Understanding Apple's Shift: From MDM to DDM in Device Management with Anil Gupta

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2025 18:20

Dave Sobel welcomes Anil Gupta, co-founder and CTO of Wyebot, to discuss Apple's transition from Mobile Device Management (MDM) to Declarative Device Management (DDM). This shift represents a significant change in how enterprise device management is approached, particularly as organizations increasingly rely on a growing number of Apple devices. Anil explains that the traditional MDM model, which relies on a central server to manage devices, can become a bottleneck as the number of devices increases. DDM, on the other hand, empowers individual devices to make decisions based on the information provided to them, reducing the need for constant communication with a central server.Anil elaborates on the advantages of DDM, including improved scalability and reduced network traffic. By allowing devices to act intelligently and autonomously, organizations can avoid the challenges associated with the traditional MDM approach, such as excessive back-and-forth communication and potential deadlock situations. This new paradigm not only enhances performance but also aligns with the growing trend of edge computing, where devices at the edge of the network can process information and make decisions independently. Anil draws parallels between DDM and WiBot's own approach to Wi-Fi management, emphasizing the importance of empowering devices to operate efficiently. The conversation also delves into the implications of DDM for security, particularly in the context of a zero trust security model. Anil explains that zero trust requires devices to prove their identity before being granted access to the network. This involves a robust chain of trust that begins at the device level and extends through the entire communication process. By utilizing certificates and tokens instead of traditional passwords, organizations can enhance security while still enabling efficient device management. Anil emphasizes that security must remain a top priority, even as scalability and performance improve. Finally, the discussion touches on the role of AI in network automation and how it can complement DDM advancements. Anil highlights the challenges faced by organizations with distributed enterprises, where managing Wi-Fi across numerous locations can be daunting. By leveraging AI-driven automation, companies can simplify the deployment and management of Wi-Fi networks, making it easier for non-experts to troubleshoot and maintain connectivity. Anil concludes by inviting listeners to learn more about WiBot's solutions, which aim to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience in managing Wi-Fi networks. IT Experts Podcast with Ian Luckett
EP217 - Grow your MSP with Apple…Or Get Left Behind with Ben Greiner & Ian Luckett

IT Experts Podcast with Ian Luckett

We began by addressing a common stigma: why so many MSPs avoid Apple devices despite their undeniable popularity and premium quality. Ben highlighted that while many MSPs are deeply rooted in the Microsoft ecosystem—largely due to its strong channel support and financial incentives—Apple has been quietly making significant inroads into the business world. In fact, as Ben pointed out, companies like IBM and Cisco have embraced Apple devices, with up to 60% of their employees choosing Apple when given the option. This trend is a clear indication that Apple is no longer just for creatives or niche markets; it's becoming a mainstream choice for professionals across industries.  One of the key takeaways from Ben's insights is that MSPs need to shift their mindset. Supporting Apple isn't just about ticking a box; it's a cultural shift. Apple devices require a different approach, both technically and operationally. Unlike the Windows ecosystem, where tools like Active Directory dominate, Apple relies on solutions like Apple Business Manager and Mobile Device Management (MDM) platforms. Ben emphasised that tools like Addigy, which he represents, are purpose-built for managing Apple devices and can provide MSPs with the support and guidance needed to navigate this shift.  We also discussed the perception that Apple devices are “too expensive.” Ben countered this by sharing compelling data from his experiences and from industry leaders like Fletcher Previn, formerly of IBM. While Apple devices may have a higher upfront cost, their long-term value—including durability, user satisfaction, and reduced downtime—makes them a sound investment. For MSPs, this is an opportunity to educate clients on the total cost of ownership and the enhanced experience Apple can deliver.  Ben also addressed the hesitancy some MSPs feel when considering Apple. He acknowledged that Apple's lack of engagement with the channel has made it harder for MSPs to feel confident about diving into the Apple ecosystem. However, he sees this as an opportunity rather than a limitation. By committing to building expertise with Apple, MSPs can differentiate themselves in the market, offering a premium service that competitors might shy away from. For those just starting, Ben suggested partnering with Apple-focused providers or leveraging resources like Addigy's MSP programmes to gain confidence and expertise.  One of the most thought-provoking parts of our conversation was the long-term outlook. Ben painted a vivid picture of a future where Apple devices could become just as prevalent in the workplace as Windows machines. MSPs who take the time to embrace Apple now will be well-positioned to capitalise on this shift, while those who ignore it may find themselves playing catch-up. He also noted that the demand for Apple in business environments is often hidden; many MSPs underestimate the number of Apple devices already in their clients' ecosystems. A simple inventory check or conversation with clients could reveal untapped opportunities.  Security and compliance were another critical topic. Ben reminded us that ignoring Apple devices isn't just a missed business opportunity; it's a potential liability. In today's world, where security threats don't discriminate by platform, ensuring all devices in an organisation—Apple included—are properly managed and secured is non-negotiable. Clients expect comprehensive protection, and failing to address Apple devices could lead to reputational and operational risks.  To wrap up, Ben shared his advice for MSPs ready to take the leap into the Apple ecosystem. Start small, build confidence, and don't be afraid to partner with experts. He also stressed the importance of playing the long game. Building an Apple practice isn't about making quick gains; it's about creating a sustainable pipeline of opportunities that will pay dividends in the years to come.  This episode was packed with actionable insights, and Ben Greiner's expertise on Apple was eye-opening. Whether you're an MSP owner curious about Apple or someone who's been hesitant to dive into the ecosystem, this conversation is a must-listen. A faulty software update from CrowdStrike caused widespread outages, resulting in "blue screens of death" (BSOD) for Windows users globally. This incident impacted sectors such as airlines, hospitals, and banks, highlighting the dependency on technological infrastructure. Reid Christian from CRV clarified that the issue was a failure in software testing and deployment, not cybersecurity. CRV supports Fleet, a startup monitoring vendor instances on endpoints. The problem involved a faulty Windows kernel-level driver, even affecting companies with additional Mobile Device Management (MDM) software. Christian stressed the need for more oversight and auxiliary vendors. Zach Wasserman from Fleet noted their software operates outside the kernel, minimizing risks. Guru Chahal from Lightspeed Venture Partners suggested non-invasive cybersecurity solutions might gain popularity. Oligo Security uses sandboxing methods to avoid kernel access. Wiz, a company currently in acquisition talks with Google, exemplifies pressure on cybersecurity firms to ensure robust strategies. Fin Capital's Logan Allin mentioned increased demand for cloud observability companies due to AI integration. The incident revealed outdated infrastructure in finance and healthcare, prompting future security solutions to avoid deep system integration while maintaining protection.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. We know your location, see your pictures, listen in on your microphone, and even get into your encrypted chat. But we only use that for good! (Okay, except for that one time...) Are we fighting fire with fire or becoming the very thing we defend against? Israeli based cyber intelligence company NSO Group is a billion-dollar business that helps law enforcement agencies and governments learn everything about innocent and guilty citizens alike in the name of protecting the virtuous. Cyber weapons like Pegasus represent a moral tradeoff. The intended use is to curb human trafficking or intervene before violent crimes are committed, but it comes at the cost of invading the privacy of good-doing citizens. We're quick to accept this risk when weapons are wielded by the armed forces that defend countries, but the NSO Group is motivated by profits as much as any other private company. What we called spyware in the 90s has become the way modern advertising works, and that lets platform holders more finely target the spaghetti they throw at the wall. Now it's angel hair pasta, and everything is sticking. The ethics of doing business today are directly tied to the ethics of cybersecurity. As Nate discusses in the episode, he often finds himself caught between the creative ambition of an artist and catering to what will sell. To pay the bills, Nate has to sacrifice a bit of creative freedom. When companies profit from circumventing the security systems that keep us safe, it's a much greater sacrifice. This is not a new challenge, but privacy has entered a new frontier of technological reliance. In this episode, we discuss zero day vulnerabilities, Pegasus Spyware, NSO Group, Edward Snowden, Spysweeper, Privacy concerns, mobile security, law enforcement, wardriving, and WIFI security.
