Dr. Karen Sheffield-Abdullah is an Assistant Professor UNC Chapel Hill, a Certified Nurse-Midwife, Mindfulness Instructor, a wife, mother of four and a plant lover. She describes herself as a stress and anxiety researcher who is passionate about perinatal mental health and the impact on pregnancy outcomes specifically in black and brown women. Dr. Karen is trying to get answers on why, despite decades of research, the black and brown communities have twice the rate of preterm birth and higher rates of death compared to white women. Using her depth of knowledge, experience and education, Dr. Karen is an advocate for birth equity, mental health awareness and mindfulness. In our ongoing conversation, Dr. Karen begins by elaborating on the differences between culturally competent care and culturally humble care. She discusses the unique stressors to the black and brown communities, and talks about the importance of providing stress screeners with the understanding that they are meant to be a jumping off point to deeper conversations. Healthcare workers need to be comfortable with having the conversations. Dr. Karen describes it as, “getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.” Healthcare providers need to begin to normalize having deeper conversations with clients. We talk about the importance of midwives, the passing of a certain piece of legislation benefiting her research, and incorporating stress management into models of women's health care for beneficial outcomes. The importance of starting difficult conversations from a humble place.  Normalizing mental health in black women during pregnancy.  What is the Midwives for Moms Act? Diversifying the nurse midwifery workforce is essential to improve outcomes.  Why it's important to bring more diversity into the health care system. Stress and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in black women. How do we make it such that when we bring in examples of stress, when we talk about suffering, that it is through a culturally relevant lens? Black women's pain is notoriously under assessed and under-addressed. The importance of self-reflecting when taking care of this community. The ways her background in midwifery has shaped her view of the healthcare system and her professional goals. When was the last time you experienced awe? And what's it got to do with anxiety? Hmmm, it can be a tricky one because we typically think awe comes from big moments, like seeing the Eiffel Tower, visiting the Grand Canyon, visiting Uluru or swimming with Whale Sharks. While each of those experiences is bound to elicit awe, we can actually experience awe in everyday moments, inside our homes or workplaces and outside in nature. In this episode Jake Eagle, Psychotherapist and co-author of The Power of Awe explains the powerful role of awe in reducing anxiety quickly, where we can find awe in everyday moments and how to use the A.W.E. strategy to elicit the greatest benefit from these moments. The Power of Awe is available for sale on Amazon. To learn more, go to https://thepowerofawe.comInstagram - @thepowerofawebookFacebook - The Power of AWETwitter - @ThePowerofAWETikTok - thepowerofaweThanks for listening to this episode of “Well, hello anxiety with Dr Jodi Richardson.”How you can help: If you enjoyed this episode, or gained some useful insight from it, please share it with a friend or family member. With the holidays upon us, I wanted to do an episode on how to make the most of them. To optimize our presence, we need to be mindful. Therefore, I knew the best episode this week was with mindfulness expert Claudio Barrientos. Listen to today's episode to learn more about how to bring mindfulness into your own life to make the most of the holidays. In addition, I do have a guide about how to make the most of the holidays: 1. Check out this resource: https://drcarolinebuzanko.com/holidayguide/ 2. Listen in on my other podcast, Parents of the Year, where my husband and I talk about making the most of the holidays as a family. https://apple.co/3du8mPK About Claudio Barrientos: Claudio was raised in Spain and Connecticut. He is an avid traveller with an endless curiosity of people, culture, food, philosophy, and psychology. He received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy & Theology from University of San Francisco, and his master's degree in Social Work from the University of Texas San Antonio. Currently, Claudio is a Licensed Master Social Worker. As a therapist, Claudio's approach is informed by both his personal practice of mindfulness meditation and his desire to make mindfulness relatable to anyone seeking relief from the daily stressors of life. Claudio's path in the helping profession began in 2010 when he became a certified Mindfulness Instructor. Since that time, he has been on a mission to integrate his education in mindfulness with therapeutic interventions such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Claudio has worked with adolescents and adults in a DBT Intensive Outpatient Program, provided mental health services in Spanish to unaccompanied minors in the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and taught mindfulness to thousands of people across boardrooms, classrooms, and the general public.

Today's episode may not be for you, because today we're going to approach the topic of corporate wellness. But, wait. Before you move on to another episode, I want to make you a promise. If you give our guest a few moments, he will likely teach you something that you can apply in your own life. I mean, look, here's the thing. You can't have corporate wellness without healthy people. And health is not just about your physical fitness. At the end of the day, you simply can't be fully present at work or fully available to your coworkers without some patience, and self-awareness, and a non-judgmental attitude. Basically, regardless of the macro view, whether we're talking globally, locally, or on your team, if we aren't okay with what's inside of us, we're not going to be able to add value elsewhere. So, How can we practice being a mindful/conscious leader? And, what exactly is the connection between mindfulness, emotional intelligence and our interpersonal relationships? We will approach these topics in our episode today with our special guest, Mindfulness Instructor, Luis Gil.Luis is a mindfulness instructor with over a decade of experience practicing and teaching at centers and organizations all over North America. his episode is all about music. Have you ever felt anxious and put on your favorite calming song? Or perhaps sad and delved into a heartfelt playlist? I would guess most of us use music to fuel our tough workouts! My guest on this episode Ryan Judd is an internationally known music therapist who uses the power of song with children - mainly in the school setting. Research shows music produces Oxytocin in the brain which is the hormone associated with social bonding, a very important skill to learn as a child. Listening isn't the only part that is beneficial, but playing music can help children bond further and release any emotions through sensory play. The topics we cover in this episode are:How Ryan found Music TherapyWhat music therapy looks like in a school settingHow powerful it is to work in a groupSinging produces Oxytocin in the brainThe bonding experience of singing with othersMusic and anxiety - are there any links? The sensory side of playing musicHow Ryan likes to rest and recharge Being present with your childrenAbout The Guest - Ryan JuddRyan lives in Exeter, New Hampshire with his wife and their two young boys. Season 3 Bonus  -  This guided meditation is for anyone seeking to explore the nature of their mortality. It is a profound practice that under the normal circumstances of everyday life – we rarely examine with mindful awareness.Whenever we contemplate our mortality, many big and strong emotions may arise in the process of this exploration. My encouragement is that if you decide to practice this guided meditation, please do so in a safe space where such emotions can be held, nurtured, and explored.  As you will hear from the Geeta, we are asked to reflect what would be on our bucket list if we knew we had one year to live. We are then gently and lovingly asked to contemplate this very bucket list as the time of mortality shortens from one year to six months, to one month,    to one week, to one day, to one hour, to one minute, and finally to one breath.I want to thank Geeta because this guided meditation is one of those rare experiences where we get to make sense of what really, really, really matters to us.-- Our special guest, Geeta Cowlagi, helps us create the conditions to make contact with this body, mind, and heart from a place of safety and abundance. We explore how through the act of simply releasing and softening the body, we can begin to release and soften the heart against what Geeta refers to as the “ouches” of our lives.   As she points out, we humans can carry these “ouches” in the form of physical pain through tension in the body - or emotional pain through the stories or narratives we tell ourselves. And in this guided meditation, we explore, we feel, we make contact with what it would be like in this mind/body system to gently and patiently lay down our defenses against the ‘ouch' and to soften and release in the face of the ‘ouch.” The moment we practice doing this is a moment of kindness and compassion toward ourselves. Thank you, Geeta, for this lovely meditation. --We would love to hear from you! - What would you like to know about mindfulness or how it can help you with the issues you are facing? Turning Points with Sean and Corrine

As a child Kathy was different and could feel energy but it wasn't until she became an oncology nurse and took a Healing Touch workshop that she understood what it was. From there she was drawn to learn meditation because that was how she was able to feel the energy she experienced in the workshop. After some inner struggles Kathy feels that her meditation practice has brought her closer to her connection to her own Christian religious beliefs. Yet that realization has taken time and has been a theme for most of her life, finding her tribe. You wouldn't know that Kathy has had many challenges in her life as that is just not the way she looks at it. When life is hard or she is faced with a challenge, she asks God/the Universe for help and direction and it always comes. Through life's challenges, Kathy always knows everything is going to be okay.IG: @peakerelief Twitter: @KattRNLMTFB: Kathy.Peake.18 Founder at Peake Relief, Holistic Health Practitioner at Integrative Solutions For Health Holistic Nurse Consultant. But it can't tell you if you aren't familiar with the language it uses. The Language of the Soul is your key to unlocking your creativity and with it a sense of fulfillment. Each of the letters of the alphabet in this book conveys a key aspect of the soul's language. Put together as they are here, they will help you translate what your soul is trying to say to you so that you access the GPS within you. As you learn to pay attention to your GPS, it will give you a real-time roadmap of your life. Linking your past to your present is how you will discover what your soul is trying to tell you. Many of us tell ourselves that if something is in the past, it's over and done with. But is it? Mindfulness from A to Z: 26 Mindful Tools to Feel Focused, Kind & Calm Give your child the life-changing benefits of Mindfulness. Learn what they don't teach at school! Mindfulness is about creating awareness and, consequently, increasing self-confidence, improving health and body image, lowering stress, and improving children's overall emotional well-being. Practicing mindfulness gives your child the ability to regulate their emotions to effectively manage their moods in a healthy and productive way. It's a superpower that we all possess; we just need to keep our batteries charged. Learning what they don't teach at school gives your child improved communication skills for better decisions and create happier futures. Mindfulness is the Language of the Soul. Each letter of the alphabet has been transformed into easy, thought-provoking, and life-changing mindfulness practices. As your child dives deeper into the practices, they will activate their creativity and intuition to become resilient, confident beings. The positive effects of a career change: Episode Notes Thinking about a career change can be scary and stressful. Rebecca O'Brien joins Stepsero to share her own journey from Marketing & Sales to Wellness Coaching. Following a debilitating burnout, Rebecca made the brave choice to go back to study and finally embrace what she felt was her real purpose in life. As a first step, rather than pursuing what was expected of her and keep climbing the corporate ladder, she set out to follow different therapies including breathwork, CBT therapy and trauma healing, among others. Below are a few takeaways from our discussion: As scary as it may sound, a career change may lead to a healthier and happier future. For these to be successful, we should avoid pushing our emotions away, but rather listen to our inner voice.Hitting rock bottom may sometimes be necessary for us to realize that we need to follow a new path. Thanks to her painful experience, Rebecca was able to re-evaluate many important aspects of her life, including some of her previous relationships.Wellness by Rebecca is based on four core principles, namely Self-mastery, Powerful Mind, High-performing habits, and Unbreakable Boundaries. Our own well-being starts with us and requires a significant amount of inner work. This includes setting healthy choices for our body, mind and spirit, and building a sustainable foundation for ourselves. Our Guest: Rebecca O'Brien Rebecca O'Brien is a Certified Stress Management & Burnout Prevention Coach, Mindfulness Instructor, Nutritionist, and former Sales & Marketing Executive. She is the Founder and CEO of Wellness by Rebecca, which is posed to help IT professionals through private coaching and corporate programs.Rebecca She splits her time between San Francisco and Stockholm and uses techniques from both cultures with her clients.
