Meredith Scardino is the creator and showrunner of the Netflix TV series Girls5eva. Born and raised outside of Philadelphia, from a young age, Meredith was encouraged by her parents to pursue all types of art, and tried everything from cartooning classes (and watching Saturday Night Live) to painting classes in high school. She earned a bachelors degree in fine arts from Cornell before moving to New York City to pursue a masters in painting from the Parsons School of Design. There, her world opened up, as she took improv classes and writing electives at Parsons alongside her painting classwork. Scardino then landed a job creating animated comedy shorts, which combined her love for painting with her growing talent for comedy writing. Soon, she decided she wanted to pursue comedy writing full-time and quickly landed a writing gig at VH1's Best Week Ever. Stints at the Late Show With David Letterman and The Colbert Report followed before she jumped into narrative TV by working on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In 2021, she created her own show, Girls5eva, about a one-hit-wonder girl group that gets a chance at redemption decades after their initial fame. This year, she's nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Will Lee Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Head to head with the DNC, two news junkies didn't walk into a bar but did get lost in conversation and fun. It's easy when one of them is Grammy Winner, crazy talented, lovely, humble human, Will Lee. It's been a few years and a world of changes since last we spoke, this time focusing on the road to sobriety, many moons ago, what led there, the price of using, meeting Paul Schaffer, a relationship that changed his life, the two of them holding the distinction of being on Late Show With David Letterman from day one with The World's Most Dangerous Band, until the final days with the CBS Orchestra, also giving Will the world's record for the longest-running bassist on late-night television. Will talked about the original band of 4, Hiram Bullock, Steve Jordan, how and why it morphed, some standout moments… Warren Zevon's last show, Will's MacArthur Park with Jimmy Webb… his hero, Ringo, making an appearance… Beatlemania, period. Where it all started for Will, The Ed Sullivan Show, the Fab Four, all of whom Will would come to play with, even John in unique fashion. An incredible story about Paul, a Hofner, and a call from “P,” and how his Fab Faux came to be. Will's account of how he conquered Revolution #9 and playing The White Album, heretofore never heard by Beatles sound engineer and producer, Geoff Emerick. Crazily, I was there that night- the story has a bittersweet postscript. We talked about Will's new single, It's All Too Much, and his new video, Hey Shorty, and how that came to be, why he's off to Japan tomorrow and the fame he found there. I've known Will for decades… with each that passes, I adore him more. He's a rare success, who's gotten to play with just about everyone, all of his heroes, night, after night, year after year, for 33 of them, and everyone it seems, without exception, loves and respects him. It's a life well-lived filled with gratitude and appreciation, which makes it all the sweeter. He closed with The Beatles, I Will…how damn fitting, Will! That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Dave Attell is one of the best and most influential stand-up comedians of the past three decades. His uproarious nightclub shows, brilliant TV specials, guest appearances on talk shows, regular spots on "The Daily Show," and his groundbreaking and hilarious show "Insomniac with Dave Attell," have cemented his reputation as a comedy legend, especially in New York. However, his stint on "Saturday Night Live" was short-lived and rather unmemorable. Attell was hired as a writer and background performer after Lorne Michaels saw his very first network television appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman" (which you will hear in this episode). Despite his talent, SNL and Dave Attell never really meshed. In this episode, you'll hear the background stories of why SNL didn't work for Attell, how his stand-up was completely different from his work on the show, and you'll listen to sketches and jokes he wrote during his tenure. Sometimes, even the best comic minds don't fit into the world of "Saturday Night Live," and that's certainly the case here. [Ep80]

The Baltimore-based synth-pop band Future Islands was first thrust into the national spotlight in 2014 after making their TV debut on The Late Show With David Letterman. The band's unassuming frontman Samuel T. Herring danced ecstatically around the stage seething with emotion. The performance quickly went viral, making it one of Letterman's most memorable live appearances of all time. At the time of their big break, Future Islands had already released three albums and been touring relentlessly for nearly a decade. And while they would become one of the most prominent bands on the festival circuit for the next several years, Future Islands has always maintained a sense of unparalleled raw vulnerability on-stage—in part because of the deeply confessional nature of Sam's songwriting and electric stage presence. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Future Islands lead singer Samuel T. Herring about the band's latest album, People Who Aren't There Anymore. Samuel also describes the physical toll his energetic performance style has taken on his body over the years. And his long-held gripe with guitar-based music. Interview with Bill Million of The Feelies Formed in Haledon NJ in the 1970's, The Feelies have now released six albums including their critically acclaimed and influential debut Crazy Rhythms, which was voted 49 in the top 100 albums of the 1980s by Rolling Stone magazine and chosen by Spin Magazine as #49 of the best alternative records of all time. Their music has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and roll. Supporting the release of their first four albums the band appeared on the The Late Show With David Letterman and in concerts with The Patti Smith Group, R.E.M., and Bob Dylan as well as touring with Lou Reed. In 2008, the Feelies ended a 17-year sabbatical as a group to open for long-time admirers Sonic Youth at Battery Park and then resurrected their tradition of playing low key gigs at strategic intervals throughout the year rather than doing lengthy tours. In 2009, they were invited by R.E.M. to perform at Carnegie Hall in “The Music of REM” charity concert benefitting music education programs for underprivileged youth, then by the artist Dan Graham to play an acoustic set at the opening of his first American retrospective, held at the Whitney Museum: Dan Graham: Beyond at the Whitney Museum of American Art. That same year Bar/None re-issued Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, this being the first band-sanctioned CD release of the former. In 2011, they released a new studio album Here Before of which England's The Wire enthused, “Here Before picks up as though they'd never left. The second line- up is fully present, and the basics of their sound have filtered through so many younger bands (from Yo La Tengo to SF Seals to The Chills) that the music possesses a great kind of faux- familiarity. ‘Time Is Right' sounds something like The Terminals doing a Stooges tribute tune. It - and some of the Velvets riff - lifts that occur during the album's later moments- make me remember how nuts this group seemed 30-plus years ago.” In honor of their 40th Anniversary Bar/None Records re-released their third and fourth albums,Only Life and Time for a Witness in early 2015. Fashion designer Rachel Comey has always done things in a tightly focused way—and on her own terms. For more than two decades, she has followed an independent, wholly original approach to clothing design and retail that has resulted in her eponymous brand's staying power. From novelty underwear with pockets, to a hand-painted shirt that musician David Bowie once wore on the Late Show with David Letterman, to her trademark high-waisted, wide-legged Legion pants, Comey's designs stand out for their artful craft, distinctive aesthetic, and no-fuss sensibility. Beautiful as they are, they're also, in a sense, utilitarian: Comey spends her time imagining her wearers' needs as they go about their days and designs around that. There is something about the entire Rachel Comey universe that comes across as effortlessly cool.On this episode, Comey talks with Andrew about her 20-plus years in the fashion industry experimenting while staying true to herself, childhood memories that have helped shape her enduring designs, and her attention toward creating joy through clothing.Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Full transcriptRachel Comey[34:29] Fashion Week[47:39] Pioneer Works[49:14] High Maintenance[52:08] Legion Pant

It opened in theaters last weekend and will run on HBOMax through October. And: The Closer is Dave Chappelle’s sixth and final (for now, at least) feature-length standup special for Netflix. IT'S ABOUT TIME... THAT MONSTER PARTY DID ANOTHER EPISODE ABOUT TIME TRAVEL! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, once again break the barriers of the space/time continuum! How they do this, is with a provocatively paradoxical podcast episode called... TIME TRAVEL: TAKE 2!!! Why is this a "Take 2"? Well, when we did our first TIME TRAVEL episode with JAKE JOHANNSEN, LARRY STROTHE was unable to attend, and SHAWN SHERIDAN had to arrive late. Luckily, MATT WEINHOLD'S WIFE, CARRIE, was able to fill in! And,  although this episode was extremely entertaining, the episode didn't always entirely focus on time travel. Thus... TIME TRAVEL: TAKE 2! If you're going to attempt to create an alternate timeline episode about time travel, it helps to get the guest from the original timeline. So by traveling back in time, we managed to get celebrated comedian/writer/actor/friend of the show/time traveler... JAKE JOHANNSEN!!! ("JAKE THIS" PODCAST, THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON, LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIAN, COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS, JAKE JOHANNSEN: I LOVE YOU) We hope you enjoy this episode. New York-based comic Steve Marshall plays all the big clubs across the country. He's been featured on national television platforms such as CBS News and CNBC, plus Hot Off the Grill With Bobby Flay and NBC's Dare to Dream. Riffing relentlessly on topics such as his negative Jewish family and why one should never make fun of Chinese people who work in a Chinese restaurant, Marshall's no-holds-barred approach will have you laughing and gasping in equal doses."THE MARSHALL PLAN - Bad behavior makes for good comedy."That's the way the Florida New Times described Steve's comedy."Marshall's style relies on a sharp mind and a complete inability to properly behave himself. Nothing too controversial, just a little good-old-fashioned honesty."RATED H FOR HONESTY.Steve doesn't behave, he tells the truth. After graduating with a degree in accounting Steve turned down a job with Price Waterhouse to follow his dream and become a comedian. By day he taught accounting, business law , math and psychology at a vocational business school. He told jokes and made accounting fun. His misbehaving got him promoted to Dean.By night he went to open mics and learned to make people laugh. One day he was picking up his dry cleaning and teasing the woman behind the counter, she smiled and said "behave" and Steve found his comedy voice.Steve takes the stage announcing proudly "I'm not here to behave" and proceeds to speak honestly about sex, ethnicity, love, and the lack of respect for women, gays, minorities and even men. That's right, men get disrespected too!The results have been amazing.Steve has appeared on network and cable tv. NBC,CBS, the Food Network have all featured Steve being funny.Steve has been seen cooking and cracking jokes with Bobby flay on Hot Off the Grill and stealing the date on Blind Date. That's right. We told you Steve doesn't behave for laughs. His high energy and broad smile made him a perfect choice to warm up tv audiences for ABC's The View.A strong writer Steve has written monologue jokes for the Late Show With David Letterman and is the head writer for a new dvd coming out called Extreme Comedy.Steve is a recognized film director. He wrote and directed Academy Award Consideree and Long Island Film Festival Winner "Get the Script to Woody Allen". Steve is currently directing "Driving Me Crazy" starring academy award winner Mickey Rooney, and Renee Taylor , Josepy Bologna, and Dick Cavett.Steve is one of the top comedy and acting coaches in America. He has coached Lisa Lampanelli, Lisa Landry, Karith Foster, John Diresta and Tommy Savitt.Recently Steve performed his totally clean comedy act at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City and the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. He got a standing ovation at the Funnybone in West Virginia performing his Double R rated act .Steve also performs a one man show in theaters called "Nobody Told Me". Time Out NY reviewed Steve's show and called it "genuinely funny."Genuine, passionate, honest! This high energy comedian, actor, writer, director, will make you laugh about real life with the fun of a party where no one behaves. hence Don't Behave is my philosophy for finding one's true self. Steve discovered if I broke patterns and paradigms I behaved more naturally.Simply walking to a familiar place in a different route opened my subconscious to spontaneity. The next step or evolvement is transcending.Knowledge becomes the diving board to bounce on and inspire one to dive.On stage I am diving into the unknown, using different approaches as a diving board to propel me.The same in my personal life. The personal becomes the diving board for my stage performance and the stage performance becomes the diving board for my personal life. Therefore on or off the stage I Am Me.

I’m not sure how manytimes I’ve given up or almost given up but it’s got to be way more then the times I’ve gone for it. Especially, when life has thrown me a curve ball or fifty. I went to grad school to be a poet and gave up to make money. I wanted to work creating animation features but it was easier to sell out and get an office job. Then there are the people who stick with it, the people who have even more grit and likely a bigger chip on their shoulder—but the sad news is that road is littered with them, too. Folks who sacrifice everything and still don’t make it. Then there’s those who do. Who, against all odds, somehow catch a break and find an irregular path to success. I have a wildly candid conversation about that with this week’s guest, In the Valley Below. Jeff and Angela share deeply personal stories they’ve never shared in any interview before for fear their big label or even fans wouldn’t understand. After a trip to SXSW in Austin, Texas, they fell in love, Angela left her girlfriend and they decided they needed to write music together. The band started as a studio project, and as you’ll hear, nearly walked away from music. Then, after a crazy turn of events, they made their television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman and have since appeared on Conan and tons of music festivals. LA Weekly listed their debut album among the 10 Best Albums of 2014 and The Huffington Post named “Peaches,” the song you just heard, the #5 song of that same year. Sometimes listening to other people’s rollercoaster can inspire us just how important it is to hold on. Even when the world tells you to let go.

Face2Face with David Peck

Mac King   Mac and I talk about comedy and magic, show business and working in Las Vegas and why he’s a good listener and how that makes him a better performer and why nice guys don't always finish last.   Biography   Acclaimed by MAGIC Magazine as the premiere comedy magician in the world today, magician and comedian Mac King was just named “Magician of the Year” by the Magic Castle in Hollywood, just broke a Guinness World Record, has appeared on seven TV specials for NBC-TV, just got voted the 6th best show in all of Las Vegas, just rocked on The Late Show With David Letterman, and his book from Random House just entered it’s ninth printing. How did a kid from Louisville, Kentucky find himself in the enviable position of being perhaps the funniest magician in America?   Mac became interested in magic as a kid because both of his grandfathers (Elwood Huffman and Pax King) were keen amateur magicians. Elwood would perform a trick for Mac, and when asked how he did it, Elwood would point to his shelf of magic books and say, “It’s in one of those.” Mac would then have to sort through all the books looking for how to do that particular trick. A few years later it finally occurred to Mac that this was merely Elwood’s little scam to get Mac to read more books! As a kid Mac would do a show for his family and friends just about any time he could, but his first paid show was for one of the Herbert kid’s birthday party when Mac was 10. He got a whopping five bucks cash (plus cake). The first show he was paid by check was for his Grandfather Elwood’s Kiwanis Club in Greenville, Kentucky. Mac got 35 dollars for that show (but no cake). After moving to Los Angeles in 1987 Mac’s amazing visual style of magic, and offbeat (but decidedly friendly) approach to comedy eventually caught the eye of the producers of all the stand-up comedy TV shows like An Evening at the IMPROV andComic Strip Live that were so popular in the late 80’s. In the last few years, magic shows on television have become more popular than ever, and Mac has been there from the beginning. That beginning was, of course, with David Copperfield. Mac had developed a magic trick that just wasn’t right for his own show, but David thought enough of it to pay Mac for it and put in his live show and then on his television special later that year. The next year, the same thing happened with Penn and Teller. Mac was beginning to make a name for himself as a creative force in the magic world. All that attention garnered Mac a showcase for the producers of NBC-TV’s The Worlds Greatest Magic shows. His unique hilarious tricks, including his ability to make his head cave in, landed him a spot on the first of these highly rated annual specials. After seeing him on that show, all of the people involved just had to have him in their next big NBC magic show,Houdini: Unlocking His Secrets where Mac performed his absurdly comical rendition of Houdini’s Thumb Tie Trick. The segments Mac devised the following year for The World’s Greatest Magic II were so popular that The Mac King School of Magic became a regular fixture on all of The World’s Greatest Magic shows. Mac is the only performer to appear on all five of these exceptionally well-received shows. His success on those programs landed him a spot on another NBC special, The World’s Wildest Magic. Which, in turn, lead to him being featured on Penn and Teller’s Sin City Spectacular. At the end of 1999 Mac made his first appearance on the new syndicated Donny and Marie Show, where he performed his Amazing Goldfish Trick. Using a small piece of a Fig Newton as bait, Mac caught live goldfish on a fishing line cast out over the heads of the audience. His October appearance was so successful that it made their year-end highlight show of The Best of 1999. Mac made 4 appearances on their show before it was cancelled (not Mac’s fault). And a couple of months ago his house was featured on Home and Garden Television. Barnes and Noble continues to offer Mac King’s Lunchbox-O-Magic, Mac King’s Book-O-Magic and Mac King's Magic In A Minute Suitcase-O-Magic, boxed kits at retail outlets everywhere and online. Mac’s hilarious how-to book, Tricks With Your Head just entered it’s 9th printing with Random House. Just released is a book of magic to do around the campfire, Campfire Magic, produced by specialty book publisher Black Dog and Leventhal. With all this stuff out there, Mac has probably started more beginners on the road to magic as a hobby than anyone else, ever. DEBBIE GRABER READS FROM HER COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES KEVIN KRAMER STARTS ON MONDAY WITH MATT FLANAGAN

Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday (Unnamed Press) Debbie Graber’s debut short story collection, Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is a trenchant and searing satirical look at office life that is as astute and hilarious as Joshua Ferris’s And Then We Came to the End. These thirteen stories skewer corporate culture, as told through souls adrift in a khaki-clad purgatory. And Graber knows from what she writes – she has held a number of jobs in corporate America, which informed her gimlet-eyed writing. One of the aspects of the workplace that most interested her are the personas are forced to adopt. “It’s like they exist in a far flung area of the time space continuum where reason seems to always be taking a vacation day,” says Graber, “If we’re spending all these hours in make-believe land, what does that say about the work we are doing? What does it say about us?   In Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday, our hero Kevin Kramer is the new Senior Vice President of the Products Profit center at Production Solutions. He has worked hard for all his success, perfected the non-clammy handshake, and speaks “corporate” like a second language. But our Kevin Kramer harbors many dark secrets. As do many of the characters in Graber’s stories: An HR manager trying desperately to maintain order, even as the entire software department vanishes under mysterious circumstances. An estranged (and possibly deranged) sister devises her reunion by throwing together a DIY wedding shower. A man who wears a Chewbacca costume feels he is uniquely qualified to divide the world into winners and losers. And a call center representative tries to give himself a pep talk after a particularly egregious client interaction. With a wit and voice all its own, with Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday, Debbie Graber announces herself as a literary talent to watch. Praise for Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday “The stories in Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday are funny and funny-sad, formally bold, and a total delight to read. Graber captures perfectly the absurdities of contemporary, corporate America and her fabulous debut reminds us that we are all searching for meaning and human connection, whether it be from friends, family, or reply-all emails.”-Edan Lepucki, author of California “Debbie Graber's stories are crisp, sardonic, and funny—as antic and acerbic as they are intelligent and alert. A sly and incisive observer of human nature, Debbie Graber will win you over with this delightful debut.”-Sara Levine, author of Treasure Island!!! "Evil, evil, evil stories-- If you know the devil, you should buy him this for Christmas."-Ben Loory, author of Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day “Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday offers satirical fiction that causes you to howl with laughter at the same moment its sharply exposed horrors cut into you. Debbie Graber's stories capture the absurdities of the 21st century corporate workplace in which white-collar millenials find their inboxes always brimming with new incentives for betrayal and self-betrayal. Neither the powerless nor the powerful outrun their demons in these brilliantly funny and bruising tales of American "enterprise."-Kevin McIlvoy, author ofThe Fifth Station “Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday skewers that place where so many of us spend our days and about which we spend the other hours of our lives complaining: the modern workplace. In this bitingly funny, precisely crafted collection, Debbie Graber takes on office excess: happy hours, overtime, trysts, and petty grievances. In doing so, she questions our societal notions of success and failure and invites us to laugh at our bosses and coworkers and, perhaps most of all, ourselves—knowing that if we don’t laugh, we just might cry. Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is satire at its most incisive.”-Lori Ostlund, author of After the Parade "With laugh-out-loud humor and a wildly keen eye for detail, Graber doesn't just brilliantly satirize our heavily corporate and medicated world, she wonderfully eviscerates it."-J. Ryan Stradal, author of Kitchens of the Great Midwest Debbie Graber has performed at Second City, worked in an office, and received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from U.C. Riverside at Palm Desert.  Her stories have appeared in The Nervous Breakdown, Harpers, Zyzzyva, Hobart, and elsewhere. Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is her first collection of stories. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband. Matt Flanagan began his career as a writer for The Late Show With David Letterman, wrote movies you haven't seen, and several shows that were canceled after 13 episodes. He currently writes for Disney Channel's Stuck In The Middle and co-hosts a storytelling podcast called Tell It Anyway with his wife Jennie Josephson.
