What if having more fun was the key to being a better founder?Seriously. Not just to feel good, but to actually unlock better decisions, more creativity, and a business that's built to last.In this episode, I sit down with Freddie, founder of POP and one of the most insightful coaches I know. We talk about something that doesn't get spoken about enough in founder circles: how to reconnect with yourself as you scale. Not in a fluffy way. But in a practical, energising, real kind of way.Together, we unpack:• The internal work that often gets left behind. • The difference between grinding through growth and actually enjoying the ride. • Why so many founders feel guilty for wanting things to be fun• Practical advise on how to make your scaling journey more enjoyableIf you're feeling stretched, stuck, or like you're starting to lose the spark you had at the beginning… give it a watch!About Freddie:Freddie has always been fascinated by what makes people tick. She started out in anthropology, then spent years headhunting top-tier venture investors, meeting 1000s of people across the tech ecosystem. That curiosity led her into coaching, where she's trained with some of the world's leading thinkers in psychology, philosophy, breathwork, and leadership development. Through her practice, POP, she now works with ambitious founders and investors—helping them scale their impact without losing themselves in the process. Her clients include 100+ VC-backed founders, from early-stage to unicorns, backed by funds like Sequoia, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, Atomico, and Northzone.More from James: Connect with James on LinkedIn or at peer-effect.com

Sebastian Gabor, MBA,  is a dynamic entrepreneur, educator, TED speaker, endurance athlete, and a firm believer in technology for the greater good. After completing business school at 21, he started a software development agency, ITGambit, that served industry giants such as Disney and Hasbro. Along the way, he lectured at Geneva Business School and co-founded Code4Romania, a non-profit organization creating technical solutions to social challenges that now unites 2700+ developers. Gabor's  journey took an unexpected turn when he delved into the world of veterinary medicine while working on a project for a pet vaccine manufacturer. Immersed in the busy routines of dozens of veterinary hospitals, he was astonished by the multitude of administrative tasks that plagued their workflows, diverting precious time away from what veterinary professionals cherish most – caring for their patients. This revelation, coupled with observations of pet parent challenges, sparked the idea of building a software product that would enhance the veterinary care process. Together with his partner Ruxandra Pui, he developed Digitail – an all-in-one operating system for animal hospitals designed to improve efficiencies and provide a modern experience to veterinary teams, clients, and their pets. Launched in 2018, Digitail now serves 1,000+ practices and 1 million pets worldwide. In 2023, Digitail closed an $11 million Series A funding round led by Atomico. Gabor's is an avid reader and a three-time Ironman finisher. He loves hiking and debating world problems with his friends.

Paul and I met back in 2017, shortly before I photo-bombed his stand at a fintech event in Dublin, and we've collaborated quite a bit since then. He and his business partner and life partner, Laura Smyth, from Top Tier Recruitment, were the original sponsors of MoneyNeverSleeps back in 2018. Since then, Paul Smyth has also launched the Possible Coaching business, which counts me as one of their proud customers. I was so happy with the outcome of Paul's coaching of me that I asked him to coach the founders that we bring through the Techstars Web3 accelerator. As one of the many hats he wears, Paul Smyth is a fantastic Coach-in-Residence for Techstars, helping startup founders find their way to positive outcomes. In this Money Talks segment, Paul Smyth and I kick things off with a look at the recent "State of European Tech 2023" report produced by Atomico, the on-traditional European Venture Capital firm. We then get into some of the key issues at play with the proposed Digital Euro and how Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) adoption may be impacted by the context of privacy in personal financial transactions. This leads us to a rundown on SocGen's new stablecoin listed on the Bitstamp exchange, and we finish with a big question on what matters more in startup success: great founders or great markets. Change is inevitable, argues Paddy, and it's a sink-or-swim situation. But the best leaders can rise above turbulent waters by demonstrating adaptability, foresight, and a deep understanding of their organization's goals. Paddy also talks through a strategic hiring process and shows how data-led insights and tactical planning can help manage stakeholder expectations. Finally, the conversation turns towards the future, as Chris and Paddy predict how AI could shape the talent space. Spoiler: its impact will be game-changing – but not in the way we might expect.
