'Cinema Degeneration Presents' is a podcast that aims to be an all-encompassing show that doesn't limit itself to one topic or genre. We'll be covering all sorts of movies, books, music and more. There will be solo reviews and group chats with multiple different guest hosts and interviews. Sometimes there will be themed segments such as "How The F$%k Did That Get Made", "The Good, The Bad, The Independent", "Why Is That Not Eric Roberts?" and iterations of past shows like Old Not Obsolete and This Is Your Brain On Film. For our 5th episode we are bringing you a celebration of the truly weird and utterly independent with a double feature of reviews. Starting off the festivities our solo host Cameron Scott does a short dive into the 1991 alien invasion slasher "THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE" that is surprisingly enough a first time watch for him. This weird slice of fried gold horror comedy is such a wild ride that we highly recommend wearing your seatbelts. {You have been pre-warned of the green alien slime!} This review is followed by a "How The F%$K Did That Get Made" segment with hosts and filmmakers Marcus Koch and Cameron Scott dissecting the 1980 cult classic "FORBIDDEN ZONE" directed by the legendary Richard Elfman and starring Susan Tyrrell, Herve Villechaiz ; and a supporting cast that includes Joe Spinell and Danny Elfman. Our hosts will take you on a trip through the mad and macabre musical adventures of a girl on a trip through the 6th Dimension through a portal in the family basement. This movie has to be seen to be believed. Join us in celebration the these two truly insane and definitely weird movie! "Why does it feel so good to be sooooo bad?"
Buckle up for one helluva journey as Wit returns to the show and we chat about William Friedkin's stonecold masterpiece Sorcerer. We laud the theater experience, try and unpack the various themes, and get into it about pacing verse length, all the while, wondering if we would even survive the treacherous journey through the Mexican jungle.

Give that Joe guy a raise! Everything else though.... Fanatic, released in 1982 and later distributed by Troma under the title The Last Horror Film, is an ambitious yet confused attempt at blending psychological thriller, horror, satire, and social commentary. Directed by David Winters, the film follows Vinny Durand (Joe Spinell), a socially awkward taxi driver in New York who dreams of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. Vinny's obsession with horror star Jana Bates (Caroline Munro) takes a dark turn when he follows her to the Cannes Film Festival, believing he can convince her to star in his debut film. Soon, people connected to Jana begin to disappear, leaving the audience to wonder if Vinny's fantasies have turned murderous. On the surface, Fanatic has all the trappings of a Taxi Driver knockoff, with Spinell's Vinny bearing eerie similarities to De Niro's Travis Bickle: a lonely man whose delusions of grandeur lead to a disturbing descent into obsession. However, where Taxi Driver offers a focused character study and searing critique of urban decay, Fanatic meanders between tones, never quite deciding what it wants to be. Is it a darkly comedic jab at the absurdity of the film industry, with its over-the-top Cannes sequences and caricatured players? A horror film dissecting the dangers of unchecked fandom? Or a social critique of anti-horror activists and censorship? The movie flirts with all these ideas but fails to commit to any, leaving the audience in a muddled state of uncertainty. There's undeniable charm in its chaotic ambition, but the result is a mishmash of clashing themes and tonal inconsistencies. What Fanatic does have, however, is Joe Spinell. His performance is nothing short of extraordinary, especially given the film's modest budget. Spinell imbues Vinny with a mix of vulnerability, creepiness, and manic energy that is utterly captivating. His ability to oscillate between pitiable and menacing elevates the film far beyond what one might expect from a low-budget production, especially one released by Troma. Spinell's portrayal is a masterclass in character work, showing what can be achieved even in a film with clear limitations. Despite its flaws, Fanatic has its moments of intrigue and campy fun. The Cannes backdrop offers a unique setting for a horror film, and there's an undeniable novelty in watching Spinell and Munro share the screen again after Maniac. But for all its ambition, Fanatic ultimately bites off more than it can chew. It's a film that tries to be everything and ends up being little more than a curiosity piece—worth watching for Spinell's mesmerizing performance, but a frustrating experience for those hoping for cohesion or a clear narrative purpose.
Episode Notes This week, Joe is absent so Todd & Steve take the reigns to discuss Maniac (1980) featuring the legendary Joe Spinell. They also review some 2024 films as the countdown to the year end episode approaches and they provide an update on the status of the squad's film The Final Episode. All that and more! It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. This week on the podcast, we dive into three very different films, starting with White Bird, directed by Marc Forster and starring Helen Mirren. The film follows Julian, a boy who has been struggling with guilt after being expelled for bullying Auggie Pullman. Julian's grandmother, played by Mirren, shares her powerful story of survival and first love in Nazi-occupied France. Next, we discuss Joker: Folie à Deux, the highly anticipated sequel to Joker, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Arthur Fleck returns as Joker, and this time, we meet Harley Quinn, his partner in chaos, as the two form a twisted bond within Arkham State Hospital. We also go back to the horror classic Maniac, directed by William Lustig and starring Joe Spinell. This gritty 1980 film follows a deranged killer on a bloody rampage through New York City, influenced by his traumatic childhood and obsession with his mother. Join Justin as he chats with director and producer Bill Lustig about the preservation of cult cinema, his uncle Jake “Raging Bull” LaMotta, jump-starting his career behind the scenes in adult films, Maniac, and more!William "Bill" Lustig bio:"William Lustig was born on February 1, 1955 in Bronx, New York. During his teenage years, Lustig avidly watched a huge volume of lowdown and trashy exploitation fare at numerous 42nd Street grind house theaters in Manhattan and also worked as a movie theater usher in Fort Lee, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, he took a few film classes at New York University.Lustig began his film career in his mid to late teens, working behind-the-scenes in various minor production capacities on a handful of hardcore X-rated porno pictures as well as a production assistant on both "The Seven Ups" and "Death Wish." He made his debut as a director, producer and editor with the hardcore porn features "Hot Honey" and "The Violation of Claudia." Lustig directed both of these movies under the alias Billy Bagg.In 1980, Lustig found himself at the center of a storm of controversy when he made the grim, gory and disturbing slasher sleaze splatter landmark "Maniac," which boasts an incredibly intense performance by the legendary character actor Joe Spinell as a vicious depraved psychopath and plenty of hideously graphic and gruesome make-up effects by horror genre icon Tom Savini. In 1982, Lustig followed up "Maniac" with the tough, gritty and exciting New York urban revenge opus "Vigilante." In 1988, he delivered another winner with the terrific "Maniac Cop," a violent horror action flick about an undead New York police officer on a killing spree which was the first of several cinematic collaborations with fellow maverick independent filmmaker Larry Cohen.Lustig followed up with the 1989 stirring action item "Hit List" and the suspenseful serial killer thriller "Relentless" were likewise on the money excellent and entertaining offerings. However, the two "Maniac Cop" sequels were strictly hit-or-miss affairs: the second one was a worthy successor to the superior original and the third one was a regrettably mediocre entry in the series. Lustig's last film as a director to date was the nifty and enjoyable fright flick "Uncle Sam."Since 1997, William Lustig went on to initially produce retrospective DVD documentaries for Anchor Bay and now currently runs the outstanding DVD label Blue Underground which restores and re-releases popular and little seen cult movies and other grind house action, drama, and horror films."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. 8 more 70's movie reviews in the can. Starting things off today with (Billy Jack 1971). This is a sequel to a 1967 film called Born Losers, and it is just out of our reach for us. Here is a movie written by the 2 stars in the film and directed by BJ himself. Seems like a real labor of love, and it's pretty great and we'll tell ya'll about it very shortly, or we already are and your reading while your listening, how can you do that? Before we move on BJ is a film about a safe haven and school for outcasts and people of color, where close minded murderous Hicks are just outside the border, waiting to be racist and horrible to the max, I do hope someone has amazing fighting skills hmmm. One more thing, Howard Hesseman……..Johnny Flippin Fever from WKRP is HERE in this film, however, we suck and said it was Venus Flytrap, sorry bout that icky rookie mistake, Venus was played by the amazing Tim Reid and he is not in this film. Moving on to (Duck, you sucker 1971) Here we have the awful man who will soon have no friends from Happy birthday Wanda June (Rod Steiger), and the gross reporter guy from Goldengirl, (James Coburn), starring in this film about how to become heroes in the Mexican revolution. Hmmmmmm, your gonna need an explosives expert. Next up is (The Outside Man 1972) which stars a focused French guy, the guy that wants the beaches closed and doesn't care about yer concession sales, the amazing Ann flippin Margaret, and Angie (dressed to kill) Dickinson. Here is a movie with the idea of action, with out a lot of it, 70's style. You get to see massive amounts of driving round L.A. You can see the old Venice amusement pier, some of the weird street characters, and one thing we wanted to mention but spaced it, was the appearance of public electric shaver in a bathroom, which seems unsanitary, hey, I gots time let's look it up….Time has passed, and the internet has failed me, or perhaps my use of it has failed. (Badge 373 1973) Verna Bloom, star of a western we all liked, The Hired Hand, is here with Robert Duvall, Henry Darrow, and Radical 60's n 70's activist and Young Lord Felipe Luciano. Here we have some competing actors and the inspirational Felipe, kinda stuck in some budget cop movie, based on the guy whose budget cop stories also inspired the French connection character of Popeye D. Onward we strut to the light and uplifting Ingmar Bergman classic (Scenes from a Marriage 1974), almost too heavy to get into, but I don't really have to, I'll just skim that surface for you and move on. You've got amazing acting, directing, and cinematography, a good script etc. I wonder what could ever go wrong with a film focused on and icky relationship, through the years. He is horrid to the max, and it is worthwhile to examine relationships and the social norms and conditioning that live inside them. Gosh it was just difficult for your beloved D.U.I. crew to get through. Come with us now to 1975 with (Rancho Deluxe). Rancho Deluxe, is the Slim Pickens holy grail that I didn't even know I was looking for. Now, you have other stuff goin on here, like Starman (Jeff Bridges) and the dad from Serial Mom (Sam Waterson) are trying to pay rent and piss off a bull baron guy, although Bridges is slumming it, so to speak. Also serial mom's dad's Dad is played by Joe Spinell and he steals the dang show for the scene he's in. Lot's of good talent here, but is it good, or great, listen to find out? Second to last today we review (Outlaw Josey Wales 1976) a puzzling film directed by Clint Eastwood starring Sondra Locke, and Chief mother flippin Dan George, that's it. Finally today we enjoy (Corevette Summer 1978) “It's not even his car, it belongs to the school, It's not even your car!!” This film has Mary Jo Shively from designing woman, and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars confronting the guy from Laser Blast to return the schools hot rod, back to the school. Thank you for listening, reach us on instagram and Facebook

Today we're venturing into the B-movie vault to tackle what may well be my favorite Star Wars ripoff in Luigi Cozzi's wildly entertaining Starcrash! This one's got Joe Spinell as a Darth Vader wannabe, Christopher Plummer as the Emperor, The Hoff in one of his earliest roles, and the inimitable Caroline Munro traversing space in a bikini years before Leia would don one on Jabba's barge! In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie review Carrie, Case and Jake tip back some French wine, revisiting the late great Joe Spinell and arguably his best performance ever in the film that was permit-less, shot guerilla style at the Cannes Film Festival circa 1981: The Last Horror Film aka Fanatic (the title as shown in the beginning) aka Maniac II: Love to Kill (no, not the real Maniac II: Mr. Robbie that never was). We can't forget about Scream Queen Caroline Munro here at arguably the height of her fame. This film and its dream sequences featuring an intense dramatic performance by Spinell get you thinking and raising questions. How would you categorize this film? What does avant-garde mean exactly? And where do you land with "elevated horror?" In Segment 2, Horror Etc we briefly discuss the films featured at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival and Carrie tries to talk about her day-trip to Cannes circa 2000.
We warned you not to go out tonight! This week, Peaches and Michael are getting positively 42nd Steet for their Idol Worship celebration of William Lustig! In this far ranging discussion, Lustig shares behind the scenes stories from the making of MANIAC, the MANIAC COP series, and beyond, as well as reflects on his lifetime of love for cinema. From wild stunts to late night phone calls from Joe Spinell, this episode has it all! Go!

Justin timms @justin_timms is the Creative Director of Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and Co-Founder of Yellow Veil Pictures. BK Horror kicked off last night beginning its annual survey of the genre at Nitehawk. This is NYC's preeminent genre fest, akin to Fantastic, Fantasia, Beyond, Sitges. Justin saw this gap ten years ago and filled it beautifully. The festival has packed screenings and after parties every night. They cover all the ground, prems and favs from festivals like Sundance, features and shorts. Restorations of important horror classics and classes with Miskatonic. This year they're commencing a new award with the first honoree Bill Lustig. Maniac is probably tied with Wolfen to me as favorite NYC horror movie, but also one of my favorite movies period. Joe Spinell in the greatest horror performance ever, period. Yellow Veil's slate is exploding this year, ramping up more releases than ever before, all killer no filler. One of the most iconic production companies in the history of horror, Hammer's productions and various sequels and spin-offs of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman and the mummy are not just beloved by generations of genre fans but have endured just as the Universal Studios monster films have and become a lauded part of cinema history. And Hammer didn't just do classic monsters! Some of their original films such as “The Devil Rides Out” and “Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter” showed that Hammer wasn't afraid to step outside their formula. Hammer also provided career-making roles for several of the genres most beloved stars with Christopher Lee's towering take on Dracula and Peter Cushing's often scene-stealing performances as Doctor Frankenstein and Van Helsing. The studio also had its share of dynamic leading ladies with legends such as Ingrid Pitt, Stephanie Beacham and Barbara Shelley. And that's barely scratching the surface. Our guest in this episode is one of Hammer's great leading ladies. And a Bond Girl. And a Scream Queen. Today we are joined by the radiant and brilliant, Caroline Munro. Caroline was one of few actors to be signed to a contract by Hammer, something that wasn't really a practice for the studio but they knew what they had with Caroline. An actor whose beauty is matched by her chops, her presence and her character. Caroline discusses her approach to the acting process, what she learned by working off screen legends such as Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Richard Widmark, the insecurity that is possessed by almost all actors and stealing scenes at the Cannes Film Festival with the great Joe Spinell. Let's bare our fangs and get ready to dance on a Sunday with Caroline Munro! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Welcome to Saturday Night Slashers This episode I review 1981's Maniac. A movie that is famous for it's graphic violence and an incredible twist ending. This film also marks Joe Spinell's first lead role. This preform was so great that Spinell soon got more leads in horror films.
