“I think it's terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people's expectations. If you feel safe in the area that you're working in, you're not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you're capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting.”— David Bowie, David Bowie: The Last Five Years On the 1st anniversary of the release of the revised and expanded 2nd edition of Steve's best-selling book Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption--which confusingly is also the 2nd anniversary of the 1st edition's release--we celebrate its success and impact with our very special guest Forrester Research VP & Principal Analyst Sucharita Kodali. Sucharita is not only one of retail's top thought leaders, but she was our very first guest on the podcast back in September of 2022 and she graciously wrote the Foreword to Remarkable Retail's 2nd edition. We unpack some of the key lessons from the book and take stock of Steve and Sucharita's predictive prowess. We also wonder aloud about whether there is complacency setting in among too many retailers, if a "collapse of the unremarkable middle" is inevitable and whether certain oft talked about "innovations" are victims of the hype cycle. But first examine the retail news of the week that caught our attention, including trying to be glass is half full on JC Penney's new strategy to "love the customers that love us." We then move on to marvel at Shein's stratospheric $100 billion valuation, before weighing in on whether the Neiman Marcus Group's new partnership is rather Farfetched (see what we did there?). We close with our take on what to make of Walmart's bold moves to deal with trucking shortages. Note: The John Oliver "This Week Tonight" segment referenced in the episode can be found here. And don't forget to check out our bonus episode recapping this year's Shoptalk conference, recorded live from high above the Vegas Strip. News: Last week was the last week for Toontown as we knew it. The entire land has now closed and will reopen sometime next spring with a complete renovation. The week leading up to the closure saw a lot of guests getting in their last visit before it turns into something quite new and refreshed. This is the first time that we are aware of that an entire land has been closed for a remodel as extensive as this since the New Fantasyland in the early 80's. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ Encanto fans can now meet Mirabel in a new location at the resort. Mirabel's meet and greet has moved from the Paradise Garden area of Disney California Adventure, where she was located during the Festival of the Holidays, to Zocalo Park in Frontierland. The lines to meet her have been long, so be prepared to wait a bit if you want to get a picture with her. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ One of our Weeklyteers will be very excited at this next piece of news! Tinker Bell has returned to Pixie Hollow, the area between Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and the hub. Tinker Bell has not been in her hollow since sometime in 2020 before the closure of the parks. This is a welcome addition to the meet and greet lineup and is sure to be popular. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ Captain Marvel must be on a mission elsewhere as the jet for her meet and greet has been removed from the Hollywood Pictures Backlot. The area is now behind constructions walls. Who knows what this location will become in the future. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ The new shop in Fantasyland that took over the old Heraldry shop has opened. Merlin's Marvelous Miscellany opened this past week. The details around this cozy shop are the real star here and are a must stop for any Sword in the Stone fans! – https://www.micechat.com/316633-abracadabra-merlins-marvelous-miscellany-opens-at-disneyland/ Disneyland continues to work on infrastructure for the nighttime entertainment in both parks. The two Ficus trees in the courtyard of Pirates of the Caribbean are being taken out due to disease. We can't do this without your support. And, we want to thank our partner, Forrester's Sucharita Kodali, who is here with us today to talk about the findings. News: MiceChat got some more aerial photos of the resort this week and showed off some of the ongoing construction. Before taking to the skies, hand washing stations have been spotted just inside the gates at Disneyland before the entrance tunnels to Main Street. It seems like there is a lot of work underway to prepare for an eventual reopening. The bridge to Frontierland is almost complete, with the land’s entrance sign about to be re-installed. The last of the “french fry” rocks at the entrance to Tomorrowland have been removed and are in the process of being cleared away. The Snow White Facade has been completed and the scaffolding has been removed. The new administrative building behind Cars Land looks almost complete. Gondolas are still missing from the Pal-A-Round and the swings have been removed from the Silly Symphony Swings. With all of this work happening, the parks should look great when they reopen to the public! – https://www.micechat.com/270189-disneyland-update-spooky-skies-over-an-empty-kingdom/ With Orange County being removed from the purple status last week, restaurants in Downtown Disney have begun seating guests at 25% capacity indoors. In Marvel News, Scarlett Johansson to get $15 MILLION Dollars for Black Widow Solo Film. WORLD OF DISNEY NEWS - The new section along with the signage Debuted this past weekend and we could not get over the lines outside the store just to go in and get a look. Announced earlier this week, As of October 10th, the Disneyland Resort's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, Storytellers Cafe, discontinued the à la carte option in favor of an all-buffet establishment. Breakfast & Brunch served daily from 7am - 2pm, and Dinner Served 4:30 pm - 10pm. While closed from 2pm - 4:30pm. We also learned this week that Cuties, known for their orange-like clementines, has become the Official Citrus Fruit of the Disneyland Resort. This new partnership will bring Cuties to many fruit carts and counter service dining locations starting this Fall. In Downtown Disney News, Disney confirmed on Wednesday that they have officially pulled the plug on the New Luxury Hotel that was Planned for Downtown Disney. However, the area will remain focused on shopping, dining, and entertainment. No word as of yet on if the old favorites like Rainforest Cafe, ESPN Zone and The Movie Theater will return or if new ones will emerge. As you all know, the new 6,500-space parking structure is currently under construction near the Mickey & Friends structure at the Disneyland Resort. This week we found out that along with the new Parking structure, there will be a new pedestrian bridge over Magic Way. This new bridge will connect visitors from the parking structure—over Magic Way— to the rest of the resort, allowing guests the option to stroll through the Downtown Disney District to the theme parks' Main Entrance. In addition, the new bridge eliminates the foot traffic crossing the street at Disneyland Drive and Magic Way, providing not only convenience but also greater pedestrian safety and better traffic circulation. Set to be completed next year, these parking and transportation enhancements—along with other existing parking options throughout the resort area—are designed to dramatically improve parking and traffic flow. The new parking structure is expected to significantly speed up guest arrival by providing a 60 percent increase in the number of access lanes and by adding parking capacity on the west side of the resort. In addition, the tram boarding area will be reconfigured to enhance the transportation experience for guests parking at both the new structure and Mickey & Friends. Megan and Kris talk about the recent updated to security at Disneyland and what this means for you. Disneyland Security Updates In a nutshell, the security checkpoints have been moved from the courtyard between Disneyland and California Adventure to just outside the Mickey & Friends parking structure. There are also now security checkpoints on the perimeter of Downtown Disney. These changes have made going through security faster and smoother and allows them to be more thorough in their searches. This also means that Downtown Disney is now within the bounds of security and therefore more protected. Finally, it also means that they've rerouted the walking route from the Mickey & Friends parking structure. Instead of walking down Magic Way to Disneyland Drive to get into the parks, you'll now have to walk a little further taking Downtown Drive through the parking lot for Downtown Disney ending up at the security checkpoint between ESPN Zone and Rainforest Cafe. It's a little longer of a walk but it's also more protected. Probably better just to take the tram. :) Note: We've covered navigating Disneyland Security in Episode 65 which includes tips on getting through fast and being considerate to those waiting in line with you.
