For this bonus episode, Emilio, Madeline, and Julian power up a communicator and call on the presence of Mike Duquette, an out-of-this-world pop culture writer based in Astoria, NY, to discuss Steven Spielberg's evergreen classic 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'.  Mike brings his encyclopedic knowledge of all things 'E.T.' for a panoramic look at the film and its legacy.  The group covers the film's personal and inauspicious origins, its unusual (at the time of its release) foregrounding of children and childhood, the best-selling film novelization (and its authorized sequel?!), its status as a rare box-office behemoth that's also a stand alone movie, the Oscar-winning score by John Williams, and the little details that make 'E.T.' a film for the ages.   Mike Duquette has worked for Legacy Recordings, Rhino Records, Allmusic, Ultimate Classic Rock, Discogs, Observer, uDiscover Music and Mondo Records, where he penned the liner notes to their 40th anniversary vinyl release of John Williams' score to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. He founded The Second Disc, a website devoted to music reissues and box sets, in 2010, and writes about other music, movies and film novelizations at Duque's Delight. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? Today I reach across the pond to talk to JODA, essentially a supergroup (superduo?) of Jono Grant — 1/3 of Above & Beyond — and Darren Tate — film composer, and producer under the name DT8 among others. They're also both label heads, Jono of Anjunabeats and Darren of Mondo Records. JODA is their side project born out of the pandemic. Maybe a bit of restlessness from not being able to tour, and maybe tapping into the collective energy that led so many of us to feel like it's time to try something different. The record blends modern electronic production with 80s synthwave sounds, courtesy of the guys' extensive and growing collection of analog synthesizers. We talk a lot about collaboration. How they were able to give each other space to experiment and also keep the project moving forward. And about how the tools of the trade (analog synths in this case) influence the output of the final product. Dig in and then check out the JODA album here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5KS3RbR9m98HkNQzJy7dZJ?si=9kKti9hKT8aCmpeqdZdfkA And the JODA Selects playlist for a sampling of some of the music that influenced the record: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7vqcCIUpiVOOz5GBcQjtNl?si=a219e12d638140a6 Learn more about your ad choices. Giacchino's 2009 score for the Pixar hit Up earned him an Oscar®, a Golden Globe®, the BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics' Choice Award and two GRAMMY® Awards. Giacchino studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. After college, he landed a marketing job at Disney and began studies in music composition, first at Juilliard, and then at UCLA. He moved from marketing to producing in the newly formed Disney Interactive Division where he had the opportunity to write music for video games. After moving to DreamWorks Interactive, he was asked to score the temp track for the video game adaptation of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Subsequently, Steven Spielberg hired him as the composer and it became the first PlayStation game to have a live orchestral score, recorded with members of the Seattle Symphony. Giacchino went on to score numerous video games including Spielberg's Medal of Honor series. Giacchino's work in video games sparked the interest of J.J. Abrams, and thus began their long-standing relationship that would lead to scores for the hit television series Alias and Lost, and the feature films Mission Impossible III, Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness. Additional projects include collaborations with Disney Imagineering on music for Space Mountain, Star Tours (with John Williams), the Ratatouille ride in Disneyland Paris, and the Incredicoaster on Pixar Pier at California Adventure. Giacchino was the musical director of the 81st Annual Academy Awards®. His music can be heard in concert halls internationally with all three Star Trek films, Ratatouille, Jurassic World, Up and Coco being performed live-to-picture with a full orchestra. In June 2018, Giacchino premiered his first work for symphony orchestra, Voyage. Commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the piece celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of NASA. In July 2019, a third movement was added for the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. Jojo Rabbit, the critically acclaimed Fox Searchlight film written and directed by Taika Waititi, earned Giacchino a BAFTA nomination this year. His upcoming film projects include Matt Reeves' The Batman. Giacchino's first LP of original music, Travelogue Vol 1, featuring his Nouvelle Modernica orchestra, is described as a story in song and will be released on Mondo Records in October 2020. Giacchino serves as the Governor of the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and sits on the advisory board of Education Through Music Los Angeles.

It is time once again for us to reckon with the darkness inside us. The pain and longing. The struggle. The loss. The nurses. Yes, it's time for another VGG! Thanks for coming! We are joined this week by first-time guest but already-friend-of-the-show Cassie Baralis from Ship to Shore. As one of the "many hats" people at StS, Cassie handles brand and licensing for the label but is also a fan of music, vinyl, and darkness in her own right. And for this episode, Cassie is bringing us LISA the Painful RPG from Ghost Ramp Records. LISA is one of those hidden gems (totally unknown to some of our hosts) and Cassie sheds some light on the game itself, enlightens and evangelizes it over some of its contemporaries, and brings special focus on Austin Jorgensen's... unorthodox... score for the unusual one-man-created game. Next, Anthony is back in Mondo Records' thrall again with the release of Silent Hill 2. This iconic game and its iconic music both deserve some illumination, and Anthony and Cassie both have this one in their blood. Although we may not have composer Akira Yamaoka's recommended alcohol pairings on hand, we nurse our intoxication with the music and the mood, and generally adore the vinyl incarnation of this video game legend. In our second segment, of course, news and releases, and links below to let you spend that money (or those "dirty mags") on some stuff you might not have even known you needed. At least one record label is shutting down, but another will rise from its ashes! Finally, we get to spend some time with Cassie talking about some behind-the-scenes stuff working at a "weirdo" label like Ship to Shore. When you've spent so much of your life on a record label and you know what you like, what does that mean for licensing? How did Osamu Sato get involved on their recent release of LSD Revamped? What are the complications with licensing anyway? Did she get another tattoo? Anime?? Give us a listen! The Blasting Company is a band of multi-instrumentalists known for their specialty in a multitude of musical genres, past and present. Founded as a street band in Nashville by brothers Joshua Kaufman and Justin Rubenstein, the band eventually landed in Los Angeles where they were quickly introduced to the world film and television. Early ventures into film scores include songs written for Burlesque and Five-Year Engagement, but they are probably best known for their score on the Emmy-winning animated series, Over the Garden Wall. The score garnered millions of views by fans on YouTube, prompting Mondo Records to release the first ever vinyl soundtrack of a Cartoon Network show.Their latest series is Costume Quest, released by Amazon on March 8th of 2019. Costume Quest is based on the popular video game series by Double Fine Productions and the world originally created by Tasha Sounart. The show features four kids facing off against the dark forces lurking in the shadows of their sleepy town of Auburn Pines. To overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, they must learn to unlock and master the magical powers of super-normal costumes-with each costume comes a new set of transformations and powers. In this episode, Joshua Kaufman and Justin Rubenstein take us through the development of their catchy main theme for COSTUME QUEST. They share eight versions of their theme, from their original sketches through to the final iteration and in between they vividly describe the process of writing, receiving feedback from the show runners, and finally implementing that feedback.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS03:02 - Piano sketch04:20 - Version 105:18 - Version 206:51 - Version 308:50 - Version 410:24 - Version 511:54 - Version 612:50 - Final VersionOTHER TRACKS00:54 - "Team Elephant"01:49 - "Let's Catch Up"14:07 - "End Credits"14:31 - "Team Elephant"SOUNDTRACKNo information about an official release of the soundtrack is currently available.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERYou can find out more about and hear more music by The Blasting Company at their official site https://www.blastingcompany.com/ or follow them on Twitter: @blastingcompanyABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.comSUBSCRIBEiTunesSpotifyStitcher RadioRadioPublicGoogle Play PodcastsRSS Feed

It's been a little while, but technical issues be darned to heck! We are back! And we're back in style. Video Game Grooves returns for a probably-classic episode as Paul and Jeremy combine forces with our good friend Tom from Laced Records! This week we explore some classic indie "chip-style" music with a throw back to 2011's precision-platformer Dustforce, with Fastfall: Dustforce by Lifeformed. We discuss some of the influences that the album had on indie music for the next several years, and where the Hitbox Team game fits into the pantheon of punishment that the genre represents today. We then continue with every year's game-of-the-year The Last of Us, from Mondo Records. We ruminate on the virtuosic style of Gustavo "Gus" Santaolalla, and how his personal compositions might have been translated into the audio design of the game itself. We then proceed to the news and new releases (which are now slightly-aged releases) and point you in the direction of the next opportunity to drain your wallet, and the latest happenings in the world of video game music on vinyl records. Finally, inspired by Dustforce, we enter into a discussion of the identity of "post-chip" music, and whether its day has come and gone, where it is now, and some of the essential picks in the genre that have been released on vinyl.
