Catch the full-length interview next week on the Mike Hosking Breakfast. Boris Johnson is condemning the British Labour Government's moves to hike taxes on the wealthy. High earners, wealthy foreigners, and businesses are facing $86 billion of extra taxes to fund public services like the National Health Service. Speaking exclusively to Mike Hosking, Johnson —the British PM from 2019 to 2022— says Sir Keir Starmer's government should be looking to cut the public service instead. He says putting up taxes, without reforming the public service, at a time when the UK state has already expanded massively, is "insane". See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pretty much a ramble. It's my last podcast from the farm. It's been a difficult 6 months, but like all Americans, we fight through the difficult times. A couple of corrections: I called the author of the "Trump Dossier" Michael Steele. That's the sellout former head of the RNC, now prominently on CNN and MSNBC. The quintessential "never Trumper". It was Christopher Steele. A Former British spy and on the payroll of the Clinton campaign in 2016. Which is highly illegal. Later I mention Article 1 of the Constitution is the Legislative Branch, but move to the Executive Branch, without noting that is Article 2. I address it a few minutes later, but listening to it, might be confusing. I recommend listening at 1.5 or 2 times the playback speed. In addition to Friday being International Women's Day, March is Women's History Month, and that seemed the perfect time to have this series I've been concocting in my brain for a while called Women in Power. I am so proud and happy to share my conversations with you! Also, at the end of each episode in this series, I'll be sharing three books by three female writers whose collections I love, so stick around after the interview for that. Our first guest in the Women in Power series is a legend in the magazine space: Alexandra Shulman, who was editor-in-chief of British Vogue for 25 years. A full quarter century! She is the longest-serving editor in the position and took the helm in 1992; she has become one of the U.K.'s most respected voices in fashion since. Her 25 years at the top of the masthead included many iconic issues of the magazine, like the December 1999 “Millennium Issue,” which became the highest-selling issue of Vogue. You'll hear me speak about this with her, but I always respected Alexandra's stance that the magazine never publish pieces on diets or cosmetic surgery, as she didn't want to tell women a specific way they should look. While still editor in-chief, she published a novel, Can We Still Be Friends?, in 2012, and in 2016, highlighting British Vogue's centenary year, she published the book Inside Vogue: My Diary of Vogue's 100th Year. In January 2017, nearing the quarter-century mark in her role, it was announced that she would leave her role that June, and she was succeeded as editor-in-chief by Edward Enninful. Since then, she has published a memoir I loved called Clothes And Other Things That Matter, which came out in 2021. Today we talk about what she's up to these days (and it's a lot!), what she's reading, and, of course, about her time at Vogue.   By Alexandra Shulman: Can We Still Be Friends? Inside Vogue: My Diary of Vogue's 100th Year Clothes…And Other Things That Matter   Alexandra's recommendations: Orbital by Samantha Harvey Slow Horses by Mick Herron   My “Leave You with Three” picks today: Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert Untamed by Glennon Doyle + Together Rising

YOU can boost your happiness and transform the lives of people in one African village with a cash gift by going to givedirectly.org/happiness Giving money to others makes you happier than spending the same cash on yourself. That's been proved by science. But new research also shows that giving people in need cold hard cash is an amazing way to help them improve their lives. We explore why trusting people to help themselves is a cheaper and more effective way to solve poverty - and hear about Kibobo in Rwanda, where any money you donate will have a huge impact.    Read more about Kibobo at givedirectly.org/happiness   Former British politician Rory Stewart used to manage billions of dollars in aid money - and like other international donors thought poor people needed to be told what to do with charitable gifts. He was shocked how effective no-strings-attached cash turned out to be, and now promotes "giving directly". He was also surprised how good giving away even small amounts of money made him feel.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nearly two years ago Americans hastily left Afghanistan and the Taliban took over. Any hope that this Taliban might be a more moderate version has all but vanished. The rights of women and girls are continuously under assault. Secondary schools are still closed for girls and the latest edict closed beauty salons, not just a place of work but one of the last all-women spaces for socializing. Gordon Brown was Britain's Prime Minister during the war in Afghanistan. He is now making a bold declaration that the denial of female education and any rights for women in Afghanistan should be declared a crime against humanity. In an op-ed for Britain's Guardian newspaper, he is calling on world leaders to unite against the Taliban's repression of women and girls.
