Most contractors stay stuck swinging a hammer for 90 hours a week because they never make the jump from operator to owner. Trant, a third-generation carpenter based in Nottingham, New Hampshire, almost did. Then his wife told him they were having a kid, and everything changed. In this episode of the Builders of Authority Podcast, host Adam McChesney sits down with Trant to break down exactly how he went from solo contractor to building a custom deck and outdoor living company on track to hit $20M in annual revenue, and why niching down to decks (instead of being a master of all trades) was the single biggest unlock. What we cover:– Why niching down to decks streamlined his estimating, SOPs, and office operations– The mindset shift from contractor to business owner — and the audiobooks and mentors that drove it– How becoming a dad forced him to build a company that could run without him on every job site– The marketing stack that built the brand: vehicle wraps, Google Ads, Google Business Profile, and targeted neighborhood mailers– Why hiring a virtual assistant was one of the highest-ROI moves he made– His 5-year plan: $20M in revenue and a dedicated outdoor living design center– How to delegate the tasks outside your expertise so you can focus on growth
Quitting a stable paycheck to build something of your own is the hardest decision most future business owners ever make. In this episode of the Builders of Authority Podcast, host Adam McChesney sits down with Michael Schieffer, a former commercial loan officer who spent 10 years inside the banking world before walking away in April 2023 to build three businesses of his own.Today Michael runs a real estate flipping operation (16+ flips and counting), an Exit Factor franchise that helps business owners increase valuation and step out of the operator seat, and a Two Maids cleaning franchise in St. Charles that he runs as an owner, not an operator. That distinction is the entire point of this conversation. What we cover:– Why "golden handcuffs" keep so many high earners stuck in jobs they've outgrown– What 10 years of writing commercial loans taught Michael about why businesses fail– The owner vs. operator framework — and how to structure a business so it doesn't depend on you– How Michael completed 16+ real estate flips while still holding down a W2– Why "time freedom" became the real driver behind leaving banking– The 80/20 content rule for building authority without becoming a full-time creator– How to position your business for a higher exit valuation 5+ years before you sellIf you've been sitting at a desk wondering if it's time to make the jump, or you're already running a business and trying to step out of the day-to-day, this episode lays out the mindset and the mechanics.
Authority and influence are built through connection and intentionality. Too often, experts get trapped on a pedestal, separated from the very audience they want to impact. In this episode of the Connected Leadership Bytes, we feature Andy Lopata's guest interview on the Authority Podcast with Ross Romano. Andy is a specialist speaker on professional relationships and co-author with Dr Ruth Gotian, of the Financial Times Guide to Mentoring. Mentoring in its various forms and benefits for both mentors and mentees is discussed. Andy explains that mentoring isn't just a hierarchical senior-junior relationship; it can be reverse mentoring (junior mentoring senior), peer-to-peer and formal/informal approaches. He emphasises the importance of having a "mentoring team," drawing support from various individuals. Andy and Ross agree that the qualifications for being a mentor are experience and expertise rather than formal qualifications. Andy explains the distinctions between mentoring, coaching, role models, and sponsors. The podcast also discusses what mentors should expect from mentees (commitment, accountability, openness to challenge) and vice versa. Andy also advocates for an abundance mentality in mentoring, both at an individual and organisational level, arguing that investment in mentorship yields significant returns in terms of staff retention, upskilling, and creating a positive work environment. Key Takeaways: Diverse Mentoring Models: Andy shared that mentoring extends beyond the traditional hierarchical model to include reverse mentoring, peer-to-peer mentoring, and informal mentoring teams, catering to diverse needs and situations. Clarity of Objectives: He emphasised the crucial role of clearly defined goals and objectives for both mentor and mentee to ensure the relationship's effectiveness and to prevent it from stalling. Honest and Supportive Guidance: The balance between honest feedback and supportive encouragement is critical. Mentors should challenge mentees while providing the support needed to succeed. Accountability and Commitment: A successful mentoring relationship requires both parties' commitment and willingness to be held accountable for agreed-upon actions and goals. Organisational Mentorship Programmes: To be successful these programmes require strategic planning, senior management buy-in, and peer-level support to ensure effectiveness and prevent resentment within teams. Many of my colleagues working in the public sector are skeptical of companies selling products to school districts. I've felt some of this skepticism myself as I've seen certain approaches gain traction because they're well-marketed (yet not evidence-based). So it's understandable to me that people would question the motives of companies selling products; especially in the for-profit space. The elephant in the room, of course, is that Dr. Karen, LLC is a for-profit EdTech company. I've also spent a fair amount of time interacting with people who either work for larger EdTech or curriculum companies, or who have started one themselves. Most of them are therapists, administrators, or teachers who felt inspired to create something who are trying to make a living doing something that matters. This would describe many of the hosts on the Be Podcast Network, which is why I wanted to invite one of the network co-founders, Ross Romano, to De Facto Leaders to talk about his experiences coaching EdTech and education-related start-up founders. Ross Romano has worked with over 100 companies and nonprofit organizations in the education space and collaborated with countless schools, districts, and educators. Ross is founder and CEO of September Strategies, an award-winning consulting firm helping leaders and organizations connect vision to decision through coaching, strategic advisement, and marketing consulting. Ross is also co-founder of the BE Podcast Network, a media company producing 40+ series reaching more than 50,000 educators and parents every month. He is also Strategic Advisor for the American Consortium for Equity in Education and the Founding Program Chair of the Consortium's Excellence in Equity Awards.Prior to starting September Strategies, Ross was Managing Director of MindRocket Media Group, a K-12 marketing firm. Previously, he was head of communications for ASCD, working closely with the organization's authors, product developers, administrator members, constituent leaders, and advocacy teams on a diverse array of initiatives. Ross has created and/or hosted dozens of podcast series, written a number of white papers and ebooks, is a contributing editor to Educate AI Magazine, and has been a contributor to Entrepreneur, The Learning Counsel, edCircuit, Access & Equity PreK-12, and more.Ross serves on the advisory boards for Shenandoah University's Transformative Leadership program and Morning Brew Learning. In 2023, he was listed as a Top 10 leadership coach of the year and was profiled by CIO Views as one of the visionary leaders transforming education. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Business advice that creates ethical dilemmas for companies selling products to school districts.✅Can companies stand for equity without sacrificing product quality and customer service? ✅Who is the true end-user when products are sold to schools?✅When a product isn't resulting in increased student outcomes, is it really just about the quality of the product? ✅Who is making purchasing decisions for schools, and what matters to them? Municipalities frequently add phosphate-based products for corrosion, scale, and staining control. Unknown sources of phosphate can certainly throw a boiler or cooling tower program out of control. Start with the orthophosphate test. If polyphosphates are used, you may need to run a digestion procedure or have your lab do it. Lastly, calling your municipality to ask if they use phosphate-based products in their water may actually be the first place to start. Don't let an unknown phosphate source throw your water treatment program out of control. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Culture Rules: The Leader's Guide to Creating the Ultimate Competitive Advantage is Mark's 11th book. He currently has over one million books in print in more than twenty-five languages. Ross and Mark discuss: 71% of U.S. leaders believe culture is their #1 most powerful tool to drive performance, but enhancing culture ranks low on their priority list — why the gap? First move: decide and declare what you're trying to create. Culture needs to be explicit. The 3 Culture Rules: Aspire, Amplify, Adapt What does culture mean to your customers? Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wanted to shift the company from being “know-it-alls” to “learn-it-alls” — what did Mark learn while working on the book? In this shorter episode, Kim shares with you some exciting news about the podcast and how you can be featured on it.
To effectively create demand you need to give away your best content for free. But what if your content is in fact your product? This is a big blocker for independent consultants when they want to create demand. By giving away the information that makes them valuable, they think that people will no longer need to work with them. Here's the thing: People don't hire consultants for their knowledge of a subject matter. In fact, that knowledge is likely a commodity. People hire consultants to increase their likelihood of success in implementing that knowledge. What happens when you horde all your knowledge until a sales process is you get lumped in with other vendors as a commodity. And when you're viewed as a commodity, you have to compete on price, which is not a good place to be. In this episode, Chris talks about how consultants can win using the same demand gen principles that we use at Refine Labs to help some of the best B2B SaaS companies out there. Episode Notes When Jesus is accused of casting out demons by the "Prince of Demons" (Matt 12), he asks the Pharisees a peculiar question: "Then by who do your sons cast them out?" And much later, we read about the sons of the high priest casting out demons - in the name of Yeshua of all names! But for them, using His name was like a secret word that they thought would give them authority. Instead, the demons overpowered them, leaving them running and naked. True biblical authority is not about believing a certain pronunciation of a name has power, that's called magic. Instead, it's KNOWING the PERSON behind the name of Lord Yeshua. In this video, we talk about casting out demons, Christian authority, and the counterfeit powers.
