The craft beer era has given rise to thousands of stories, but none like that of Moon Dog.Founders Karl van Buuren and brothers Josh and Jake Uljans announced themselves to an unsuspecting beer world in the manner of a custard pie to the face – well before custard pie beers were a thing – and have never stopped evolving and innovating. Neither have they lost focus on keeping two words – "delicious" and "fun" – at the heart of everything they do. After a few years of ever more outrageous releases, they opened their first venue in Abbotsford on the site of their first brewery (and schoolmates Josh and Karl's home for 14 months) before introducing a core range, growing fast, and taking over neighbouring buildings in Abbotsford as they became available.Arguably just as outrageous as their early beers was what came in 2019: Moon Dog World, a vast venue in Preston that saw them convert a warehouse into a tropical paradise complete with waterfall, lagoon and Wall of Warnie.Since then, they've embraced the arrival of hard seltzers in Australia, with Fizzer becoming one of the biggest brands in the country, and explored other avenues within the world of RTDs, while expanding their portfolio of megavenues. Indeed, the last of these was the main reason we sat down with Josh and Karl this week.We joined them at Doglands, a 1200-capacity venue on the concourse of Marvel Stadium that was set to welcome people headed to Travis Scott's show later that night. It arrives hot on the heels of Moon Dog Wild West in the former Franco Cozzo building in Footscray, and just weeks (they hope) before they open in Frankston. Our chat covers Moon Dog's evolution from craft brewer to multi-beverage producer and entertainment provider, the challenges and benefits of running vast venues, the importance of remaining true to yourself and your brand – whatever you end up doing, building and retaining great teams, and having fun along the way.The conversation with them begins at 10:20.Prior to that, we discuss stories from the week just gone, including the heartwarming tale of the changing of the guard at the Sunshine Coast's oldest brewery, where the owners' youngest daughter has taken up the reins, and the launch of a new Beer Cocktails series on The Crafty Pint. You'll find links relevant to the show here:A Curran Affair: Sunshine Coast's Oldest Brewery Passes To The Next Generation: https://craftypint.com/news/3602/a-curran-affair-sunshine-coasts-oldest-brewery-passes-to-the-next-generationBeer Cocktails with Matt at Melville: https://craftypint.com/news/3604/beer-cocktails-with-matt-at-melville-simcoe-smashSpangled Drongo Brewery: https://craftypint.com/brewery/865/spangled-drongo-brewery Bearhug Pallet Wraps: https://craftypint.com/business/1428/bearhug-pallet-wraps Be A Pint Of Origin Venue In 2025: https://craftypint.com/news/3591/be-a-pint-of-origin-host-venue-in-2025The Gin Drinker's Toolkit Launch: https://craftypint.com/event/13493/gin-drinkers-toolkit-book-launch--gin-party--milton-commonOur breaking story on Moon Dog's plans for Docklands: https://craftypint.com/news/3219/marvel-ous-moon-dog-to-open-vast-docklands-brewpub Building Moon Dog's World: https://craftypint.com/news/2198/building-moon-dogs-worldSun Tap Decals: https://www.suntapdecals.com.au/ To find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

It's tough to find positive news when looking at beer and brewery stats right now. New permit applications are down, beer festivals are on the decline, and we've all seen the closures of some of our favorite breweries this year. However, there's a small ray of hope for Anchor Brewing after announcing their closure last week. A few investors have stepped forward to express their interest in buying the brewery. Two have said they'll keep things small and focused to start, and one wants to make the relaunch a reality TV show. Oof.Beer Festival BustSpeaking of beer fests... Some of the biggest festivals in the country are on hiatus, or cancelled. Folks just don't seem to be as in to them as they used to be. With that country's largest festival, Great American Beer Fest, coming up soon all eyes are on the turnout there. We think it may not be beer fests as much of the type of fests, with a preference for smaller, specialized events. What do you think? On the science front, Omega Yeast Labs has found the gene responsible for bringing the haze to your hazies. They're calling it HZY1. After comparing yeast strains that produce hazier beers and isolating this gene, they've got the magic formula. We'll have to wait to see what this may mean in the future.Beer Cocktails on the riseSurvey says more people are trying beer cocktails these days, or they're expressing an interest in trying them. For now, the research is on gateway cocktails like beeritas, shandies, and radlers. But once they're through the gate who knows what may happen. For our Midwest listeners, have you had Red Beer? Is it still a thing? My dad drank "Tomato Beers" back in the day but I just thought it was a crazy thing he did. Google says this beer cocktail is still pretty popular in the region. When I first experienced beer cocktails I don't think that was even a term at the time. As a kid my parents used to enjoy what they called "Tomato Beers." It their simplest form it was simply tomato juice and a macro lager over ice with some salt and pepper. To fancy it up they may use V8 juice or shove a celery stalk in the glass. Sort of a podunk Michelada. I stole sips at the time and I guess I enjoyed it; I sure do enjoy a Michelada now. It's likely you've dabbled with beer cocktails as well. A simple Boilermaker or Black & Tan are technically beer cocktails. Now we've got a whole variety to check out liked the Dublin Iced Coffee, Hazy Day Afternoon, or maybe an El Chapo. Beer cocktails can be pretty simple or overly complex. But they're a fun way to mix things up with your beers. If you've got a favorite let us know! And here's one to get you started... Hazy Day Afternoon Ingredients 1.5oz light rum 0.5oz guava nectar 0.5oz pineapple juice 0.5oz orange juice 0.25oz lime juice 0.5oz simple syrup Hazy IPA Preparation Combine all ingredients except IPA in a shaker and shake. Strain into Collins glass with fresh ice and top with IPA. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com The one thing about a Super Weekend with the NFL is that we'll have some big arguments about snacks, teams, and beer! Instacart isn't focusing on the teams playing - but they have the beers and snacks people order the most for the Super Bowl. I wasn't surprised at all by many on the list - but the number one beer spot was Modelo Especial! That was definitely the underdog from my personal picks - but it's a beer I'd drink any day of the week! Get the list of top snacks, dips, and more at The Snacktime Report https://www.instacart.com/company/updates/the-snacktime-report-here-for-the-snacks/ Here's a way to say I Love you for Valentine's Day, Birthdays, or really any big day - make ahead freezer cocktails! I haven't done this before, but I can tell you I'm going to start now. Who wouldn't want to reach into the freezer and pull out a perfectly chilled and ready-to-drink Martini, Negroni, Old-Fashioned, or (perhaps appropriately for this weekend and Monday) a Flame of Love? Several recipes, and the proper storage, shared by experts are included that can save your day or make the day. Do it now while you're thinking about it - and surprise your significant other. I'm going to go do it with a Milk and Honey & Kahlua recipe my wife loves. The link is at https://punchdrink.com/articles/make-your-freezer-cocktail-work-harder-death-co/ And this guy might be my hero as I've wanted to do this for a long time, but responsibilities… anyway - Paul MyHill went through the state of Colorado to drink through 467 breweries, brewpubs, taproom, and more. How long did it take him? A decade? 5 years? No - it took him 18 months! It started out, as many of these things do, going out for a round with a friend. Before he knew it he had a challenge of 30 breweries in 30 days, 100 in 100 days, and.. well you get the picture! Not only did he hit all those places in the state, but tracked stops at 150 places outside of the state while on vacations during that time! It's a return to the virtual Hopcast and a return to a theme we've done before: Beer Cocktails. Each of the crew come up with own variation on the theme. Our guest is regular listener Paul who quizzes the team on their real Sheffield beer credentials (spoiler alert: it doesn't go well). If you don't want to ruin the surprise of just how amazing Paul's beer cocktail creations are, stop reading now. Here are his recipes: "For Crying Out Loud" (breakfast stout cocktail) Add a shot of espresso (Tiamo from Pollards is my choice), shot of Bourbon, (Knob Creek is my choice) tablespoon of Chocolate ice cream (Our Cow Molly is my choice) to !/3 pt of Thornbridge Necessary Evil Imperial stout, and mix. Whip 100ml of double cream with a shot of Coffee Baileys, and float on top of stout mix. Top with Coco pops if you are Adam! "Tropicana Royale" Freeze a can of Tiny rebel Clwb Tropicana for 90 mins (so it turns to a slush) Put a shot of Pineapple gin, shot of orange juice, and 1/2 shot of sugar syrup in a glass and top up with beer slushie
I talk about top downloads, late naps, and beer cocktails. Cheers!

Texan at heart, and Oregonian at mind, Jacob Grier has had an amazing trek leading him to the publishing of his first book "Cocktails on Tap: The Art of Mixing Spirits and Beer". What started as path destined for political lobbying in DC turned askew into the world of coffee. This foundation in flavors and terroir ultimately spawned a deep interest and chronicling of cocktail composition.
