There were some big events that happened this weekend with Tough Mudder Infinity in Pittsburg, the final Conquer the Gauntlet under the Mainprize ownership, the first of the Savage Point Series races in Maryland, and the Spartan European Championships, but we covered the final BoldrDash OCR in Exeter, RI! BoldrDash as a race series had a huge role to play in our overall OCR history! It was Mike's 9th ever OCR, and Katelyn's 7th ever OCR back on May 3rd 2014 (video here). We have also volunteered more at this race than any other, whether it was Mike waking up really early to volunteer all day at an obstacle, or helping people through the course with the Find Your Bold/all abilities team! While it didn't have the huge reputation around the country or even world like FIT Challenge had with the annual community awards, it was still an integral aspect of local OCR in New England! Lynn Hall started these events back in 2011, has put on events at incredible venues such as beaches, ski hills, and former amusement park land, before settling at a permanent course at Canonicus the past few years. We wish Lynn the best in what she continues to do with Find Your Bold! Lastly, if you have information as to the spelling or last name of the guests in this episode, we would appreciate it. 0:00 – 6:40 – Intro 6:40 – 18:17 – Quick News 18:17 – 21:03 – Content Preface 21:03 - 25:27 - Start Line Audio 25:27 - 1:13:29 - Interviews (Laura Conkelin, Lisa Addelin, and Emily Addelin, Jasmine Somatis, Kya, and Kaleen, Katie Callahan, Eric, Anthony, Jose, Jack, and Jesus, Andy, and Matt, Caroline Fritz, Becky, Steve Bacon, Jacqueline, Connor Nolan, and Sandra Pearson, Mike, Kristen, Angelica, Dazar, Amir, and Kesha, Lee Carney, and Tracy Carney, Ryan McGowan, Joe Cronin, and Kevin LaPlatney, Greg Hall, David, Josh Fiore, Amy Haskell, Andy Haskell, Mike Stefano) 1:13:29 - 1:21:35 - Lynn Hall Interview 1:21:35 - End – Outro Next weekend we will have an episode on Spartan Pan American Championship in Seattle, the Killington Spartan Beast, or something else! ____ News Stories: Mike Lozan Death and Celebration of Life Run Obstacle Wonderland Course on Plattekill Day Anthony Kunkle Taking on OCRWC Evan Perperis New Book Carlo's Dog Peaches Cerus Fitness News Shield Justice Looking for Tough Mudder Sonoma 2023 Participants (Can't Find Ad but Here is Related Reddit Post) We Were Featured in OCR Directory Jack Carpenter's Brain Tumor Tyler Matechak Taking on The Barkley Fall Classic 50K Lindsay Webster Registered for Canadian Trail Racing Championships Spartan Canada National Series Kelowna Beast Podiums Spartan Kelowna Super Podiums Spartan Canadian National Series Results Spartan West Virginia Beast Podiums Spartan West Virginia Super Podiums Savage Maryland Podiums Car Seesaw Secret Link Baba Transition Secret Link Gym Pokemon Secret Link Old Gymnast Secret Link Old Runners Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 71. We drove the 3 hours to Greenville, NY to cover the Ultra Viking 8 Hour (Northeast Ultra Cup Finale)/ Final Raid/ whatever we called their last event! The race director Asa Coddington aka OCR Yoda has been a prominant member in the OCR community here in the northeast so it was a big blow that he announced that his last event would been this year. Known for very difficult and historic obstacles, interesting penalties, and excellent medals the loss of this race will have a large impact on the sport. There was also a night trail race that we ran and covered that event as well. Once again, we just had the third New England OCR Expo and it is easily the most involved Mike has been! Mike Stefano, co-host of Obstacle Running Adventures, delivers a fantastic conversation on running, mental health, and his experiences building his business around endurance racing.
Season 3 Episode 7 In this episode Jayybone sits down with a fellow former upper classman Mike Stefano from Cardinal Spellman. I need to mention how we know each other and the school we've come from along with a tease of my ten year reunion happening on September 11th at Waterclub in Marina Bay. After catching up and seeing what's been going on throughout the years we find out why ive had Mike come on the show today. Mike is actually also the host of his own podcast called Obstacle Running Adventures. Started in 2012 Mike explains how he left his comfort zone only to find out where he was most comfortable which you wouldn't believe is in obstacle courses. Not only does this podcast slap because of the interviews he does with notables of course racing but because he also has experience as well. In this you'll hear about specific courses, the battles and injuries he's over come along with his training and recovery time. Spartan has officially purchased Tough Mudder! This is the biggest news in the OCR industry since the OCR industry became a thing approximately 10 years ago. We open the episode with a brief discussion of the Spartan/Tough Mudder purchase story so far. It has been an emotional journey. This past weekend was the first race of the 2020 Spartan US National Series in Jacksonville, Florida. Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster took home the wins for the men and the women. On today's episode, we talk with the top four male finishers about their race in Jacksonville. We will talk with the top female finishers in future episodes. (Note on that below). Each man we talked with had a slightly different take on the race, and we talked about slightly different topics with each one. Ryan Atkins commented on OCR and social media during the off-season. We start the show with a quick update on Spartan's potential purchase of Tough Mudder. It might happen, but the Tough Mudder co-founders are blocking the deal. If a deal doesn't happen, Tough Mudder is being forced toward bankruptcy by vendors they failed to pay in 2019. --- While Tough Mudder struggles to keep the lights on, Spartan continues to expand its fitness offerings. Yancy Culp has developed Spartan's newest program debuting in 2020: DEKAFIT. Yancy joins us to talk about what DEKAFIT is, what it is not, and how it is different from the CrossFit Games and Hyrox. One big difference: Anyone off the street can compete in DEKAFIT without having to learn new movements or new motions. Everyone knows how to throw something or push something. No one needs special training to learn how to run a lap on a track. Yancy is excited about removing that barrier to entry that might typically discourage the first-timer from competing. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Spartan sent out a press release on Christmas Eve announcing they have acquired an option to purchase the majority of Tough Mudder's international operations. The press release is below. As of December 26th, there has been no actual transaction between Tough Mudder and Spartan Race. We reached out to Spartan and Tough Mudder for more information on this possible transaction. Tough Mudder was unavailable for comment. Joe De Sena joined us to talk about how the option purchase came to be and how the relationship between himself and Will Dean, the co-founder of Tough Mudder has changed over the years. Will Spartan buy Tough Mudder? Would that be good or bad for Obstacle Course Racing? Let us know what you think in a review on Apple Podcasts. --- Spartan Race announced the acquisition of an exclusive option to acquire Tough Mudder's UK, Canadian, and German events today, as the first step in an effort to bring together a complete merger of the two obstacle course race leaders. Tough Mudder events in those countries would continue to be operated by the same team and under the same brand, to be a part of the larger Spartan family of brands and events. Tough Mudder associates and participants in the UK, Germany and Canada will be able to continue on with their Tough Mudder adventure. “This is a goal we've had for some time,” said Joe De Sena, Spartan founder & CEO. “Tough Mudder UK, Canada & Germany bring a unique experience and putting the success of the two together strengthens our global mission of getting 100 million people off the couch.” Under Spartan ownership, Tough Mudder UK, Canada and Germany races and events would focus on teamwork-based non-competitive festival events, leaving the competition to the Spartan side of the business. “I look forward to creating a lasting partnership with Will and Guy as we seek to complete the merger,” De Sena said. “I'm excited about the prospect of what we can do together, as one team." Spartan will continue to work with Tough Mudder's founders, Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, in efforts to complete the acquisition and renewal of Tough Mudder's US-based events and operations in the coming days. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Nicole Mericle is your 2019 Spartan Race World Champion. This is Nicole's first world championship. Nicole and Lindsay Webster have been going back and forth all year in the Spartan US Championship Series and at the Spartan North American Championship. Nicole and Lindsay are clearly the top two women in Spartan Racing right now. Lindsay has won most of their head-to-head matchups this year, but in the race that mattered most, Nicole Mericle stepped on the gas and won by nearly 16 minutes. Nicole's win at the Spartan World Championship this weekend was one of the most dominant World Championship performances we've ever seen, male or female. Her world championship places her alongside other past world champions including Lindsay Webster, Zuzana Cucomova, and Amelia Boone. We talk about how she was scared in the starting chute at Tahoe, why she comes out of the gate so fast at every race, and what her plans are for the Spartan Race Million Dollar Challenge. Johnny Luna-Lima had the race of his life this weekend at Spartan Big Bear. He beat Ryan Atkins and the field for his first win of the 2019 Spartan US Series Championship and his first podium at a US Spartan Race ever. With his second-place finish Ryan Atkins has all but guaranteed he will win the 2019 Spartan US Championship when the final points are totaled after the upcoming final race in the series. On the women's side Lindsay Webster held off Rea Kolbl and Nicole Mericle for the win and moved into sole possession of first-place in the US series. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have won every race in the 2019 US Series Championship. With her third-place finish Nicole Mericle finds herself 24 points behind Lindsay Webster. Although she is technically behind Webster, due to the point structure of the US Series, she will be able to pass Webster in Utah for the series win as long as she does two things: 1) Finish no worse than 4th. 2) Finish ahead of Webster To state it simply: If Nicole Mericle can beat Lindsay Webster in Utah, she will become the first woman not named Lindsay Webster to win the Spartan US Championship Series. Lindsay Webster has won the series every year since it's inception in 2016. If Lindsay Webster beats Nicole Mericle in Utah she will defend her title and become the four-time defending champion of the Spartan US Championship Series. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! This weekend is the fourth of the five races in the Spartan US Championship Series. Jack Bauer and Will Hicks discuss the standings and who they expect to win the race this weekend in Big Bear. Three men have risen to the top of the field in the series points race. Ryan Atkins, Ryan Kempson, and Ryan Kent all need to win Big Bear or at least place high to remain in the hunt. On the women's side it has become a two-person race. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have separated themselves from the field and are both positioned to take the series win with two more strong races. However, the Big Bear venue seems to be tailor-made to fit the strengths of Rea Kolbl. This will be a great weekend of racing in Big Bear. We wrap up the episode with another chat with Jack about upcoming races. Amelia Boone and Kris Mendoza join us to talk about the recent announcement that Tough Mudder will no longer offer prize money to top finishers at World's Toughest Mudder and their other races. Amelia Boone is a Spartan Race world champion and a three-time champion of World's Toughest Mudder. She has been a part of the OCR community since running in the very first WTM in 2011. With her TV commercials, magazine covers, and endorsement deals she is the most high-profile athlete, man or woman, in Obstacle Course Racing. Kris Mendoza is the 2018 champion of World's Toughest Mudder. He won the closest race in WTM history by passing 2016 champion Trevor Cichosz with less than one mile to go in the race. Mendoza finished the race with 100 miles, his second time breaking the 100-mile mark at World's Toughest Mudder. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Tough Mudder announced they will eliminate all cash prizes for all their race brands in 2019. This includes TMX, Tougher Mudder, Toughest Mudder, and World's Toughest Mudder. We talked with two-time women's champion Rea Kolbl to see what she thought of the decision and if she would defend her title as women's champion at World's Toughest Mudder. Rea WILL NOT race World's Toughest Mudder this year. She gave us her reasons and talked about what OCR races and non-OCR races she will run this year. We also held a panel discussion with Will Hicks, Heather Bode, and Katelyn Ritter about Tough Mudder tightening the purse strings. There was agreement that this is bad for the elite side of the sport but there are possible silver linings for those that are not full-time professional athletes. They also made a few guesses about how this decision may play out over the next several months. What do you think about Tough Mudder removing prize money? Let us know in a review on Apple Podcasts. Jack Bauer joins Will Hicks to discuss the men's field for the 2019 Spartan season. Topics include the first race of the year in Socal, the US Championship Series and the point structure for 2019 and the 2019 Spartan Race World Championship at Lake Tahoe, California. Jack says the top men to watch this year in the Spartan US Series are Ryan Woods, Ryan Atkins, and Robert Killian. When Championship season starts, he says you can be sure to add Jon Albon to that mix. Jack also talks about some new names to keep an eye on and breaks down exactly how much money Ryan Atkins would have lost last year if the 2019 US Series point system was used in 2018. Jack Bauer joins Will Hicks again to discuss the women's field for the 2019 Spartan season. Last year there were five women who dominated the Spartan US Series. Jack says this year there will be six women fighting for the podium each week. The six women to watch this year are Lindsay Webster, Faye Stenning, Rea Kolbl, Alyssa Hawley, Nicole Mericle, and newcomer Rebecca Hammond. Jack also talks about the dominance of Lindsay Webster. Jack says Lindsay will be a heavy favorite going into every race she enters this year. Do you want to help mold The OCR Report Podcast? Listen to the end of the episode. This week, I invited Matt B. Davis of Obstacle Racing Media, Josh Chace of the New England Spahtens podcast, and Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast on the show for a round table discussion about a whole host of OCR topics. We start by talking about Spartan's addition of age group podiums: what Spartan's goal was, whether or not they acheived it, and how they affected the competitive field. That leads us to discuss the addition of numerous race series within Spartan, and their championship series. We move on to talk about Tough Mudder's Tougher series, and then we talk about the two-loop format Tough Mudder tried this year (and why it failed). That leads us into a discussion about the breakneck speed with which companies are adding race formats and making changes. We talk about the Spartan trail race series, and speculate on whether or not it will be successful in 2019. We also have a quick talk about the festival areas and where or not they're getting better, and why that's important. Amidst unrelated banter, we then talk about OCR-related TV shows, and what they do or don't do for OCR. We then go off on another tangent about podcasts and which ones we listen to, complete with plenty more banter. We end our discussion by stating our goals for next year, both with podcasting and racing.
The last event of the weekend of World's Toughest Mudder is called "The Bar Crawl". It's not called that because people crawl from bar to bar though. It's called the Bar Crawl because everyone is so sore, they have to crawl to get to the bar. Or at least that's the story we heard from our first guest this episode. We are joined by six guests we talked to at the bar crawl the night after World's Toughest Mudder 2018. J.D. Allen is an Atlanta local and veteran of multiple World's Toughest Mudders. He shares his thoughts on this years version of the race. Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter are the hosts of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast. Mike ran WTM for the first time this year and Katelyn pitted him all the way to 50 miles. Chris Wilkins and John Cheek came all the way from the UK to run World's Toughest Mudder. They have advice for international runners thinking about making the trip. Kenny Rotter ran 40 miles in the bitter cold this year and ran into Will Hicks multiple times over the weekend. He talks about how to take the Tough Mudder spirit into "real life" off the course. 0:00 Intro and Welcome 3:40 Spartan Ultra Championship Update 9:24 Jon Albon DNF Iceland 10:46 Ryan Atkins wins Iceland; Men's Podium 13:29 Morgan Mckay update 14:23 Hey kids. Mike Stefano joins us to talk about his experience with Alex Youngworth at World’s Toughest 2017. Mike pitted for Alex and did a mini-interview with Alex every time Alex finished a lap.
