Alison shares her Paris adventures (yes, including some rodent encounters), Dean dishes on their exciting new ventures with Prairie Legacy Productions, and Pamela goes on a rant against possums (apologies to the possum lovers out there). But then—on to the main event! We're recapping another standout episode from Season 1: “School Mom”. Caroline Ingalls steps in as the earthy and compassionate substitute teacher, helping a student in need named Able. And we ask the most important question:Why does Able look like he's 42 years old?Able was played by Dirk Blocker, the son of Bonanza legend Dan Blocker and the best friend and mentor of Michael Landon, and shockingly, was only 17 when the episode was filmed. After his father, Dan's passing, Michael Landon brought Dirk into the Little House family to honor his dad's legacy—and wow, did he deliver.Alison and Dean also reveal a shocking tidbit about Miss Beadle's stunt double (you won't believe it!) and ask the pressing question: where does Miss Beadle actually live?Pa steps up in peak “Chesty Charles” fashion, cooking dinner for Caroline after her long day of teaching (ladies, we all know how hot that is—gentlemen, take notes). We also dive into how the relationship between Karen Grassle and Michael Landon shifted over time, leading to Karen's role being gradually diminished. Alison opens up about how this impacted her and the rest of the cast—and how Karen still showed up, always delivering powerful, heartfelt performances. And of course, no Little House episode recap is complete without calling out the real villains of the Prairie: the school children. Seriously, Walnut Grove, do better! Honestly, the level of petty in that classroom (including Mrs. Oleson) is chef's kiss terrible. This Ma-centric episode is a beautiful example of empathy, compassion, and patience. It tugs at every heartstring and proves once again why Caroline Ingalls remains the #1 mom of all time. Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon where Alison and Dean will spill the beans about Prairie Legacy Productions, and what's in store for 2025!Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Kelly Mielke and I decided to discuss this heartwarming and unforgettable episode while also doing a crossover with our other podcast, LandonNation! We break down this amazing episode and I hope you enjoy it! “Ingalls and his employer Mr. Hansen are anticipating a large income from a big job they have done. The Ingalls plan to pay their bill at the Mercantile store and more. Unfortunately, when Mr. Hansen learns that his client cannot pay, that means he cannot pay Mr. Ingalls and has to close his mill. With the bonus income lost, and the lack of regular income, the family has to think how they will pay their debts and keep up their other duties. Mr. Ingalls works for the livery owner, grooming and caring for the horses he owns. Once done there, he works for a local farmer to fix an irrigation system on his property. But, the women of the family want to help, too. Caroline and Laura plant a double crop of vegetables for the winter and plan to sell the eggs as they have been collecting. Mary plans to leave school temporarily to work for Mrs. Whipple, the seamstress, sewing assorted clothing items for ladies of the community. Laura continues in school, bringing home lessons to Mary so she doesn’t get behind on her schoolwork. When she herself gets behind on turning in her homework, she tells Miss Beadle she ran out of tablet paper and doesn’t want to ask her father to buy it. Miss Beadle offers a solution to the problem and all is much better.” The Richest Man in Walnut Grove originally aired on September 10, 1975 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Cori Rice joins me to discuss this sometimes romantic and sometimes hilarious episode of Little House! “Adam and Luke Simms arrive in Walnut Grove, where Luke quickly falls for Nellie Oleson despite his unconventional appearance—barefoot and in overalls over long underwear—which horrifies Nellie's mother, Harriet, who forbids their relationship. Meanwhile, Luke enlists Mary's help to pick out a ring for Nellie's birthday, but a misunderstanding leads Nellie to believe he's toying with her feelings, prompting her to complain to Miss Beadle, who then confronts Adam Simms and unexpectedly begins to fall for him. As tensions rise, Luke and Nellie decide to elope, marrying and heading to a hotel, only to be tracked down by Harriet, Nels, Adam, and Miss Beadle, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation. Alongside this, a budding romance blossoms between Miss Beadle and Adam, adding a tender counterpoint to the youthful impulsiveness of Luke and Nellie's union.” Here Come the Brides originally aired on December 5, 1977 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Maryann returns to the podcast to discuss this amazing episode! We dive into a ton of things and I hope you enjoy it! “When teacher, Miss Beadle, is deemed unable to control some of the rowdy, older boys in her class, Mrs. Oleson convinces the Walnut Grove school board to replace her with a firmer, male hand. But the new schoolmaster tries to bully his students into submission and singles little Laura out as a troublemaker, blaming and punishing her for the slightest infraction even when she isn’t the one responsible.” Troublemaker originally aired on February 25, 1976 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. What starts off as a simple frogging expedition one afternoon turns into the moment when Laura starts to feel she is ready to kiss a boy.  She's had feelings for boys in the pass, but this is the first time she is ready to try out kissing.   In fact she is so interested in kissing, not only does she practice with the mirror up in the loft, she also manages to inquire to Big Sister Mary about the whole experience.  In addition she seeks the counseling of someone who was recently married: Nellie Oleson. If that wasn't enough, Laura now feels there is some completion for her  potential beau when a new kid shows up at school, showing off all the traits that Laura is now trying to conceal. And when Laura tries to take matters into he own hands, gravity proves that somethings you can't rush.  Meanwhile, Charles and Jonathan Garvey have won a freighting competition and the award is a contract job.  This job keeps these family men away from home longer than either of them want to be. And they soon realizing that money doesn't always make you happy...in fact it's sort of making them miserable. Did Doc Baker properly set Charles' broken foot before putting a cast on it? How come Mrs. Simms was on screen and nobody called her Mrs. Simms....or even Miss Beadle for that matter? Caroline has spent plenty of time at the little house with Charles gone on long stretches, Why is this time different for her?

Walnut Grove is the new home of Father and Son duo: Adam and Luke Simms. One his first day of school Luke meets Nellie Oleson whom is immediately smitten with the young man. Not only that but her usual solution of getting people to like her, bribery via candy, is not going to work forcing Nellie to step outside of her comfort zone. Speaking of comfort zones, Harriet Oleson is also out of hers when she finds out her daughter is in love with the son of a Pig Farmer. Miss Beadle doesn't seem to mind the pig farmer occupation, in fact she finds any reason/excuse to head to the Simms farm to talk with Adam. And like father, like son, these men end up with a woman by their side. While Miss Beaddle is reluctant to accept the marriage proposal that was offered to her, Nellie and Luke....sell a sow, steal a buckboard and elope to Sleepy eye to find the nearest Justice of the Peace and get married. Needless to say Harriet with the Shotgun (the widow maker) along with Mr. Oleson, Miss Beadle, and Mr Simms head to Sleepy Eye. And while one marriage is dissolved, after a bit of hilarity, a second wedding takes place. Is anyone disappointed we didn't see more of the Ingalllas in the is episode? With the parents away in Sleepy Eye, what sort of hijinks did Willie get into at the Mercantile? How did we get to the beginning of summer with no mention of winter taking place?

It's time to find your marks, have your lines memorized and let the show begin. The student body at Walnut Grove are getting ready to do their very first plays. What an experience it's going to be for everyone. But mostly for little Ginny Clarke, who is elated to not only have her suggestion for a play accepted but she is also invited to go the the Oleson's parlor for rehearsals. Mary and Laura...not so excited. Ginny can't wait to share the news with Harold Mayfield, a local widower who happens to see what a giving person Ginny is, and Ginny's mom, who doesn't't seem to have any time in her life for anyone. And that includes Ginny. Mary, Laura, and Ginny must work with first time playwright Mrs. Oleson and first time actress Nellie but it only seems as thought they are audience members. Meanwhile, Willie Oleson and "friends" are working on a scene from Tom Sawyer and using some really amazing props. As the premiere date approaches, Ginny's one wish is that her mom will come to see her debut. And in a moment of life imitating art Ginny makes a bold move to get her and Mr. Mayfield to attend the plays. Why is the Widow Clarke so unfriendly towards everyone? Will the Oleson's get their white picket fence fixed? When do you think Miss Beadle will let the kids try putting on plays again?

It's Christmas Eve in Walnut Grove in the year 187? (who knows) and like most holiday seasons expect cold temperatures, gifts, decorations and libations. Charles and Mr. Edwards are busy playing Santa with miles to go before they sleep. The members of the Women's League are getting things ready for a holiday party. Lastly, the children are at school making gifts for their families. However, the Holiday cheer is gone out the window after Miss Beadle dismisses the students body for the holiday break just as the snow flurries start to deliver more than just a white Christmas....but a white out Blizzard. The Farmer's Almanac didn't predict this one. And it all becomes a race to locate the missing Children. With the men out looking in the blizzard, Doc Baker and the members of the Women's League convert the school, once again, into Walnut Grove General Hospital. The Ingallas Girls (Carrie included) and the Sanderson Siblings (minus John Junior) make their trek home but each step towards home makes you wonder if they are even headed in the right direction. With the heavy snowfall, a low supply of kerosine, day light fleeting and temperatures plummeting will the men of Walnut Grove be able to locate all the missing children? When will Carrie actually get to start school? Is Willie Oleson the first Walnut Grove Foodie?

Meanwhile, Wendall Loudy, an outsider/pirriah resident of Walnut Grove, is trying to turn his life around after a nearly two decade old incident which still has Mr. Hanson fuming. And these two storylines collide to help resolve the issues at hand...and that's what Little House on the Prairie is about, solving problems. When the town brings itself together not only is Carrie the one being rescued but so is Wendall Loudy. Sadly, it takes the help of Carl Sanderson to make it all happen. When the harvest is over, the big kids come back to school and it's a whole different classroom. Their presences has a bad influence on the younger students and the classroom is turning into a riot.  An emergency school board meeting brings things to attention and the decision that the classroom might require a different method of keeping things in order is made. That method being a new Male teacher. Enter Hannibal Applewood, a teacher with a long list of previous classroom experience. And while his new rules to bring order into the classroom are pretty standard, his personality/attitude/character could use some practice.  Unfortunately, Laura is on the receiving end of almost every single punishment that Mr. Applewood is dishing out.  And when writing words on the blackboard isn't enough...she is eventually expelled.  And once again an emergency school board meeting is called to order.   With all this extra writing on the blackboard, Laura's spelling must be improving... what about her understanding of fractions?  Exactly how old is Herman Stone?  Where did Miss Beadle go on her administrative leave?

Little House in the Hollywood Hills is a memoir of working with leading men from Jimmy Stewart and Elvis Presley to Kevin Bacon and Kyle MacLachlan. It also details off-stage friendships such as those with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, as well as with relationships and flings with some of TV, film, and music's biggest names including Jon Voight, Richard Dreyfuss, Victor French, Tim Considine, Bill Murray, and Jim Morrison. Ultimately, Charlotte's story is of a survivor. Six years after her career-making role on Little House on the Prairie she'd lost everything and was living on vodka and hotdogs. Yet through the darkest periods of her life - divorce, drug-use, cancer, financial ruin, the death of a spouse, and alcoholism - she never lost her humanity or sense of humor. She is set to reprise her role of Betty Briggs in the new Twin Peaks series to be seen on Showtime in 2017. Throughout the year, she is a featured celebrity in fan events and festivals for Little House on the Prairie and Twin Peaks both in the U.S. and abroad.

This week, the entire Ingalls family is concerned about Mary. Her grades are suddenly failing, and Pa is the only one smart enough to figure out that she needs glasses. That entire mystery takes most of the episode to solve. After her eyes are opened to a whole new world via glasses, she is immediately terrorized by the Oleson kids who tell her she will never get married now that glasses have turned her into a hideous monster. Mary decides she'd rather fail at school than be a spinster so she hides her glasses. Thankfully, a dopey version of Ryan Gosling swings by to make out with Miss Beadle (who also wears glasses) proving to Mary that maybe the Oleson kids are just mean and have no idea what they are talking about. Amy, Julie, and Marissa delve into subjects like body image, what personal "flaws" plagued us when we were teenagers, and how we learned we finally needed glasses. We also talk about how depressing Planet Earth can be and how washing your face with oil can possibly solve acne issues. Trigger Warning: This episode involves alcoholism and child abuse. This week we explore another dark episode that portrays some troubling social issues: alcoholism and child abuse.  When John Stewart (not that Jon Stewart of Daily Show fame) beats his son into unconsciousness in a drunken rage, the town of Walnut Grove (and especially the Ingalls family) cannot choose to ignore what is happening any longer. Thanks to Miss Beadle, Ma, Pa, and Doc Baker, appropriate measures are taken in order to provide healing to both the father and son. After the future Walnut Grove serial killer causes Miss Beadle to get severely injured in an accident involving some dramatic stunts, the town begs Ma to be the school’s substitute teacher while Miss Beadle recovers. After reluctantly accepting the gig, Ma struggles to win over the students with her athletic prowess and build up the confidence of a giant, balding man-kid so he can read. Meanwhile, Carrie is babysat by the “Nelsons.”  (We all know “Nelsons” is a codename for a family of wolves in the forest. Seriously, no one watches this kid.) This episode is sure to delight with plenty of Mrs. Oleson and Ma battles, average looking clay figurines, and Carolyn’s swiftly changing moods. Marissa and Amy get into a very long tangent on the little we know about the history of public education, Julie delights us with her dramatic gasps throughout, and we see evidence of a town ghost who haunts the church/school. VHSRewind.com Presents: Walnut GroveCast - Episode 14 Here Come the Brides For this episode of Walnut GroveCast I am joined by Susan King! Bare-foot bumpkin Luke Sims and his hunky dad Adam, arrive in Walnut Grove. Adam is a pig farmer, (and according to Willie, “he raises hogs too”…. as will be evident at the Olson’s dinner table when Luke joins them for a meal) Adam and son stop by the schoolhouse so that Luke can get some book learnin’ and have a “women’s touch” in his life. We discover Adam is a widower and Miss Beadle instantaneously has the hots for him. Not knowing her history, Luke takes a shine to Nellie and their relationship progresses. Harriet catches them out late one night and seeks Miss Beadle’s help in stopping their romance as it is effecting Nellie's school work. Miss Beadle protests at first but quickly realizes this is a great opportunity to see hunky Adam again Luke decides to buy Nellie a ring for her birthday, using Mary to assist him, misunderstandings galore occur with Nellie angry telling her mother to “SHUT UP” as she explains to Nellie that “ Luke bought a ring for Mary and men are fickle as weather vanes”. Luke shows up at the door on her birthday with presents in tow and the misunderstanding is cleared up. Luke, Nellie, Adam and Miss Eva Beadle spend time together picnicking, etc. and Adam proposes to Eva. She wants to think about it because of her age and school responsibilities. While pondering Adams proposal, Nellie asks Ms. Beadle about marriage (Age etc.) Miss B thinks she is talking about her, but in reality, she is contemplating Luke’s proposal to her. Both Nellie and Eva decide to wed the Sims men, Eva telling Adam in a sweet moment at his house, Nellie, and Luke grabbing a suitcase, hopping on the Oleson’s buckboard and driving to sleepy-eye to elope. Hilarity ensues as Adam, Ms. Beadle and the Oleson’s (with a rifle in tow) track them down to a hotel. Harriet’s request? “Nels, make her a widow!” They all go back to the JP and Nellie and Luke get “unmarried”. While Adam and Ms. Beadle are there at the JP, they decide to marry….and with the exception of the JP and his wife who have been continuously awoken all night long…they live happily ever after.

Today's Guest: Charlotte Stewart, actress, “Twin Peaks,” “Little House on the Prairie,” Eraserhead, author, Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A Bad Girl's Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary, and Me   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Charlotte Stewart by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of men and women who seem to have been everywhere and with everyone throughout modern history, including Forest Gump, Zelig and Justin Beiber… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! When you pick up a memoir – particularly a celebrity memoir – part of the inherent appeal is that you can safely be a voyeur at arm’s reach. But when that celebrity memoir falls short on sharing names and intimate details, well, that’s not a great read. Because if you just wanted to hear how swell everybody is and how perfect a celebrity’s life is, you could just tune in to “Ellen.” CHARLOTTE STEWART podcast excerpt: "Life became just unbearable for Jim (Morrison, lead singer of The Doors). He was facing three years in jail and all kinds of paparazzi were around. He called me up one day and said, 'I have to get out of town. I want to go away. You want to come?' I said sure. He asked me because he trusted me. We didn't have an affair; we had a friendship. We headed up to Cambria and I introduced Jim to some artist friends of mine who didn't know who Jim was. Jim didn't look like Jim Morrison. We went up to Hearst Castle -- Jim Morrison was riding the Hearst tour bus. Nobody knew him. We were just shooting pool and drinking..." You can LISTEN to this interview with actress CHARLOTTE STEWART, author of LITTLE HOUSE IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS: A Bad Girl's Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary, and Me, by clicking the audio player above! So when I tell you that actress Charlotte Stewart’s autobiography delivers on both boldface names and remarkably personal details, trust me, I’m underselling the book. In Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A Bad Girl’s Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X, and Me, the author tells stories about the friends she made, the roles she played and the men she loved across Hollywood going back more than 50 years. CHARLOTTE STEWART podcast excerpt: "David Lynch is a very sincere person. He is a meditator — he is a joyful person. I’ve never seen David in a bad mood. When I was shooting ’Twin Peaks’ last year, his set was so comfortable… David Lynch paints film; he does a visual thing that is unlike any other director I’ve known. And it works." Like who? Well, she had a long getaway weekend with singer Jim Morrison of The Doors shortly before his fateful final trip to Paris. She was married to actor Tim Considine, one of the sons in the CBS hit comedy “My Three Sons” – although that didn’t keep her from leading a wild life of sex and drugs of which her husband knew nothing. One of the few men she turned down was her boss for four years as she played the reserved schoolmarm Miss Beadle on “Little House on the Prairie.” The boss’s name? Pa Ingalls himself, Michael Landon. A few more names in her life’s story: Elvis Presley. Kevin Bacon. Kyle McLachlan. Neil Young. Joni Mitchell. Jimmy Stewart. CHARLOTTE STEWART podcast excerpt: "I was so lucky in so many ways , but I took it for granted. I'm just glad I got through it." Oh, and she inspired a scene in Tom Wolfe’s novel, The Bonfire of the Vanities. She also co-starred in David Lynch’s breakthrough cult film, Eraserhead, as Mary X. And while she and the director never got together off the set, she did live on and off through the years with Eraserhead himself, Jack Nance. (And Lynch gave her the recurring role of “Betsy Briggs” on his legendary TV show “Twin Peaks,” a role she’ll return to in the show’s third season in early 2017 on Showtime.)
