As COVID-19-related cancellations mounted in 2020, it was clear exhibitors wanted a place to show and cattlemen needed a place to sell. In the state of Oklahoma, breeders got busy working their connections, and soon Cattlemen's Congress was born. Now in its fourth year, the event featured record numbers and record-high sale averages this January. It has become a place of camaraderie, celebration, commerce and competition. This episode gathers three individuals who were there for the beginning and have been involved ever since, as they talk about its influence on the state and plans for the future. HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Mark McCully GUESTS: Mark Johnson, Tyler Norvell, Donnie Robertson Mark Johnson, along with his wife, Brenda, and two daughters, operates J&J Beef Genetics, LLC. Johnson grew up in Deerfield, Mo., and attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M junior college and later Oklahoma State University (OSU) before completing his doctorate at Kansas State University in 1992. Since then, Johnson has been a professor of animal and food sciences at OSU and has served as supervisor of the OSU Purebred Beef operation for 32 years. At OSU, Johnson has held the Totusek Endowed Chair, been recognized with awards for teaching and advising, conducted youth and beef cattle extension programming, and coached the livestock judging team. He's been very involved in the Oklahoma Angus Association, and in 2024 he and his wife were inducted into the OAA Hall of Fame. Tyler Norvell, president of the Oklahoma Youth Expo and board chairman for Cattlemen's Congress, has deep roots in Oklahoma agriculture. He grew up on his family's farm and ranch, judged livestock for OSU, and served as vice president of public policy at Oklahoma Farm Bureau. Since 2012, Tyler has worked for the Oklahoma Youth Expo, where he leads in strategy development and fundraising. In addition, he owns a lobbying firm. Donnie Robertson was born and raised in Lexington, Ky., and had experience at purebred Angus operations across the country before coming to Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla., 31 years ago. He's currently the vice president of marketing at Express Ranches, where he travels extensively and attends many purebred Angus sales. Angie is a die-heart sooner fan with two degrees from OU including a Doctorate of Law.She practiced for several years as in-house counsel for Oklahoma Farm Bureau then started her HR journey there in 2002 as VP of HR. HR has been the perfect fit for Angie’s passion for mentoring and strategic thinking.Along with HR, Angie is active in several non-profit organizations including serving on the boards for the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City and Guiding Right and volunteering whenever the opportunity arises.In 2000, she founded Diamond Daughters, LLC. An organization designed and focusing on mentoring young women. This group has seen nearly 300 girls pass through its doors with two currently serving on its Board with their doctorate degrees.In her spare time, Angie is rediscovering traveling to historical sites, spending time with her 18-month-old godson, and crafting.

BIOOn January 14, 2019, Blayne Arthur was sworn in by Governor Kevin Stitt as the Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture—the state’s first female to hold the position. She acts as Governor Stitt’s chief advisor on policy development and implementation related to agriculture, food and forestry, and holds the titles of Oklahoma Commissioner of Agriculture and the President of the Oklahoma State Board of Agriculture.Secretary Arthur grew up in Chickasha, Oklahoma, where her family raised horses, shorthorn cattle, wheat, alfalfa and soybeans. Upon graduating from Oklahoma State University in 2004, with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, Sec. Arthur took a role in small-business financing for Rural Enterprises, Inc. In 2009, the then-Secretary of Agriculture, Terry Peach hired her as the department’s social media coordinator. When Secretary Jim Reese was elected in 2011, he offered her the position as the Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture, where she stayed from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, she served as the Executive Director for the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation until her appointment by Governor Stitt.She is the 2016 Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Distinguished Service Award Recipient; remains active in Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Diamond Hats, American Quarter Horse Association, Oklahoma Beef Council, and Ponies of the Americas; and selected for multiple honors including Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program Class XV, a Journal Record 2011 Achievers Under 40 honoree, and the 2014 Oklahoma Agricultural Woman of the Year.Secretary Arthur married Jerrod Arthur in 2006 and they have two children, Kelton and Kennedy, who both enjoy showing cattle and horses. Steve Thompson of Oklahoma Farm Bureau Talks about the new fiscal year State of Oklahoma Budget and other policy issues worked on as the State Legislature effectively ended their legislative year by mid May. Thompson said numerous agricultural policy issues were discussed by lawmakers. Among the issues were food safety laws connected with farmers selling direct to consumers through farmer’s markets, changes in hemp regulations, and an updated definition of what constitutes meat.
