Who says you can't get stronger as you get older? Today, Strength and RunForm Coach Matt Pendola is back and this time he's accompanied by one of his clients, Michael 'Stoke' Stoker, one member of a small group who Matt affectionately refers to as 'The Silverbacks'. 73 year old Stoke joins us to speak about how his 20 years of work with Matt has enabled him to continue powder skiing well into his 70's, and build his strength up to the point where he can now do 7 full pull ups using the gymnastic rings (having been unable to do just 1 when he was 60). Matt walks us through his approach to working with older athletes, and some of the very specific exercises he includes as well as others which he avoids. If you're looking for inspiration both in your strength training and from a 73 years young ‘silverback' athlete, please pay attention as we also discuss: Building grip and core strength to improve pull up strength Why plyometrics and mobility work are hugely important for older athletes Older athletes need better force production Let your body tell you how much recovery it needs The benefits of kettlebell training for female athletes Fitness aging and longevity: It's all about lifestyle choices You can follow Matt on: Instagram: @PendolaProject Facebook: PendolaProject Website: https://www.pendolaproject.com and check out his programs including a free movement improvement assessment and protocol Some special offers from Matt for podcast listeners: Use this code —>>> MATT10. As you know, I'm a huge advocate of the benefits of strength training for triathletes, which is why I love chatting with strength coaches on this podcast. Matt Pendola works closely with our recent guest Bobby McGee on their run technique programme, RunForm. As a strength coach, Matt also has his own programme called the Pendola Project which is focussed on serving elite and professional athletes in a wide range of sports to help them build effective strength for their performance. He has worked with 2 Olympic Gold, a Sliver and a Bronze Medalists, and is currently coaching Ben Kanute. I'd never chatted with Matt before but as he says “we could be brothers from another mother”. We had so much in common that it was difficult not to get side tracked about other topics. I learned a lot from Matt and I hope you're able to find some useful nuggets of information here as well: Connecting the dots - mobility then stability then strength (29:00) Building core strength to hold your posture longer (29:30) Getting the basics right + more consistency (1:05:00) The importance of a performance mindset (1:09:00) The 4 pillars of RunForm (1:15:00) Benefits of using resistance bands for your strength training (1:16:00) Finding time to fit in regular strength work without compromising your triathlon training (1:25:00) The importance of dynamic trunk control (1:30:00) You can follow Matt on: Instagram: @PendolaProject Facebook: PendolaProject Website: https://www.pendolaproject.com and check out his programs including a free movement improvement assessment and protocol Some special offers from Matt for podcast listeners Use this code —>>> MATT10. That was just kind of what you did, you had to be in shape for the job. One day, a tree fell on him fracturing his back. After that he was forced to slow down and learn how to train smart so he could get back to running again. This injury led to Matt's guiding principle: FIT, which stands for Focused Intentional Training. It really is about helping people gain function through training. Matt started Pendola Training in 2001. I was able to gain strength without doing a bunch of heavy lifting. – Gwen Jorgensen, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist 14:27 - Around 2011, Matt was coaching high school cross country, and saw that he could use what he had learned about strength training to prevent injuries in endurance athletes. Matt met Bobby McGee in 2015 and his approach to training has evolved incredibly since then. "When I started working closer with elite athletes I was forced to take my learning to the next level. At a certain point I realized with a brick and mortar business I could at most affect 40 people at a time. I built R3 so that I could make everything I've learned over the last 20 years available to any runner at any level." Each and every movement you'll do is designed specifically to help you run stronger. 23:34 - So what is RunFORM - and how can it help you to run faster with less injury? Based on four pillars developed by the #1 running coach in the world, Bobby McGee, and Matt Pendola - Form Drills, Dynamic Mobility Drills, Loaded Mobility, and Banded Dynamics. This easy to follow progression builds week by week adding the perfect mix of adding new movements to your schedule combined with movements you mastered the week before. The time commitment is low, the benefits are high, and the better running you'll achieve will last a lifetime. 33:47 - Matt describes some his biggest highs over his career working with all kinds of athletes. 38:32 - We all have tough times. Matt explains one of his lowest career moments. Keep showing up ... and doing it with intent 42:09 - Strength training can be a bit of an after-thought. Matt explains why strength training is important for the elite/endurance athlete, and how they can best fit it into their busy schedule. 49:38 - Matt lays it all out ... Do your quality run first, recover within about 8 hours, then strength train later that same day. 52:54 - Matt has his LMT licence and explains why and how he utilises massage within his coaching of athletes. Coming from an athletic upbringing playing college baseball, Chad Belding got serious about hunting after the sudden death of his father in 2006. After teaming up with trainer Matt Pendola, Belding learned to approach hunting with the same mentality as any elite sport. Using chaos training, systemic breathing exercises, visualization techniques, and the tenacity of a dedicated athlete, Belding mastered the skills needed to excel on the hunt and avoid the kind of injuries and physical setbacks that can end a hunting career. A student of discipline and a proponent of natural conservation, living off the land, and not being afraid of a little elbow grease, Belding now dedicates his life to showing other guys and girls that you can feel better and have more strength, flexibility, and longevity doing something that you love. Chad and Matt sit down to continue their on-going discussion of different approaches and ideologies when it comes to training, not just your body, but your mind as well. Transparency has been key thus far and that theme continues as the guys dig into areas that people often only talk to themselves about. We were thinking this would be a three part series but as we neared the end of part 3, it became apparent that these topics would need more of our time. So then....maybe a part 4 is around the corner! This episode is brought to you by Gerber Knives and MTN OPS!

To help us think more clearly about our mental skillset, I'd like to introduce you to Matt Pendola. Matt Pendola is a polymath and exactly the type of person I love bringing on the podcast. His diverse background includes success in not just coaching, but his education and his athletic career. Athletically, he's posted quite a few major accomplishments: He Won the Elite Spartan World Championships Masters Division (2015) Age group runner up Duathlon Nationals (2015) Qualified for Duathlon World Championships 3x 4th Overall at the Northface Trail Championships and 3rd in his division (2014) He’s also a Road Runner Club of America certified running coach, massage therapist, creator of Pendola Training, and has a host of continuing education certifications in strength training, performance, and even Jack Daniels' coaching program. In this interview, Matt and I are discussing the mental factors that contribute to our success in running. Because after you get your training right, the next big avenue for improvement is mastering your mindset and improving your confidence, drive to train, willingness to suffer, and finding the intrinsic motivation to always run consistently. BTW, I haven't explored this topic on Strength Running at length. We have programs for injury prevention, strength training, dialing in your nutrition and fueling, coaching, and for beginner runners. But not for fine-tuning our mental fitness. So if you have any questions, or suggestions, or ideas that you’d love for me to cover, find me on Instagram and send me a message (my direct messages are always open and I want to hear from you).
