Thomas Brown is an author, cyclist, mental health advocate, and the founder of R.I.S.E.—Revolution Inspired Self Evolution, whose journey began when he lost his brother to suicide in 2001. Eleven years later, along with a friend who also lost a brother to suicide, he set out on a cross-country bicycle tour for suicide awareness and the healing power of art. He is the host of the Inner Monologue podcast, and author of the book titled “2012 A Bicycle Odyssey,” which tells the story of his cross-country adventure. Thomas shares his own personal struggles with depression prior to his brother's suicide, and why be believes that his brother's death was a result of his lack of awareness and inability to know and understand himself. This launched Thomas on his own journey of introspection and self-awareness, including his many insights and revelations during his cross-country bike tour, which was not only a journey of healing but a mission to raise suicide awareness as well as prevention. In spite of the difficult subject, Thomas tells his story and recounts his bicycle tour with an incredible sense of humor along with the many life lessons he learned along the way, including how he met the love of his life during the trip. http://www.risephoenix.org/ https://www.facebook.com/risephoenix2012/ https://www.instagram.com/_rise_philosophy/ https://www.tiktok.com/@rise_phx?_t=8nr9tf3EF8I&_r=1 https://www.iasp.info/suicidalthoughts/ Call or text 988

Cindy Esliger talks about the inner dialogue we all have that is often driven by stress, fear, and anxiety, and why we shouldn't believe everything it says. The things we tell ourselves are shaped by past experiences, current fears, and future worries and the stress we carry can make these inner voices very unreliable. So how do we start believing a better story about ourselves? While our inner narrative can sometimes be encouraging, it is more often negative and self-sabotaging. It combines a series of conscious thoughts, unconscious beliefs, and personal fears into a dialogue that keeps us stuck in unproductive patterns. Cindy advises awareness as the first step in combating these negative inner thoughts. Becoming aware of our thoughts allows us to replace some of them with more positive ones consciously.Cindy discusses four strategies to help us become more aware of our thoughts in order to kick the unhelpful self-talk out of our heads: 1) Monitor our thoughts, 2) Notice patterns and identify self-sabotaging behaviour, 3) Challenge our inner critic, and 4) Replace negative thoughts with empowering beliefs. As she delves into each point, she offers insight into how the limiting narrative forms and why it's so important to disrupt it so we can live our fullest lives.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Imagining a Better StoryAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

KTM and the Pierer Mobility Group's financial situation was one of the industry's biggest talking points through most of the past summer. Certain details that were shared in a public earnings statement, including the stock price, inventory surpluses, and workforce downsizes were repeatedly mentioned in online articles or videos, and the company has enacted new measures to correct the issues. Dozens of international motorcycle journalists were invited to Austria in September to see and hear what is happening with the Pierer Mobility Group. The two-day trip included presentations on how KISKA analyzes and designs for the motorcycle market, tours of the KTM Component, Engine, Assembly Line, and Research & Development buildings, conversations with executives, and rides through the mountains on production and prototype machines. Hear what we saw during the trip, including how all of KTM's off-road production remains in Austria, from SML's Michael Antonovich.

Self-talk. Visualizations. Bodily awareness. Unconscious thought processes. In our day-to-day course of existence our minds assimilate, respond and react to any number of stimuli from within – and without. But how often do we stop to consider just how we do this and what faculties of apprehension are actually put to use? And do we even have a framework, vocabulary and level of awareness from which to do it?Inner speech (inner monologue), inner vision, sensory awareness, emotions and unsymbolized thinking are all categories that, according to psychologist and researcher Russell T. Hurlburt, can help one come to know what one's "pristine inner experience" is. Along with such a framework and the research inspired by it come many questions. What does it mean to be “in the moment”? Do all people use all categories of inner experience with the same frequency? How are we used to describing our inner experiences to ourselves and to others? Were personages like Gurdjieff on to something when he encouraged people to observe themselves?Join us this week on MindMatters as we question the many assumptions, presuppositions, and mediations that come between cognizance of individual inner experience, and a relative state of unawareness regarding just what makes us tick.

I host two mental health-specific podcasts, Inner Monologue and Stages. Inner Monologue is an interview format where I provide a platform for others to share their stories of trial and triumph. Stages, my latest podcast project, is more of an audio diary where I share the journey of my mental health as I navigate grief and the ever-changing stages of life. I just published my first book, 2012: A Bicycle Odyssey. It tells the tale of a 7,000-mile cross-country bicycle ride for suicide awareness and the healing power of art. That little voice inside your head, Whose words can soothe like honey, Or sting like a bee. PAUSE… This voice can lift you up, And allow you to soar beyond your wildest dreams. Or they can drag you down, And keep you small and scared. PAUSE… So be mindful of your thoughts today. Allowing yourself to simply observe the voice that you hear. LONG PAUSE... Become aware of which words make you feel good, And which make you feel bad. PAUSE… Which comments fill you up, Which comments deflate you. LONG PAUSE… And as you become more mindful of your inner monologue, Know that it is not you. PAUSE… You get to choose and guide this voice inside. LONG PAUSE… So let them pass you by and dissolve into the air, All those sentiments of judgment, Regret, Limitation, And fear. They do not have to be yours today. They do not have to be a part of your inner monologue now. LONG PAUSE… Now inhale deeply, And choose again. Choose to keep those words that build you up, Gently embrace, Encourage, And nourish you. PAUSE… These are the words you can choose to feed your self-worth. This is the voice you can choose to listen to. Namaste, Beautiful.
In this episode, Jeff sits down with author Eric Heuser to look at a scene Eric is working on. Jeff and Eric talk about adding a POV to a work in progress, building emotional resonance, writing a character with a different interior and exterior voice, using reflective prose in segment breaks to give the reader a feeling of intimacy. Voice in My Head is a provocative immersive exploration by Kyle McDonald and Lauren Lee McCarthy that takes large language models the logical extreme of remixing and modulating your inner monologue. Audience participants are invited to customize ChatGPT character that clones your voice to speak to you via an ear bud as you walk around the DocLab festival in Amsterdam and have casual conversations with festival attendees for a half hour. The AI listens to everything you and your interlocutors say, and then pipes every minute or so with feedback based upon your instructions thereby creating a new modulated voice in your head. The piece made me reflect upon my own inner dialogue, and how surprisingly compelling of a piece this is in exploring both the social, ethical, and privacy boundaries of technology but also how art contexts like this create a safe space for earnest exploration for some of the new potentials of immersive technologies and contextually-aware AI. I had a chance to unpack it all with the creators McDonald and McCarthy in Amsterdam after a few days of their world premiere exhibition at IDFA DocLab. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality

When the way we talk about our own bodies becomes negative and self-deprecating, it's time to rewrite that inner monologue. Actress and director Kim Fields, star of The Facts of Life and Living Single, leads us through a process of reevaluating the words we say to ourselves. It's an invitation to send love to every body part, even the ones that make us feel self-conscious or less than, and to find appreciation for all that our bodies can do.
