It was an ambitious bet, fed by over 25 years of experience in Action Sports and an unwavering passion for the industry and its brands in general. Originally from the Alps, Emmanuel began his career in the communications department at Val-Thorens before moving on to Salomon and later Rossignol, two iconic French Action Sports brands. A desire to go into apparel, and to get closer to the waves, brought him to Soorts and Billabong, which would later lead him to join DaKine, recently purchased by GSM. Starting as head of the European branch, he soon added on another role, and not the least: Global marketing VP. After two very intense years spent between France and the US, Emmanuel decided to leave the group to pursue a project he'd had in mind for a while: to take over a brand himself. It turned out to be Oxbow. The name came with history and solid heritage but the brand had lost its image, momentum and was in dire need of « dusting off ». At our mic, Emmanuel tells us step by step about his incredible entrepreneurial adventure, from finding investors to repositioning the brand and so on. This episode is an enthralling interview in which Emmanuel shares his insightful vision of the Action sports market and discusses its challenges as well as the opportunities still up for grabs. Enjoy the ride.
In this one, Cody talks to Tim Weisser. Like so many people, he came to Alaska to chase a dream. It was 1993 and he was a young snowboarder who wanted to ride the drastic and iconic mountains Alaska is known for. He had visions of bluebird days and big pow turns. So, with a few hundred bucks and his snowboard gear, he moved to Girdwood. There, he got a dishwashing job at Chair 5, but it wasn't long until he met Rob Baker, who worked at Boarderline, a snow and skate shop in Anchorage. That meeting between Tim and Rob led to a phone interview with one of the owners, Cody's dad, Scott Liska. Tim went on to work at the Dimond Center Boarderline. He found that he was good at keeping the shop tidy and also mentoring some of the kids who came into the shop. He grew up with a few mentors of his own, so he felt a responsibility to pay it forward. He realized that these kids didn't always need advice, what they needed was somebody to listen to them and to acknowledge their hardships. In 1994, Tim opened up the first Juneau Boarderline. He took the ferry there and the first thing he did was ditch his surfboard in the bushes. He says he didn't wanna drive around Juneau looking like a kook with a surfboard on his car. So, the next thing he does is call Scott to see what his next move should be. Scott tells him to get a hold of a 15 year old kid named Chris Currier. Chris had been calling the shop in Anchorage and talking about how Juneau needs a snow and skate shop there. Chris, by the way, would soon become one of the first Juneau Boys, a group of riders in Juneau who were pushing the boundaries of snowboarding in the ‘90s and early 2000s. After his time in Alaska, he went on to have a successful career in sales in the snowboard industry. He worked for Nitro Snowboards, DaKine and Smith Optics. Throughout his time in sales, he worked as a rep, in customer service, as a Marketing Manager, a Product Manager and then as a Sales Manager. Those jobs gave him the opportunity to snowboard, but more importantly, through them, he was introduced to people he now considers family. That same thing was true for Alaska. He says that most of his memories of the riding he did there have faded away over the years. There's a couple standout days, for sure, but it was everything around snowboarding and around the scene that really made an impression on him.

That's a pretty incredible story, whichever way you look at it. In addition to this Adventure Sports have just got the license for all the Dakine wind products too, we're expecting to see some interesting products coming out of the Cabrinha and Dakine brands over the next few years and it was great to sit down with Jon and find out a little more about where he has come from and what he has been up to over the last ten years or so!Enjoy!
Gwyn Howat is the CEO of Mt Baker. I interviewed her back in 2015 and lost the audio for 6 years! One of the most influential outdoor photographers in the industry Scott Markowitz talks about his career, some unique shooting experiences, and tips on how to become an Outdoor Photographer. Facebook Twitter Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast Please give us a rating and review HERE Show Notes Intro to Outdoors and Photography My stepping stone in, was, as a skier and becoming a professional skier and then moving onto the other side, from one side of the lens to the other, basically. I was a freestyle skier for oh three or four years competing on the pro mogul tour and then skiing in various ski movies and skiing for various photographers in the day. Intro to Photography I always had an interest in it growing up. I remember when I was really young, I had one of those box cameras and always enjoyed just shooting. But I guess my first, SLR cameras probably, I got just out of high school, and I would take photos of friends and just carry a camera with me just as a hobby and, make prints and things like that. That was my first camera. And then my first First real pro camera, I think one summer I decided, I was going to move into this profession a little bit after spending a lot of time in front of the camera, I figured I had a pretty good eye for it. And I thought it would be some fun to try and keep me skiing. So I bought a camera and started shooting and then, spent that a winter kind of half being a pro skier and half being, trying to start to shoot. And, that was kinda how I got into this business. First outdoor commercial shoot Actually, my first outdoor commercial shoot was for one of my ski sponsors for Elan Skis. So at the time, I was skiing competitively for Elan. And I had a small portfolio of images. So I basically went to them and said, Hey, here's some of my photos that I'm shooting myself and they're like, Oh, great. Do you want to shoot something for us? So it was a natural progression because I already had my foot in the door and had good connections in the industry. It was a pretty easy move for me, fortunately, so that was, having like I said, having the connections in the outdoor industry and in the ski industry definitely helped me move up pretty quickly. Advice I think If you're going to get into it, you really have to develop your skills and become an excellent photographer, not just a good photographer or videographer for that matter. I think you have to be really on top of your game, try to develop your own vision. Don't just copy what's out there, think about what it is, why you want to be a photographer, and what it is you want to photograph, and really try to develop your skills to a high level. And try to find a niche that's gonna work for you. Cause it is a challenging business and definitely not getting any less challenging. I would say also, as a photographer, I think it's important to shoot photo and video to have those dual skills, especially if you can develop good editing skills. I think that's important as well. But yeah, if you can have, a good overall package you can offer to a client, that's definitely a bonus. Books I'd say growing up one series. I liked to read was Carlos Casteneda. I always liked his books growing up. And I think that definitely influenced me. One book I heard recently that I thought was really good was Trevor Noah's Born a Crime. It's really good, it was an audiobook and he was reading it. I just enjoy him so it was cool to hear him read it. Favorite Piece of Gear under $100 Dakine wind stopper gloves. Sean Kearns has a big heart and is a fan favourite so I reached out to him to kick of Season 6. Sean's had a long career covering a lot of territory, pro snowboarder, filmer, manager, and one of the original influencers (that's right I said influencer...) Sean keeps me on my toes and lives with an integrity I've rarely seen in a human being. This season I will be focusing on snowboarding in the 80's 90's and early 2000's because that's the best time in snowboarding in my opinion. Covid means a bunch of episodes will be remote again but not this one which was recorded in Sean's podcast studio on Vancouver Island. Enjoy. I'm really psyched about the show today, not only because my guest Zeke Lau is the type of guy that you can't help but really like right off the bat, but also because he is truly one of the best surfers on the planet. He travels the world to compete in the World Surf League's Championship Tour, where only an elite group of the top 36 surfers in the world get the chance at a world title. The Native Hawaiian is soft spoken and as humble as they come, and at the same time has more drive to be the very best than most people I've ever met. The fire in his belly burns deep, and you can feel it and hear it when he talks about both the road that has gotten him to where he is, and the path ahead to make himself the world champion. Zeke has also done a pretty damn good job at building his personal brand. He's been written about in various major news and media outlets and has landed lucrative sponsorships from companies like Volcom, Dakine, Quicksilver, DC Shoes, Rock Star Energy, and Channel Island Surfboards. Oh yeah, and there must be something in the water in Hawaii, because he grew up rubbing elbows with 2 NFL superstars, one of which just won the superbowl. Enjoy!
