John Steenhof, Principal Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Alliance, joined Jonathan for another conversation about the kinds of cases he works in the religious freedom/discrimination space. The conversation was scheduled prior to, but coinciding with, the the eruption of the Andrew Thorburn case—the CEO of the Essendon Football club forced to resign his position just 24 hours after being appointed because of his affiliation with a church. The Political Animals is hosted by Dr Jonathan Cole, an academic, writer, speaker and translator specialising in political theology: the intersection of religion and politics. Jonathan was a senior terrorism analyst at Australian intelligence agency the Office of National Assessments where he worked on Islamist terrorism and the global jihadist movement. He is the author of The Reign of God: A Critical Engagement with Oliver O'Donovan's Theology of Political Authority and Christian Political Theology in an Age of Discontent: Mediating Scripture, Doctrine, and Political Reality. Let's talk about it! Welcome to our new podcast series where we have short conversations with our guests on the latest trending law topics here in Singapore and around the world. Is it time to do away with “Dear Sirs”? The Singapore legal industry has certainly seen more female practitioners today than before. We can do better by not addressing and grouping all female practitioners into a standardised template of “Dear Sirs”. Shouldn't this be the moment to act upon the principles of inclusivity and gender equality by addressing both male and female professionals respectfully? In this episode, we discuss the possibility of introducing a change like this to improve workplace inclusivity. Our special guest is Marianne Marchesi, Founder and Principal Lawyer of Legalite - a new kind of law firm that aims to simplify legal services. She was also awarded Sole Practitioner of the Year at the Lawyer's Weekly Australian Law Awards, and more recently, she won Partner of the Year (SME) in the 2019 Lawyer's Weekly Women in Law Awards. Specifically we cover why/how to: - experience is not the key to true confidence - face resistance as a young female in male dominated industry - shut down the worry about not being set up for success - you have to be selfish when taking risks - protect yourself against the big risk of things not working out - a mixed male & female networking group can be more powerful than a pure female one - starting her own practice was the best decision ever
Tara Vasdani, Principal Lawyer of Remote Law Canada, talks about some of the legal implications of hiring remote workers and digital nomads, as well as some of the things organizations and employees can do to protect themselves while working remotely.

Body Corporate debt recovery - Procedures, tips and steps to successful action An instructive look at debt recovery from the Body Corporate and lawyer’s perspective, and how to manage such processes with Daniel Wignall, Principal Lawyer at Macpherson Kelley Daniel discusses the difficulties and challenges in a Body Corporate recovering outstanding debts, amidst the Body Corporate’s obligation and limitation periods for such recoveries. Daniel provides recommendations on the committee action in initiating a ‘prescribed proceeding” for debt recovery, including the best practice in formulating the necessary committee approval (VOC). Daniel advocates for specific and detailed committee motions in approving debt recovery processes, stating: “I think it’s important to keep it specific because it all depends on the amount of the claim, and to keep lawyers in check and always reporting back to their clients. I think, if it gets to a point where it’s not commercial, committees need to understand that and need to be told that … so causing the lawyer to go back to the committee all the time on big decisions of cost is important, and therefore the VOC should be quite specific on what those instructions are.” Daniel delves into best practices and intricacies of the following: - The effect that the quantum of the debt has on the optimum method to pursue debt recovery; - The process of debt recovery explained; - Why lot owners do not pay levies and why it is imperative that a Body Corporate recover such debts; - The benefits of lawyers billing debt recovery actions on the basis of a scale of costs, particularly when arguing the “reasonableness” of recovering such incurred costs; - The importance of levies on how not paying levies impacts the Body Corporate; - The need for reasonableness of payment plans from lot owners; - Self-represented parties and the implications of dealing with such debtors; - Debt recovery enforcement options against individuals and corporate entities; - Financiers and debt recovery; - The importance of proper communication between the Body Corporate/Lawyer and the lot owner debtor; - The role of the Body Corporate Manager in debt recovery, associated due diligence action and best practices to be undertaken; - The conveyancer’s role in debt recovery; and - Future directions in Body Corporate debt recovery including cost implications in nuisance applications. Let’s be honest, TV and the movies have probably given the legal professions a pretty unfortunate reputation as the kind of people you’ll hopefully never have to deal with. On the one side they are perceived as fix it men, to be called upon to help you get out of trouble. On the other, a letter in the post from one of these guys could turn your whole life sour for weeks or even longer. Looming above either is the unknown subject of cost, the infamous time-charge in 6 minute increments, and the fear of a long and drawn out saga of that may never end and could ruin your business and even your life. Is any of this even true? Is any of it relevant to us? Does anyone even know what solicitors do all day? Why should we even care? In this interview with Michael Tucak, Principal Lawyer and Director of Creative Legal, you'll have the opportunity to learn which facets of the legal system are relevant to a typical freelance or small business practice. We'll get some basic definitions down and give you an easy to understand run down of how the law can protect you and your creative business, and the kinds of things you should be doing in order to make that happen. Surprisingly, none of it is nearly as scary as you think! Creative Legal are a progressive legal practice that specialise in representing and helping creative business owners, freelancers, musicians and startups get off to the right start by having the right documents and legal matters in order to prevent bad things happening later. I met Michael just before he was starting his 30 minute slots of free legal advice as part of his P.U.L.P (Pop-Up Legal Practice) initiative at Spacecubed.
