Lord Northcliffe, born Alfred Harmsworth, was a self-made newspaper mogul who recognized aviation's strategic importance early on. In 1913, his newspaper, the Daily Mail, offered a £10,000 prize for the first non-stop transatlantic flight, realizing that aviation meant Britain was "no longer an island." Though the First World War suspended the challenge, it was reignited in 1919. The Vickers team was led by John "Jack" Alcock, a working-class mechanic from Manchester whose obsession with engines led him to become one of Britain's greatest pilots. He partnered with Arthur Whitten Brown, known as Ted, an American citizen and electrical engineer who had survived a harrowing war experience, including being shot down twice. Despite their different temperaments—Alcock was outgoing while Brownwas quiet and diffident—the two veterans shared a determination to achieve a great gesture for the future of aviation. (1/4)1907

The 1919 competition attracted diverse aviators, including the Australian Harry Hawker, a fearless and sometimes "spiky" test pilot. Inspired by watching Harry Houdini fly in 1910, Hawker became a natural pilot who understood risks instinctively, even while hiding a secret and painful spinal injury from past crashes. He was joined by rivals like Fred Raynham, a quiet pilot with steely resolve who had survived a mid-flight tail snap during the war. The end of the war had destroyed the market for military aircraft overnight, forcing companies like Sopwith to build motorcycles and kitchenware to survive. Consequently, Northcliffe's prize offered a vital way to promote civil aviation. In contrast to these striving young pilots, Admiral Mark Kerr led a team for Handley Page. Born in a palace to an illustrious naval family, Kerr maintained a sharp class distinction, refusing to collaborate with his younger rivals. (2/4)1968 APOLLO 8

WA Police have acknowledged that earlier searches in the investigation into the Nannup Four were conducted in the wrong location. Retired detective Barry McIntosh, who has long pushed for answers in the case, believes the corrected coordinates point to a more accurate search area near Northcliffe, where clothing and the reported smell of human remains were allegedly detected after the group disappeared. Bonnie finished her amazing Paddle Of Aus yesterday morning at Northcliffe Beach. There was a great turnout for her as she ran to the finish line. However, Flan picked up on 1 thing.. she started at Mermaid Beach and finished at Northcliffe – just short of 3kms. Bonnie says she got some friends together yesterday afternoon to finish the job. Ali thanks Bonnie for the awareness she's generated for mental health. Bonnie admits that even on her Paddle Of Aus she has those times where she was struggling mentally out there. Today’s podcast is a Delirious West special. The Delirious West is a 200 mile race in Western Australia. The Delirious W.E.S.T. is run almost entirely on the Bibbulmun Track in the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia from the old logging settlement of Northcliffe, to the Historic port city of Albany. The event took place from Wed 19 February with a 104hr cut off, runners having until 3pm Sunday 23 February to make their way to the finish line at the Great Southern Distillery Company in Albany. The Delirious traverses some of the most remarkable forests, unforgiving coastal scrub, stunning beaches, water crossings and some of nature’s finest landscapes along the World Famous Bibbulmun track. Sarah and Kristen both raced the Delirious West, and they both had very different races! Sarah was first female (and third overall) in a record-breaking time of 71 hours and 35 minutes. Kirsten was the last runner and finished in a time of 103 hours and 50 minutes. They both challenged themselves and got the best they could out of themselves.
