Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Companies Worth Applying To: We have two companies worth applying to right now that are worth taking a serious look. First is ViewFi, the telemedicine company out of Atlanta led by CEO, Michael Williamson. ViewFi connects you with the world's top medical experts to get your pain or injury diagnosed, without the wait. They are hiring for a Sports Medicine Physician. The process for ViewFi helps you connect, diagnose, plan, and recover all through a simple application alongside a trusted and premier medical professional. Next up, this past week, A.T. Gimbel and team hosted another fantastic Atlanta Healthcare Meetup with Ryan Jones, the CEO of Florence Healthcare. Florence frees clinical trials from bottlenecks, so they can accelerate and scale. Sites are drowning under the demands of today's clinical research trials, slowing clinical trials, increasing costs, and delaying cures. Florence's Site Enablement Platform helps sites streamline operations, enable remote monitoring, and integrate study workflows. They are hiring for several roles including a Senior Sales Executive, Salesforce Admin, and several others. We put the link in the show notes and if you didn't watch the live interview with Ryan, I highly recommend listening to our events page. Podcast of the Week: I have not listened to the entire episode because it is 3 and half hours in length and my bike ride is a crisp 30 minutes, but I'm well into it and it comes highly recommended from a trusted source. This podcast comes from the show Acquired and it is the full history of LVMH, and how Bernard Arnault turned a $15m investment in a bankrupt French textile company into the world's largest individual fortune. This story is equal parts Berkshire Hathaway, Barbarians at the Gate, Steve Jobs / Ted Turner etc and worth any entrepreneur's time. We put the link in the show notes. Quiet Giant: One of the Top 10 Most Innovative companies that piqued my interest last week from the TAG Summit was DataSeers. They have over 80 employees. This is an enterprise solution for fintech and banking operations that helps with onboarding, ACH processing, anti-fraud, compliance, reconciliation, and Analytics. FinanSeer® converts raw transaction data to meaningful information that financial institutions can use to optimize their processes and protect their customers. It cleans data and automates workflows to increase operational efficiency across several aspects of the business. . Feature Release of the Week: Major major release and put I “release” in air quotes as this is a release of physical space, but Intown Golf Club in Charlotte opened their doors this week to the initial Founding 100 members and it was a spectacular event. If you are in Charlotte and love to play golf, socialize, and like good food and spirits, Intown Golf Club is the place for you. The outdoor patio, putting green, and firepit is just the beginning before you head indoors to 8 simulators, private dining, a massive bar and much more. Shout out to the team on creating another special location. Raise a Glass: You know was I putting together this week's Five and Thrive and was a little surprised there had not been a funding announcement this week of any sort, and then all of sudden, right before I hit send on this bad boy, I see an update that Jason Rubbotom's Clovery just raised a very impressive $19M let by GroTech Ventures. Cloverly built the first API in the world for carbon credits and the company has grown to become the leading digital infrastructure powering the voluntary carbon market. Their software is helping any company scale their impact by providing the infrastructure to supply or buy carbon credits with the click of a few buttons. Congratulations to Cloverly and team on the next phase of growt! Annnnnd that's five minutes! What's something that you wish someone had told you before having children? From challenges with breast feeding, to lack of sleep, to postpartum body insecurities, there are probably so many things that you felt unprepared for after giving birth. What's normal? What's not normal? It's hard to know, especially when you have nothing to compare it to. We hear from doctors that everything looks good, and to just give it time, but that's not enough. There is such a lack of support for moms in the United States, and our system is broken. We're set up to struggle and it doesn't have to be this way. Today I have Dr. Lara Morgan Lee on the podcast, and we're talking all about these issues. Lara Morgan Lee, MD is a board-certified Sports Medicine Physician and former professional team doctor who after her own pregnancy and postpartum journey realized traditional medical care was simply put, failing mothers. Leveraging her career experience with athletes she turned her focus to providing the education and empowerment one needs from expecting to years after baby. On today's episode, I'm talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Veronica Jow about overcoming the fear of failure.Veronica is the founder of Avid Sports Medicine, a multi-disciplinary sports medicine clinic in the Bay Area. She's working together with her team at Avid to help patients live healthier and more active lives. Before opening her own practice, Veronica worked as an employed physician and as the medical director for a medical tech start-up. Veronica's taken the lessons she's learned from the business and tech worlds to pivot quickly when something's not working instead of going further in the wrong direction. We talk about:How commonly people switch directions in careers outside of medicine and how this is celebrated rather than discouraged. When Veronica took a job as a medical director for a start-up, she viewed it as a “residency for business” and knew that she would learn, regardless of the outcome of the start-up.Veronica is not letting the fear of failure prevent her from expanding the model of her current practice to a wider audience. Did you know that out of all the strength and conditioning research that shapes most of the plans and decisions we make as coaches, practitioners and as consumers- that less than 6% of the research is exclusively on women? Women are physiologically, behaviorally and psychologically completely different from men. Our needs must be attended to separately than men. Even though we are seeing more females in sports and in the gym, we are still underrepresented in sports medicine which puts us at risk for injuries and not performing to our maximum potential.Change begins with the help of people like Amy West, MD, EdM - who we interviewed in today's episode. Dr. Amy West is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Physician who dedicates her career and personal life to celebrating and advocating for the strength of women. She is currently the team doctor for Hofstra University NCAA Division one and the Crossfit games. Yes you heard me right- she is a doctor who recommends Crossfit. You'll learn all about why Amy recommends Crossfit for injury prevention in this episode. You'll also learn about the research and work Amy has done involving female athletes, the effects hormones have on musculoskeletal tissue, adaptive sports, functional movement and injury prevention. 1:47 Amy is really cool- Amy's story4:40 What is a sports medicine physiatrist?5:50 A doctor…who loves CrossFit for… injury prevention9:20 Do you use this ESSENTIAL tool for behavior change? 11:16 The Adaptive Training Academy13:42 Less than 6% of current S&C research is on exclusively women15:17 Researching how a woman's menstrual cycle & hormone fluctuations affect...17:20 Stress fractures are more common in women- why??19:49 Advice on how to talk to your female clients when you think there is a problem24:22 Specific advice for men & normalizing talking about periods 25:56 Big problem: Many providers aren't attuned to what athletic women need27:56 What is a stress fracture?28:52 Last points on injury and activity 30:43 Why is not moving often- bad?Find Amy on Instagram: @amywestmd Twitter: @AmyWestMDListen to Amy's podcast: @docsinthebox Learn about physical therapy services at Reload hereLearn about fitness services at Reload hereIG: @reload.ptDiggin' the intro/outro jam? With a father who was a cardiologist he witnessed the sacrifices, joys and impact of being a physician. He knew before the start of medical school, sports medicine was for him. He was a kinesthetic, hands-on learner. When deciding where to go to medical school he discovered osteopathic medicine and quickly identified with the philosophy. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine quickly became his favorite class and he took advantage of every opportunity to treat his family and friends. Today he is a sports medicine fellowship director, a USA Track and Field doctor and team physician at a division 1 school. He cannot imagine his practice without OMT. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/benjamin--greene/message
When I started in sports 20 years ago, I never saw female team physicians at the Major League level. If they existed, they kept them hidden behind closed doors. It's part of the reason why I get over the top very excited when I see women team physicians at the Major League level. So you can imagine my joy when I got the opportunity to interview Dr. Julie Bruene. She's a sports medicine physician at RUSH and a team physician for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, Depaul University, and Trinity International University. In this episode of the Game of Her Own podcast, we dive into a lot of mindset challenges that we all face. Dr. B is candid and shares her own experiences and actionable advice. Listen in as we talk about: What she learned about herself and imposter syndrome The untrue story she made up about how her colleagues viewed her When she recognized she was self-sabotaging Why people pleasing can be detrimental to your career How to avoid ruminating on mistakes you make And my favorite….Why you need to surround yourself with people who will call you on your bullshit Connect with Jahaan: Learn more about working with Jahaan and see if it's the right fit for you: https://JahaanBlakeAppointmentScheduling.as.me/LetsTalk Join Jahaan's VIP Email List: https://bit.ly/3yccwAP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jahaanblake/ Email: jblake@jahaanblake.com Website: https://jahaanblake.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jahaanblake/ Links: Make an appointment with Julie: https://www.rushortho.com/doctors/julia-bruene Your Doctor Friends Podcast: https://www.yourdoctorfriendspodcast.com/ Connect with Julie: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliabruenemd/ Dr. Julia Bruene is a sports medicine physician with special interests in acute and chronic orthopedic injuries, concussion management, care of female athletes, care of combat athletes/mixed martial arts, and special needs athletes.
