Welcome to August 4th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate one smart cookie and a bitter beer. Ruth Wakefield ran the Toll House Inn with her husband in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth was a renowned baker, but she is best known for adding semisweet chocolate to her butterscotch cookie dough. This recipe became a regional favorite, and during World War II it caused a cookie craze. Soldiers from Massachusetts that were stationed overseas began to receive chocolate chip cookies in care packages from home. Soon Wakefield was inundated with requests for her cookie recipe from all around the globe. Nestle offered her a lifetime supply of chocolate in exchange for it, and to this day the Toll House recipe is printed on every bag of chocolate chips. On National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day celebrate the sweet success of one smart cookie. In the late 1700s, the British Empire spanned the globe, and one of its largest colonies was India. The Brits living there demanded goods from back home which created a significant trade route between the two countries. One of the most popular imports was beer, which didn't age well when it was shipped to warmer climates. George Hodgson of the Bow Brewery came up with a solution. He brewed a lighter beer, called pale ale, then increased the amount of alcohol and hops in order to prevent spoilage. The downside was that the hops would lose their fruity flavor and produce a bitter taste. And so India Pale Ale was born. Some say this drink is an acquired taste, but on National IPA Day we celebrate beer that really went the distance. I'm Anna Devere and I'm John McClain filling in for Marlo Anderson. It's National IPA Day and we're celebrating it with friends! Listen now as Walt and Dan are joined by special guests John Blakey of the Daily Growler and Jess Hinshaw of Upright Press to sample our current portfolio of IPAs - including the soon-to-be-released Party Parrot Hazy IPA – and talk about the upcoming Prints and Pints event happening at the Daily Growler (S. High location) on August 13th!
Ian and Kevin (and the Molly-Whop crew) haven taken heat for their M's negativity all season, and yesterday was no exception, but it makes perfect sense to be critical of a team that could have made more trades to be better positioned to compete for the playoffs while still celebrating its successes. Ian defends the show's position, and listeners respond. On Something Good, a TV weatherman discovers his weather map is a touchscreen, and No-Li Brewhouse is honored in New York on National IPA Day.
This week, we decided to drink 3 beers from Milewide Brewing Company in Louisville, KY. For National IPA day specifically, we saved the sour IPA for last! Shoutout to Ashlee, Brand Specialist and Co-Host of our sister podcast, "Healthcare Horrors," for bringing back these beers after the Kentucky Derby Meet and Greet we had back in May. :) Happy responsible beer drinking, and National IPA Day, everybody!

HAPPY NATIONAL IPA DAY!! We figured that this will be a great day to do a show. National IPA Day on the first Thursday in August celebrates the beer known as India Pale Ale Beer. IPA is one of the most popular types of craft beers, it's also making a resurgence with local microbreweries. Many are experiencing success as their brew finds its way into local restaurants and pubs. First, for this episode and for National IPA Day we focused on two IPAs from two Breweries. The beers that we had were the Verification Code Double IPA from Cerebral and the Pillow Stacks Double IPA from Outer Range. The Verification Code is hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Lotus & Motueka. The tangerine and orange flavors are abundant in this one. Pillow Stacks Nose is wonderful, fresh mango and passion fruit. Taste is a nice hybrid between the IPA and NEIPA styles. Orange and tangerine combine nicely with the mango and passion fruit over a light but large malt base. Finish is a moderate citrus rind bitterness.
Happy National IPA Day! Here are some fun facts about IPAs and a list of the "best" IPAs of 2020 and 2021. Go support your local brewery today, and every day! #nationalIPAday #IPAday #BEERMIGHTYTHINGS
This 1000 Mile Race Defines The Phrase "Work Like A Dog." Welcome to August 5th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate dogs and beers that go the distance. Before snowmobiles and airplanes, the best way to get around in snow country was via dog sled. This method of transportation is rare today, but once a year in Alaska, racers and their teams of dogs keep the tradition alive with a race called the Iditarod. Sleds travel from Anchorage to Nome, a journey of nearly 1,000 miles! It takes the team of 16 dogs at least a week to complete this distance. This not only commemorates the role that dogs played in the settlement of Alaska, it defines the saying “work like a dog.” On National Work Like a Dog Day, you may wanna let your pooch curl up on the couch while you do the heavy lifting. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. After the overwhelming success of Podcast Day 2014 the event was rebranded to International Podcast Day to ensure the world is involved. “September 30th will be a day to celebrate podcast producers and a day to celebrate podcast consumers around the world,” said Steve Lee. “It's a day where we can educate the world about the wonders of podcasting.” As more and more mainstream broadcasters and celebrities start releasing podcasts, the market is booming and the download numbers don't lie. The entertainment system in the car you will be driving in as early as two years will be able to stream podcasts. Airlines have already stocked their “inflight entertainment” options with various podcasts flyers can listen to at 34,000 feet. It's like being in the early days of TV and Radio, but also it has provided an avenue to create audio and video information, education and entertainment, which can't be found through traditional media. It is thought that as podcasting becomes a more integral aspect of entertainment, education and self expression, the public needs to be familiar with the term and know what they are. This is where where International Podcast Day comes in. InternationalPodcastDay.com has been set up, not only as a resource, but also as a site where current podcasters, listeners or anyone curious about podcasting can go and learn about the industry, get the word out about this broadcast medium. Remember that podcasting is meant to be both educational and fun. Lee and his team want everyone to go out and spread the word; International Podcast Day is September 30.
