Following up on our C2E2 conversation about things that could be improved by monkeys, robots, or Michael Caine, please enjoy this special rerun of the first time that topic appeared on the Atomic Geeks podcast. With special thanks to Carlin Trammel for the idea and Christian Nielsen for the audio and permission.
You don't put Christian Nielsen, Michael DiGiovanni, Carlin Trammel, Shawn Robare, William Bruce West, Rob Graham, Michael May, Jeeg, and Paxton Holley in a room together and not record a podcast. While at C2E2, the group (minus Jeff Somogyi who sadly was not feeling well that evening) gathered in Christian and DiGio's hotel room to revive the classic Atomic Geeks topic: "Robot, Monkey, Michael Caine." Each person suggests a movie, TV show, event, etc. and discuss what would best improve it: a monkey, a robot, or... well, you'll see.
In 2015, the Nerd Lunch crew met up with most of the Atomic Geeks and assorted members of the Fourth Chair Army at C2E2 in Chicago. Ten years later, it's time to get together again with even more friends. The group this time included Carlin Trammel, William Bruce West, Jeeg, Paxton Holley, Jeff Somogyi, Shawn Robare, Michael May, Rob Graham, Christian Nielsen, and Michael DiGiovanni. In this audio diary, we learn about how the trip came together, check in with the attendees at various points of the weekend, and tease a very special podcast episode that we recorded there and will be Coming Soon.
Apparently sequels needed to be made and The Atomic Geeks made some for both of your ears.
We select some of our favourite super persons and then try to murder them with extreme prejudice. Take that Ambush Bug. DISCLAIMER: Ambush Bug may not be discussed. Sorry.
In this very environmentally aware edition of the official holiday podcast for people who make hockey sweaters for vermin, we’re responsibly deforesting our way back to 1980 to dig up “The Christmas Raccoons,” the first appearance of early Disney Channel imports The Raccoons and the greedy Cyril Sneer. On This Episode:Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), generous married couple’s permanent houseguest in a tree that’s clearly bigger on the inside.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), the barely clothed college graduate son of a lumber baron, from The Atomic Geeks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and Classic Film Jerks.Christian Nielsen (@hunkburger), whom I may or may not have completely dreamed up, from The Atomic Geeks and Pop Culture Retrofit.Topics and Tangents:This special and an accompanying story album were narrated by Rich Little, a “Man of a Thousand Voices,” in his own, regular voice. The voice of Forest Ranger Dan is Rupert Holmes, the singer/songwriter behind “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”Tammy Bourne (Julie) and Hadley Kay (Tommy) were both in other movies in 1980 as children who fall from a great height. The Raccoons’ tree is clearly a lot bigger on the inside. The classic tropes of rolling down a snowy hill into a giant snowball and the big dust ball of violence.Much of this special is contained in an identical dream by both kids and possibly also their dog. From there, it’s hard to tell what parts were the dream and what parts weren’t. Maybe it’s all in St. Elsewhere’s Snow Globe Universe of Tommy Westphall (no relation).Previous Podcast Episodes Mentioned:Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Season 3, Episode 12)Commercial Break:Canadian Tire’s “Scrooge Approved” Prices, 1987Podcast Promo:Christmas Creeps, keeping the Christmas spirit alive all year round through the magic of terrible holiday films.“The Christmas Raccoons” ©1980 PFS Christmas Raccoons / PFS Pooled Film Services, Inc.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Instagram @adventcalendarhouse, and on Twitter @adventcalhouse.

On another Scrooge Sunday edition of the Advent Calendar House, we fly back in time to 1978 to revisit Rankin/Bass’s turn at “A Christmas Carol,” “The Stingiest Man in Town.”On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), your ghost host of Christmases Past and Present.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), the scariest door knocker in all of Scroogedom, from the Classic Film Jerks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and The Atomic Geeks podcasts.Michael May (@michaelmaycomix), hobo insect taking a break from rockin’ and rollin’ all week long, from his Adventure Blog and the Sleigh Bell Cinema, Mystery Movie Night, and AfterLUNCH podcasts.Topics and TangentsThis is specifically an adaptation of a 1956 production on “The Alcoa Hour,” starring Basil Rathbone as Scrooge. Rankin/Bass uses most of the songs from that special. The original “Stingiest Man in Town” on Sleigh Bell Cinema.Michael May’s annual coverage of scenes from this and other “Christmas Carol” adaptations.Sonny Melendrez (Bob Cratchit) in “You and Me, Kid.”This has my all-time favorite, super creepy version of Marley’s face appearing on Scrooge’s door knocker. This special gets older Belle completely wrong.Tiny Tim has skinny robot legs. The eldest Cratchit sibling, Martha, is Debbie Clinger of the Clinger Sisters, a.k.a. Superchick from the “Krofft Supershow” host band Kaptain Kool and the Kongs.Rankin/Bass should have made a south seas-themed special called “Christmas Island.”Scrooge’s grave morphing into a giant devil face is a reminder in hindsight that this special was animated in Japan by Topcraft, the predecessor to Studio Ghibli.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedThe First Easter Rabbit (Season 1, Bonus)’Twas the Night Before Christmas (Season 2, Episode 3)Mickey’s Christmas Carol (Season 3, Episode 1)Cricket on the Hearth (Season 3, Episode 4)Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July (Season 4, Episode 2)The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold (Season 4, Episode 9)“The Stingiest Man in Town” © 1978 Rankin/Bass Productions.Commercial Break: Glad Trash Bags Commercial starring Tom Bosley, 1981.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.
Sail back to 1981 with us as we dig up Rankin/Bass’s penultimate and possibly most obscure stop-motion Christmas special ever, “The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold,” which may or may not only exist because they had the rights to “Christmas in Killarney” and needed someplace to put it.On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), tiny but prolific cobbler who only makes shoes in primary colors.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), who insists on hiding his life savings in a magic cave, from the Classic Film Jerks, Pop Culture Retrofit, and the Atomic Geeks podcasts.Michael May (@michaelmaycomix), the Lord of the Leprechauns, of his Adventure Blog and the Sleigh Bell Cinema, Mystery Movie Night, and AfterLUNCH podcasts.Topics and TangentsKen Jennings (the voice of Dinty Doyle, not the “Jeopardy!” guy) in the short-lived Epcot Center attraction, “The Astuter Computer Revue.”Mag the Hag’s entrance reminds me of Rita Repulsa in the opening of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.”Blarney Kilakilarney and his wife are a poster Irish couple and the reason everyone’s advice at your wedding is: “Never go to bed angry.”This special keeps adding new rules about how both banshees and rainbows work, like they’re Mogwai. The Leprechauns’ “phantom island of Tralee” shares a name with an actual mainland town in Ireland, but is closer to Dursey Island, population (as of 2016): 4.The only thing many remember about this special is its Nightmare Face reveal that a beautiful woman Dinty finds washed ashore is the banshee in disguise.According to the Christmas Specials Wiki, Arthur Rankin said a promotion was planned involving prizes buried in random places around the United States for children to dig up, but was abandoned for safety concerns.“Jack O’Lantern,” from Rankin/Bass’s “Festival of Family Classics” TV series, featuring a leprechaun disguised as a pumpkin.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedFrosty the Snowman (Season 1, Episode 1)The First Easter Rabbit (Season 1, Bonus)The Star Wars Holiday Special (Season 2, Episode 2)The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (Season 3, Episode 5)Pinocchio’s Christmas (Season 3, Episode 2)Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Season 3, Episode 12)“The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold” © 1981 Rankin/Bass Productions.Commercial Break: “Gremlins” Gizmo Plush Pet, 1984.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.
Apparently Studio Executives attacked and The Atomic Geeks podcasted about it. I hope not too many lives were lost.
We celebrated Christmas many years ago on the podcast. I'm sure we used the words Yule Log.
In the year 2010 The Atomic Geeks decided to look ahead for some reason.
This episode has something to do with television and The Atomic Geeks speak about it in a podcast fashion.
We had a party. I hope we had fun.
Quick Introduction to The Atomic Geeks Podcast
The Advent Calendar House gets overrun by earworms strong enough to burrow into wood as we carve into the 1980 Rankin/Bass TV special, “Pinocchio’s Christmas.”On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), buxom and unusually lightning-susceptible feline.Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks), from the Atomic Geeks, Classic Film Jerks, and Pop Culture Retrofit podcasts.Michael May (@michaelmaycomix) of his Adventure Blog and the Sleigh Bell Cinema, Mystery Movie Night, and Nerd Lunch Fourth Chair Army Invasion podcasts, among many others.Topics and TangentsTwo songs, “Dancin’” and “The Very Best Friend I Ever Had,” were cut from and later restored to TV broadcasts.“Starstuff,” a Philadelphia market, Saturday morning kids’ sci-fi TV series starring Todd Porter, the voice of Pinocchio. The most disappointing gifts we’ve ever received, including what Santa gave me after I allegedly misspelled “Alpha Critters.”We question the less-than-clear laws that govern Pinocchio’s lie-detecting nose, which appear to grant him a mulligan here. Those classic Christmas puppet show characters, Don Quixote and an alligator. The strange flash-forward to the rest of Pinocchio’s better-known adventures, even though Rankin/Bass already made a Pinocchio TV series, its first ever stop-motion animation project.Previous Episodes of This Podcast MentionedSeason 1, Episode 1: Frosty the SnowmanSeason 2, Episode 1: How the Grinch Stole ChristmasSeason 2, Episode 3: ’Twas the Night Before ChristmasSeason 2, Episode 5: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus“Pinocchio’s Christmas” ©1980 Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.
Day 1: It’s the season premiere! We take a look at 3 versions of Dr. Seuss’s classic Christmas tale, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” from 1966, 2000, and 2018. On this episode Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), a tiny chef carried on a covered dinner plate by a series of exponentially larger chefs. Michael DiGiovanni (@theatomicgeeks) of The Atomic Geeks, Classic Film Jerks, and Pop Culture Retrofit podcasts. Michael May (@michaelmaycomix) of his Adventure Blog, home to roughly 39½ different podcasts, including the new Sleigh Bell Cinema, covering Christmas movies. Topics and Tangents The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T., Dr. Seuss’s first — and last — feature film screenplay, which he disliked so much, he almost refused to agree to a Grinch TV special. DiGio discovers Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice behind “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” was also Tony the Tiger. Grinchmas, the annual Christmas celebration at Universal Studios Hollywood and Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. How Murray Saved Christmas, a 2014 animated TV special starring Jerry Stiller that just made my to-do list. DiGio from The Atomic Geeks drops by to keep the Fourth Chair warm. The podcasters, inspired by the "Original Ghost Busters" from the 1970s decide to concoct other things that were the "original" versions of popular pop culture properties. Hear about the "original" Veronica Mars, the "original" Transformers, the "original" Preacher, and the "original" Knight Rider. Also, find out how long the crew can go without using the TAG googling music.

After years of talking about the DC cinema plans, the Batman v Superman movie has descended upon us like a vigilante in the night. And Pax and CT have now seen this along with friend from The Atomic Geeks, Michael DiGiovanni. And boy, we all have got some things to get off our chest. Disclaimer: These are our opinions and should not be construed as us imposing our beliefs on you. I know that's the popular thing to do on the internet, but we're interested in genuine discussion.

Continuing our holiday tradition, Michael DiGiovanni from The Atomic Geeks joins us to ring in the holiday season. On the docket this year is a quest to assemble the ultimate Hallmark Channel or ABC Family quality Christmas romance movie. We don't quite get there, but we do pitch four excellent examples of the genre and empty IMDB's reservoir of 90s D-list celebrities in a stunt casting exercise you won't want to miss.

Rasslin' talk takes over Nerd Lunch once again as Jeeg, Mike Downs from the Atomic Geeks, Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ, and RD Reynolds of WrestleCrap fame come together to wax poetic about the 1990s battle for pro-wrestling (and cable TV) dominance between WCW and WWF/WWE. One episode is not enough to tackle the topic, but the crew hits the highs, lows, and aftermath of this golden age of wrestling. Enjoy and let us know your favorite moments of The Monday Night Wars!

Digio from The Atomic Geeks drops by for his seasonal visit to spread some holiday podcasting cheer. This week the nerds put together some Christmas themed triple features of movies and TV specials. Not surprisingly the discussion features a lot of Rudolph, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and other Rankin/Bass specials, but somehow the Flintstones, Star Trek: Generations, Drew Barrymore, and Pierce Brosnan come up as well. This week's Nerd To Dos feature Orphan Black, The 100, The Battle of the Five Armies, and some basketball memoirs (?).

The Nerd Lunch crew welcome back returning guest Kay from Fangirlblog.com and the Hyperspace Theories Podcast. After actually discussing a little "Geek News" (™The Atomic Geeks), the podcasters talk about two classic Muppet Christmas productions, Muppet Family Christmas and A Muppet Christmas Carol. In the discussion are thoughts on how they work as annual viewing traditions, their overall quality and their place in history as one of the last Jim Henson Muppet projects and one of the first without him. You could call "Nerd To-Dos" "Nerd To-Whos" this week as there are two Doctor Who items. Also Star Wars book reading and additional Christmas special watching makes the lists.

It's another set of theme shows for Nerd Lunch as we begin "The Atomic Weeks!" We celebrate along with The Atomic Geeks as they surpass their five-year mark by having each of them as a guest on our show. First up, former Geek, Andrew Bloom (now of Classic Film Jerks) joins us to discuss the Nerd Lunch take on Lent. We are each tasked to come up with something we'd give up from the "nerd" and "lunch" arenas. Besides tomatoes, what could we possibly live without for 40 days?! Nerd To-Dos feature books, Burn Notice and talk of a Nerd Lunch trip.

After 20 months of doing the podcast, we finally decide it's time to cover Joss Whedon's sci-fi western classic, Firefly and the follow-up movie Serenity. And to occupy the fourth treadmill (?) for this conversation we call in our own big damn hero, Mark Dury. We recap our history with Mr. Whedon at the time of Firefly's premiere, personal introductions to the show, favorite episodes, favorite characters, thoughts on Serenity as a wrap-up to the show, and whether it should ever come back. After our main discussion we give our own take on the Star Trek TOS crew / Firefly versus match up from Episode 200 of The Atomic Geeks. In our Nerd To-Dos, we hear about Cowboy Bebop, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, The Transformers: The Movie, and a rewatching of Farscape.

The Atomic Geeks' very own Cosmic Viking, Christian Nielsen, joins CT and Pax for a blockbuster sized discussion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. We cover all the bases from plot to casting to Batman's throaty voice to "giant, black phallic symbols". Listen to find out what we liked, what bones we have to pick, and what Nolan could have learned from the Rocky movies. This week's Nerd To-Dos feature the yin and yang of the Morning Glories comic book and the Six Million Dollar Man TV show.

This week’s Nerd To-Dos feature the yin and yang of the Morning Glories comic book and the Six Million Dollar Man TV show.
Nerd Lunch's second entry into this year's [expletive] TAG Network Summer Crossover Series features a whole cast of guests. This week's Nerd To-Dos features talk about Batman, G.I. Joe and the relaunch of a new [expletive] website. Find your [expletive] sonic screwdriver and download now!
The Atomic Geeks Podcast is no more, but this first installment of the TAG Network Crossover lives on when Pax and Jeeg visited with Christian and Andrew and talked about Geek Mashups.

Pax, CT, Shawn Robare, and TAG Irregular Mark Dury provide our take on expanded universes. We discuss our favorite EUs from Star Wars to the Buffyverse, talk about what works or doesn't work in EU, and offer up some properties we wish had EU. When we're done here, be sure to check out this week's episode of The Atomic Geeks podcast for even more speechifying on EUs. Our Nerd To-Dos feature a Formula 1 racing documentary (huh?), new TMNT toys, more Planet of the Apes, and some Dark Knight Rises.

The Atomic Geeks very own Andrew Bloom takes over the fourth chair this week and runs Pax, Jeeg, and CT though a little game of Would You Rather. The questions cover topics that are fun for all ages: the Nerd Lunch crew dying in various ways, the Nerd Lunch crew killing various pop culture heroes, the Nerd Lunch crew in ambiguously gay situations, and CT's beard. The only question remaining is would you rather keep reading this description or listen to the episode already?

Our old buddy Fitz returns to the show for our companion piece to Episode 148 of The Atomic Geeks, "Geek Dads!". We spend the first part of the show talking about our upbringing and the formative experiences that made us nerds, geeks, dorks, and poindexters. After that we briefly touch on how we hope to raise the next generation of nerds. In our To-Dos this week, we learn about Fitz's initiative to crowdsource toy shopping, hear CT's latest update on his quest for Young Justice action figures, and get a mini-review of "Return to Oz" from Pax.

This week CT, Pax, and Jeeg are joined by blogger and Atomic Geeks superfan Chris Lockhart for a discussion of how Star Trek could have changed if some key events worked out differently. What if Scotty was Irish instead? What if Riker hadn't grown a beard? What if Janeway's animal guide had been a lemur? Actually we don't talk about any of those scenarios, but the possibilities of a Star Trek without Shatner, the 1970s Phase II series, and Captain Riker are all on the agenda. In our Nerd To-Dos, we find out which nerd is already making plans for season 2 of Sherlock and talk more about the Ghost Rider sequel than anyone could have expected.

It's our big 25th episode and to celebrate we're not only borrowing a signature topic from our podcasting brothers The Atomic Geeks but one of the Geeks as well, Michael DiGiovanni. DiGio sits in for our own take on “Its A Re-Do” as we tackle America's favorite teen angsty Superman show, Smallville. Listen to find out if we think the show needed more tights, more flight, or more Degrassi High. This week's Nerd To-Dos run the gamut from Buck Rogers to DC Comics, plus the weekend for Pax's viewing if Episode I in 3D has finally arrived.

Announcing the newest venture by Nerd Lunch...a podcast! That's right, we're taking the discussions we've made infamous one step further and having them in auditory form. Jeeg and I will be joined by our good friend Paxton Holley from the Cavalcade of Awesome to hash out nerdy and foodie topics. And on occasion, we'll be joined by other special guests as well. We are happy to be the first podcast to be released under the banner of The Atomic Geeks Podcasting Network. A couple of podcasts today, tomorrow the world. In episode one, CT, Jeeg, and Paxton get to know one another a little better by taking some Internet personality tests. Find out which nerd is C-3PO, which is Chuck Norris, and who could survive the longest if chained to a velociraptor. Plus one of the nerds reveals an impressive and somewhat frightening knowledge of the Care Bears. If you want to play along at home, you can check out the quizzes we took here: BrainFall.com Oatmeal Quizzes Check out the first episode and let us know what you think.
