You don't put Christian Nielsen, Michael DiGiovanni, Carlin Trammel, Shawn Robare, William Bruce West, Rob Graham, Michael May, Jeeg, and Paxton Holley in a room together and not record a podcast. While at C2E2, the group (minus Jeff Somogyi who sadly was not feeling well that evening) gathered in Christian and DiGio's hotel room to revive the classic Atomic Geeks topic: "Robot, Monkey, Michael Caine." Each person suggests a movie, TV show, event, etc. and discuss what would best improve it: a monkey, a robot, or... well, you'll see.
In 2015, the Nerd Lunch crew met up with most of the Atomic Geeks and assorted members of the Fourth Chair Army at C2E2 in Chicago. Ten years later, it's time to get together again with even more friends. The group this time included Carlin Trammel, William Bruce West, Jeeg, Paxton Holley, Jeff Somogyi, Shawn Robare, Michael May, Rob Graham, Christian Nielsen, and Michael DiGiovanni. In this audio diary, we learn about how the trip came together, check in with the attendees at various points of the weekend, and tease a very special podcast episode that we recorded there and will be Coming Soon.
Michael and Rob invite Michael DiGiovanni, Christian Nielsen, and Paxton Holley to help cast an imaginary remake of Silverado. Each of our five casting directors have scoured Hollywood for the perfect actors to update the roles of Emmett, Paden, Mal, Jake, Rae, and Cobb, plus other characters we wanted to think about. We've brought our top candidates to the conference room to make final decisions, but also to discuss possible tweaks to the script and even suggest a director.
Merry Christmas! As our very special gift to you, Michael, Rob, Michael DiGiovanni, and Jody Collins don't just talk about our favorite Christmas songs. We put them into brackets and vote on them until we determine the Greatest Christmas Song of All Time!
CFJ founding member Michael DiGiovanni is home for the holidays filling in for Evan for this episode as he and Jeff watch the 1974 cult classic Black Christmas. Listen as the fellas determine if this qualifies as a Christmas movie, discuss the films influence and try to properly pronouce Hussey.
Michael and Rob are joined by Carlin Trammel and Michael DiGiovanni to talk about collectible movie tie-in glasses. They discuss various ones they've collected over the years, including recent ones. But the highlight of the episode is when each panelist creates a whole line of four glasses for a movie that never got them. Carlin even created mock-ups of his line, which you can see below.

Yesterday, Michael DiGiovanni and Michael May talked about Christmas Vacation and how - during their prep for that conversation - they discovered the existence of a weird sequel called Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure. Of course they had to come back and talk about it. And they invited Paxton Holley to do that with them.
We're re-running a stretch of silly comedies from the Sleigh Bell Cinema podcast, so of course we can't get too far into that without talking about National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. That's exactly what Michael May and Michael DiGiovanni did and Michael May's opinion of the movie changed as a result.
Michael, Rob, and Michael DiGiovanni talk about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Star Wars Visions Season 2, Ted Lasso Season 3, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, the Our Man Flint movies, Hammer's Frankenstein movies, Peter Pan and Wendy (2023), streaming service avatars, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Silo, Disney's Stan Lee documentary, how our buying and reading of comics has changed, aging and wisdom, budgeting entertainment time, and other things they've been watching and thinking about.
As Pax recovers from vacation, Evan returns to the Lounge for a bit with Michael, Rob, and guest-lounger Michael DiGiovanni. In this first half of the discussion, the conversation includes butt tattoos, underwear preferences, Joe Hill, nepotism, how horror works in books vs film, jazz trombone, William T Riker, Fourth Chair Carryover Questions, the difference between the book and movie versions of Prisoner of Azkaban, The New Classic Film Jerks, the Off Panel comic book interview podcast, the Purple Stuff podcast, letting your kids introduce you to new music, celebrity podcasts, Action Comics, Dawn of DC, Star Trek: Double Double by Michael Jan Friedman, Cassandra Cain as Batgirl, and X-Men comics.
Michael and Rob are joined by Michael DiGiovanni and William Bruce West to imagine a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that includes characters from the wide array of toys, movies, and TV series that Marvel Comics has licensed over the years.
In a completely original idea - Nerd Lunch definitely did not do this exact same topic on Episode 320 of their show - Michael and Rob welcome Evan Hanson, Paxton Holley, and Michael DiGiovanni to help a few restaurants create special menus inspired by Christmas movies.
Back on Episode 15 of the old Fourth Chair Army Invasion show, we imagined a live-action TV version of a DC Super Hero Holiday Special comic. Now it's Marvel's turn as Michael and Rob welcome Michael DiGiovanni, Mike Westfall, and Ben Graham to assign each other super heroes and holiday elements to turn into segments on a Marvelous Holiday Special.
In this very environmentally aware edition of the official holiday podcast for people who make hockey sweaters for vermin, we’re responsibly deforesting our way back to 1980 to dig up “The Christmas Raccoons,” the first appearance of early Disney Channel imports The Raccoons and the greedy Cyril Sneer. On This Episode:Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), generous married couple’s permanent houseguest in a tree that’s clearly bigger on the inside.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), the barely clothed college graduate son of a lumber baron, from The Atomic Geeks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and Classic Film Jerks.Christian Nielsen (@hunkburger), whom I may or may not have completely dreamed up, from The Atomic Geeks and Pop Culture Retrofit.Topics and Tangents:This special and an accompanying story album were narrated by Rich Little, a “Man of a Thousand Voices,” in his own, regular voice. The voice of Forest Ranger Dan is Rupert Holmes, the singer/songwriter behind “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”Tammy Bourne (Julie) and Hadley Kay (Tommy) were both in other movies in 1980 as children who fall from a great height. The Raccoons’ tree is clearly a lot bigger on the inside. The classic tropes of rolling down a snowy hill into a giant snowball and the big dust ball of violence.Much of this special is contained in an identical dream by both kids and possibly also their dog. From there, it’s hard to tell what parts were the dream and what parts weren’t. Maybe it’s all in St. Elsewhere’s Snow Globe Universe of Tommy Westphall (no relation).Previous Podcast Episodes Mentioned:Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Season 3, Episode 12)Commercial Break:Canadian Tire’s “Scrooge Approved” Prices, 1987Podcast Promo:Christmas Creeps, keeping the Christmas spirit alive all year round through the magic of terrible holiday films.“The Christmas Raccoons” ©1980 PFS Christmas Raccoons / PFS Pooled Film Services, Inc.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Instagram @adventcalendarhouse, and on Twitter @adventcalhouse.

Michael May and Rob Graham welcome Michael DiGiovanni and Kay to revisit a classic Nerd Lunch topic. We put together movie triple-features around the themes of witches, soundtracks, walking away from explosions, and movies that make us feel alive.
On another Scrooge Sunday edition of the Advent Calendar House, we fly back in time to 1978 to revisit Rankin/Bass’s turn at “A Christmas Carol,” “The Stingiest Man in Town.”On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), your ghost host of Christmases Past and Present.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), the scariest door knocker in all of Scroogedom, from the Classic Film Jerks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and The Atomic Geeks podcasts.Michael May (@michaelmaycomix), hobo insect taking a break from rockin’ and rollin’ all week long, from his Adventure Blog and the Sleigh Bell Cinema, Mystery Movie Night, and AfterLUNCH podcasts.Topics and TangentsThis is specifically an adaptation of a 1956 production on “The Alcoa Hour,” starring Basil Rathbone as Scrooge. Rankin/Bass uses most of the songs from that special. The original “Stingiest Man in Town” on Sleigh Bell Cinema.Michael May’s annual coverage of scenes from this and other “Christmas Carol” adaptations.Sonny Melendrez (Bob Cratchit) in “You and Me, Kid.”This has my all-time favorite, super creepy version of Marley’s face appearing on Scrooge’s door knocker. This special gets older Belle completely wrong.Tiny Tim has skinny robot legs. The eldest Cratchit sibling, Martha, is Debbie Clinger of the Clinger Sisters, a.k.a. Superchick from the “Krofft Supershow” host band Kaptain Kool and the Kongs.Rankin/Bass should have made a south seas-themed special called “Christmas Island.”Scrooge’s grave morphing into a giant devil face is a reminder in hindsight that this special was animated in Japan by Topcraft, the predecessor to Studio Ghibli.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedThe First Easter Rabbit (Season 1, Bonus)’Twas the Night Before Christmas (Season 2, Episode 3)Mickey’s Christmas Carol (Season 3, Episode 1)Cricket on the Hearth (Season 3, Episode 4)Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July (Season 4, Episode 2)The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold (Season 4, Episode 9)“The Stingiest Man in Town” © 1978 Rankin/Bass Productions.Commercial Break: Glad Trash Bags Commercial starring Tom Bosley, 1981.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.
Sail back to 1981 with us as we dig up Rankin/Bass’s penultimate and possibly most obscure stop-motion Christmas special ever, “The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold,” which may or may not only exist because they had the rights to “Christmas in Killarney” and needed someplace to put it.On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), tiny but prolific cobbler who only makes shoes in primary colors.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), who insists on hiding his life savings in a magic cave, from the Classic Film Jerks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and the Atomic Geeks podcasts.Michael May (@michaelmaycomix), the Lord of the Leprechauns, of his Adventure Blog and the Sleigh Bell Cinema, Mystery Movie Night, and AfterLUNCH podcasts.Topics and TangentsKen Jennings (the voice of Dinty Doyle, not the “Jeopardy!” guy) in the short-lived Epcot Center attraction, “The Astuter Computer Revue.”Mag the Hag’s entrance reminds me of Rita Repulsa in the opening of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.”Blarney Kilakilarney and his wife are a poster Irish couple and the reason everyone’s advice at your wedding is: “Never go to bed angry.”This special keeps adding new rules about how both banshees and rainbows work, like they’re Mogwai. The Leprechauns’ “phantom island of Tralee” shares a name with an actual mainland town in Ireland, but is closer to Dursey Island, population (as of 2016): 4.The only thing many remember about this special is its Nightmare Face reveal that a beautiful woman Dinty finds washed ashore is the banshee in disguise.According to the Christmas Specials Wiki, Arthur Rankin said a promotion was planned involving prizes buried in random places around the United States for children to dig up, but was abandoned for safety concerns.“Jack O’Lantern,” from Rankin/Bass’s “Festival of Family Classics” TV series, featuring a leprechaun disguised as a pumpkin.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedFrosty the Snowman (Season 1, Episode 1)The First Easter Rabbit (Season 1, Bonus)The Star Wars Holiday Special (Season 2, Episode 2)The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (Season 3, Episode 5)Pinocchio’s Christmas (Season 3, Episode 2)Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Season 3, Episode 12)“The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold” © 1981 Rankin/Bass Productions.Commercial Break: “Gremlins” Gizmo Plush Pet, 1984.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.

After a discussion of what movie-based TV shows have worked (and which haven't), the panel pitches TV shows based on A League of Their Own, Gremlins, Xanadu, Tomorrowland, and Pretty in Pink.
For Cineversary podcast episode #21, host Erik Martin yuks it up with guests Michael Digiovanni and Andrew Bloom, hosts of the Classic Film Jerks podcast, to honor the 40th anniversary of one of the funniest flicks ever, "Airplane!", directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. Collectively, they examine why this comedy gem is worth celebrating all these years later, its cultural impact and legacy, what we can learn from the picture today, how it has stood the test of time, and more. Michael Digiovanni returns to the Fourth Chair for one last Christmas sleigh ride. To bring everything full circle with Digio, this year we redo Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Should this sequel have been a fairy tale in New York? Was Mr. Duncan a ghost or should he be? And who the hell is Harv? Listen for the answers to these burning questions and more as we attempt to fix this Christopher Columbus joint.

The holiday tradition continues as Michael DiGiovanni returns to the Fourth Chair for the 2018 Nerd Lunch Christmas spectacular. This year we're giving the holiday treatment to our Movie Menus franchise topic and creating Christmas movie tie-in menus for some popular restaurants. After years of teasing it, the Nerd Lunch Crew finally do it. They rewatched all the Matrix movies and finally have that discussion. The first allegedly changed the face of filmmaking, but the follow up are a bit more controversial in what they delivered. Michael DiGiovanni from Classic Film Jerks joins the show to do a structured "Drive By" discussion on the series.
It's the most wonderful time of the year as we once again welcome Michael DiGiovanni to the Fourth Chair for the Nerd Lunch Christmas spectacular. This year we create Christmas specials for characters and celebrities that never had them but should have. First on the docket are pitches for an idea we joked about last year: The Doof Warrior Christmas Special. After you've enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out DiGio's previous Christmas appearances dating back to 2012.

Nerd Lunch's holiday celebration begins this week as Michael DiGiovanni returns to the Fourth Chair to continue our Christmas tradition. This year we pay homage to holiday themed TV episodes. Rather than recounting our favorites, we create Christmas crossover events that we wish existed for specific TV lineups of years gone by. If you ever wanted to know how the shows of the 1985-86 NBC primetime lineup might spend the holidays together (and who didn't?), this is the episode for you. It's a fun discussion that wanders into the room full of crazy more than once along the way. Happy Holidays from all of us at Nerd Lunch!
