Send us a textWhat is liberal education? It's the prompt that has launched one thousand essays, and in a 1959 lecture at the University of Chicago, the (in)famous Leo Strauss gave his answer. Despite fleeing Nazi Germany and coming to the United States, Strauss wasn't afraid of criticizing the positivism, historicism, and relativism of the American academy. And as is evident in reading his lecture "What is Liberal Education?" neither was he afraid of calling into question the value and feasibility of modern democracy. Wyoming Catholic College professor Pavlos Papadopoulos joins Jonathan and Ryan to discuss Strauss, his relation to the Great Books movement, and his views on the relation between liberal education and mass democratic society.Leo Strauss's What Is Liberal Education? https://archive.org/details/LeoStraussOnLiberalEducation/Strauss-WhatIsLiberalEducation/Josef Pieper's Leisure, The Basis of Culture: https://bookshop.org/a/25626/9781586172565New Humanists is brought to you by the Ancient Language Institute: https://ancientlanguage.com/Links may have referral codes, which earn us a commission at no additional cost to you. In 2009, the body of a former president of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, was stolen from his grave. The Time of the Cannibals reconsiders this history and the public discourse on it to reconsider how we think about conspiracy theory, and specifically, what it means to understand conspiracy theories “in context.” The months after Papadopoulos's body was stolen saw intense public speculation in Cyprus, including widespread expressions of sacrilege, along with many false accusations against Cypriots and foreigners positioned as his political antagonists. Davis delves into the public discourse on conspiracy theory in Cyprus that flourished in the aftermath, tracing theories about the grave robbery to theories about the division of Cyprus some thirty-five years earlier, and both to longer histories of imperial and colonial violence. Along the way, Davis explores cross-contextual connections among Cyprus and other locales, in the form of conspiracy theories as well as political theologies regarding the dead bodies of political leaders. Through critical close readings of academic and journalistic approaches to conspiracy theory, Davis shows that conspiracy theory as an analytic object fails to sustain comparative analysis, and defies any general theory of conspiracy theory. What these approaches accomplish instead, she argues, is the perpetuation of ethnocentrism in the guise of contextualization. The Time of the Cannibals: On Conspiracy Theory and Context (Fordham UP, 2024) asks what better kind of contextualization this and any “case” call for, and proposes the concept of conspiracy attunement: a means of grasping the dialogic contexts in which conspiracy theories work recursively as matters of political and cultural significance in the long durée. Elizabeth Anne Davis is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. Her research and writing, grounded in the European horizons and the Ottoman history of the Greek-speaking world, focus on the intersections of psyche, body, history, and power. In this episode, Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Dr. Pavlos Papadopoulos dive into Plato's Crito, a dialogue set in Socrates' prison cell as he awaits execution. They explore Socrates' refusal to escape, his debt of gratitude to Athens, and the tension between philosophy and the polis's poetic traditions. Through engaging analysis, they unpack the dialogue's themes of justice, piety, and civic obligation, offering insights for first-time readers and drawing parallels to modern liberal democracy.Dr. Pavlos Papadopoulos, Assistant Professor of Humanities at Wyoming Catholic College, joins the episode. With a BA from St. John's College and a PhD in politics from the University of Dallas, he brings expertise in Plato, having written his dissertation on the philosopher.Visit thegreatbookspodcast.com for our reading schedule!Visit our COLLECTION of written guides on the works of Plato!Summary:The questions explored about Plato's Crito reveal key themes of justice, piety, gratitude, and the tension between philosophy and the polis. Socrates' imprisonment, set against Athens' cultural life governed by the poetic myth of Theseus, underscores the conflict between philosophical inquiry and the city's traditional piety, highlighting philosophy's precarious role in a society shaped by poetry. His dream of a woman prophesying his arrival in Phthia, echoing Achilles' fates, reframes his acceptance of death as a philosophical heroism, prioritizing justice over survival. Crito's arguments for escape, rooted in emotional appeals to public opinion and familial duty, contrast with Socrates' rational defense of his obligation to Athens, articulated through the laws as a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid, distinguishing his view of the city as a fatherland from modern social contract theory's individualistic framework. The laws' warning that escape would “destroy” the polis emphasizes the necessity of upholding civic order, while Athens' allowance of philosophy, despite its antagonism, parallels liberal democracy's permissive yet flawed support for diverse pursuits. The references to the Corybantes and God at the dialogue's end subtly integrate divine sanction with rational argument, affirming Socrates' serene commitment to justice as both a philosophical and spiritual act, challenging first-time readers to consider the interplay of individual conscience, civic duty, and divine order in navigating moral dilemmas.Check out YOUTUBE page and our COLLECTION of guides!

In this revealing episode of Steel News, we dissect the silent architect behind Russiagate — Joseph Mifsud — and explore why his disappearance and deliberate omission from the Durham report point toward a high-level intelligence operation. Adding a new revelation: declassified documents show that former President Obama publicly endorsed the CIA's assessment of Russian interference before the official report was even finalized (Conservative Brief). What does this mean for the narrative's legitimacy? We'll explore:• The origins of Russiagate and its real architects.• Who's still in the picture — and who's gone dark: Mifsud, Brennan, Clapper, Comey.• What George Papadopoulos knows vs. what General Flynn knows.• The future plans of George and Simona — are they rewriting their stories?• Who's pulling the strings now?Presented in partnership with: American Made Foundation & American Made Actionhttps://AmericanMadeFoundation.orghttps://AmericanMadeAction.orgMake sure you follow Ann Vandersteel on Pickax - https://pickax.com/annvandersteelMaverick Broadcasting Network benefits when you shop with the following companies:MY GOLD GUY - https://mygoldguy.com/mbnAs inflation surges and global elites toy with our financial future, My Gold Guy empowers you to safeguard your wealth with physical gold and silver – a real asset for real Americans. It was an expensive week for Tesla. On Friday, a jury in Miami found the electric car company 33% to blame for a deadly 2019 crash involving its full self-driving feature, ordering it to pay a total of $242.5 million in damages. A few days later, the company’s board said it would dole out a $30 billion stock payoff to co-founder Elon Musk in order to keep him focused on the company, which has been bouncing from crisis to crisis. In this episode of Elon, Inc., host David Papadopoulos is joined by Bloomberg Elon Musk reporter Dana Hull, Bloomberg Businessweek’s Max Chafkin as well as Missy Cummings, an academic and former senior adviser for safety at the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who was called as an expert witness during the trial. Together, they discuss the possible consequences for the company flowing from the verdict, with Cummings warning it’s yet another roadblock for fully self-driving cars. Papadopoulos, Hull and Chafkin also discuss that monster payout to Musk. Later, Papadopoulos, Chafkin and Bloomberg News reporter Kiel Porter discuss Porter’s latest story on The Boring Company, Musk’s largely stalled endeavor to build underground “hyperloops.” Although the tunnel-digging venture recently scored a contract to build a loop connecting Nashville’s airport with its downtown, Porter’s paints a picture of a struggling company that—in true Muskian fashion—promises more than it can deliver. And the challenges are mounting. All the company has to show for its labors is a small loop that takes people to and from the Las Vegas Convention Center. When asked by Papadopoulos about the company’s falling valuation—now hovering at around $6.4 billion, down from a high of $8.6 billion in July 2023—Porter is direct. “They were supposed to have 68 miles dug in Vegas. It was supposed to be this huge interconnected lattice, and instead you got less than four operational miles,” he says. “It doesn’t take a genius to look at that and go, ‘why am I investing in this?’”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Téměř všechny chytré hodinky dnes měří tepovou frekvenci, saturaci krve kyslíkem a počet kroků.

On this week’s episode, David Papadopoulos invites Bloomberg political reporter Nancy Cook and Bloomberg Businessweek’s Max Chafkin to the studio to discuss Elon Musk’s latest idea—the creation of the “America Party.” Third parties have famously been losing propositions in American politics, and Cook questions if the distractible multibillionaire even has the patience to handle the paperwork required to register with the Federal Election Commission. And then there’s his constant string of controversies. Chafkin wonders if there’s a reliable base out there hungry to support the party of a man who called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, initiated a feud with President Donald Trump (still popular with much of Musk’s theoretical rank and file) and whose “DOGE” initiative on Trump’s behalf is accused by some of worsening the catastrophic consequences of the recent flooding in Texas. Nevertheless, history shows just how disruptive third parties can be when the margins are slim, as they are now. Cook sees a small slice of the electorate, “tech bros who are like, ‘oh, right, we should cut Social Security, we should shrink the federal government’,” who could possibly be converted by the right wing business mogul. Later in the show, Papadopoulos and Chafkin are joined by Bloomberg stocks reporter Esha Dey to discuss the latest gyrations of the world’s most prominent meme stock, Tesla. The trio discuss the challenges facing the electric car company and dissect a recent eyebrow-raising note from analyst Dan Ives. Trump Suggests an Elon Deportation, Tesla Shakes up Management

Elon, Inc.

The predictable second round of Elon Musk’s feud with Donald Trump began over the weekend as the Tesla CEO took aim at the GOP’s massive tax-and-spend bill. Specifically irking Musk (along with efforts to gut incentives to buy his cars) is the amount of money the bill would add to the $37 trillion national debt ($3.3 trillion over a decade, according to a new estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office). Trump initially kept his replies to the richest man on Earth muted, but as the South Africa-native’s broadsides piled up, the notoriously thin-skinned Republican president could no longer help himself. Trump blew up and not only threatened to withdraw government subsidies from Musk’s companies but said he would mull whether to try and “denaturalize” Musk and deport him. Meanwhile, Musk suggested he’d support primary challenges to any Republican lawmaker who supported the bill, and returned to the idea of starting a third party—called the America Party (of course). To make sense of all the chaos, Bloomberg national correspondent Joshua Green joins David Papadopoulos on this week’s episode of Elon, Inc. Green argues that—despite Musk’s hundreds of billions of dollars and hundreds of millions of social media followers (and bots)—there isn’t a huge constituency out there for a third party. Green also outlines the roots of a mini-campaign within Trump’s ultra-right wing base to get Musk deported, discusses Musk’s chances of actually convincing any lawmakers in the House (now that the Senate has passed the bill) to change their vote on Trump’s tax bill and predicts how many more rounds are left between him and his (one-time) biggest campaign donor. Papadopoulos also calls up Musk reporter Dana Hull to talk about about fresh challenges for Tesla. With several recent high-profile leadership exits, a flawed robotaxi rollout and sagging sales, things aren’t looking rosy for the electric carmaker ahead of tomorrow’s quarterly sales numbers. “They might only sell like a million and a half units this year; that’s like a far cry from the 20 million that they once talked about” Hull notes. Finally, Trump wasn’t the only subject of a Musk feuds this week. Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum recently threatened legal action against SpaceX due to debris from a rocket explosion sweeping in across the border from Texas. Is Musk’s space technology company ready for a spat with one of the few world leaders who has managed to tame Trump? Bloomberg Executive Editor Crayton Harrison joins for the full story. Over the weekend, while the world was transfixed by war in the Middle East, the Tesla Robotaxi quietly appeared on the streets of Austin, Texas. It didn’t stay quiet for long, though. As a handful of Tesla influencers filmed themselves driven through the streets of the red state’s famously blue capital, their smartphone videos caught plenty of traffic violations. In this week’s episode David Papadopoulos is joined by Max Chafkin as well as Bloomberg electric vehicles reporter Kara Carlson to break down the launch. Years in the making, and with rivals like Waymo already familiar sights in some big US cities, will Elon Musk be able to spin this as something other than a tepid attempt at catch-up? Tesla investors seem to think so: the stock jumped 8.2% on Monday. Papadopoulos and Chafkin are then joined by Bloomberg social media reporter Kurt Wagner, just back from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Wagner discusses X’s participation, or rather absence, from the all-important advertising event, and goes through how Musk’s embattled social media platform has reportedly tried to strong-arm advertisers to return by threatening lawsuits. This prompted Papadopoulos to speculate about the equivalent situation for hot dog vendors or shovel salesmen. Lastly, the crew discuss a few additional news item from the week, namely an exploding SpaceX rocket and the recent report that Musk doesn’t use a computer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last year was a big year for Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain implant company, seeing as it made headlines by successfully inserting a chip into a human’s brain. And while there are other companies in the field of neurotechnology, Neuralink has received outsized attention thanks to its deeply controversial founder. His ultimate ambitions are lofty—including characteristically extreme claims of products that can enable mental control of robotic limbs or substitute spoken communication all together. But brainwave-powered chess aside, as the South Africa native becomes more famous (or infamous) for his role as President Donald Trump’s government-gutting deputy than co-founder of an embattled electric car company, Neuralink has managed to endure his notoriety. We start the Interview by talking about Dr. Cavalli's work on Polycomb function in maintaining chromatin states and how it relates to gene regulation. He shares insights from his early lab experiences, where he aimed to understand the inheritance mechanisms of chromatin states through various models, including the FAB7 cellular memory module. The discussion uncovers how Polycomb proteins can silence gene expression and the complex interplay between different epigenetic factors that govern this process. Dr. Cavalli also addresses how he has investigated the recruitment mechanisms of Polycomb complexes, highlighting the roles of several DNA-binding proteins, including DSP-1 and GAGA factor, in this intricate regulatory landscape. He emphasizes the evolution of our understanding of Polycomb recruitment, illustrating the multifactorial nature of this biological puzzle. As the conversation progresses, we explore Dr. Cavalli's fascinating research into the three-dimensional organization of the genome. He explains his contributions to mapping chromosomal interactions within Drosophila and the distinctions observed when performing similar studies in mammalian systems. Key findings regarding topologically associated domains (TADs) and their association with gene expression are presented, alongside the implications for our understanding of gene regulation in development and disease.   References Déjardin, J., Rappailles, A., Cuvier, O., Grimaud, C., Decoville, M., Locker, D., & Cavalli, G. The DOGE Team of MAGA Billionaires Takes Shape

There have been a lot of raised eyebrows over Elon Musk's “DOGE” (not the cryptocurrency), short for Trump 2.0's “Department of Government Efficiency.” It's Donald Trump's project for Musk: he's assigned his wealthiest donor the task of cutting government spending by about $2 trillion (most of which is constitutionally up to Congress, but anyway...), in part by gutting or eliminating key regulatory agencies. The DOGE will be co-led by former presidential candidate, fellow tech entrepreneur and now full-on Trump acolyte Vivek Ramaswamy. Recent reporting has revealed a whole team of Trumpian billionaires, investors and tech personalities willing to join the feeding frenzy—a veritable Avengers team of MAGA fiscal expenditure. On the latest episode of Elon, Inc., David Papadopoulos and Max Chafkin break down who's who behind the scenes of the DOGE team, and try to figure out what, if anything, it can do or what Musk's end goal is.  The episode also includes a live recording in London from October with Papadopoulos, Chafkin and social media expert Devika Shanker-Grandpierre. The trio discuss the global consequences of Musk's lax content moderation on X. To top things off, David confronts Max with Musk's latest ploy: a suggestion that the billionaire should buy MSNBC. It may sound far fetched but, as David points out, didn't the purchase of Twitter also start out as a joke? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dcn. Garlick and Adam Minihan are joined by Dr. Pavlos Papadopoulos of Wyoming Catholic College to discuss BOOK THIRTEEN of the Odyssey. Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for more. From our guide: 73. What happens in book thirteen?King Alcinous makes good on his promise and sends Odysseus back to Ithaca (13.108). Odysseus sleeps the whole way home (13.91), and the Phaeacians lay a sleeping Odysseus on the beach and leave (13.133). Poseidon, meanwhile, convinces Zeus to punish the Phaeacians for their hospitality and aid of Odysseus (13.142). Back in Ithaca, Odysseus awakes and fears he's been hoodwinked by the Phaeacians and must now suffer yet another unknown island (13.227). Athena, under the guise of a shepherd boy, tells Odysseys he's on Ithaca (13.252), and he spins for her some grand tale regarding his background (13.290). Athena reveals herself, and she and Odysseus enjoy a warm conversation about her role in bringing him back to his home (13.329). She helps him hide his treasure in a cave (13.412), and then they sit to plot the death of the suitors (13.429). The book ends with Athena telling Odysseus to go to his loyal servant, the swineherd, and she leaves for Sparta to call Telemachus home (13.449). 74. Why are the Phaeacians punished?Poseidon tells Zeus that the Phaeacians helping Odysseus is a sign of disrespect, and that the Phaeacians should be punished (13.142). Zeus says they are in Poseidon's power, and Poseidon plans to destroy the ship that brought Odysseus home and “pile a huge mountain” around the Phaeacian port (13.166). Zeus suggests that Poseidon wait to destroy the ship in front of the Phaeacian people (13.174), and Poseidon does just this (13.181). The Phaeacians, in turn, recall the prophecy that one day Poseidon would be angry with them for escorting men home across the sea (13.194). Homer leaves the narrative untold with King Alcinous leading his people in sacrifices to Poseidon to hopefully avoid the mountain being placed on their port (13.207).Why does Zeus, who oversees guest-friendship, allow the Phaeacians to be punished for helping Odysseus? It should be recalled the Phaeacians are close to Poseidon, as both King Alcinous and Queen Arete are his descendants. Moreover, it should be noted that King Alcinous and the Phaeacians continued to abide by guest-friendship and assist strangers who landed on their island even when they knew about the prophecy—which may inform why King Alcinous was originally hesitant to assist Odysseus when he first fell at the knees of Queen Arete. Zeus' suggestion that the ship be destroyed in view of the Phaeacians may be seen as an opportunity for pity and reconciliation, as it allows the Phaeacians to understand what is happening and make sacrifices to Poseidon.Check out more: thegreatbookspodcast.com
