Time Blindness: What To Do When Now Isn't Now

Emily Kircher-Morris welcomes Dr. Ari Tuckman for a conversation about time blindness, the complexities of ADHD, and the stigma surrounding the disorder. They discuss why ADHD is more about the struggle to convert attention into action than a lack of knowledge. They talk about how and why ADHD affects time perception and performance under pressure. If you're prone to procrastination, anxiety, and time management issues, this is an episode you need to hear. TAKEAWAYS ADHD is often misunderstood as a lack of attention rather than a difficulty in converting attention into action. Time perception in ADHD can be distorted, leading to challenges in planning and prioritizing tasks. Individuals with ADHD may perform better under pressure, but this can lead to anxiety and self-doubt. The internalized stigma can cause ADHD individuals to feel like frauds despite their successes. Social dynamics play a significant role in how ADHD behaviors are perceived by others. The pressure to conform to neurotypical standards can hinder the ability to find effective personal strategies. ADHD can contribute to anxiety, not just in the individual but also in those around them. Procrastination can also cause anxiety for others around you. Time management involves multiple components, including attention management. Physical clocks can help with time perception. Alarms are reminders, not motivators. Gamifying tasks can reduce procrastination. The window will open soon to join the Educator Hub! If you're a teacher, administrator, school counselor, or parent of a neurodivergent student, this community is where you can share, ask questions, and find training that will help you along your journey. In this episode of the I Have ADHD podcast, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Ari Tuckman to talk about one of the most layered and misunderstood topics in the ADHD world: productivity—and how it's tangled up in our relationships, our childhoods, and the expectations we carry from society. We dove deep into how our early experiences shape the way we function (or struggle to function) as adults with ADHD. So many of us grew up feeling like we were “too much” or “not enough,” and those messages often turn into people-pleasing patterns and unrealistic productivity standards that are so hard to shake.Ari and I explored what it really means to be productive—not based on hustle culture or external pressure—but in a way that feels aligned with our personal values, goals, and life circumstances. We also talked about how this plays out in relationships, and how important it is to communicate openly with our partners about what's going on beneath the surface. We touched on the emotional labor of living with ADHD, the frustration of not meeting expectations (especially our own), and the real need for self-compassion as we navigate personal growth. Because here's the truth: being in relationship with yourself—and with others—requires space for change, grace for the messiness, and a deep understanding that we're always evolving. This episode is for anyone who's ever felt like they're not measuring up, who's navigating the push-pull of productivity and self-worth, or who's simply trying to do the best they can with the brain they have. I hope it helps you feel seen, understood, and a little less alone in the process.Ari's website Buy Ari's book here Watch this episode on YouTubeWant help with your ADHD? It's that they're often trapped in a paradox: striving to do more, while silently blaming themselves for not doing enough. That tension—between internal ambition and external expectations—is the focus of this conversation with returning guest clinical psychologist Dr. Ari Tuckman. In this episode, Ari joins Pete and Nikki to explore the deep psychology of productivity, the social pressure to “look busy,” and the subtle ways perfectionism becomes a form of avoidance. Along the way, they discuss the myth of the perfect planner, why your to-do list is lying to you, and what happens when you finally admit you just don't want to do the thing. With humor, heart, and a healthy dose of hard-earned insight, Ari introduces lessons from his new book, The ADHD Productivity Manual, revealing how managing productivity starts not with apps or alarms—but with radical honesty.Because the real challenge isn't doing more—it's knowing what matters enough to do at all.Links & NotesThe ADHD Productivity Manual by Ari Tuckman, Psy.DSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (01:37) - The Productivity Trap with Ari Tuckman (02:46) - The ADHD Productivity Manual by Ari Tuckman (04:37) - Where is the ADHD Productivity Groove? On this episode, I chat with Ari Tuckman, PsyD. Ari is a psychologist, international presenter, author, and ADHD thought leader. He has given more than 650 presentations and podcast interviews and routinely earns excellent reviews for his ability to make complicated information understandable and useful. He is the author of four books, including his most recent, “ADHD After Dark: Better Sex Life, Better Relationship”, "Understand Your Brain, Get More Done”, “More Attention, Less Deficit” and “Integrative Treatment for Adult ADHD”. He is a co-chair of CHADD's conference committee and was awarded the 2023 Hall of Fame award for his significant contributions to the field. He is in private practice in West Chester, PA. Key points Ari's background and focus on ADHD in relationships Ari Tuckman is a psychologist who has specialized in ADHD, particularly in adults, for over 25 years. He has become increasingly interested in the impact of ADHD on relationships and couples, as he felt this was an important but under-discussed aspect of the condition. Prevalence and diagnosis of ADHD Ari discusses the prevalence of ADHD, noting that it affects around 4-5% of adults. He explains that ADHD is often underdiagnosed in adults, as clinicians tend to focus more on identifying it in children. Ari also notes that there can be a "two-for-one" diagnosis, where a child's ADHD diagnosis leads a parent to realize they also have the condition. Differences in ADHD symptoms between genders Ari explains that the core ADHD symptoms are similar across genders, but the way ADHD manifests can differ due to societal expectations and gender roles. Women and girls may be more inclined to try to hide or compensate for their ADHD symptoms, while boys and men may have more "permission" to be openly disruptive. Levels of ADHD severity and associated factors Ari discusses how ADHD can vary in severity, and how other factors like anxiety, depression, substance use, and personal strengths/protective factors can impact the experience of ADHD. He notes that ADHD is not a one-size-fits-all condition. ADHD and occupational/recreational interests Ari shares that while there are some common occupational and recreational interests associated with ADHD (like sales), people with ADHD can thrive in a wide variety of fields if they find work that engages their interests and strengths. ADHD and intimacy Ari explains how ADHD can impact intimacy and , such as difficulty transitioning into a mindset or getting distracted during intimate moments. He emphasizes the importance of being intentional, flexible, and focused on the process rather than performance. Strategies for managing ADHD in relationships Ari provides several recommendations for partners of those with ADHD, including educating themselves on the condition, being intentional about scheduling and communication, and focusing on the positives and complementary strengths in the relationship rather than just the challenges. Recap and closing thoughts Ari and Cam conclude the discussion by emphasizing the importance of flexibility, creativity, and appreciating the unique strengths each partner brings to the relationship, even when there are significant differences like ADHD. How can you ensure that new employees don't gossip? Imagine this: you have a completely gossip-free environment, a positive company culture, and great team communication, and then… a new employee comes along and ruins it. Within weeks of them starting in your department/organisation, you notice a drastic decline in team morale, there's misunderstanding upon misunderstanding. You decide to ignore it because they must still be fitting in and you had such a great interview with this new employee, you feel you just want to give them a fair chance. What would you do? According to the Tuckman model (tune in to an upcoming episode where I'll explain this in detail), all teams will go through a storming phase when a new employee comes along as they learn to work together. However, when does this become concerning? When it comes to gossip and negative attitudes and spread to other employees, you should always take it seriously and ensure you speak to your team, no matter how short or long they've been there, no matter what they're working through in their personal lives, gossip and negative attitudes should not be taken lightly. It can cause a lot of damage in a very short amount of time, and you'll have to spend a significant amount of time repairing the damage. So how can you ensure that this doesn't happen? You gossip-proof your onboarding process. Discuss no-gossip policies and expectations in interviews. Onboarding documentation - must be clear regarding the expectations! Onboarding Training - must be clear regarding the expectations! No-gossip pledges or value statements. Open channels of communication. Follow-up meetings at 3 & 6 weeks and 3&6 months. In this episode of the Psych in Business podcast, host Dr. Ernest Wayde delves into the Tuckman stages of group development, a renowned team effectiveness model introduced by Bruce Tuckman in 1965. These stages—forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjoining—illustrate the expected development of teams as they mature and enhance relationships and leadership. In the forming stage, team members are polite and cautious, focusing on getting to know each other while creating ground rules and establishing objectives. The storming stage introduces conflict, resistance, and emotional responses as the team grapples with roles, leadership, and goals. Dr. Wayde emphasizes the leader's role in providing clear guidelines and conflict resolution methods during this tumultuous phase.Moving to the norming stage, teams develop ways to deal with conflict, becoming more cohesive and accepting of common goals. Roles are clarified, and the team becomes more effective, with a focus on tasks and routine. The performing stage marks the team's peak performance, characterized by flexibility, strong bonds, and high trust levels. Here, leaders play a supportive role, removing obstacles and providing feedback.Lastly, the adjoining stage addresses the breakup or separation of the team. Dr. Wayde highlights the importance of recognizing and rewarding the team's efforts and helping members transition to their next roles. He acknowledges the dynamic nature of teams, noting that shifts in members or tasks may lead them to revisit earlier stages.Dr. Wayde concludes by emphasizing the practicality of using the Tuckman model, acknowledging that teams may not stay in the performing stage indefinitely. Instead, they may cycle back through earlier stages as circumstances evolve.Join Dr. Ernest Wayde in understanding the intricacies of team development and maximizing team effectiveness in the ever-changing landscape of business and organizations. You can visit his business website at: https://www.waydeconsulting.com/

Tuckman's Team Development Model has been around for a while, but I find it to still be relevant and useful today. Some people think that you can whack people together and become high-performing straight away. This just ain't true, and this model helps to understand what stages a team goes through to get to that high-performing point. In this episode, I'll take a look at the stages and how you can navigate them. Like the Show? In this episode, Seye discusses an organization's journey towards creating value streams and aligning teams accordingly. They adopted the approach of taking teams to the work rather than the reverse. This involved setting up teams for new features, but the structure changed after a few months, leading to reassigning team members. Seye refers to the Tuckman's stages of group development to highlight the transitional nature of teams. In this episode, we also discuss how important it is to focus on setting up a robust infrastructure to make it possible to dynamically reconfigure teams, underlining the importance of adaptability in Agile environments. Featured Book of the Week: The Three Marriages: Reimagining Work, Self and Relationship by David Whyte Seye's recommended book for Scrum Masters is "The Three Marriages: Reimagining Work, Self and Relationship" by David Whyte. The book explores reimagining work and relationships, emphasizing the need for a holistic view rather than strict work-life balance. Another impactful read is “Extraordinarily Badass Agile Coaching: The Journey from Beginner to Mastery and Beyond” by Bob Galen, which transformed Seye's coaching approach. He suggests adapting language to the audience, shifting from software development jargon to business terminology. Seye advocates speaking the language of those being served, aligning communication for more effective collaboration.   [IMAGE HERE] Do you wish you had decades of experience? Hi everyone! Today we welcome professor, writer, and poet Melissa Tuckman to the study group. First we read pages 37-38 which are, as with last week's excerpt, truly horrifying. Take heed. Then we jump into the prism and explore the idea of an intertext, which is simply a work which relates in some way to another work. We look at scenes in Coens' movies where a character or the film itself quotes or evokes another text. This could be a classic work of literature, a folk song, or a 50s Hollywood biblical epic. It's the same old Coens, but with different meanings since these texts came along. Hope you enjoy this episode; it goes places. Coens Covered: Meal Ticket; Inside Llewyn Davis; Hail, Caesar! Plus: Slaughterhouse Five, *Cat's Cradle, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis ERRATA: *In the first act of the show Jordan refers to Breakfast of Champions but is actually talking about Cat's Cradle. He misintertextimated and regrets the error. Want to join the study group? Amruta Beri: Building Trust and Encouraging Participation with Team Agreements In this episode, Amruta shares their experience as a new scrum master and the challenges she faced in encouraging participation from all team members. She emphasizes the importance of building trust early in the team formation process and highlights the Tuckman model of team formation as a model that helps us understand the stages of group development. Amruta discusses the issue of some team members lacking trust and not feeling comfortable expressing their views and ideas in meetings, leading to the dominance of the loudest person in the room. To address these issues, Amruta suggests using working agreements (see Lisette's approach to team agreements) and conducting a starting exercise around team agreements. She provides tips such as using silent writing techniques to involve quieter team members and the value of establishing rapport through one-on-one conversations. Additionally, they refer to the "1-2-4-all" method from liberating structures as a useful resource.   [IMAGE HERE] Recovering from failure, or difficult moments is a critical skill for Scrum Masters. How Long Should Agile Teams Stay Together? This is such a good question. I recently got an email from Mike Cohn where we have a bit of a discussion surrounding The Tuckman model, (Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing). My thought is that mature Agile teams should be self-organized and self-regulated. This means that they have the power to adjust in order to maintain an AWESOME culture. What are your thoughts?
