In this episode, Travis and producer Eric go completely off the rails—in the best way possible—while unpacking the business genius of Dolly Parton. What starts as a conversation about the Country Music Hall of Fame turns into a fascinating breakdown of ownership, publishing rights, long-term thinking, and why saying “no” to Elvis Presley may have been one of the smartest financial decisions in entertainment history. Along the way, they discuss celebrity leverage, podcast growth, plateauing in business, and the value of building something you actually own. On this episode we talk about: Dolly Parton turning down Elvis Presley over publishing rights The long-term value of owning your intellectual property How one business decision created generational wealth The difference between short-term opportunities and long-term ownership Podcast growth, celebrity interviews, and building sustainable momentum Top 3 Takeaways Ownership matters more than hype. Dolly Parton's refusal to give up publishing rights became a decision that paid her for decades. Big opportunities aren't always the right opportunities if they require giving away too much control. Success often grows in plateaus and jumps—consistency and long-term thinking matter more than overnight wins. Notable Quotes “These are my songs. They're like my children. God is not only the author of your story, He's the hero!I have heard it said that we should pray like it depends on God and work like it depends on us. But I find that when I'm working like it depends on me, I rarely pray like it depends on God. Perhaps we also need to figure out what it looks like to work, like it depends on God?

In this episode of the Pain Talk podcast, Maureen Allen explores why pain medications sometimes stop working for people with chronic pain. She explains that chronic pain is not simply a signal from an injured body part but a complex, multidimensional experience created by the nervous system and the brain's interpretation of potential danger. Over time, the nervous system can adapt and become more sensitive, essentially “learning” pain and remaining on high alert. Because of these changes, medications are not just addressing a simple pain signal—they are trying to influence an entire nervous system process that has been reshaped by ongoing pain, which can make traditional pain treatments less effective. The post Episode 78 : Why Don't Pain Medications Work Like They Used to? first appeared on Pain Talk.

I've always been fascinated by questions of religion and spirituality and what they have to offer the educational conversation. Clearly on the big questions of life generally, transformation, meaning, values and purpose they have a lot to say, but educationally we can very quickly find ourselves in the territory of indoctrination. And surely indoctrination is the opposite of good educationThis week I was so happy to chat with Shoukei Matsumoto, a secular Buddhist Monk who is doing amazing work bringing insights from Japanese Buddhist teachings and practices into leadership, economy and organisational development. And in particular his approach integrates a "post-religious" spirituality with practical methodologies for "becoming good ancestors," often mentoring corporate leaders worldwide to create emotionally intelligent and sustainable workplaces.Shoukei is a Buddhist monk, author, and Director of the Living Dharma Centre in Vancouver, Canada, where he is spearheading the revitalization of the organisation as a hub for secular spirituality. He simultaneously serves as a Professor of Practice in the Faculty of Well-being at Musashino University (Tokyo), bridging ancient wisdom and modern society to architect "Ambient Buddhism" – an environmental operating system for a post-religious age.Operating at the intersection of spirituality, technology, and ethics, Shoukei is a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on Leadership (2025-2026) and an alumnus of the Young Global Leaders (2013). In 2025, he was appointed as a Mercator Visiting Professor at the University of Bonn (Germany) to research AI in the human context, and joined the Vatican's Aurora initiative to shape global frameworks for moral innovation in artificial intelligence. With a unique background holding a BA in Philosophy from The University of Tokyo and an MBA from the Indian School of Business, Matsumoto applies innovative management approaches to traditional Buddhist practices. He is the founder of Interbeing Inc. and has launched initiatives such as the Institute for Temple Management. He is the author of the international bestseller 'A Monk's Guide to a Clean House and Mind' (translated into over 20 languages). His latest book, 'Work Like a Monk: How to Connect, Lead and Grow in a Noisy World' (2025) https://www.simonandschuster.co.uk/books/Work-Like-A-Monk/Shoukei-Matsumoto/9781398551749, offers practical guidance on integrating Buddhist principles – such as mindful listening and interconnectedness – into modern life and work.Shoukei's work touches on very relevant topics that we explore on this channel:From "Software" to "An-Yo": How we can stop treating young people as machines to be optimized and instead cultivate "habitats" that allow for their natural flourishing. The Grace of Being Wrong (Kuyo): In a world obsessed with "Known" mastery, how the Buddhist practice of Kuyo can liberate us to embrace the unknown. The "True Person" (Shin-nin) in Dialogue: How mindful listening can unfreeze our words and allow our authentic selves to emerge, especially within the rigid structures of formal education.Useful LinksShoukei's substack: https://www.living-dharma.com/ The Living Dharma Center, Vancouver: https://www.bcc.ca/ldc.html Shoukei's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shoukeim

Jason Berkowitz, a veteran restaurant operator and the founder of Arrow Up Training. Berkowitz shares his "origin story" rooted in a four-generation family of funeral directors, which taught him that true hospitality is about shifting one's ego to support others during their most vulnerable moments. The conversation explores the critical balance between technology and humanity, with Berkowitz arguing that tools like digital scheduling should be used to automate "crappy" tasks so leaders can spend more time on the floor engaging with their teams and guests. He also offers practical advice for independent owners, emphasizing that "organized people work in organized environments" and warning against the common pitfalls of opening a second location without proper systems and project management tools.10 Key Takeaways The Root of Hospitality: True hospitality is the ability to set aside your ego and provide the specific support a person needs in their current emotional state. The "Two Questions" Framework: Every employee needs clear answers to two questions: "What is my job?" and "How am I doing?". Organized Environments Attract Talent: High-quality, organized staff will only stay in environments that are equally organized and have clear structures. Minimal Effective Dose: Training should be designed as the "smallest, shortest way" to deliver necessary information effectively without overwhelming the staff. Work Like an Owner, But Remember You Aren't: Berkowitz advises employees to show maximum autonomy and dedication while remaining humble about who actually owns the business. Automate the "Crappy Stuff": Use technology for scheduling, maintenance, and compliance to free up managers for human-centric hospitality. Proactive vs. Reactive Leadership: Effective COOs and owners should intentionally block out "reactive" modes (like constant email) to focus on proactive training and systems building. The Second Location Sinkhole: Many owners fail when expanding because they don't use data-driven site selection or have a "critical path" project management tool. Strategic Leasing: When expanding, aim for "percentage rent leases" to turn landlords into partners who benefit when the restaurant succeeds. Experience Assets: View operational challenges and "acute stressors" not as problems, but as assets that make the business more "anti-fragile" and stronger over time.

I'In this episode, I chat with Swedish tech entrepreneur Jonas Birgersson about his radical plan to apply the architecture of the internet—packet switching, buffering, and decentralized routing—to the electricity grid. We explore how his “EnergyNet” concept uses power electronics to create galvanically separated microgrids that stop cascading failures and allow neighbors to share power directly. It is a mind-bending look at how treating electrons like data could lead to unlimited energy for a low fixed fee. This is a public episode. Have an episode suggestion? Text us!In this Mindset Monday, Matt drops a handful of hard-earned lessons from the last month, pulled straight from the notes app, the place where the real thoughts live before the world distracts you out of them.He breaks down why boundaries are one of the most misunderstood concepts in relationships, and why they rarely fix an emotionally immature person, but often do deliver the clarity you have been avoiding. Then he tackles a brutal question for anyone stuck in justification mode. If the behavior is working, why do you keep trying to cut back, manage it, or quit in private? From there, Matt offers a permission slip a lot of people need. There is a difference between processing your pain and keeping it alive. Healing matters, but constantly revisiting the same trauma can become its own kind of trap. And finally, he goes after a sacred cow, acceptance. Yes, acceptance can save your sanity and build resilience, but it can also turn into complacency and keep you tolerating chaos you should not have to survive. If you are in recovery, in a relationship affected by addiction, or on the other side trying to rebuild your life, this episode is a gut check in the best way. Clarity over comfort, wisdom over coping, and growth that actually moves you forward.Find video clips and full length video from this episode on YouTube and our other social media pages! On the web:www.twfo.comSupport the Show:Buy Us a Coffee!Online Program: www.independentlystrong.comSoberlink Device:www.soberlink.com/wheelsCheck out our blog:https://twfo.com/blogFollow us on TikTok:https://tiktok.com/@twfo_coupleFollow us on Instagram:https://instagram.com/twfo_couple/Follow us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/TWFOCoupleFollow us on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@twfo_coupleFind Taylor Counseling Group:https://taylorcounselinggroup.com/Donate to Counseling for the Future Foundation:Donate Here

Faith without works is...DEAD. This revelation has hit me fresh in this season. I was reflecting on all God has called me to, and reading through James 2 and Hebrews 11, and the Lord poured out so much timely revelation for me to mediate on. And one key thing that stuck out to me, was where James says you show me your faith, and I'll show you my faith BY my works...Noah moving in holy fear, working because of what he believed God told him...And the other countless verses and accounts we'll talk about, has all been sticking out and convicting me to show my faith more through my obedient steps and not just my words. I pray this inspires you as we go into the new year. Dedicate your steps. Protect your ever evolving mind. And whatever God has called you to...work at it like you believe it's true. Love you guys, and Happy New Year! - JET
