The Government's plans to introduce a citizenship test is being labelled as a waste of taxpayer money. Applicants would have to answer 20 questions on our history, politics and laws, and get 15 correct to pass. The test will be imposed for people seeking New Zealand citizenship from late next year. New Zealand Immigration Law Principal Lawyer Aaron Martin told Ryan Bridge the Coalition's just trying to make itself look good ahead of the election. He says we've got bigger problems that need to be addressed, rather than a pop quiz in a citizenship test. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's potential for the immigration system to become bogged down in bureaucracy as the Government pushes a harder line stance. It's proposed a series of reforms, involving a greater use of deportation and harsher penalties for migrant exploitation. NZ Immigration Law Principal Lawyer Aaron Martin says by making more people potentially liable for deportation, we'll likely see the number of cases and investigations going up. He told Mike Hosking one issue that hasn't really been explored is the low threshold of offending that makes someone liable for deportation, which needs to be reviewed. Martin says that an incident a citizen would be fined for would see someone on a visa put through the expensive exercise of deportation liability investigations, and potentially appeals, which ties up taxpayer resources. What if the secret to scaling your firm isn't hiring more staff but stripping it back to the essentials? In this powerful episode, Bridgit Norris sits down with Karen Ansen, Principal Lawyer and Founder of Ignite HR and Employment Law, who brings over 20 years of experience guiding high-pressure organizations through complex employment law while building cultures where people actually thrive.Today, she runs a lean, highly profitable practice from Australia's East Coast, handling some of the toughest employee relations cases without the chaos of a big team. You'll hear how she reclaimed her health, freedom, and profit by redefining growth on her own terms—and why you can too. This conversation isn't about theory; it's about practical choices that could help you build a firm that serves your life instead of consuming it.If you've ever wondered whether “more” is really worth it, this episode will change the way you think about success.Key Takeaways from Bridgit and Karen:1. Consider Scaling Back Instead of UpGrowth isn't always about adding more people; it can also mean reducing complexity.By streamlining, you make space to focus on the work that delivers the most value and satisfaction.2. Guard Your Time RelentlesslyYour time is your most limited resource, and boundaries are what protect it.When you control your availability, you preserve energy while still serving clients effectively.3. Price to Reflect Value, Not Just DemandA quick “yes” from a client often signals underpricing.Adjusting fees upward reinforces your worth and ensures your practice stays financially healthy.4. Build Psychological Safety Into CultureHigh-performing teams don't thrive on pressure alone; they thrive on trust. When people feel safe to speak openly, they contribute more and stay longer.5. Align Your Firm With Your Life GoalsSuccess is hollow if it costs your health or peace of mind. When your business is designed around your life priorities, freedom and profit can exist together. "You ask every single business owner that ever started a business, they want freedom. That's all they want. It is freedom. The problem is that the business itself becomes your prison, in some ways." — Karen AnsenGet in touch with Karen Ansen:Website: http://www.ignitehr.com.au/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ignitehrlawLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karenansen/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ignite_hr_/

John Steenhof, Principal Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Alliance, joined Jonathan for another conversation about the kinds of cases he works in the religious freedom/discrimination space. The conversation was scheduled prior to, but coinciding with, the the eruption of the Andrew Thorburn case—the CEO of the Essendon Football club forced to resign his position just 24 hours after being appointed because of his affiliation with a church. So while the pair do still discuss a number of recent freedom of religion/discrimination cases in Australia at the beginning of the conversation, they naturally end up focusing on the Thorburn episode and its implications for pluralism, religious freedom and the place of Christianity in contemporary Australian culture. The Political Animals is hosted by Dr Jonathan Cole, an academic, writer, speaker and translator specialising in political theology: the intersection of religion and politics. Jonathan was a senior terrorism analyst at Australian intelligence agency the Office of National Assessments where he worked on Islamist terrorism and the global jihadist movement. He is the author of The Reign of God: A Critical Engagement with Oliver O'Donovan's Theology of Political Authority and Christian Political Theology in an Age of Discontent: Mediating Scripture, Doctrine, and Political Reality.
