New Zealand music icon Suzanne Lynch joins Paula to talk about how trusting her gut – and knowing when to say yes or no – has shaped a career that took her from teenage stardom in The Chicks to touring the world with Cat Stevens. She reflects on childhood mischief, the magic of the sixties, and the work ethic that’s kept her grounded for six decades in music.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A true New Zealand music legend, Don McGlashan has written some of our most-loved tunes. From ‘Anchor Me' in his time with the Mutton Birds, through to his incredible work as a solo artist and his compositions for film and television. In 2023 McGlashan went on a very special tour around New Zealand, and off the back he's released his first solo live album – ‘Take It To The Bridge'. Although he's been part of the making of a dozen or more studio albums, McGlashan confessed to Jack Tame that he was never really interested in live albums. “It sort of surprised me, that in the middle of this tour,” “I suddenly felt this would be great, this is really special – I should be, we should be recording everything.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
One of the most significant country music figures to emerge from New Zealand, Tami Neilson continues to grow on the world stage. Later this year she'll be touring around the US with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, as well as a string of European dates – but unlike some other stars, she's not leaving New Zealand out. Neilson is returning to our stages this October for her ‘Neon Cowgirl' tour – performing five shows across the country. She'll be performing songs from her new album of the same name, which releases in July. Although it's common for artists to labour over their work, often taking years to complete and release albums, Neilson told Mike Hosking that comparatively, she works quite quickly. “From the time I'm kind of laying down the music to when it comes out, it's usually a year,” she said. “I usually write my albums and then track them within a week, so most of my albums are live off the floor.” The recordings listeners hear are full takes performed live by Neilson and her band, which she says adds a realness to the songs. “I think in this age of, you know, impending AI, the more we can lean into our humanity, you hope that comes through in the music and connects with other human hearts.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Strap yourself in for a wild ride- my most chaotic podcast EVER!Andrew Fagan is a kiwi musician. In the 1980's he was the singer of one of New Zealand's most popular bands called The Mockers. Chances are, if you know any of their songs it'll be Forever Tuesday Morning. But for a 12-year-old Dom Harvey. He knew every word of every song. Obsessed is a big word…but that was my relationship with this band called the Mockers. I was a psycho-fan…and I would be prepared fight anyone who dared to disagree they were the best band in the world. So, to sit down for a long conversation with one of my childhood heroes was something truly special. This is by far the most unique and bizarre podcast I've ever done- Andrew turned up with his own props including a flag, a stool, a bell, a water spray bottle, guitar and amp.We talk about his life in music, including those years in The Mockers- his recollections of the infamous 1984 Queen Street Riots and the deep impact of losing a bandmate to suicide. We also discuss in great length his love of solo voyages in the open ocean in small boats. Then we go deep with some musings on life, aging, mental health and future goals.Whether you're a long-time fan of The Mockers or new to wonderful world and mind of Andrew Fagan, this episode offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable New Zealander (who I am lucky to call a mate). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Lynfield-based Larry Killip describes himself as "possibly the most famous person that you have never heard of". With a musical career stretching back to the mid-60s, Killip's first band The Zarks was formed with a few high school buddies. Since then he's continued to write and perform in various iterations, but the work most people would be familiar with is the hundreds of jingles Killip has written - for everything from Columbine stockings to Skyline Gottages. He joins Colin Peacock to reflect on his unusual career, his work with indie pop darlings The Beths, and his ever-growing collection of vintage gear and ephemera.
