Driving around rural areas of the Northeast, it's not uncommon to see an occasional home or vehicle displaying a Confederate battle flag. Look closer, and you might find symbols of far right groups like the Proud Boys or the Three Percenters, both classified as hate groups.Reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch decided to dig further. They spent months investigating the reach of the far right movement in rural upstate New York. They found law enforcement officers who are members of the extremist “constitutional sheriffs” movement who vow that they will not enforce state laws with which they disagree. These include laws relating to gun rights and public health. And they found a man who went to prison for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and anticipates a military takeover during the 2024 election and a third world war.Russell and Hirsch also crisscrossed the district represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY. Stefanik has amplified far right views, such as the white supremacist Great Replacement Theory and the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Stefanik is frequently mentioned as a potential vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump in the 2024 election.This investigation into the far right extremist movement in upstate New York is the subject of a remarkable five-part podcast from North Country Public Radio called “If All Else Fails,” which is hosted by Russell and Hirsch.This Vermont Conversation includes the first episode of If All Else Fails, broadcast by permission of North Country Public Radio, followed by a conversation with reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch.“As we saw on Jan. 6, it only took a couple thousand people to suspend our democratic process for hours and force an evacuation from the Capitol,” Russell told the Vermont Conversation.“Even if folks who have gone down these rabbit holes may be a minority in this country, if you get enough of them riled up, they can do a tremendous amount of damage to our democracy in the U.S.,” Russell said.

In 2022, the sheriff of Lewis County, New York, changed his Facebook profile to a picture of him holding up an award he won from the Oath Keepers. The post was after Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was arrested and charged for his role in the January 6 insurrection. This got North Country Public Radio reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch interested in learning more about the far-right movement upstate. What they found out is the subject of the podcast, If All Else Fails, and the first episode is out now. Hirsch and Russell join us to discuss.

Acclaimed musician Josh Ritter discusses "The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All," his new novel about a young boy coming of age among lumberjacks in turn-of-the-20th-century Idaho. And, many members of New York's Mohawk tribe helped build the NYC skyline, including the Twin Towers. They also saw the towers fall and participated in the cleanup and rescue mission. North Country Public Radio's Ana Williams-Bergen spoke with some Mohawk steelworkers as they look back to that fateful time 20 years ago.

A lot of high school experiences were lost last year because of the pandemic — graduations, proms and musicals. Now, one school is reclaiming a show they thought they'd lost. The coronavirus pandemic has forced most child care centers to close in an upstate New York community where affordable options for families were already in short supply. That’s having a ripple effect on the local workforce and economy. (Nov 22, 2016) In February 2016, North Country Public Radio teamed up with the Adirondack Center for Writing to bring true life storytelling to locations across the region. We started with Saranac Lake and moved the Howl Story Slam to a dozen locations from Canton to Old Forge, Plattsburgh to North Creek.At each slam, we selected a few winners and they came together on September 24, 2016 at Pickens Hall in Heuvelton, NY for the season's finale. We begin with Rick Chandler, who we first heard in Saranac Lake, with a story about boxing, high school and self-awareness.

Hillary is accused of strangling 12-year-old Garrett Phillips to death nearly five years ago, in a case that's grabbed national headlines. Reporters from North Country Public Radio have been following it from the start. They'll be your guide to what's happening in the courtroom each day.

An expansive discussion on the climate, past and future: the weight of humanity on natural systems, repercussions of temperature and sea level rise, the future of the amazon, the history of salmon and northwest forests, and more. Curt Stager is an ecologist, paleoclimatologist, and science journalist with a Ph.D. in biology and geology from Duke University (1985). Stager blends the long-term perspective of a climate historian and multidisciplinary outlook of a biologist-geologist with the communication skills of a lifelong teacher and writer. He has published over three dozen peer-reviewed articles in major journals and has written extensively for general audiences in periodicals such as National Geographic, New York Times, Fast Company, and Adirondack Life.  Since 1990, he has also co-hosted Natural Selections, a weekly science program on North Country Public Radio. He currently teaches at Paul Smith's College in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, and holds a research associate post at the University of Maine's Climate Change Institute, where he continues to investigate the long-term history of climate in Africa, South America, and the northeastern United States.
