There's a lot going on in the local beer scene, but unfortunately, we also have some sad news. Two beloved spots in Buffalo's craft community are closing their doors.Illumination Meadery Closing: Operating out of Mortalis Brewing's Niagara Street taproom, Illumination Meadery has announced their closure due to rising costs, shifting demand, and life changes for the owners. They'll have a final sendoff at CollaBEERation Fest on April 5, and until then, you can still grab some of their meads on tap or in bottles.12 Gates Brewing Closing: After nine years, 12 Gates Brewing in Williamsville has also closed. Their announcement reflects on the incredible memories made with their loyal customers. Their sister location in Ellicottville closed last summer, making this an especially tough goodbye for the local beer scene.On a brighter note, here's what's happening in the beer world:Brickyard Brewing's Stained Glass Vol. 1 Returns: This 8.8% Belgian Quad, aged in rum and bourbon barrels, is now available in 375ml corked and caged bottles. Limited to just eight cases, it's available at Brickyard's Lewiston taproom and select retailers.4 The Ward Collab from Old First Ward Breweries: Resurgence, Briarbrothers, Old First Ward, and Frequentem Brewing have teamed up for 4 The Ward, a collab supporting the Old First Ward Community Center. Running now through St. Patrick's weekend!Hofbrauhaus March Märzen Tapping: On March 6, Hofbrauhaus is teaming up with Witches of the Moonlight for their March Märzen release. Expect live music, a parade, a dance performance, and a rich, malty Märzen on tap. 10% of designated meals go to the YWCA of the Niagara Frontier.CollaBEERation Festival First Collab Beers Announced: The Powerhouse hosts CollaBEERation Fest on April 5, and the first round of collab beers has been revealed. What a wild and impressive ride of a career. When I went in to chat to Sunny Gilbert at the Hofbrauhaus, I did not expect to hear about cooking whole crocodiles in a bread oven in China. A career as a chef can certainly take you places. Sunny hadn't planned on being a chef, but once he got into a kitchen as a kitchenhand, he was quickly hooked, loving the adrenalin rush of service and wanting to push himself as quickly as possible. From starting his career in Darwin and taking the crocodiles to China and so on, to moving to Melbourne, working in hotels, owning his own restaurant in Docklands and eventually becoming head chef at MoVida next door, Sunny has had so much hospitality experience. He brings all that knowledge to the Hofbrauhaus, a Melbourne institution which has been around for 56 years. Sunny is executive chef and owner of this incredible place that's sees chefs crumb to order hundreds of schnitzels on a Saturday night and where the tables in the upstairs beer hall next door are reinforced, “because of the dancing.” The Hofbrauhaus is a good time and Sunny is there for it, a firm believer in the goodness of hospitality and the importance of nurturing the next generation. I loved this conversation and I'll see you up on the tables in the beer hall after I've eaten a schnitzel and had a Bavarian lager.

Vinny from Hofbrauhaus joined the guys to talk about the Oktoberfest festivities going on this season.  GIVEAWAY. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike gave the latest on Nick Bosa and the probability of him playing on Sunday against the Steelers. Mike thinks the Steelers win the game no matter what – whether Bosa is active or not. Mike talked about the precedent being set here and how it could be very different for different players. Mike talked about how much it will benefit Matt Canada for Kenny Pickett to take off in 2023. Mike's Super Bowl prediction is Chiefs-49ers, in which he admitted to going chalk on both sides. Mike has the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Chiefs.    BREAKING: Nick Bosa has signed with the 49ers and will likely play Sunday.

Beer 1: I Seen The Light - Mango Helles Lager (Rock Bottom, Roundabout, Helicon) Kinda like a crafty version of IC Light Mango. Beer 2: Basileus - Basil Saison (Hop Farm, War Streets Brewery, Leaning Cask) Lots of basil flavor, dry and refreshing saison. Beer 3: Red Bines - Amber Ale (Dancing Gnome, Hofbrauhaus, Penn Brewery) Great drinking, solid red beer. Lots of malt flavor and well balanced. Beer 4: Open Sesame - Brown Session Ale (Spoonwood, Pittsburgh Bottleshop, Church BrewWorks) Possibly the best beer of the festival. Very dark color, but still extremely light and crushable. We loved this one Beer 5: Gluteus Minimus - Gluten-Free Tulsi Tea Saison (Aurochs, East End, Cinderlands) Alex was a huge fan. Lots of tea flavor and each brewery's style came through in this beer. Beer 6: Watermelon Farmhouse Ale - Blended Farmhouse Ale (Allegheny City, Strange Roots) Definitely had a lot of watermelon flavor but still sour. Beer 7: Milton the Toaster Style - Toaster Pastry Stout (Hitchhiker, Southern Tier, Rivertowne) This one was a great balance of stout and the smores pop tart flavor. Beer 8: Get Out of Tahn - Dry Hopped Norwegian Farmhouse Ale (Grist House, Cobblehaus, CoStar) More pronounced hop flavors but still had the farmhouse character. Dry and light drinking. Beer 9: El Collabo - Brett IPA (Couch, Abjuration, Eleventh Hour) We weren't too keen on this one, but we do appreciate the expansion of the style usage. The brett didn't really shine through in this one. Beer 10: A Mind Full of Weeds - Cream Ale made with Bloody Butcher Corn (Mindful, Full Pint) Very much a cream ale. As a late entry in the day we didn't really get the full effect. Studio Beer #1: Konkey Dong 4UP - Hoof Hearted Brewery (Quadruple Dry-Hopped Triple IPA 9.5%) Thanks Sean P! for the share! Sara didn't like a triple, surprise! Nick liked the beer, Alex found it to be easy to drink. From there the conversation went to the new releases we tried this week and beer trades that we'll have coming up. We're going to have a new segment called the brewery of the week, where we'll highlight a beer from them and focus on something outside of Pittsburgh. Shoutout to our social media follows!
