The brothers round out the Adventure Puzzler category with Ron Gilbert's The Cave, developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Sega in January 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Steam. Pete and Tom were pleasantly surprised at Ant's recommendation this week. Ant enjoyed the cave's corny narration and Pete revealed his favorite puzzles were the ones where he had to be patient and do math. Pete also lists off some characters that didn't make it into the final game and continually refers to a sequel that was never made and almost certainly never will be.  Director Ron Gilbert was also the co-founder of another game development studio, Humongous Entertainment, which focused on educational games geared towards kids in the 1990s. 2 Player Productions is a documentary crew that's been embedded with Double Fine Productions for more than a decade now, having first come onboard in order to follow the development of Broken Age and create the Double Fine Adventure series.However, it's their latest work that's absolutely knocked my socks off. Double Fine PsychOdyssey is, quite simply, the best video games documentary work I've ever seen. It follows the much longer development of Psychonauts 2 and is just the most vulnerable, revealing look into what it really means to create a video game. I cannot recommend it enough. Gosh. It's so good."There's a lot of concern about that meeting, rightfully so. It was the most intense thing we've had on camera and everybody was upset, we were upset. I thought that if we cut it out, it would do a disservice to the evolution of the studio and the way that mindsets at the studio were shaped, the way that the culture was shaped... Psychonauts is a platforming game developed by Double Fine Productions that first released in 2005. The game was initially published by Majesco Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Xbox and PlayStation 2; Budcat Creations helped with the PlayStation 2 port. In 2011, Double Fine acquired the rights for the title, allowing the company to republish the title with updates for modern gaming systems and ports for OS X and Linux. Psychonauts follows the player-character Razputin (Raz) (voiced by Richard Horvitz), a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers to become a "Psychonaut", a spy with psychic abilities. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop. The game is centered on exploring the strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz encounters as a Psychonaut-in-training/"Psycadet" to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles. Psychonauts was based on an abandoned concept that Tim Schafer had during the development of Full Throttle, which he expanded out into a full game through his then new company Double Fine. The game was initially backed by Microsoft's Ed Fries as a premiere title for the original Xbox console, but several internal and external issues led to difficulties for Double Fine in meeting various milestones and responding to testing feedback. Following Fries' departure in 2004, Microsoft dropped the publishing rights, making the game's future unclear. Double Fine was able to secure Majesco as a publisher a few months later allowing them to complete the game after four and a half years of development. The Blasting Company is a band of multi-instrumentalists known for their specialty in a multitude of musical genres, past and present. Founded as a street band in Nashville by brothers Joshua Kaufman and Justin Rubenstein, the band eventually landed in Los Angeles where they were quickly introduced to the world film and television. Early ventures into film scores include songs written for Burlesque and Five-Year Engagement, but they are probably best known for their score on the Emmy-winning animated series, Over the Garden Wall. The score garnered millions of views by fans on YouTube, prompting Mondo Records to release the first ever vinyl soundtrack of a Cartoon Network show.Their latest series is Costume Quest, released by Amazon on March 8th of 2019. Costume Quest is based on the popular video game series by Double Fine Productions and the world originally created by Tasha Sounart. The show features four kids facing off against the dark forces lurking in the shadows of their sleepy town of Auburn Pines. To overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, they must learn to unlock and master the magical powers of super-normal costumes-with each costume comes a new set of transformations and powers.In this episode, Joshua Kaufman and Justin Rubenstein take us through the development of their catchy main theme for COSTUME QUEST.
