Guest: Rick Hall, Jr. You may not know Rick Hall's name, but you know the music that Rick Hall developed as the founder and producer of FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In this episode, we talk to Rick Hall Jr. about the motivation that led his dad into the music business and breaking through Alabama's segregation attitudes on the 60th anniversary of his worldwide musical legacy. You won't want to miss the stories about Rick Hall's run-in with Aretha Franklin's husband, which caused Hall to eventually lose his famed "Swampers" session musicians to Atlantic Records Executive Jerry Wexler. While those things were happening, Rick Jr. was doing his best to "corrupt" the angelic Donny Osmond behind the scenes in that rural Alabama town. Tune in to hear the rest of the story.

Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and the studios there helped create some of the most important and resonant songs in rock and roll. On this episode, we look back at bit of the history of the Muscle Shoals sound, a trio of FAME Studio house bands, including the great "Swampers", and how Detroit's Bob Seger fused their sound with his heartland rock to produce some underappreciated but great songs - and one song ("Old Time Rock and Roll") that has been played way too much, burned deeply into our music brains, but whose story - from writing to the final version - is a wild one. We listen to a few Seger and Muscle Shoals Studios and Fame Studios tunes, hear some sublimely elegant Bob deep cuts, and have a blast rediscovering some of the famous and forgotten songs that came out of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. #muscleshoals #rolling stones #otisreddiing #wilsonpickett #bobseger #cher #osmonds #sweetsoulmusic SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforwardmusic.com website: rockpopandroll.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com

This week, legendary Muscle Shoals bass player David Hood talks about recording Willie's classic 1974 album Phases and Stages with his fellow Swampers, focusing on his favorite track on the record, “(How Will I Know) I'm Falling in Love Again.” Phases was, of course, named Willie's finest album ever by Texas Monthly, and it prompts memories from Hood on the fabled R&B producer who brought the project to Muscle Shoals, Jerry Wexler; the mere two days they took to cut it; and the weird moment when Willie first walked into the studio.

The History of Rock N Roll Part X - Soundtrack of the Century: 20 Feet from Stardom/Standing in the Shadows of Motown/Muscle Shoals On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I continue our exploration of The World of Rock N Roll with a look at the foundation of any song . . . the bands and the background singers that give every song structure, power, and drive. This week we look at Morgan Neville's 20 Feet From Stardom (2019) - profiling Tata Vega, Judith Hill, Jo Lawry, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and the great Darlene Love - Paul Justman's Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) - profiling the great Motown backing band The Funk Brothers. composed of: Jack Ashford (percussion), Bob Babbitt (bass), Uriel Jones (drums), Joe Hunter (keyboards), Joe Messina (guitar), Richard "Pistol" Allen (drums), Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drums), Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion), Johnny Griffith (keyboards), Earl Van Dyke (keyboards), and Robert White (guitar). Finally, we close out the show with an incredible film showcasing The Birth of the Deep South Soul & Rock N Roll Sound birthed by the great Alabama Producer Rick Hall and FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama . . . I'm talking about Greg "Freddy" Camalier's Muscle Shoals (2013). An incredible film that showcases the legacy of Hall and the Swampers including: Barry Beckett (keyboards), Roger Hawkins (drums), David Hood (bass), Jimmy Johnson (guitar), Chips Moman (guitar), Junior Lowe (guitar), Dan Penn, Tommy Cogbill, Pete Carr (guitar), and Spooner Oldham (organ and piano). This is a fun episode that will - hopefully - introduce three great films and a host of music that you owe it to yourself to embrace. Take a listen and let us know what you think. This week, we bring you a rare conversation with the braintrust behind the brass-forward instrumental supergroup the Menahan Street Band: Thomas Brenneck and Homer Steinweiss. If Tarantino and Scorsese ever needed a custom-made 1970's greasy soul soundtrack, MSB might be the perfect choice. While the timeless Daptone Records sound has gone worldwide thanks to breakout stars like the late Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, most don't know the bandleaders and songwriters behind their intricately arranged works. Guitarist/producer Brenneck has been the secret sauce in helping hitmaker Mark Ronson create the vintage backdrops for crossover stars like Amy Winehouse, while Steinweiss' slinky drumming can be heard across the Daptone universe, including on Jones, Winehouse and Lee Fields and The Expressions records, not to mention his work with Lady Gaga, St. Vincent and Bruno Mars. For the first time in a decade, MSB – which includes Dave Guy (The Roots), Leon Michaels (The Black Keys) and Nick Movshon (The Expressions) – have reconvened the troops to create their most effortlessly cinematic collection yet: the cheekily titled The Exciting Sounds Of The Menahan Street Band. The album art alone signifies a sensual, intimate evening is ahead to whoever listens. Is the design NSFW? Maybe. Brenneck called into the taping from outside LA and Steinweiss from his studio in New York City. The conservation jumped back to how they formed the group in 2007, how they convinced Bradley to join them in making new music (he had been doing James Brown impression work) and how they find that out-of-body improvisational zen zone which creates the aural moods of mystery and intrigue – showcased best in the reverby Bond-like jam “Starchaser.” A favorite surreal moment that Brenneck mentioned was driving through Brooklyn hearing their song sampled by Jay-Z. For a moment, their horns were blaring from every car radio on the island. While hip hop legends often find their beats and backdrops from classic soul and R&B vinyl, notables like Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott and 50 Cent have mined the funky MSB catalog for years. Sir Paul McCartney also used their services. If you need an instant vibe, they've got you. Even in sparkling trumpet-led themes like “Glovebox Pistol,” which clocks in at a minute and eight seconds long, you can see a velvet-boothed, smoke-filled scene unfolding, bringing to mind the lush scores of The Godfather or The Score. Only recently have star backing-bands like The Wrecking Crew, The Swampers, and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section come to be appreciated for creating some of the most beloved songs in the American pop canon, from The Beach Boys and Aretha Franklin, to Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and The Staples Singers. It can be argued that in the 21st century, Brenneck and Steinweiss (and the work of The Menahan Street Band) deserve to be in that conversation. With one listen of The Exciting Sounds Of The Menahan Street Band, you are transported – exactly where, is up to you.

In Episode 143 of the Trampled Underfoot Podcast, Mark Lindsay shares facts about a very well made documentary titled Muscle Shoals that explains it. The conversation starts off with an examination of how people like Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge, and Duane Allman, among others, came to this sleepy Alabama town to record some of the biggest hits in music history. How did it happen? Why that time and why that place? Season 2: Episode 6 Nicole Atkins   Photo by Barbara FG   Episode 6 of Song Chronicles’ second season features a freewheeling conversation with Nicole Atkins, a singer-songwriter NPR Music hailed as “one of those people who is so inventive in everything she does.”     Last April, Nicole released her fifth full-length, Italian Ice, an album she described as to "an acid trip through my record collection." It certainly serves up an exquisite blend of soul, country, rock, blues, and classic pop that showcases her powerful, dramatic voice.     Unable to do her normal touring for her new album, Nicole got creative and hosted an online record release event. She also started presenting a weekly livestream variety show, We’re All In This Together. During the summer, Nicole switched to doing a live streaming series, Live From the Steel Porch, initially based out of Asbury Park’s Langosta Lounge (near her hometown of Neptune City, New Jersey) and later from The Dive Motel in East Nashville, her current home.   Nicole performing at the Langosta Lounge   In December, Nicole released the holiday single “Every Single Christmas,” which she co-wrote with JD McPherson. (She quite accurately described her version as “Cyndi Lauper and Brenda Lee, the spirit of the NY Dolls and The Ramones' 'Palisades Park,' all rolled up into a National Lampoon’s Christmas movie"). Endlessly creative, she has already put out via Bandcamp this year covers of Brenda Lee’s “Break It To Me Gently” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust," as well as a duet with her friend Marissa Nadler on The Fleetwoods’ gem “Mr. Blue.”     The pandemic also gave her the opportunity to spend a lot of time with another of creative loves: painting. In fact, this interview took place while she was creating a mural at the Ivy Manor Studios in Sheffield, Alabama in the legendary Muscle Shoals area.   Nicole points out a detail of the mural she was painting at Ivy Manor Studios Portraits of the Swampers that Nicole painted   Muscle Shoals has been a favorite destination for Nicole of late. It’s the location for her label, Single Lock Records, which was founded by The Alabama Shakes’ Ben Tanner and the acclaimed singer-songwriter John Paul White. She also recorded Italian Ice at the renowned Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. Featuring contributions from Swampers David Hood and Spooner Oldham, Spoon’s Britt Daniels, the album has garnered much acclaim. Consequence of Sound raved that Italian Ice is “the best thing she’s done so far,” and Elvis Costello stated it proves “once more that you can respect the ‘then’ and still be about the ‘now’.”     Nicole outside and inside the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio   Music has been a major part of Nicole’s life since childhood. She began learning piano when she was nine, taught herself guitar at 13, and was playing in bands by seventh grade. While she went to University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study art, Nicole admits she concentrated more on music. During her time in Charlotte, she played in the popular local band Nitehawk and the alt-country group Los Parasols. She then spent several years bouncing between Charlotte and New York City, sometimes playing in groups and sometimes solo.   Nicole performing on Late Night With David Letterman Show in 2007   Attracting major label interest, Nicole and her band The Sea signed with Columbia in 2006, with their debut, Neptune City, appearing in 2007. Nicole had a new band, dubbed The Black Sea, when she started doing her second album; however, problems with Columbia made her leave the label without the album being released. The record (entitled Mondo Amore) eventually came out on Razor & Tie Records in 2011.   Nicole singing at La Zona Rosa at 2010's SXSW. Photo by Kirk Stauffer   While preparing to make album three, Nicole suffered the bad luck of having Hurricane Sandy flood her family’s home. Neptune City producer Tore Johansson invited her to record her album at his studio in Sweden. There she cobbled together songs from fragments she had on her iPhone, which resulted in 2014’s Slow Phaser, her self-described “prog-disco” album.   Photo by Brett Winter Lemon   In concert at Red Rocks Photo By Rett Rogers   Teaming up with Single Lock Records, Nicole recorded her fourth album in Fort Worth, Texas with the production trio Niles City Sound (the team behind Leon Bridges’ breakout debut). The stylish Goodnight Rhonda Lee exudes a retro vibe that attracted comparisons to Dusty Springfield, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline, and it’s a sound that evolved into something even more timeless on Italian Ice.     Photo by Barbara FG   Please enjoy our conversation with the multi-talented, thoroughly delightful Nicole Atkins.

In "20 Pounds of Headlines," we round up news from the world of Bob Dylan and in "Who Did It Better?" we ask you who did "Pressing On" better: Regina McCrary with the Chicago Mass Choir or Alicia Keys, recorded in FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals.

What absolute failures — what kind of respectable adults in the public policy field tirelessly attempt to deplatform and bury through malicious search engine positioning strategy a news brand that outed an occult child trafficking ring? Amy Leonardi’s fake FULCRUM sham is disgusting, pathetic, and underscores the accuracy of our reporting on DC’s “elite” suspected pedophile John Podesta — and his equally pathetic known Satanic family members, Satanic losers in an alleged cult, as per the WikiLeaks. Losers who spiritcook, as per the WikiLeaks. They spiritcook, folks. That’s the dysfunction in our democracy, and no amount of fake FULCRUMs will hide the truth from the many millions now seeking it. Unscrupulous careerist Swampers tried to wallpaper over the FULCRUM brand for the last year. And they failed — the whole world will know what Podesta and Alefantis were talking about. Those with a human moral compass in any working order would swiftly try to get to the bottom of a child trafficking ring linked to Jeffrey Epstein, presumably, rather than try to ruthlessly cover it all up like a bad wallpaper job! No soul! Sad, cold eyed mediocre Swampers tried to wallpaper over the big one, it appears. Who does that? And who does that using dark money, while positioning herself as a “non-profit”? If Amy Leonardi’s Issue One is a non-profit, what possible motive could they have for aggressively bidding on FULCRUM News search terms, intentionally vying for our name in search results, and copying our branding and language in order to starve us in Google search results for traffic related to searches for our own name, and our very truthful coverage of what John Podesta, James Alefantis, and those around them were allegedly into — as per the WikiLeaks:https://www.fulcrumnews.com/blog/2020/2/28/understanding-john-podestas-satanic-sperm-baths Shameful Swamp. Yet they are a well-funded dark money non-profit, meaning by law the members of Issue One such as Leonardi cannot profit from their Internet marketing efforts — so what is the motive here?Seems like someone is trying awfully hard to wallpaper over FULCRUM News’ truthful coverage of John Podesta, and his associates — at a time when Podesta has taken a very active role in the 2020 Democratic election effort for Joe Biden.Interesting.These mediocre Swampers reveal the truth by way of what they try so hard to extinguish. Pizzagate is real, and John Podesta needs to go to prison for it already.

Scott Sharrard talks about his Souther Roots Licks & Creative Approaches guitar lessons available on TrueFire, performs, and answers questions. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Scott:Scott Sharrard is best known as lead guitarist and bandleader to the late Gregg Allman. But his personal artistic journey – which includes singing, songwriting, producing and arranging – began long before he first teamed up with the rock icon. It’s a mission that resumes with “Saving Grace,” Sharrard’s fifth [or sixth?] album -- and his first since Allman’s death.“Gregg had a pure passion and heart,” Sharrard says of his friend, “especially when it came to being a musician. That authenticity and dedication is a daily inspiration, and I will always carry that with me onstage and in the studio.”“Saving Grace,” with the blues at its core, bears a distinctly southern spirit, seamlessly assimilating the sounds of American roots music that Sharrard has long embraced. Sessions took place in Memphis and at the historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Half the album employs the Hi Rhythm Section, the other The Swampers of Muscle Shoals.“These guys are legends and heroes of ours who have played on so many life-changing records,” Sharrard says. “This record was steeped in the best the South has to offer. We cut the rhythm section and lead vocals all live on the floor, direct to tape. Old school. We let the songs and the band speak. We also had some of the best barbecue and soul food you could ever imagine, and a lot of laughs and good times with our heroes. How can you lose?”‘All those cats schooled me…’Sharrard’s travels to the heart of the American South began in his native Milwaukee. He was born December 28, 1976 – the day his hero Freddie King died – and was a club fixture in Brewtown long before he could legally take a drink.“Milwaukee at that time was an oasis for a whole group of musical masters,” Sharrard recalls. “Mel Rhyne, Buddy Miles, Hubert Sumlin, Luther Allison, Clyde Stubblefield… They were our local bar bands! All those cats schooled me in different ways, backstage, on gigs and at jams.”Sharrard was 15 when his father took him to a local blues joint called the Up and Under Pub. There he sat in with singer/guitarist (and local one-named legend) Stokes, who would become his mentor. Another was powerhouse “Chitlin’ Circuit” singer and guitarist Willie Higgins.Sharrard soon graduated to occasional dates in Chicago, with tutelage coming via jams alongside two fabled Muddy Waters sidemen, drummer Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and pianist Pinetop Perkins.Big Apple, not Big EasyThen came a chance 1996 move to New York City. The 20-year-old Sharrard, eager to bolt Milwaukee, had his mind on New Orleans. But his friend Sean Dixon, with whom he had a band called The Chesterfields, had found a rent-controlled apartment in the East Village.“That settled it,” Sharrard remembers with a laugh. “I became a New York City resident for the first time. My next-door neighbor was Allen Ginsberg, who was already one of my literary heroes at that time. I used to eat at Mee’s Chinese restaurant sitting across from Allen. It was our corner restaurant with a cheap dinner special. He’d always order the ginger fish and write! … It was like a dream, really. All those giant buildings spreading into infinity. It was so overwhelming.”Sharrard had been in the Big Apple but a year when he met iconic Atlantic Records executive Ahmet Ertegun, who mentored The Chesterfields and gave the young guitar-slinger some sage advice.“Ahmet told me that you must do it all – and well – if you want to survive as a musician,” Sharrard remembers. “He told me to get it all together: writing, singing, producing, playing, arranging. He convinced me to work twice as hard because around 2000 he saw the end of the music business as we knew it. He felt no one was around to support artists like back in the heyday of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies.”The Chesterfields cut three albums and toured nationally before Sharrard began to chart his own course. A series of releases followed, including “Dawnbreaker” (2005), “Analog/Monolog” (2008) and “Ante Up” (2009).Ertegun wasn’t the only legend with Sharrard on his radar back then: The young guitarist also forged a relationship with Levon Helm – performing with The Band drummer about a dozen times, including his final gig just before his death in April of 2012.Sharrard remains close with Helm’s daughter, Amy, and a host of other artists on the Woodstock scene.Preparation meets opportunityIt was through Amy’s then-husband, multi-instrumentalist Jay Collins – already a member of Allman’s band – that Sharrard embarked on the collaboration of a lifetime. In the fall of 2008, Sharrard began a nearly decade-long run with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.“I grew up on the music of the Allman Brothers,” says Sharrard. “I consider first hearing them to be the ‘Big Bang’ moment for me as a pre-teen. I’ve always been chasing what I like to call ‘Real Rock and Roll,’ a blend of blues, jazz, soul, country and folk – with the central goal being to create an original sound of your own. In that respect, working with Gregg just solidified everything I’ve believed since I was a kid.”Sharrard joined the Gregg Allman Band as a touring guitarist and later became Musical Director. The fruitful partnership ended with the 69-year-old Allman’s death on May 27, 2017. But not before Allman covered Sharrard’s “Love Like Kerosene” on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album, the posthumous, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records, 2017).Another “Southern Blood” track, the unforgettable farewell “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year.Sharrard’s deep respect for Allman factored heavily into the 2018 release date for “Saving Grace.” Tracking was completed in December of 2016. But Sharrard – knowing Allman’s health was failing and that “Southern Blood” would be his last hurrah – chose to delay its unveiling. He’s now begun a new chapter with an album he consciously wanted to summarize the last 20 years of his work – and one that showcases the totality of his artistry: as guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and bandleader. In short, he says, it’s rock n’ roll rooted in everything else.“I basically have a rock ’n’ roll band,” Sharrard explains. “When I was growing up, I loved bands like Little Feat, Led Zeppelin and the Allmans. They would explore so many styles and experiment. That’s something I have always tried to embrace, and that’s how I want to present my music today. This is what I tried to do with Gregg. Now I’m continuing that as a solo artist.”Scott has recently joined the legendary band Little Feat as a guitarist/vocalist. He will be releasing his 6th solo album in Spring 2020.

In some frank words, Donald Trump Jr. reportedly believes it is possible the Trump/Pence ticket will lose in November, surprising conservatives and leading to Biden-loyal prosecutors digging deep into the Trump family’s business affairs over the years — with the intent to “hurt us,” as Don Jr. put it.Speaking of legal matters, it is well past time for the FULCRUM News media group to sue — in US federal court — Amy Leonardi and her dark money Swamper group Issue One for brand infringement; they are trying to flood search results with their fake FULCRUM, which was launched years after FULCRUM DC, and which we can prove in court has less than 1/100th our pre-existing established brand recognition. I think we can also argue an electronic harassment component here; Amy Leonardi ignored our multiple emails demanding she stop her bizarre, apparently very well-funded campaign to wipe FULCRUM News, and me personally, from Google search results — even going so far as to top bid on terms including “FULCRUM News” to draw readers and viewers away from our truthful journalism. Donald Trump Jr. has reportedly become pessimistic on the campaign’s odds. Now, why is that?Pizzagate is real, and John Podesta needs to go to prison for it. Did you know that, Issue One? That should be America’s issue one: accountability for Podesta, and the others implicated in strange emails and private postings. Pizzagate is real, and John D. Podesta needs the investigation he should have gotten 4 years ago. And we deserve whatever we deserve as the journalism outfit who broke and stood by it — rather than being snuffed out unceremoniously by some creepy Swampers, rather than seeing our own outlet’s brand name disappeared intentionally right before our own eyes.We deserve better than that, as do our many supporters.https://www.fulcrumnews.com/blog/2019/2/11/pizzagate-is-real-and-john-podesta-needs-to-go-to-prison-for-it Given how correct we have been on these topics, why try to snuff us out now, deliberately and coldly like that, Issue One? Why ignore our emails, yet frantically visit our web site right after we called you out? Time to find out in federal court.David Seaman was recently a guest on The Melt Podcast with Chris Snipes. If you sat next to Mark Narmore on an airplane, chances are you wouldn't think he is an award-winning songwriter.  He also hails from Muscle Shoals royalty. That's the way this humble wordsmith prefers it. In the late 1980s, Mark was a student at the University of North Alabama. For pocket change,  he spun records at WLX in Lexington, AL. An aspiring songwriter, Mark honed his skills by working at the feet of Fame Recording Studios founder and producer, Rick Hall.  It was at this famous studio where he wrote "The Moon Over Georgia," a top-ten Country Music hit for the group Shenandoah. RELATED: Emily Elgin is a real Oklahoma Cowgirl, and a damn good singer/songwriter too! In 1995, Mark and Walt Aldridge, another hall of fame Muscle Shoals songwriter, penned "Like There Ain't No Yesterday" for Blackhawk. However, his blockbuster hit came along a decade later when Craig Morgan cut "That's What I Love About Sunday," which was the most performed song on Country radio in 2005.  Mark grew up on the outskirts of Muscle Shoals listening to his cousin, keyboardist Spooner Oldham. He also had the good fortune of seeing the infamous Swampers and dozens of major artists who ventured to Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound recording studios during the 1970s and 80s. Keyboards are his primary instrument, yet this versatile musician can also play guitar and sing. Artists such as Josh Turner, Alabama, Reba McIntyre, Terri Clark, Guy Penrod, and others have recorded his material.  RELATED: Garth Brooks Steel Guitarist Talks About Playing With Country Music's Elite Mark continues writing songs for Noble Vision Music Publishing in Nashville, TN. 1966 - August: Wilson Pickett “The Exciting Wilson Pickett”

What the Riff?!?

While you may think of Motown when you first hear Wilson Pickett, this sound is neither from Detroit or its counterpart from Philadelphia.  This is from the deep south with the deep soul of the 2 M's - Memphis and Muscle Shoals.  The Exciting Wilson Pickett was Pickett's third studio album and firmly established his credentials as one of the leading lights of Soul music.    Pickett grew up in Alabama, and like many soul singers at the time he got his start in church.  He had a contentious relationship with his mother who he described as "the baddest woman in my book."  Eventually he went to live with his father - and further honed his singing style - in Detroit.  Many tracks on this album were recorded at Muscle Shoals with a backup band called The Swampers.  Lynyrd Skynyrd would cite them as they "were known to pick a song or two."  The Swampers would tour with Pickett and form an interracial act during a time when this was unusual..Wilson Pickett was known by a number of names including "Wild Wilson" or "Wicked Pickett," and was known for his wild lifestyle.  He would have a number of difficulties with alcohol and cocaine over the decades, which would put him in trouble with relationships and the law.  Wilson Pickett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.Wilson Pickett died of a heart attack in 2006, just weeks shy of his 65th birthday.  The Land of 1,000 DancesThis song was a minor hit in 1963 for Chris, Kenner, but became a top 10 hit for Pickett.  While he doesn't name 1,000 dances (and the name of the song never appears in the lyrics), he does name 16 including the Pony, The Mashed Potato, and The Twist.  You may remember this song from the movie "Forrest Gump."Barefootin'The second track featured in today's podcast is also a remake (originally recorded by Robert Parker), with a faster tempo than the original.  Check out that horn section by The Swampers.99-1/2 Won't DoThis is a slower track based off a gospel track transitioned to a love song.  "I got to have all your love, night and day.  Not just a little part, but all of your heart, sugar, Ninety-nine and a half just won't do."In the Midnight HourThis is a signature song he co-wrote, and also connects with gospel songs - I may meet Jesus soon in the morning, maybe in the midnight hour.  This song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Gilligan's Island”This comedy was current in 1966, but we all remember this from reruns on afternoon TV after school. STAFF PICKS:“Over Under Sideways Down” by The YardbirdsBruce brings us a song inspired by Rock Around the Clock by Haley and the Comets.  It came out as a single in May 1966, and was on the charts at the time.  That's Jeff Beck on the lead guitar, and he also plays bass on this track as well.“Sunny Afternoon” by The KinksRob's staff pick made it to #14 on the Billboard charts.  Brothers Ray and Dave Davies formed The Kinks in 1964, and Ray Davies wrote this song.  It is about the massive taxes that the British Labour party was pushing out under Harold Wilson.“You Don't Have to Say You Love Me” by Dusty SpringfieldBrian's staff pick features his favorite female vocalist from the 1960's.  Springfield heard this tune originally in Italian, and had new lyrics written for it.  She cried when she first heard this song with the new lyrics.  A number of artists covered this song, including Elvis Presley.“Sweet Young Thing” by The Chocolate WatchbandWayne features an American garage band from California, who sing about a Peeping Tom spotting his “sweet young thing” at a party.  Wayne found this group off a compilation album called  Nuggets:  Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Jeff's Boogie” by The YardbirdsThis instrumental from the B-side of “Over Under Sideways Down” wraps us up this week's podcast.

Recorded at Puckett's Grocery in Leiper's Fork, TN, welcome to the Southern Americana Podcast: Where we will Connect the South's music, people, and places. Our first episode with singer/songwriter Emily Elgin is up on Apple Podcast (formerly iTunes). The South is an amazing place. It's given birth to a multitude of remarkable music and amazing personalities. And as I've heard all of my life, the entire Southeastern United States is the "garden spot of the universe." I'm Paul Stanley, and I'll be your host for this Southern Americana podcast. For the past seven years, I've been a freelance writer and publish much of my work about the South on my website, OneSouthernMan.com. I love the South, everything about it, especially the music and people, and I want to share it with you. I grew up in the small town of Savannah. No, not Georgia, Savannah, Tennessee, which sits on the banks of the Tennessee River, just a few miles from Shiloh battlefield and Pickwick Lake. I've spent almost my entire life in Tennessee and the South, except for my college years in Texas, another state, or should I say a country that I adore. Oh, and I spent three years in my mid-twenties on foreign soil, in what I refer to as "the tundra," or Kansas. Yet the South has always called me home. Where I grew up, there were many sayings about the South that hung on our walls: A Southerner: "A person born or living in the South; gracious, easy-going, slow-taking, friendly, devoted to front porches, oak trees, cool breezes, magnolias, peaches, and fried chicken." Another said, "The South is a place where...tea is sweet, and accents are sweeter, summer starts in April (thank goodness), macaroni and cheese is a vegetable, those front porches are wide and our words long, pecan pie is a staple, Y'all is a proper noun, biscuits always come with gravy, even chocolate gravy, everything is "darlin', (and you're preferred to that or Honey by any respectable diner waitress) and someone's heart is always blessed." I could add a lot more to that list, such as bourbon, barbecue, SEC football, and tailgating in The Grove at Ole Miss. We'll talk about these and many more subjects in future episodes. From time to time, I'll bring in co-hosts who will also share their love for music, especially the genre we know as Americana. What is Americana music? It's a lot of things. Its roots are found in the blues that originated from the Mississippi Delta, and country music that made its way from the hills of Appalachia to Nashville. It's from the early rock n roll sounds created by Sam Phillips and Elvis in Memphis. And what about the jazz riffs from Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Americana combines folk songs of the great depression with the sounds made famous by Rick Hall and The Swampers in Muscle Shoals. And let's not forget about the soulful gospel sounds created in Black churches that dot the southern landscape. Whatever it is, Americana music sounds great. As for people, where do we begin? There's singer/songwriters, playwrights, actors, musicians, athletes, chefs, business people, and tons of other exciting people from all walks of life. Some are household names you'll easily recognize, others you probably never heard of. Many were born in the South, while others are transplants. Some even reside in other regions or across the oceans, yet all have left a footprint in the South. And the places. The larger cities of Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Charleston certainly give us plenty to talk about. And let's not forget the smaller towns and communities such as Clarksdale, Oxford, and Natchez, Mississippi, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Fayetteville, Arkansas, quaint towns in the bluegrass lands of Kentucky, small communities in the low country of the Carolinas, or in the hill country of Virginia. There are so many places that impact Americana. Most of our episodes will be recorded in a small community in Middle Tennessee called Leiper's Fork. Over the past twenty years, this magical community not only is home to some exciting locals but also to some of the top Americana and recording artists such as Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow, Wynonna Judd, Carrie Underwood, Vince Neil, J.T. Hodges, Will Hoge, Layla Tucker, and countless others. Where is Leiper's Fork? Leiper's Fork is located about 10 miles southwest of Franklin, TN, which is about twenty miles south of Nashville. It's one of the places where the Americana Music Triangle was conceived, and if you haven't yet visited, it's a place you'll want to experience soon. We'll also hit the road and record episodes all over the South where ever we can find engaging music, people and places. The first episode of Southern Americana podcast is an interview with Country/Americana recording artist, Emily Elgin, who recently released her first EP, This Woman. I invite you to tag along on this journey of Southern Americana. It's going to be a fun ride.

“Now, Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers. And they’ve been known to pick a song or two.” Literally millions of people have heard this famous line from Lynyrd Skynyrd but how many actually know what it means? The Swampers were the famous rhythm section from Muscle Shoals’ FAME recording studio and they are responsible for hundreds of popular hits and thousands of great feeling tracks. This week we’ll christen the midway point of the second season and listen to the Swampers’ incredible drummer, Roger Hawkins, for our artist feature. Knowing that this topic would be dead center of Jon’s strike zone he details a short biography of Hawkins and discusses the many influences, sometimes unknowingly, on the drumming populace. Hawkins is sometimes mistaken for RnB studio greats, typically Al Jackson or Bernard Purdie, so we take time to explain the reasons for that. We then listen to several tracks featuring Roger and analyze what’s happening in each track. Below are the song choices from each host. Guest:  Jason Fowler, Musician About Jason: Jason Fowler's sound is a mix of melodic passion, with roots that can be traced to a musically inspired family. Fowler first displayed his talents for music and writing in the band Ultraphonic. The band went on to win a $250,000 recording contract with Garage Band Records. Ultraphonic would begin recording its third album with legendary producer, Johnny Sandlin (Allman Bros. Band/Widespread Panic), complemented by industry force, Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, (aka The Swampers). Later Fowler was the front man for the band Speed X alongside Mike Stone of '80s metal band Queensryche, Josh Sattler of Double Drive, as well as Nick Catanese and Mike Froedge of Black Label Society. The band proved to be a force in the hard-rock music scene for several years. Fowler currently performs with industry heavyweights Will Turpin of Collective Soul and Shane Evans, the original drummer for Collective Soul. Fowler released his solo debut Letters from the Inside in 2014 as a musical journal of his experience, newfound strength and hope in his recovery from substance abuse and homelessness. In March 2016, Fowler released his debut Christian album I Fall In. He currently lives in Atlanta, where he has served as the worship pastor of Refuge City Church, with his wife and two sons.  www.jasonfowlermusic.com The opinions expressed during this radio/podcast broadcast are for inspiration, information and entertainment purposes. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

David Hood, the legendary bassist and member of the Swampers, the Muscle Shoals-based band that backed up countless classic soul records, is my guest this week. Guys like David are the reason I was inspired to do this show in the first place. I first heard him through the Duane Allman anthology, an album I picked up as a kid that contained all this amazing soul music that Duane had been a part of in the late 60's. Upon further investigation, I was led to the world of Muscle Shoals, and FAME Studios, the home of classic soul music for artists like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, John Hammond, Clarence Carter, and so many more. David also went on to play on albums for Paul Simon, Traffic, and the list goes on and on. The Muscle Shoals documentary from a few years back is a must-see, and David was kind enough to spend some time with me talking about the studios, life during that time in Muscle Shoals, and to detail some of the sessions that so many of us know and love. Enjoy my conversation with David Hood!

We open in Manhattan, in the main room, the big studio at Columbia Records. It’s Fall of 1963. A big-time, high-stakes recording session for Aretha Franklin is about to get underway. Aretha is an astonishing, one-in-a-billion talent, but it’s just not clicking for her at Columbia. We spend a little time exploring why it isn’t clicking, and then we talk a little about the feminist perspective, and why we think it is called for. And we move on from Manhattan, to South Grand Avenue in Detroit; to Hitsville, USA—Motown Records. Early summer, 1964, and Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson are worried. Motown has taken a tough hit, losing their top-selling artist, Mary Wells. These guys have no way of knowing it, but not to worry: Motown is just about to BLOW UP. And it’s the first female pop superstar, Diana Ross, who will touch off that explosion. We talk a bit about Berry, about the Motown Fun Factory, and about Diana. And we have to stop and wonder: why does a driven, ambitious man like Berry Gordy get called a visionary and a leader, but a driven and ambitious woman like Diana…well she gets called something else entirely. What’s the deal there? Then we head south, Deep South, to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and meet the Swampers. We hear from the effusive, fast-talking Atlantic Records Exec, Jerry Wexler. When Aretha comes over to Atlantic, it’s Wex who puts her together with the Swampers. It’s a magical moment, but it does not last. While there may have been cooperation and racial harmony in the studio, outside it’s still Alabama. That state is convulsed by the civil rights movement and the angry, hateful backlash it inspires. And it’s not just the state of Alabama; it is a tense and angry nation that awaits The Fire Next Time. We close out the show with a detailed look at the anguish and the glory of Aretha Franklin and her music. A holy blend; a terrible beauty: captured and preserved forever.

Today in 1972 Billboard magazine ran a cover story about a "new sound" emerging from Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  The "Muscle Shoals" sound--largely the result of a rhythm section later known as "The Swampers"--would have an incredible influence on the sound of popular music from that moment forward.  Learn more on today's "A Day in the Life."

The Shoals is a community in Northwest Alabama made up of four towns: Muscle Shoals, Florence, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia. Tucked in the foothills of the Tennessee River Valley, the Shoals is an hour from any interstate, and at least a two-hour drive from the nearest big cities—Nashville to the north and Birmingham to the south.   The Shoals is one of the most documented places in the world of music. The Rolling Stones, Wilson Pickett, the Allman Brothers, Bobbie Gentry, even the Osmond Brothers -- all made pilgrimages to record at legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, with locals like Percy Sledge and the Swampers, FAME's in-house rhythm section. But music is only part of the cultural story here. There's a rich food culture, too. On this Gravy Road trip, we take a look at two sides of that story, one a local icon and the other, a newer kid in town.
