CW: Spoilers for Conclave. The author Jacob Bacharach returns to the pod for a show about Edward Berger's entertaining political thriller Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes as a conflicted Cardinal who is required to preside over the selection of the new Pope, and amidst the infighting among the Cardinals, uncovers a shocking conspiracy within the halls of power in Vatican City. To discuss the reaction to Conclave from some offended Catholics means we have to spoil the big twist, but despite this movie being practically a commercial for the virtues of The Holy See and the future of the church, many have been outraged by the film's “liberal agenda” and its interpretation of Catholic dogma and we review some of the apoplectic highlights, from Megyn Kelly to Catholic film critics. We also discuss some of Our Boys in this: John Lithgow's ambitions to be the first Canadian Pontiff, and the two Italian men who would be Pope, Sergio Castellitto's racist, vaping Cardinal and the American liberal Stanley Tucci. We also discuss a completely forgotten all-star religious epic that is vaguely relevant to Conclave, 1972's Pope Joan, starring Liv Ullmann as a pious ninth-century woman who disguises herself as a man to save her life, moves up the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and is elected Pope, a medieval legend the film presents as fact. On the two hundred and sixty-first episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST, the crew are confined to a claustrophobic setting.Christian and Jericho are onto 2025 with a review of the Norwegian chamber drama ARMAND (without Armando!), which is directed by the grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullmann. With that prestigious heritage in mind, they decide to pair it with Bergman's soul-crushing 1972 classic CRIES AND WHISPERS. But first, THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES (1996), SWEET CHARITY (1969), and A DIFFERENT MAN (2024) gets bandied about in the Recently Watched segment. They also react to The Oscars broadcast, mourn the dissolution of the Brody bump, and get deep with thoughts on metaphoric horror and failed symbolism.Subscribe to Jericho's Substack: symbioticreviews.substack.comKeep in touch with us on Instagram and email us anytime at: TheThirdActPodcast@gmail.com

Send us a Text Message.Yes, Kristin Lavransdatter is the highest-grossing Norwegian film of all time. That isn't as impressive as it might sound, as the movie only brought in $3.7 million in box office receipts, but virtually all of that came from domestic sales. Pretty much unknown outside Scandinavia, the movie was a sensation when released in Norway in 1995. An estimated two-thirds of the country's population have viewed it. The movie is based on the first volume of Sigrid Undset's trilogy about the life of an ordinary woman in fourteenth century Norway, which won her the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. Directed and written by the celebrated Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, the film is a very faithful adaptation. The production strove for historical accuracy in costume and settings, and most of the dialogue is taken directly from the novel. (Sigrid Undset is credited as co-screenplay writer.) The reason I decided to devote a short episode to this movie and to its source novel is they both are worthy attempts to examine an aspect of the Middle Ages virtually ignored in popular culture, the life of ordinary people. Kristin Lavransdatter is the coming of age story of young woman from a prosperous family in rural fourteenth-century Norway who is seduced by and falls in love with a knight with a (justifiably) scandalous reputation. Whether Kristin's mentalité in the novel and film is really "medieval" is a matter of academic debate. But the care with which Undset in her novel and Ullmann in the film recreate the religious rituals, customs, and everyday life in early fourteenth-century Norway is impressive and worth a reading and a viewing.Listen on Podurama https://podurama.com Intro and exit music are by Alexander NakaradaIf you have questions, feel free to contact me at richard.abels54@gmail.com
Embark on a journey of enlightenment as we explore the legacy of Sirene, the radical feminist magazine that stormed through 1970s Norway with a force that resonated far beyond its time. With cultural and media scholar, Synnøve Skarsbø Lindtner, shedding light on the magazine's enduring impact from her doctoral thesis, we trace the ripples of change and challenge that Sirene sent through society. The magazine, with its bold take on politics as a personal moral choice, redefined the cultural landscape, advocating that the responsibility of societal transformation begins with individual action. As we unravel the threads of Sirene's story, we grapple with the complexities of modern-day politics and the part personal agency plays in collective movements. Drawing parallels with the present, we examine the contentious issues that polarize us - climate crisis, women's rights, racism, and ableism - to understand our role in shaping a brighter future. This episode is more than a reflection on a groundbreaking publication; it's a clarion call for hope and action, urging you, the listener, to wield your choices with conviction in a world that often seems divided. Join us in honoring the voices that roar for change and in contemplating the weight of our own in this pivotal moment in history. The Magazine SIRENE Support the showFollow my PatreonSupport my content at Buy me a Coffee:

God lytting!
Once again, Cinema60 communes with the dead in order to highlight some notable opinions on film. Tonight's ghost guest is Susan Sontag and her seminal Sight and Sound review on Ingmar Bergman's Persona. Known primarily as an author, filmmaker and intellect, in the 1960s Sontag was just beginning her illustrious career as a writer – her essay “Notes on ‘Camp'” helped to define the camp aesthetic to the public at large. Simiarly, her 1967 review of Persona has endured throughout the ages, rising above other contemporary voices to help audiences (old and new alike) better derive meaning from Bergman's rather abstract film. In this episode, Bart and Jenna use Sontag's article as a sounding board to dissect Bergman's filmmaking and explore the depths of Persona. Easy enough for Bart, who likely would have chosen this film himself if the episode had been about his favorite ‘60s pick. Meanwhile, Jenna muses on the idea that all cinema must have a “point” – even if sometimes the point is that there is no point. The following film is discussed:• Persona (1966) Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann, Margaretha KrookAlso mentioned:• Journey to Italy (1954) Viaggio in Italia Directed by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders, Maria Mauban• L'avventura (1960) Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni Starring Monica Vitti, Gabriele Ferzetti, Lea Massari• Last Year at Marienbad (1961) L'année dernière à Marienbad Directed by Alain Resnais Starring Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha Pitoëff• Through a Glass Darkly (1961) Såsom i en spegel Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Harriet Andersson, Gunnar Björnstrand, Max von Sydow• The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) Directed by John Ford Starring James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles• Winter Light (1963) Nattvardsgästerna Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand, Gunnel Lindblom• The Silence (1963) Tystnaden Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Ingrid Thulin, Gunnel Lindblom, Birger Malmsten• Hour of the Wolf (1968) Vargtimmen Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann, Gertrud Fridh• Shame (1968) Skammen Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Liv Ullmann, Max von Sydow, Sigge Fürst• Duet for Cannibals (1969) Duett för kannibaler Directed by Susan Sontag Starring Adriana Asti, Lars Ekborg, Gösta Ekman• The Passion of Anna (1969) En passion Directed by Ingmar Bergman Starring Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson, Max von Sydow• Brother Carl (1971) Bröder Carl Directed by Susan Sontag Starring Geneviève Page, Gunnel Lindblom, Keve Hjelm• The Point (1971) Directed by Fred Wolf Starring Ringo Starr, Mike Lookinland, Lennie Weinrib• Promised Lands (1974) Directed by Susan Sontag• Inland Empire (2006) Directed by David Lynch Starring Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Jeremy Irons

Ryan helps us decipher Ingmar Bergman's opaque story of two women -- one mute, the other a nurse -- who spend time together at a seaside cottage.
The rebellious son of a Lutheran pastor, he worked in the theatre before directing his first film, Crisis (1945). He won international acclaim for his films The Seventh Seal (1957) and Wild Strawberries (1957). He assembled a group of actors, including Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, and a cinematographer, Sven Nykvist, with whom he made powerful films often marked by bleak depictions of human loneliness, including Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Cries and Whispers (1972), Autumn Sonata (1978), and Fanny and Alexander (1982). Bergman later wrote screenplays for The Best Intentions (1992) and Private Confessions (1996). He directed a number of television movies, most notably Saraband (2003), which received a theatrical release. Throughout his career Bergman continued to direct stage productions, usually at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre. From https://www.britannica.com/summary/Ingmar-Bergman.
Known for her roles in the films of Ingmar Bergman, Liv Ullmann has also won acclaim on stage and behind the camera. In 2014, she wrote and directed an adaptation of August Strindberg's play Miss Julie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Last week, Ullmann was presented with an honorary Oscar for her exceptional contribution to the art of film. Eleanor Wachtel spoke to Liv Ullmann at TIFF in 2014. This interview originally aired on Wachtel on the Arts on Sept. 16, 2014.
