Today the gang sits with legendary brewer Sean Lawson, founder of Lawson's Finest Liquids. About this episode: Sean talks about his distribution arm, The Beer Guy, which has started distributing an artisanal gin and tonic made by Bar Hill. The company is open to adding other non-competitive products such as wine, other beers, or spirits to their distribution arm in the future, with the focus for now on the gin and tonic Artesano cocktail. They may also consider distributing craft beer from other breweries that are complementary to their brand. The conversation touches on the brewery's ranking in the craft beer industry and the challenges of starting and growing a craft brewery. ================================= Watch on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/beernetradio Podcast feeds: https://www.beernetradio.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5mk5ITn9bXu1KOvx21QzEb Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beernet-radio/id1591940567 ================================= About Beer Business Daily publisher Harry Schuhmacher joins his editors and other guests once a week as they grok the beer industry issues of the day. -Podcast Hotline: Text or call Harry in confidence at:‪ (262) 345-2501‬ -Audio/Video feeds at https://linktr.ee/beernet -Articles referenced at beernet.com -Socials: @beerbizdaily #beernews #beerindustry #beer --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beernetradio/message

Vermont has the most breweries per capita. But the more beer they brew, the more they have to deal with their wastewater. Caleb Henderson of Winooski asked us this: “Breweries and cideries were in the news a few years ago for the wastewater. How are they mitigating their waste now? Has it improved?”Reporter Howard Weiss-Tisman learns how breweries — and communities — are grappling with this issue in different ways. As Earth Day approaches, this week's Beer Sessions Radio welcomes two environmental defenders in the brewing world — Michael Kowalski from Berkshire Mountain Distillers and Sean Lawson from Lawson's Finest Liquids. They will be coaching us on how to take the waste out of getting wasted!Opening the episode, Sean presents his pioneering Green is Grand project before spilling all about the Sunshine Canopy, Vermont's largest free-standing solar power structure, and its ribbon-cutting event on April 22. Michael joins the conversation with the “wasting not and wanting none” approach at Berkshire, which involves repurposing their used ingredients, remodeling their cooling system, and reusing their wastewater. The discussion then took a citrusy detour for you to take a sip of Sean's Double Sunshine and Michael's Grey Lock Gin.Do stay sober as we close the show with Sean emphasizing the holistic mentality when it comes to sustainable brewing, and Michael diving deeper into water and energy conservation. Finally, the gang comes down to a naming competition for the canopy, with top contenders currently being: Jimmy's “Curious George” and Sean's “Store of Sunshine.”  Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Wednesday January 26 2022 - and yesterday the Detroit Free Press called 2022 the year of the craft lager. We'll see if they're right. Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com First - kudos to Four Quarters in Winooski, VT for turning their outdoor patio into a skating rink. It's a great use of a space during the coldest months of the year in this area. You can check out the video of the outdoor skating area (complete with a fire pit) at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=639426120845987&extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-AN_GK0T-GK1C and check out 4Quarters at https://www.4qbc.com/ But - I found out - they're not the only one doing it! Nope - there's Fifty West Brewing https://fiftywestbrew.com/ice-skating/, Schram Haus Brewery http://schramhausbrewery.com/icerink/, and Throwback Brewery (whose was unfortunately damaged, but re-opening Friday) https://www.throwbackbrewery.com/blog/therink/ all have skating on site. Brewery Hockey leagues anyone? When you re-rank all the new wines, it shakes things up a bit - and turns out you might be able to get a great value as a result of the new rankings from Wine Spectator. I've frequently gone back to some advice from a friend of mine that the best bottle of wines often only costs around $15 - $25 dollars. Sounds like that almost still holds true as The Top 10 Wine Values of 2021 rankings meet three criteria: They have rated 90 points or higher on Wine Spectator's 100-point scale. They cost $40 or less and provide three other things - quality, price, and availability. They're wines with solid track records that are good representatives of their regions. Get the rundown and put together your shopping list at https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/25/10-best-wine-values-from-wine-spectators-new-rankings/ I bet this will be talked about at the Naples Winter Wine Fest this weekend! And this time of year is when IPAs are most popular - so let's look at eight highly rated Double IPA's and see how they rank when it's a blind taste testing panel. Dirt Wolf and Florida man are the only two I haven't tried yet, but by the rankings, there are no losers on this list. Even the 8th ranked Double IPA is described as a well-made beer that's complex, flavorful, and easy to drink - and it seems to get better from there! However, it was a smashing success for Lawson's Finest Liquids out of Waitsfield, Vermont as they took two top spots! At number 3 was Second Fiddle Double Fiddle, number 2 was Bell's Hopslam and at number 1 was Lawson's Finest Double Sunshine. https://uproxx.com/life/high-rated-double-ipas-blind-taste-tested-and-ranked/ Next Time: Coming up Another Round, the special interview editions of The Boozebuddy Update are tentatively scheduled to start on February 5th. The beer has Simcoe, El Dorado, and Cascade hops. It comes in at 8.7% ABV and should reach everywhere inside the above states through the end of February. It's the first specialty brew of 2022 for Lawson's out of Waitsfield, VT - and one that they're asked about all the time in the taproom. Sales of Cognac went up by 31% in 2021. In the US alone, sales jumped by 11%, China had the biggest jump with sales in that country jumping by more than 56%! Part of the increase is being attributed to a five-year suspension on tariffs that the US and European Union agree to last year. Cognac and its fans are celebrating a real recovery in the industry as a result! https://cheersonline.com/2022/01/19/cognac-sales-climbed-31-in-2021/ In a move that's obviously a response to the craft Beer's #MeToo moment, The Mass Brewers Guild has partnered with Speakfully, an anonymous third-party reporting system. The platform provides employees a safe and anonymous way to report toxic work culture, harassment, or give general feedback about their overall workplace. It also gives employers real-time data and analytics to promote proactive action. Employees and Employers can communicate privately through Speakfully's secure messaging portal - protecting people's identities. The program is an opt-in for members of the guild and is one of many offerings including additional employee law and HR education, as well as bystander and de-escalation training for staff. Speakfully was founded as a direct result of inappropriate workplace interactions experienced by CEO and co-founder, Jana Morrin. What started as a simple documentation process led to the larger idea that employees need a private and secure platform to voice concerns without fear of retribution. As the brewery has grown in the last few years they've played to their strengths, IPA, a light beer aimed at non-craft drinkers, and hard seltzer smoothies.  It has helped the brewery gain recognition, not only in their state but beyond its borders.  It seems like every conversation is going to be about COVID-19 at some point, because it's just ever present on the mind. Get vaccinated. When we recorded this in July the CDC had not yet updated guidance, and so host John Holl started off by talking about how things were opening up and how the brewery was getting back into the swing of things with sales and planning for the grand re-opening of their new taproom, which barely had time for a proper first grand opening.  Max spoke to the show over Zoom from the brewery in Muskego. This Episode is sponsored by:BriessBriess is the leading supplier of specialty malt to craft brewers.  They offer the broadest product line in the industry, including a wide range of roasted malts that add flavor, color, and character to beer.  Their experienced operators handcraft every batch of roasted malt to ensure the product you get is consistent.  Check out BrewingwithBriess.com for beer recipes using roasted malt.  NZ HopsNZ Hops, the co-operative of Master Hop Growers are a passionate collective of farms dedicated to innovation and sustainability. Show notes from John Holl: As we've talked about on the show in the past, there are serious conversations and allegations happening in the beer industry, specifically, these days, around the treatment of women. Sadly, many of these stories are not new, but a lot of them have not been publicly talked about, until a few weeks ago when women started sharing their stories on social media.  There's been a lot of talk, hopefully a lot of listening, some changes, and work towards meaningful action.  Laurie Porter is my guest this week. She's the co-founder of Smog City, a brewery with several locations in Southern California that has helped shaped the Los Angeles Beer Scene over the last decade. She's on brewing industry advisory boards and guilds, and has focused, in her words, on every aspect of her company except the brewing.  But this week Smog City is set to release Total Boss, a red IPA made by the women of the brewery to spark a conversation about misogyny, sexism, assault, and more happening in the beer space.  Porter has spent a lot of time thinking about this and from the brewery's beginning has tried to focus efforts to make Smog City a safe place and one where people are happy to work and feel like they can do their jobs without fear.  Still, these last few weeks have gotten her thinking about where things are, where they were, and where they can be." This Episode is sponsored by:BriessBriess is the leading supplier of specialty malt to craft brewers. Zack Adams was invited onto the podcast this week to talk about his Grodziskie, a 3.2% smoked ale that he brewed with help and guidance from Live Oak Brewing, and a beer that utilizes specialty smoked malt from a local farm. Before all that, however, we spend time talking about how his taproom has evolved and adapted since COVID-19 began. Adams, the owner and brewer of Fox Farm Brewery in Salem, Connecticut also fills us in on the brewery's spontaneous beer program and the developing house culture that will have a prominent place in the tasting experience. Recorded via zoom just after the 2021 4th of July holiday weekend, Adams opens up on inspiration and making beers that appeal to his palate and how he brings drinkers along for the journey. If you're a longtime BAOS listener, you'll know that we really stay true to the "And Other Shit" in our name, but to be honest, we haven't really dabbled much outside of beer in the past year or so. It was time to fix that. We heard about Doctor Nick's Amazing Man Stuff back in January and Cee has been using their beard products daily since, so it was great to have Co-Founder Nick Phelps on the pod for a chat. Cee and Nick chopped it up about their Beard Beer products inspired by classic IPAs and Stouts, they ran through the full story on how the company came to be, how they procure all their high-end essential oils (not cheap fragrance oils) and packaging in the US, and they even got into their upcoming Brewmaster Series, where they'll be making collaborative Beard Beer in conjunction with breweries like Tree House, Lawson's Finest Liquids, Vitamin Sea, Trillium and more. Nick crushed a Maine Brewing Co. Lunch IPA and a Vitamin Sea Beachfire Stories stout, while Cee got into a Mikkeller Fresh Start IPA and 5e Baron Lucide Dream breakfast stout. Cheers! With beautiful weather hitting the east coast this week, Beer Sessions Radio is gearing up for spring and summer with Lawson’s Finest. This week, Jimmy catches up with Sean Lawson from Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Waitsfield, VT, and Katherine Kyle, formerly the longtime general manager of Blind Tiger Ale House in New York City. The conversation kicks off around Sip of Sunshine, which has grown tremendously popular since it launched a few years ago. Sean explains the process of scaling up, and where the magic comes into play during small, artisanal production. Sean and Katherine then get into a lively conversation about hops, and Sean gives us a great preview of the Super Sessions series. With the warm weather getting everyone excited for spring, Katherine and Sean both give us an update on how their breweries fared in the cold, and what exciting plans they have for customers looking to enjoy beer all summer long. Sean also introduces us to the “little cousin” of Sip of Sunshine, the Little Sip IPA! Finally, the gang wanders down a sweet sap rabbit hole before shouting out a few great summer classics they look forward to trying this year.Photo Courtesy of Sean Lawson.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Switchback Brewing is going to smoke all the beers Switchback Brewing founder Bill Cherry has a passion for smoked beers.  He approaches smoke from a culinary standpoint, not to overwhelm the beer with smoky notes but to add depth and character to the beer while showing smoke as a legitimate flavor component. Through their Flynn of Fire Smoked Beer Initiative Switchback shows off the world of smoked malts.  Their "Smoke-ometer" shows you what percentage of smoked malt is in each beer and you may be surprised at the subtleties of a beer with 25% of the malt bill smoked.  However, Switchback's top-selling beer is smoke-free.  Switchback Ale is not only the brewery's top seller but also the #1 selling beer in Vermont.  The beer was developed as a "flavor concept" and doesn't necessarily adhere to any specific style.  It's a drinkable amber-ish beer that blurs the lines between complexity and simplicity. We also discuss Switchback's upcoming 20th anniversary and the decision to make the brewery 100% employee owned. Although I went into the show a smoke hater I left with a greater appreciation for smoky beers and what can be down with smoked malt.  I'm still not on board for in in-your-face Rauchbier, but I'm down with what Switchback is doing. Although the vast majority produce way less than this, the number was increased from 2 million barrels in 2011 to reflect the growth of the industry. For reference, the Treehouse Brewing Company has the capacity to produce about 150,000 barrels per year at its current facility which opened in 2017, whereas the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams and one of the largest craft breweries in the US brewed about 5.3 million barrels in 2019. Additionally, an independent brewer is one in which less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. According to the American Addiction Centers and Alcohol.org, the use of alcohol has been normalized in almost every culture, but it should be noted that alcohol is a toxin, and regular use of the can lead to medical, mental health, and social problems...In the U.S., alcohol is the most commonly used substance of abuse among young people...Individuals ages 12-20 account for 11% of all the alcohol consumed, more than 90% of which is consumed by binge drinking. Current drinking culture can make it difficult for parents and young people to fully understand the severity and potential consequences of alcohol abuse. Teens may drink because of peer pressure, experimentation, stress, or other reasons...this risky behavior can lead to an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and heavy alcohol use in the teenage years can cause lasting cognitive deficits and alter the course of brain development as the brain continues to mature into a person’s early 20’s. Other dangers associated with underage drinking include impaired judgment, which can lead to violent behavior, and drinking and driving, increased risk of carrying out or suffering from physical or sexual assault, injuries, increased risk of later alcohol problems, and death. The CDC estimates that alcohol plays a role in the deaths of 4,358 individuals under age 21 each year on average. These IPAs have a high alcohol content over 7.5% and are typically described as having intense fruit flavors and aromas, a soft body, and smooth mouthfeel. They often have an opaque color with substantial haze and have less perceived bitterness than traditional IPAs but are always massively hop forward. This emphasis on late hopping, especially dry hopping, with hops with tropical fruit qualities lends the specific ‘juicy’ character for which this style is known. The New England IPA has undoubtedly been the hottest trend in craft over the past few years with many small and larger craft brewers trying their hand at some version of a hazy IPA-style beer. In 2018, its first year as a competition category at the Great American Beer Festival, the “Juicy or Hazy Double IPA” style garnered more entries than any other style category - dethroning the American IPA as most entered beer for the first time in 16 years. For more on the New England IPA phenomenon, see “How the Hazy New England IPA Conquered America” (Thrillist, 2018), the “New England IPA” style sheet from Craft Beer, “‘Juicy or Hazy’ Ales Debut in BA Beer Style Guide, Representing New England IPAs” (CraftBeer.com, 2018), “The New England Style IPA is The Anti-IPA” (CraftBeer.com, 2017), “What Are New England IPAs (NEIPAs)?” (Beer Cartel, 2018), and “What the Hell Happened to the West Coast IPA?” (Gear Patrol, 2019) 44:00 - Generally speaking, the west coast IPAs that pioneered the American style highlight the bitterness of hops over everything where east coast IPAs strike a balance between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Whereas west coast IPAs are dryer and have an aggressive bitterness, an east coast IPA is sweeter on the front end, which fades into bitterness, thanks to the hops. As an offshoot of the east coast style, New England IPAs are distinctly juicy, as in they can sometimes taste like you took a bite into a tropical fruit or citrus with the rind still on. Previous holdouts, who due to the early dominance of the west coast style thought that “craft” and “bitter” were synonymous, as well as newbies to the craft beer scene, have typically found it somewhat easier to get in on the game through the New England IPAs more approachable flavors, which has increased overall interest in craft beer. - For more see “East Coast IPA vs West Coast IPA: What's the Difference?” (Gear Patrol, 2020)49:39 - See “How The Rise Of Craft Beer Is Contributing To The Decline Of The Homebrewing Lifestyle” (Forbes, 2016)49:43 - Counterweight Brewing Company49:45 - DuVig Brewing Company49:49 - In January 1985 there were 100 craft breweries open and operating in the US, including early craft pioneers like Sierra Nevada and the Boston Beer Company, by 1996 the number of craft breweries had grown to 1000, and 50 different categories were recognized and judged at the Great American Beer Festival. The first “American Craft Beer Week” took place in 2006, and in 2014 craft beer production volume saw an 18% increase over the previous year with IPA taking over the overall production lead for the first time. By 2016 there were over 5000 craft breweries operating in the US, by 2019 there were over 8,000. In 2019 craft breweries captured 13.6% of the overall US beer market with sales totaling over $29 billion dollars, up from just slightly over $10 billion in 2011, and Ken Grossman, who founded Sierra Nevada back in 1980, has a net worth of $1 billion dollars. - For more see “Beer History” (Craft Beer), “National Beer Sales & Production Data” (Brewers Association), “Retail dollar sales of craft beer in the United States from 2011 to 2019” (Statista), and the Forbes profile of Ken Grossman53:16 - See “2020 Zymurgy’s Best Beers in America Results” a list compiled by Zymurgy, which is the bi-monthly magazine of the American Homebrewers Association56:42 - See “The History of Beer” (Craft Beer & Brewing), “Who Invented Beer?” (History.com), and the “History of beer” Wikipedia entry57:00 - See “An ancient thirst for beer may have inspired agriculture, Stanford archaeologists say” (Stanford News, 2018), “The History Of Beer And Why Civilization As We Know It May Have Started Because Of It” (All That’s Interesting, 2016)58:49 - See the “Stout” Wikipedia entry and various style sheets from Craft Beer for American Stout, American Imperial Stout, Irish-Style Dry Stout, English-Style Oatmeal Stout, English-Style Sweet Stout (Milk Stout)This episode was recorded remotely via Zoom in December 2020The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti

Brewery Ommegang brings trendy new beers to their classical Belgian-style offerings If you're as old as dirt like Brian and me then there's a good chance Brewery Ommegang was part of your craft beer journey.  The late 90s to the early 2000s where was when I really started to explore craft beer.  Mainly because I got my tail out of Arkansas where there was a bit more to explore. Ommegang's estery and spicy beers we're a welcome change of pace from the typical Ambers, Golden Ales, and too-bitter-for-me IPAs of the time.  I love Belgian beers.  Back in the old days, a brewery could offer just 3-4 beers and be successful.  Times have changed, and Ommegang is well aware of those changes.  In the last few years they've introduced Blenderie Ommegang and collaborations with their sibling breweries Boulevard and Firestone Walker, and parent Duvel Moortgat.  They've also got a Belgian Pilsner in the mix and a handful of IPAs.  Beer nerds fret no more, Ommegang has you covered. We talk with Ommegang Brewmaster Phil Leinhart about his background and long brewing career, the new stuff happening at Ommegang,  hop farming in New York state, how they partnered to brew the Game of Thrones series of beers, and more.   CRAFT BEER NEWS 3 Floyds Has No “Immediate Plans” to Reopen The 3 Floyds Brewpub A 12-Ounce Can Shortage Looms Due to People Stocking Up on Beer 125 Colorado Breweries are Collaborating on Colorado Strong Pale Ale THE BEER LIST Brewery Ommegang Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Smoked Porter Game of Thrones: My Watch Has Ended Hennepin Farmhouse Saison Rare Vos Belgian Pale Ale Saison Rosé 2019 Saison Rosé 2020 Three Philosophers Belgian Quadrupel Original Blueberry Coffee Bourbon Barrel Wine Barrel Odd 13 Razooka Jane Fruited Sour Piedmont Brewery Satisfied American Lager Pipeworks Punch In Punch Out Pale Ale with pineapple, cherries, and tangerines Weldwerks Coffee French Toast Stout Wild Heaven Fauci Spring Acai Pale Ale ICYMI: More from The Beer of the North 14th Star Brewing with co-founder Steve Gagner | Ep. 193 Lawson’s Finest Liquids with Sean Lawson | Ep. 190 Non-Alcoholic Craft Beer with Athletic Brewing Co. | Ep. 164

Lawson's Finest Liquids is always ready to share a little Sip of Sunshine When Sean Lawson founded Lawson's Finest Liquids in 2008 he wasn't sure if his "hobby" would work out.  His original brewhouse was built to accommodate his fallback plan, a sugar shack to process maple syrup.  He never had to execute the backup plan and today Lawson's beers are distributed to nine states in the northeast with appearances at bottle shares and gatherings across the country. Lawson tells us that although Sip of Sunshine got their name out to the masses, Double Sunshine was the first beer that folks started lining up for.  Each release brought the crowds in earlier, grabbing breakfast and sitting up their chairs.  Outside of New England, most people probably still know the brewery for their hoppy beers.  However, in addition to amazing IPAs, the brewery produces several maple beers, stouts, pilsners, and more.  Lawson even collaborated with a local distiller to make a spirit dubbed Hop Scotch. We cover a lot of ground in our conversation with Lawson including the early days of the brewery as well as growing into their new location, their focus on conservation and philanthropy, the continued popularity of Sip of Sunshine, and more on the other beers they brew. The basic issue that we’ve got with it is not that you shouldn’t develop it, but right now the technology pollutes the water… You can’t make world-class beer with polluted water.” — Simon Thorpe on Beer Sessions Radio
