Episode 184 : Five Years Of Fueled By Hops Nick is back for a yearly check-in with the Fueled By Hops crew, Nick and Ryan! Ryan tells us the REAL story of how Fueled By Hops got started and we reminisce about the history of the group. Growth and community was the next step and Ryan goes through how the group expanded and what caused the glassware and festival beginnings. We dive deeper into the festivals next and really expand on how Fueled By Hops moved into the world of the great themed beer festival. Next up we tackle the insanity of the pandemic and how Fueled By Hops pivoted to survive through the craziest time in everyone's life. Nick and Ryan break down Drink The Cookie Table 1 and how Nick almost got his ass kicked by a pro wrestler. Moral of the story, “always have an extra jockey box!” The Best Brunch ever is up next and man, what a party that was. The stories from this one are mostly positive but the credit card fraud is definitely a stand out. We then talk at length about Trick R Treat at Ill Will next and Ryan drops some knowledge about the beer list at their festivals. As we move into the upcoming events, we talk about Let's Be Blunt and then looking forward to Drink The Cookie Table 3 at Union Brothers Brewing in Zelienople. At the end we cut it short due to Nick's need to pee but we're back baby! Can't wait to see you next week! Thanks again for listening!

LBHS Podcast (Ep16) – Justin Powers: Darlington Polo Club On episode 16 of the Little Beaver Historical Society Podcast, we talk with Justin Powers about the history and current state of play of the world renowned Darlington Polo Club.     Darlington Polo Club Photo: Darlington Polo Club, c. May 2018. As Justin Powers describes it, the Darlington Polo Club is "America's oldest 'under the lights' polo team! A Western Pennsylvania tradition since 1937."  The club kicks off its season each year with the "Friday Night Lights Bob Lackner Memorial Polo Match" - on the Friday before the Darlington Days community celebration begins. The Darlington Polo Club History, as told by Glenn Watterson III: The Club began playing in the summer of 1937 when Cliff Braden and other interested fans retrieved a ball from under a car at a game in Zelienople. They began playing the sport in Darlington in a very primitive fashion. Their mounts were plow horses. They used gasoline cans for goal posts and lit the field with a series of floodlights hung from the surrounding trees. The founders of the club would be surprised at the advancements the club has made since it humble beginnings. In recent years, the club has purchased a lighting system that was used to light the local high school football stadium. Most players ride athletic Thoroughbreds with a few preferring the Quarter Horse and Appaloosa Breeds. Quickness and agility are the most sought after traits in a polo horse. The Darlington Polo Clubs home season begins in mid May and runs to the end of August. We play our home games at 8:00 P.M. on Friday nights earning the team the name " Night Riders". We play competitive teams from Canada, Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Virginia. Many of today's high goal professional players have graced the Darlington field early in their careers. The atmosphere at a Friday night game is a mix of hometown sports and backyard festival with a healthy dose of horse and family thrown in for good measure. The local Lion's Club serves up French fries, funnel cakes and other ballpark treats from their concession stand. Most of the players' families are pressed into service as ticket takers, referees, and grooms. Friends and families turn out with lawn chairs and picnic baskets to cheer for the home team. The Darlington Polo Club would like to invite you and your family to come and join us each Friday for polo "under the lights."  For more information, check out the club on Facebook at Darlington Polo Club or visit their website.  Episode 16 of the Little Beaver Historical Society Podcast was recorded April 12, 2022 at Greersburg Academy in Darlington, Pa. Nick talks about Shubrew's can club. Alex talks about his experience at Eleventh Hour. Fueled by Hops takes over the conversation with #waxwednesday and #TIPAthursday and then we get into a very important discussion on glassware. Alex learns some things about glassware and the glassware community. After glassware, Nick introduces a segment about what you bring to dinner at a friend's house and this basically drives the rest of the episode. Obviously we lean on the “craft beer” aspect but this conversation keeps us guessing the whole time. We wrap up this episode with a shoutout to Hop Culture. (Juicy Brews 420 coming soon!) In 2008, Fiore Moletz noticed that there was a gap in the Pittsburgh culinary scene. The city needed a gourmet burger restaurant that used high-quality beef and ingredients served in a friendly, hometown atmosphere. There was only one problem. He didn’t have the money to get it off the ground. It took two years of saving, plenty of hard work, and finding the right partners to finally open Burgh’ers in 2010. Several years later, Fiore added a second location in Lawrenceville, but he realized that something was missing. The dream of adding craft brews to the menu began when Fiore met his future business partner and head brewer, Neil Glausier, in a chance encounter at a local crawfish boil in Harmony, PA. The two were kindred spirits, and their conversations over food and drink ultimately led to a partnership. In 2017, a full-scale brewery operation was added, and Burgh’ers became Burgh’ers Brewing.Sustainability lies at the heart of Burgh’ers Brewing, and Fiore and Neil take pride in the recognition their business has received for its environmentally sound practices. From the beginning, Fiore set an audacious goal of sourcing virtually all ingredients from within a 200-mile radius. Anyone with a cooking or restaurant background will tell you how incredibly difficult this is to pull off. And their food – an elevated take on American classics – has received its share of awards and recognition, as well. Fiore, head chef, and Neil, head brewer, are two self-taught masters who have honed their skills through persistence, experimentation, and putting in the work. Their collaboration has given us one of the finest burger and beer joints in our region. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Summary: It's the 56th Horse Trading Day celebration in Zelienople BUT the first that John and Rachael knew about! All the more reason to continue our beyond Allegheny County quest!  We learned about horse trading, the parade and tradition of the festival, Zelienople breweries, food and, of course the famous Strand Theater.  Music: Harmony / Zelionople Jazz Band SPONSOR:  Rohrich Honda has gotten acclimated to their Bloomfield community with visits to different businesses. The Jagoffs, and sales manager Larry, test drive different Hondas and learn the reason behind the Rohrich advantage.  Plus, with elite customer service and a dedicated repair team, we learn time after time the reason for their longevity in Pittsburgh. Find out which is your favorite Honda and remember the folks at Rohrich Honda when you are ready for a new ride. Visit www.RohrichHonda.com and experience the difference.   Question of the day: Given the current heat in Pittsburgh, how do YOU describe what 100 degrees feel like?   03:12 Kathleen and Kyle Conway: It is old home week at the Horse Trading Days even though we have never attended! The Conways are here as the organizers as well as major podcast fans! So how do two city-slickers from Bloomfield become planners of Zelionople Horse Trading Days? BTW, they are the very first guests to be interviewed in the brand-spankin' new YaJagoff Podcast tent!  10:59  Erica Shumaker (ShuBrew Brewing Company): Even the Guiness-only Rachael and the “I don't drink citrus-tasting beer” John loved the special edition Horse Trading Days ShuBrew beer concocted by ShuBrew.  The imagery on the cans is the icing on the beer cake!  23:52 Jeremy Czarniak (Executive Director, Strand Theater): The theater has been a Zelienople entertainment icon since it was built in 1914. It went through a major upgrade in 2005 and now is a must-see, must-do stop when in Zelieonople.  But what else is in store for the legendary theater?  36:11 Juliet Wahlenmayer MA, NCC Director of Adventures, Glade Run Adventures Once John figures out what Juliet is actually talking about, things go well. Not only is she the emcee of the Horse Trading Days horse parade, she is part of Glade Run Adventures that utilize horses for recovery and other therapies for humans.  SPONSOR: Rohrich Honda has gotten acclimated to their Bloomfield community with visits to different businesses.
