Today we chat with Bill Graber and Steve Rogers of the Energy Conservatory, also known as TEC, a 40-year-old company that is on a mission to unite the tools and test instruments used in the HVAC and Weatherization markets…an important quest I am also dedicated to.   We'll talk what innovation means at TEC.   The dictionary says innovation is the act or process of innovating. OK,   So what is innovating? “To make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.”   “To introduce something new, especially a product.”   Aha, that is it! It's the ACTION or ACTIVITY that is important.   We learn about the challenge of creating something that is “neat” (we engineers understand that you create something because you could, versus creating something that is “neat” AND useful.   This is a rare peek inside the doors of a manufacturer into their R&D labs and into the brains of an innovative company discovering the challenges and types of decisions that need to be made to satisfy their customers and advance the trades. When tire dealers tell you, “Keep doing what you're doing, I just need more tires,” that's a simple yet hard mandate to follow, especially in an environment where the supply chain is as predictable as the weather. Yet this is what Toyo Tires dealers told Michael Graber, president and CEO of Toyo Tire USA, when he was tapped to lead the company this past April.Staying in line with that directive, Graber and the Toyo team have laid out plans to get more tires to North American dealers while giving them more products they want in hot tire segments—all-weather and last-mile delivery (or super regional, as Graber calls it), are just two.“We're poised for growth,” Graber told us in the latest episode of What's Treading with Tire Review, presented by AAPEX.Graber has extensive tire industry experience, with eight years with Toyo under his belt serving most recently as vice president of sales and before that director of truck tire sales. He has also served in sales roles with Michelin and in the agricultural and waste industries. In this episode of What's Treading, Graber details key tire segments that are growth areas for Toyo and how the company's newest plant is slated to serve North American tire dealers.Subscribe to this podcast on:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-treading-with-tire-review/id1470309726Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1GA3lp6AFo7V7EEG5awHaEGoogle Podcasts: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Iv76bs6re7unom4p76myj3cakhmWatch it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rYE1NOtnlw&list=PLVkqUUE022sdAVQ6DuHU8cxd3FS2ni9vANot a fan of listening or watching the episode? In this poignant conversation about rising in love, Navy Graber describes her experience of building chosen family across perpetual long distance relationships as an international student transferring across majors and universities in search of an educational and communal place of belonging-and finally arriving at a place that feels like home, even if that place continues to evolve and change. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, May 24. Tuesday will begin a trend of rainier weather that will continue through Thursday. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 68 degrees. The chance for rain will pick up to around 40 percent after 4 p.m. Tuesday and spike up to 90 percent overnight into Wednesday. It will be breezy late Tuesday as rain creeps its way closer, and the low temperature should be around 53 degrees. A proposal by Gov. Kim Reynolds to shift taxpayer funding for public schools to scholarships for private school tuition assistance will not pass the Iowa Legislature this year, a top statehouse Republican said on Monday. Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, told reporters Monday that there were not enough votes among the 60 House Republicans to get the 51 votes needed to pass the proposal in the 100-member House. The legislative proposal had already passed the Republican-led Iowa Senate and Republican leaders had been holding up the session in hopes of reaching a compromise with House Republicans. The bulk of the holdouts among House Republicans were legislators in rural districts, where public school officials said the loss of students to private schools could be fiscally devastating. It is the second consecutive year that Reynolds, a Republican, made the proposal, only to see it falter in the Republican-controlled Iowa House. With Cedar Rapids casino backers on the cusp of applying again for a state license, the Iowa Legislature with scant notice Monday approved a moratorium on issuing any new approvals for casinos for two years. The moratorium, a new topic that came up in what appears to be the last days of the 2022 legislative session, is part of https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=HF2497 (House File 2497), a broader law on gaming and regulations. The bill was passed 35-11 in the Iowa Senate and later 60-23 in the Iowa House. The measure needs Gov. Kim Reynolds' approval to become law. If it becomes law, the hiatus would thwart Cedar Rapids' third try for a casino until July 2024. State regulators previously denied a gaming license to Linn County in 2014 and 2017. “It's incredibly disappointing that this can happen seemingly in the dark of night without the city to even have the opportunity to respond,” Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell said after the vote.  Lawmakers who supported the change argued that Iowa's gambling industry is at its saturation point and any other casinos would cannibalize the existing market. A judge has set a hearing in July on a motion to move the trial of one of two Fairfield teens accused of killing a high school Spanish teacher with a baseball bat out of Jefferson County because of pretrial publicity and to suppress several pieces of evidence and his statements to police at trial. A lawyer for https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-rules-2nd-fairfield-teen-to-be-tried-as-adult/ (Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, 16, )says her client can't get a fair and impartial jury in Jefferson County based on “extensive pretrial publicity.” In the suppression motion by Miller's lawyer, filed previously in March, the defense is asking the court to not allow the prosecution to submit evidence obtained during a search of Miller's residence on Nov. 4 of last year, and his statements to police because his rights were violated. In the motion, Miller's lawyer argues that Miller's mother signed a juvenile waiver when police asked to speak with her son about a missing person — Graber. Miller's mother was told about vandalism at Graber's home, not that it was regarding a homicide investigation or that Miller was a suspect. His lawyer argued that the subsequent police interrogation was thus tainted by the fact that Miller was not properly informed of his rights.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, May 12. It has felt like thunderstorm friendly weather for a few days now and late Thursday into Friday might be when they finally show up. But this will only be after we experience another sunny, hot, and humid day. The high for the Cedar Rapids area is predicted to be a balmy 91 degrees during the day with partly sunny skies. Storms could develop Thursday into Friday as cold air fights its way back into the mix. Friday will see an increased chance for storms, possibly severe ones.  A judge Wednesday rejected a request from the teen accused of murdering a high school teacher to have https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-denies-sending-murder-case-to-juvenile-court-for-a-fairfield-teen/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (his case transferred from adult court, where he faces harsher penalties if convicted). Judge Shawn Showers cited what authorities said was 17-year-old Jeremy Everett Goodale's active role in planning the murder last year of Fairfield High School Spanish language teacher https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-teens-charged-with-murder-argue-confidential-documents-shouldnt-be-made-public/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (Nohema Graber, 66, )along with “gathering the necessary supplies” to complete the “brutal” act and steps taken afterword to conceal the body and crime. Goodale and https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-teen-accused-of-killing-teacher-ripe-for-rehab-psychologist-testifies/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, 16, )are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony in the killing of Graber, who was their Spanish teacher. Her body was found in a park near the school Nov. 3.  Goodale was 16 at the time of the killing. The number of new COVID-19 cases in Iowa has nearly tripled in the past four weeks, and Linn and Johnson counties are once more considered to be “high transmission” counties by federal health authorities. https://www.thegazette.com/health-care-medicine/iowa-covid-19-case-counts-triple-over-three-week-period/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (The state on Wednesday reported 3,172 new coronavirus cases in the past seven days), compared to the 1,063 new cases reported in a seven-day period a month ago. The upturn is because of the highly contagious omicron subvariant, BA.2, which has become the dominant coronavirus strain in the Midwest and the rest of the country. A severe shortage in baby formula has https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/iowa-congressional-members-candidate-call-for-action-on-baby-formula-shortage/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (drawn the attention of members of Iowa's congressional delegation) and has become a campaign issue as well. Spot shortages in many groceries and pharmacies have been worsened by a FDA recall that stopped production at Abbot's largest U.S. formula manufacturing plant in Michigan. As supply disruptions and the massive safety recall have continued, several big box retailers have begun rationing sales of the formula. After hearing about the scarcity at his county meetings, Grassley https://www.grassley.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/grassley_to_fda_-_baby_formula_shortage.pdf (wrote) the FDA to ask what it is doing to address the shortage. He cited reports that at least 40 percent of baby formula supplies in the U.S. are completely depleted. Iowa was among six mostly...

On the latest episode of the CIAS Podcast I had the privilege of interviewing Nashville based artist, singer, and songwriter Grace Graber.I felt called to reach out to Grace after hearing about her mission to bring attention to mental health issues in the Church and the Christian music industry. After experiencing both physical and verbal bullying in her childhood, a song saved her during a defining moment in her life. After that experience she realized the power of music and has dedicated herself to sharing that with others. Grace has an important story to tell, about redemption and hope. Grace released her debut EP in 2021 which led to her building a team of A&R management, music producer, and recently signed with Wings Music Group for her upcoming sophomore EP. She has an edgy-pop vibe, with authentic and sincere lyrics. Grace is bold in her songs and sharing her story,  and I know this episode will encourage you on your journey.
