether you're leading a cabin full of kids, praying for your teen, or just exhausted from the weight of it all—this episode will refuel your spirit and reframe your mission.
Read transcriptHULK SMASH… your expectations! This week on Play Comics, we're going green with rage as we dive into 2005's The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction – the game that asked the important question: “What if we gave players the power to literally punch a helicopter out of the sky and then use a bus as a baseball bat?” Developed by Radical Entertainment for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, this comic book adaptation threw subtlety out the window faster than Banner throws a tantrum. Forget stealth missions or carefully planned strategies – this game was all about embracing your inner gamma-powered toddler and turning entire city blocks into your personal sandbox of destruction. Joining us for this episode of controlled chaos is Matt Storm from the fantastic podcasts “Fun” and Games and Reignite! They'll help us explore how this title managed to capture the pure, unadulterated joy of being an unstoppable force of nature with anger management issues. Together, we'll discuss whether throwing cars at military helicopters counts as a valid combat strategy, and why sometimes the best solution to every problem is just… more smashing. So strap in, podcast listeners – we're about to go from zero to “HULK STRONGEST THERE IS!” faster than you can say “you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.” Warning: No buildings, vehicles, or military installations were harmed in the making of this episode… but we can't make the same promise about our gaming controllers. HULK PODCAST! Learn such things as: Does anyone want to play as Bruce Banner? Will anyone write a comic based on a game that's based on a comic? Is this game just a modern retelling of Rampage? And if so, is that a problem? And so much more!
