Today I had the pleasure of discussing how to live a mindful life with mindfulness teacher, Ted Meissner. About Ted: a meditator since the early 90's, is a UMass Center for Mindfulness Certified MBSR Teacher, and is the host of the podcast Present Moment: Mindfulness Practice and Science and the new video podcast Mindfulness Voyage. He has presented about mindfulness to various groups including Apple, UnitedHealth, Optum, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the National Black Nurses Association, and others. Ted has been published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, Mindful, and The International Journal of Whole Person Care, and is a peer reviewer of articles for the science journal Mindfulness. He supervises mindfulness teachers internationally with the Institute for Mindfulness-Based Approaches based in Germany, serves on the board of trustees for The Mindfulness Network in the U.K., has held master classes for the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation, and teaches various mindfulness and burnout courses live online.
Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Elliot Cohen, author of The Psychologisation of Eastern Spiritual Traditions: Colonisation, Translation and Commodification. This essential book critically examines the various ways in which Eastern spiritual traditions have been typically stripped of their spiritual roots, content, and context, to be more readily assimilated into secular Western frames of Psychology. Dr. Elliot Cohen is a Chartered Psychologist and Senior Lecturer in Social and Interdisciplinary Psychology at Leeds Beckett University, UK. He worked as a Psychotherapist for several years and then worked in Psychiatric units and therapeutic communities in and around Manchester; specializing in Psychodrama, Dramatherapy, Music Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapies. He is the current Secretary of the British Psychological Society's Transpersonal Section and an active member of the Discourse Unit, which promotes more critical/radical approaches to Psychology. Elliott has traveled extensively around the Far East where he studied Daoist, Buddhist, and Hindu philosophy. He is an authorized teacher of Buddhist meditation and Mindfulness-Based Approaches from the Dhamma Nikethanaya Buddhist Academy. MINDFUL LOOKING Practice: A short (17 min) practice, part of the Official 8 week MBSR Online Course with Una Keeley. (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Suitable for a short mindful break at Work or at Home. Sometimes, when we are faced with a stressful event, we may not be able to change the context or the contents that are present in the event. This can trigger a stressful reaction in us. What we can change, however, is our perception. When we do this, it can literally shift our relationship to what is happening. Mindful looking is a practice, which helps us to see more of what is directly in-front of us. It helps us to become aware of the details, to stay with what is in-front of us, and to bring this into clearer sharper view. This ability to increase our awareness, in turn, gives us more information to work with.
