Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America

If you're interested in democratizing the economy then you're going to need to build a social base capable of such a dramatic transformation of our way of life. The only way to shift the balance of power toward the working class is to build the labor movement. Organized labor remains weak in the United States with about 10 percent of all workers organized into unions. This number has dropped nearly 25 percent since the peak of the AFL-CIO during the 1950s following the incredible surge in organization in the mass production industries during the New Deal and World War II. What is to be done to demonstrate our strength in organized numbers? Today we continue our series with labor organizers here in New York City fighting to build unions in the service sector. We've already spoken with workers at Starbucks, Trader Joes, Barboncino's, and Nitehawk. Now we're joined by organizers from Partners Coffee Union who are attempting to form a collective organization that can improve their material interests.

Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America

The unionization rate in the United States remains at around 10% after decades of deindustrialization in the Northeast and Midwest as well as anti-worker policies from corporations and the state, but labor organizers are fighting back. Across the country the UAW is attempting to organize non-union auto plants while here in New York service workers are building collective power. Last year we spoke with organizers from Barboncino's who successfully organized a union at the pizza restaurant where they work. Today we're joined by members of Nitehawk Workers Union Organizing Committee as they prepare for an National Labor Relations Board Election.

This week on Bad First Impression, filmmaker and Nicolas Cage completist Alex Campo and I sit down to discuss a depraved, frenzied, and extremely underrated entry in Cage's career. Rounding out my accidental thematic trilogy of Films with Unwieldy Titles Watched at the Nitehawk, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans screened at the Prospect Park location on October 20, 2023. Afterwards, we discuss Cage's newest film Dream Scenario, how it fits into his body of work, and what the future holds for him.   Discussion topics include: Is there a "the" in the title of this movie, and does shortening it somehow make it worse? Does combing through Cage's extensive indie and direct-to-video catalogue give any insight into his appeal as a mainstream leading man? Should the flaming motorcycle in the Ghost Rider duology make the movies count towards the alarming number of Nicolas Cage movies in which he drives a flaming car? All this and more!   Logo by Kristen Eng Episode artwork by Lily Steinberg

Justin timms @justin_timms is the Creative Director of Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and Co-Founder of Yellow Veil Pictures. BK Horror kicked off last night beginning its annual survey of the genre at Nitehawk. This is NYC's preeminent genre fest, akin to Fantastic, Fantasia, Beyond, Sitges. Justin saw this gap ten years ago and filled it beautifully. The festival has packed screenings and after parties every night. They cover all the ground, prems and favs from festivals like Sundance, features and shorts. Restorations of important horror classics and classes with Miskatonic. This year they're commencing a new award with the first honoree Bill Lustig. Maniac is probably tied with Wolfen to me as favorite NYC horror movie, but also one of my favorite movies period. Joe Spinell in the greatest horror performance ever, period. Yellow Veil's slate is exploding this year, ramping up more releases than ever before, all killer no filler. Love what both of Justin's companies do and was a pleasure to chat with him. Ellen Goosenberg Kent is an Oscar winning documentarian who knows how to produce a compelling story first and foremost. She is always interested in the price paid by common people going against difficult odds, often fighting government systems often unintentionally. She is incredible in her long and varied work. We had the pleasure to talk with her at Nitehawk Cinema - Williamsburg in front of a live studio audience while we screened the documentary. For her short, Ellen brought MTV short Anastasia. Activist Anastasia Shevchenko was accused of being a threat to Russian state. She was kept under house arrest for two years. Sarah McCarthy's short documentary tells the story of a civil rights advocate and single mother who longs to see her children grow up in a free society in a deeply personal account of her family and the sometimes unseen cost of activism. The movie is a deeply humanizing tale of the price paid by a woman struggling for freedom and her family's safety and peace of mind The feature Ellen chose is her latest, Afghan Dreamers also courtesy of MTV. During the screening Nitehawk's chefs served a mouthwatering combination: Sheer Chai, an Afghani Salad, and Kabuli Palaw. Through the story of a robotics team in Afghanistan, Afghan Dreamers recounts the advancements of women in the country since the American invasion and the effects of the Taliban taking over after the Americans left. Using various stock footage of government officials, the story of these high school students is a rollercoaster of joy, pain, hard work, and the country's struggle for women's rights in a conservative society.

Also Drew was supposed to show up to this recording and didn't. WE HAD A LOT OF FUN WITHOUT DREW! My good friend Alec Niedenthal and I went to see The Northman at Nitehawk (prospect park location), sampled a viking burger (which we review in this episode), and podded about the experience back at my place over gluten free beer and mixed olives (garlic stuffed and kalamata). Weirdly enough we had a number of surprise guests show up to my living room: literary critic Christian Lorentzen; Alec's friend Seth from his MFA, who's promoting his self-published book 'Communal Feelings Spaces'; and the Northman himself! It was a wild time!! This episode contains what some losers would call spoilers. Don't listen if you can't handle the details of a story that didn't even happen in real life! Season 2: Episode 6 Nicole Atkins   Photo by Barbara FG   Episode 6 of Song Chronicles’ second season features a freewheeling conversation with Nicole Atkins, a singer-songwriter NPR Music hailed as “one of those people who is so inventive in everything she does.”     Last April, Nicole released her fifth full-length, Italian Ice, an album she described as to "an acid trip through my record collection." It certainly serves up an exquisite blend of soul, country, rock, blues, and classic pop that showcases her powerful, dramatic voice.     Unable to do her normal touring for her new album, Nicole got creative and hosted an online record release event. She also started presenting a weekly livestream variety show, We’re All In This Together. During the summer, Nicole switched to doing a live streaming series, Live From the Steel Porch, initially based out of Asbury Park’s Langosta Lounge (near her hometown of Neptune City, New Jersey) and later from The Dive Motel in East Nashville, her current home.   Nicole performing at the Langosta Lounge   In December, Nicole released the holiday single “Every Single Christmas,” which she co-wrote with JD McPherson. (She quite accurately described her version as “Cyndi Lauper and Brenda Lee, the spirit of the NY Dolls and The Ramones' 'Palisades Park,' all rolled up into a National Lampoon’s Christmas movie"). Endlessly creative, she has already put out via Bandcamp this year covers of Brenda Lee’s “Break It To Me Gently” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust," as well as a duet with her friend Marissa Nadler on The Fleetwoods’ gem “Mr. Blue.”     The pandemic also gave her the opportunity to spend a lot of time with another of creative loves: painting. In fact, this interview took place while she was creating a mural at the Ivy Manor Studios in Sheffield, Alabama in the legendary Muscle Shoals area.   Nicole points out a detail of the mural she was painting at Ivy Manor Studios Portraits of the Swampers that Nicole painted   Muscle Shoals has been a favorite destination for Nicole of late. It’s the location for her label, Single Lock Records, which was founded by The Alabama Shakes’ Ben Tanner and the acclaimed singer-songwriter John Paul White. She also recorded Italian Ice at the renowned Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. Featuring contributions from Swampers David Hood and Spooner Oldham, Spoon’s Britt Daniels, the album has garnered much acclaim. Consequence of Sound raved that Italian Ice is “the best thing she’s done so far,” and Elvis Costello stated it proves “once more that you can respect the ‘then’ and still be about the ‘now’.”     Nicole outside and inside the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio   Music has been a major part of Nicole’s life since childhood. She began learning piano when she was nine, taught herself guitar at 13, and was playing in bands by seventh grade. While she went to University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study art, Nicole admits she concentrated more on music. During her time in Charlotte, she played in the popular local band Nitehawk and the alt-country group Los Parasols. She then spent several years bouncing between Charlotte and New York City, sometimes playing in groups and sometimes solo.   Nicole performing on Late Night With David Letterman Show in 2007   Attracting major label interest, Nicole and her band The Sea signed with Columbia in 2006, with their debut, Neptune City, appearing in 2007. Nicole had a new band, dubbed The Black Sea, when she started doing her second album; however, problems with Columbia made her leave the label without the album being released. The record (entitled Mondo Amore) eventually came out on Razor & Tie Records in 2011.   Nicole singing at La Zona Rosa at 2010's SXSW. Photo by Kirk Stauffer   While preparing to make album three, Nicole suffered the bad luck of having Hurricane Sandy flood her family’s home. Neptune City producer Tore Johansson invited her to record her album at his studio in Sweden. There she cobbled together songs from fragments she had on her iPhone, which resulted in 2014’s Slow Phaser, her self-described “prog-disco” album.   Photo by Brett Winter Lemon   In concert at Red Rocks Photo By Rett Rogers   Teaming up with Single Lock Records, Nicole recorded her fourth album in Fort Worth, Texas with the production trio Niles City Sound (the team behind Leon Bridges’ breakout debut). The stylish Goodnight Rhonda Lee exudes a retro vibe that attracted comparisons to Dusty Springfield, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline, and it’s a sound that evolved into something even more timeless on Italian Ice.     Photo by Barbara FG   Please enjoy our conversation with the multi-talented, thoroughly delightful Nicole Atkins.
