My guest today is Alorah Bliese.I met Alorah through Shannon Cochran-Yzquierdo, a well-known guest on the podcast, and I'm so grateful for the connection! Thank you, Shannon!Alorah is a queer, neurodivergent scientist. They work as an interdisciplinary researcher, specializing in molecular marine biology. As a bisexual+ and non-binary person that is cisgender and heterosexual passing, they have experienced harmful stereotypes and erasure in their personal and professional life. In our conversation today, Alorah shares pieces of their story in hopes to shine light on the experience of invisibility within the queer community and raise awareness about people that exist on spectrums rather than binaries. She is currently the co-lead of the San Diego PRIDE employee resource group within her company, working to provide resources, education, and community to queer employees and allies, and is an advocate for DEI in and out of work.Alorah, thank you so much for sharing these elements of your story and journey. Thank you for your compassion and wisdom in caring for yourself and others. And thank you for your willingness to jump into conversation and storytelling. I know your story will touch many lives and help others know they are not alone. There are links to resources in the show notes. San Diego Pride will host its 'Transgender Day of Empowerment' celebration on Friday, April 5.
Award-winning and Billboard-charting artist Flamy Grant is a shame-slaying, hip-swaying, singing-songwriting drag queen from western North Carolina. Her 2022 debut record, Bible Belt Baby, was nominated for Best Pop Album at the San Diego Music Awards, and she is a winner of the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition. Both a powerhouse vocalist and an intrepid songwriter, Flamy blends the art of drag with her iconic folk/rock sound to create a memorable musical experience. Flamy is the first drag performer to appear on Christian music charts, with both her song “Good Day” and her Album Bible Belt Baby reaching #1 on iTunes — the latter staying at the top for nine consecutive days. Additionally, “Good Day” debuted at #20 on Billboard's Christian digital sales chart. Flamy has collaborated with Adeem the Artist, Jennifer Knapp, Semler, and Derek Webb. In addition to playing the New Folk winner's showcase at the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival, she has played Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina, San Diego Pride's SheFest, and is headlining Blount County Pride in East Tennessee this September. It's no accident that Flamy's drag name is an homage to Amy Grant, the undisputed queen of Christian music and 90s chart-topping pop artist. Much of Flamy's music centers on the queer spiritual journey, telling stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are frequently ignored by, harmed in, or ejected from religious spaces. With a bold lip, a big lash, and a blistering voice, Flamy drags audiences to a soulful, uplifting church of her own making. This down-to-earth diva has entertained music lovers from Los Angeles to Nashville with her funny, frank, and fabulous songs. Another Kind of EpidemicHow AHF is combating the opioid epidemic nationwideGUEST BIO:Vahe Lepedjian is an Advanced Practice Pharmacist at AHF's Hollywood flagship pharmacy.Maxie Sabackic is the Western Regional Director of Pharmacy Operations, overseeing all pharmacy operations within the AHF pharmacies served out of California, Washington, and Nevada.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:09] - It Starts with a TextA simple beginning to a transformative shiftOne day, Vahe texted Maxie about wanting to do more to combat the opioid pandemic. This simple instance of acting on a positive impulse led to the involvement of sales, public health, advocacy, and managed care departments and AHF partners to offer fentanyl test strips to countless patients and community members. Lives were potentially saved at the very first event where the strips were given out, after two people back to report they had detected deadly fentanyl in a drug sample. A couple days later, 300 units were gone after a single day of San Diego Pride.[7:54] - A Higher-Risk Patient BaseWhat AHF patients should knowAHF patients are at a higher risk of contracting HIV due to IV drug use, something that pharmacists and clinicians at AHF have to be mindful of when treating them. If fentanyl is injected, even if its been cut into other drugs, it can be fatal.[12:04] - Spreading the Word, Spreading the HelpGetting knowledge and test strips nationwideMaxie emphasizes the end goal of AHF's efforts— fighting the opioid epidemic. They've obtained a grant with the Naloxone Distribution Project which provides free units of Narcan, allowing them to hand them out to the community for free. They hope to spread this service to as many states as possible to make the largest possible impact— all while educating pharmacists on their role.[15:45] - If You're Struggling with AddictionThe first step is the most importantIf you're struggling with opioid addiction, know that you can always find support. When you're ready to make a change, AHF will be there to help you make it. AHF can provide Narcan and the training to know how to use it.RESOURCES:[1:41] About the Opioid Epidemic[18:49] Host an Event: preventoverdose@aidshealth.org[19:37] Prevent-Overdose.comFOLLOW:Follow Lauren Hogan: LinkedInFollow AHFter Hours: InstagramABOUT AFTER HOURS:The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is the world's largest HIV/AIDS service organization, operating in 45 countries globally. We recorded this episode on Fri. June 12, 2020, which marks our 92nd day of self-quarantine during the global COVID-19 pandemic, amid continuing protests in the United States and around the world against systemic racism, oppression, and police brutality. On social media this past week, author and activist Marianne Williamson posted this: “The more the protests are filled with dancing, singing, conscious conversation, serious analysis, creativity, art, peace/love and higher vibration, the more they jam the operating system of the old order. #WokeRebellion” – Marianne Williamson on Twitter (6/11/20) And we agree. So, we're going to have a conversational version of a dancing, singing, peace and love podcast, to celebrate Pride Month, which is June, if you don't know. Also, if you don't know: a crucial part of sustainable conscious activism is retaining your ability to enjoy, and prioritizing time to enjoy things. For one, it renews and replenishes your spirit, allowing you to stay in the fight. And for another, it's one of the very reasons we fight at all: ideals like equality and justice are beautiful in part because they make enjoyment of life possible. What good are civil rights without the ability to enjoy the life they make possible? Join us now for some enjoyment that celebrates LGBTQ-positive peace, love, and laughs. Let's talk about some of our favorite, fun-loving LGBTQ-positive Pride Festival memories performing at Long Beach Pride, San Diego Pride, and attending Los Angeles and Portland Pride Festivals Movies like Fried Green Tomatoes, The Half of It, A League of Their Own, Saving Face, and the documentary A Secret Love TV shows or people with TV shows like Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, Ryan Murphy, American Horror Story, Sarah Paulson, Matt Bomer, and Sinner Other celebrities and artists like Hannah Gadsby, Indigo Girls, Tig Notaro, Brandi Carlile, Ellen and Portia, and LGBTQ ally Kathy Griffin To close out this Pride Month episode, here's a remarkable look at the fight for LGBTQ marriage equality, compared to another, similar and salient issue. In the late 1950s, more than 90 percent of the country was against marriage between...blacks and whites. It took 40 years before a majority were OK with so-called ‘mixed-race' marriages. By comparison, public opinion about LGBTQ marriage equality went from a majority opposed to a majority OK with it, within just ten years. What we as a society are now pushing for in 2020, is the revolutionary and rapid advancement of more equality, justice, fairness, and other beautiful things, for more of us: a more perfect Union. And that's really something to celebrate. Happy Pride Month. Our guest today is Brandan Robertson, a noted LGBTQ author, activist, and pastor, who works at the intersections of spirituality and social renewal. He currently serves as the Lead Pastor of Missiongathering Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in San Diego, CA. Since July, the Missiongathering Church has been under attack from the conservative city leaders of San Diego, who seem hell-bent to mortally cripple the mission of the church as well as the organization itself. Per the church, "Missiongathering believes that The City of San Diego may be violating our religious liberty as a church and we are committed to fighting these actions for the sake of the survival of the church and our right to be who God has called us to be- and who we've always been. It is a fundamental call of Christ to reach out to those who are in need, to clothe the naked, and to be a good steward of our resources. " Listen today as we hear their story and the fight they have undertaken. Named by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the top faith-leaders leading the fight for human rights, Brandan has has worked with political and social leaders around the world to end conversion therapy and promoted LGBT+ rights. Robertson currently serves as the co-chair of San Diego Pride's DevOUT Interfaith Coalition, has served as thenational spokesperson of Evangelicals For Marriage Equality and developed the Evangelical Outreach Program for Faith In Public Life and the Bridging the Divides Program for Interfaith Alliance of Colorado. Discussion of: (1) a familiar Texas federal district court judge issuing another nationwide injunction against the Obama administration; (2) a disappointing 4-3 decision on birth certificates from the Arkansas Supreme Court; (3) a Louisiana court declaring an executive order of Governor John Bel Edwards unconstitutional; and (4) the sad final chapter in the saga arising out of a public nudity arrest at San Diego Pride in 2011. Summer is here and Pride season is in full swing! I am thrilled and honored to be a part of this year’s inaugural UNITE! Music Festival at San Diego Pride; a weekend that’s gearing up to be what feels like is going to be the biggest pride celebration on the west coast this summer. On Saturday night, I’ll be playing at OVERDRIVE at Spin Nightclub, alongside three absolute legends: Ivan Gomez, Nina Flowers and Dawna Montell. I hope you enjoy this podcast. And now, more than ever, it's important that we continue owning the gay dance floor as a place to feel safe and to express ourselves. Our music and our celebrations of Pride must not be silenced. I end this podcast with one of the most special remixes in the world to me, my idol, Junior Vasquez’s, 1998 Pride mix of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” – it’s not your typical modern circuit fare, but it’s a very powerful musical journey (in and of itself) which I hope to be able to introduce for the first time to many of my podcast listeners. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s beautiful smiles on the dance floor for UNITE! Arthur's Live set recorded at the San Diego Pride Parade. 20 tracks of some of the most well-known (and not-so-well-known) tracks in progressive house, club, and electro mixed live for the masses! New tracks and classics all tossed up to create one HUGE party! This event was simply amazing—cranking tunes and rockin’ out on top of a double-decker bus/float driving through the city from block to block as people danced in the streets!
