It's not intuitively obvious, but discarding DEI can result in even fewer medical professionals serving already underserved communities in rural Ohio. The Trump administration is doing its level best to eliminate DEI on the premise it fosters unlawful discrimination, but as Abraham Graber, Ph.D, points out, DEI promotes diversity and equity so as to achieve better outcomes, and that includes better outcomes in terms of getting more medical students interested in practicing medicine in rural Ohio. There's been a longstanding problem in rural Ohio suffering from inadequate healthcare. Some counties have just a handful of doctors. Some counties don't have a single doctor or hospital. What if you live in, say, Vinton County, and you need an oncologist? Well, like they say in the mob, “Fuggetaboutit.” You're pregnant and need prenatal care? Same thing.Who picks up the slack in these counties? EMT crews, but their services are only a stopgap. The absence of medical care for these communities means the people in these areas are not as healthy as those who live in metropolitan areas, and they have shorter life spans. To get more medical professionals in rural Ohio, we need a concerted recruiting program. And that means recruiting from the counties that are underserved, because the people who would want to practice in those counties will most likely come from those counties and not from the large metropolitan areas. And here's the challenge. If kids in those counties don't see doctors and don't see their friends becoming doctors, they'll never even think about becoming doctors. And for those few who might aspire to practice medicine, they likely don't have the same life experience or education as others and, thus, face barriers when tested and suffer from the negative stereotype many have about rural Americans. As Dr. Graber points out, if we want to start getting students in rural Ohio interested in and practicing medicine, we have to start thinking about how we find these young people. Focusing on test scores alone won't get us where we need to be. We need targeted recruiting, and that's DEI.
What if everything you've been told about menopause and metabolism has been fundamentally wrong? In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Sam Graber, we challenge the "linear path" narrative that has been sold to women for generations and explore how our metabolic health forms the foundation for navigating menopause with greater ease.Dr. Sam doesn't pull any punches as she explains why the medical system isn't designed to guide you toward optimal health—only to identify disease. "I don't recommend going to your doctor to learn about health," she candidly states, offering instead a framework for understanding how your body actually works. We dive deep into the metabolic underpinnings of women's health, exploring how insulin resistance, stress hormones, and nutritional choices directly impact your menopause experience. The conversation takes a powerful turn when we address how Gen X women (now all in perimenopause or menopause) were completely unprepared for this transition. We discuss how to bridge this knowledge gap for younger generations while providing practical guidance for women of all ages to understand their unique metabolic needs. Dr. Sam offers clear, actionable advice on nutrition priorities, starting with quality protein and health-supporting fats, while warning against the "pill for every ill" mentality that has dominated women's healthcare.Perhaps most empowering is Dr. Sam's call for personal sovereignty over your health journey: "No one's coming to save you—that's the good news and the bad news." Every food choice, every lifestyle decision either builds your health or moves you toward dysfunction. The choice, as Dr. Sam reminds us, is entirely yours—and you can step into the driver's seat at any moment, regardless of your past choices or current health status.Curious about taking control of your metabolic health during menopause? Listen now and discover why the most powerful lever you can pull is what—and when—you eat. Your body is talking. Are you ready to listen?Find Mia On Social Media here. Part 1 of a 2 Part Series: The silence around menopause has persisted for too long. Dr. Sam Graber, host of the Unraveling Together podcast, joins Mia to shatter misconceptions and empower women navigating this powerful life transition."To suffer is not to be female," Dr. Graber states emphatically, challenging generations of conditioning that has normalized women's discomfort. This eye-opening conversation reveals how the lack of research and open discussion about menopause has left countless women feeling confused, isolated, and pathologized for perfectly natural experiences. From brain fog to night sweats, these symptoms aren't mysterious curses—they're signals our bodies send when our complex hormonal systems respond to modern stressors. What makes this discussion truly revolutionary is its focus on reclaiming personal power. Rather than outsourcing health decisions or focusing on external fixes, Dr. Graber encourages women to develop intuition about their own bodies. She shares practical insights about monitoring blood sugar, managing stress, and creating personalized health plans that honor individual needs. The conversation weaves together metabolic health, societal conditioning, and the joy that comes from embracing this transformative phase rather than merely enduring it.Perhaps most powerful is the vision of community these women share. By breaking taboos and speaking openly about menopause, we create spaces for authentic connection and wisdom-sharing. As Dr. Graber explains, women's knowledge has historically been dismissed as "gossip," but these conversations are exactly what we need to heal collectively. Whether you're approaching perimenopause, deep in the transition, or simply want to understand the women in your life better, this episode offers invaluable perspective on honoring our cyclical nature in a world built for constant productivity.Ready to transform your relationship with your changing body? While I doubt any of us would purposefully cheer on ableist behavior in our daily work, what if I told you that you may be secretly promoting ableism every single day? This week we do some tough reflection on the medical model that most of us work within and how it may inherently dismiss the environmental factors at play in determining the impact of disabilities on individuals' lives. And while we're boosters of the neurodiversity movement, is it possible that their critiques might be going too far in regards to ABA? Hot buttons will get pressed in this episode! Maybe it's the lousy Smarch weather, but we're in a bit of a mood to start of this month. Not because our special guests aren't awesome. We had so much fun learning about qualitative analyses in exploring RBT burnout with Dr. Nicole Gravina and how to be more ethically responsible in creating meaningful goals for autistic adolescents and adults with Dr. Shanna Bahry. And not because we're not reviewing tough issues like turnover in human services, deconstructing ableist practices in the medical model, and respectfully disagreeing with the abolitionist neurodiversity critique. Now that I'm writing about all the awesome episodes coming out this month, I can't even remember why we sound so crabby. Oh, right…the state of the United States political system. And rude emails. On the first day of our Seventh Annual "12 Nightmares Before Christmas," we are heading just north of us to Fairfield, Iowa. On November 2, 2021, the community of Fairfield, Iowa, was devastated when beloved Spanish teacher Nohema Graber, 66, went missing. She hadn't been heard from since she set out for her daily walk in Chautauqua Park. Just one day later, on November 3, her badly beaten body was discovered—mere hours after she was reported missing. Authorities found her remains concealed beneath a tarp, a wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. The police confirmed that Graber had suffered significant trauma to the head. This cruel act shattered the peace of a close-knit community, leaving residents not only devastated but grappling with a haunting question: what could drive someone to commit such an unthinkable act of violence? The answer would emerge just days later, but the age of the perpetrators and the motive behind their actions would leave the community speechless.Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast to discuss “The Brutal Murder of Nohema Graber.”Special thank you to Abby Stout, who suggested this case to us. Song: Heaven Above, Earth Below Music by: Becky Graber Notes: Becky Graber let her unconscious speak during our conversation, and when I asked what she knows about herself right now, she said, "I am a breath of air on the earth" -- and then laughed a little in surprise and delight. The song she teaches also came from delighted awareness of the place of the body between heaven and earth -- plus a little tai-chi. Becky and I share a wonderfully rambly conversation about shedding old identities and making space, wanting to allow things to bloom rather than push them, and threshold times. We also take a lot of time with this three verse song, including playing with harmonies. You'll hear me making mistakes as I learn and play with harmonies -- but hopefully you won't notice it too much, because you'll be singing right along, too! The goal of this podcast is to encourage you to keep stepping into the power and beauty of your own voice, something Becky Graber has many years of experience at helping people do... Songwriter Info: Becky Graber has lived her life professionally centered around music and storytelling, teaching and performing, and a heart-drive towards healing and coming to centered generosity. Today we're examining the impact of bureaucracy and financialization on modern society through the lens of David Graeber's "Utopia of Rules," with reference to another of his works, "Bullshit Jobs." We explore how these forces shape political ideologies, wealth extraction, and everyday life. Starting with the alienation caused by bureaucratic systems, the discussion moves through the fusion of finance and bureaucracy, which influences both worker-corporate relationships and democratic processes. Then we look into the global justice movement's exposure of systemic violence and the role of technology in societal challenges as a potential model for criticism. We also address the perception of value shaped by financial abstractions, the issues within the retirement system, and the personal reassessment prompted by psychedelics. The podcast concludes with a discussion on the potential of worker ownership and the importance of societal renewal through new linguistic templates to combat institutional stagnation. Man, January went so long that we barely had time to stop to record our February preview. But whether in a car or on a boat, we've got behavior analytic discussions to fill 29 days. This month we're joined by guest, Dr. Noor Syed, to review her work on creating sustainable equitable practices in research and higher education. We also begin with the first part in what we hope will be an ongoing discussion about neurodiversity and review some recent articles on combatting workplace burnout, courtesy of our Patreon listeners. And, yes, Rob really recorded this episode from his (parked) car. Articles for February 2024 (LISTENER CHOICE) Preventing Burnout Novack, M.N. & Dixon, D.R. (2019). Fairfield, Iowa is home to just over 9,000 residents. It's a place that feels more like a small town than a city. There's a sense of community here, which was a main draw for Nohema Graber and her husband Paul when they decided to move to the Midwest and start a family. Nohema was born and raised in Mexico, and after settling down in Fairfield, she decided to make a career change in her fifties- eventually taking a position teaching Spanish at Fairfield High School. In 2020, Mrs. Graber was introduced to Willard Noble Chaiden Miller- a freshman student who'd just transferred from a local private school. But when Mrs. Graber was reported missing after failing to show up to work on November 3, 2021- investigators quickly learned that Willard Miller had a long lasting grudge toward his Spanish teacher, after Mrs. Graber gave him a bad grade… Written by Michael Dunphy Jr., Executive Produced by Michael Ojibway. Teen Willard Miller pleaded guilty to the murder of his Spanish teacher Nohema Graber and now a judge has sentenced him to life in prison. Iowa law does not permit juveniles to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, so Miller, 17, will serve a minimum of 35 years before he is eligible for parole. Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale were accused of killing 66-year-old Nohema Graber. The boys were students at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, where Graber had been teaching Spanish since 2012. Police found Graber's remains on November 3 at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield. A tipster led investigators to the teens. Police say social media evidence ties both suspects to Graber's death. According to a criminal complaint, in a social media exchange, the teens appeared to know specific details regarding Graber's death, including how the teacher died, and the motive. Information on a specific motive has not been publicly released. Investigators obtained search warrants for both suspects' homes and found clothing that appeared to have blood on them. A witness who knew the suspects told police the suspects were seen at the park on November 3. Prosecutors said Miller was upset about a grade and had been seen arguing with her about it.
