About The Guest(s): Lori Miranda is an advocate for inclusive education and the Director of Pre-K Exceptional Student Education (ESE) in Palm Beach County, Florida. She has been instrumental in implementing inclusive practices for young children with disabilities in the county's school district, Head Start programs, and community centers.Summary: Lori Miranda discusses the importance of inclusive placements for students with disabilities in Palm Beach County. She explains that the traditional model of removing students from their natural environments and sending them to separate special education programs was disruptive and limited their opportunities for socialization and learning. To address this issue, Palm Beach County implemented a collaborative approach, partnering with community centers and Head Start programs to provide inclusive education for young learners with disabilities.Miranda highlights the challenges they faced in implementing this model, including concerns about behavior management, funding, and teacher buy-in. However, through extensive training, relationship-building, and a commitment to putting children and families first, they were able to overcome these barriers and create a successful inclusive program. She also discusses the positive impact of inclusive placements on students' transitions to kindergarten. By providing support and services in their natural environments, students are better prepared for the general education setting and have a higher likelihood of continuing in inclusive classrooms.Transcript: https://otter.ai/u/2jWLSDDkk-cKV2lPhwr9WbfF1qQKey Takeaways:Inclusive placements allow students with disabilities to remain in their natural environments and receive support and services in community centers and Head Start programs.Building relationships and trust with community partners and teachers is crucial for the success of inclusive programs.Palm Beach County's inclusive model has resulted in 100% of students transitioning to general education kindergarten.Resources: Partners in Education Video (Palm Beach County School District): https://youtu.be/VEpX6EqCV50Palm Beach County School District: https://www.palmbeachschools.org/domain/456MCIE:Website: https://www.mcie.org/Email List: https://bit.ly/MCIE-Email-ListFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThinkInclusive/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/think_inclusive/Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/think_inclusiveYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ThinkinclusiveUsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/inclusive-education/ Support Think Inclusive by becoming a patron! Today, I'm going to open up the curtain once again on my own entrepreneurial journey and share my recent Key Note Address! Well, with that key note, I was walking the walk that I talked about in the last episode--that when people see you, STEP UP. So, I'll let you be the judge on how I did! You'll hear me trying to tackle two intentions with this key note address: 1) getting young entrepreneurs jazzed about the journey and the experiece of building your own business by sharing my own journey, and 2) giving a quick course on launching a podcast. And, I'm sharing this also so that you can imagine all the potential impact that my doing this particular presentation in front of that audience of small business owners had for MY business. And, THAT's why I'm such a proponent of getting out there. Listen in, and let's do this...! Schools will be back and mostly open for in-person learning in a few weeks. As students return, challenges around safety and emergencies still exist. So, how can schools be prepared?Offering his expert perspective, Frank Kitzerow, Retired Chief of Police and District Security for Palm Beach County School District, spoke with School Safety Today host Shelby Skrhak. Kitzerow had a 40-year career in law enforcement.“In looking at the safety aspect, there are lots of questions. One thing I learned was to pay attention to the community, because schools are a microcosm of that,” Kitzerow said. While leading the Palm Beach County School District, Kitzerow established a school safety ecosystem. “It's about staying left of the X, with X being a catastrophic event. It's a focus on prevention, intervention and diversion to stop a potential attack.”The planning part of school safety is essential, according to Kitzerow. “You want to have a robust toolbox to respond quickly if that day occurs. A plan for this involves communication, unified command and technology.”Developing a response plan requires lots of stakeholders. It's parents, students, teachers, administrators, law enforcement, fire and rescue, and more. Kitzerow established such a program involving all these parties focusing on effective communication, situational awareness, and technology tools.“One of the heaviest lifts in communication is reunification, matching students to family, which is often a lot of people, and there's no room for error. Emergency management platforms support this,” Kitzerow noted.Such technology can also play a role in communicating with teachers during an incident.Kitzerow also urged districts to practice the plans, not just create them. “Make sure everyone is well-versed. What you invest on the front end, you'll take on the back end.”

Dustin' off the Degree - Indulgences NEWS Catholic school puts counselor on leave over same-sex marriage http://bit.ly/an264-counselor Shelly Fitzgerald married her then partner of 18 years in 2014 and has worked as a counselor for Roncalli High School in Indianapolis for 15 years. Someone learned of her marriage, got a copy of the marriage license, a public record, and sent it to the school administrators who ran it up the chain of command and she's been placed on administrative leave pending her resignation or the end of her contract since she refused the option of dissolving the marriage. At issue here are the following facts: Roncalli High School is a Catholic school. The school receives vouchers, in other words it's publicly funded. Indiana's religious freedom law was amended to not allow discrimination. 'In God We Trust' now must be displayed in all Florida schools, school buildings http://bit.ly/an264-motto Just like we talked about two weeks ago for Kentucky, Florida is also requiring that all schools display “In God We Trust” in a conspicuous place. St. Lucie Public Schools gave all schools a poster to put in their front offices. Palm Beach County School District emailed principles two signs and asked them to print and post one. Okeechobee County schools were each given a state seal, which includes the required text and have been directed to put it “in a prominent spot on each campus”. Interestingly displaying the Florida state flag would also comply. MRFF files complaint against US Air Force General http://bit.ly/264-mrff The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has sent Secretary of Defense, US Air Force Leadership, and the command at Edwards Air Force Base a 22 page letter detailing the issues they have found with Brig Gen E. John Teichert after receiving 41 complaints and conducting an investigation of the ministry he runs. Of concern is his evangelical dominionist agenda that he pushes in a way that is allegedly unbecoming an officer and creates serious establishment clause issues and the way that he treats atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Hindus, and Mormons under his command, which is illegal discrimination. Saudi Arabia Orders 16,000 Students to Leave Canada Amid Escalating Clash http://bit.ly/an264-saudi1 http://bit.ly/an264-saudi2 On August 5 the Government of Canada called for the release of blogger Raif Badawi and his sister Samar, via tweet, for obvious human rights concerns. In response the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia declared the Canadian Ambassador persona non grata, recalled their own ambassador to Canada, orders all 16,000 Saudi students in Canada to find new countries to study in, canceled all flights between Saudi Arabia and Canada, and suspended investment activity in Canada. They are still selling oil to Canada. Saudi Arabia crucified man in Mecca while calling out Canada human rights http://bit.ly/an264-saudi3 Saudi Arabia has also been going on the offense against Canada's horrific human rights record, especially with their treatment of women. On their official Twitter account they retweeted a picture someone made of an airliner about to fly into the CN Tower. But their strongest show of moral superiority yet, they crucified a man in Mecca. Normally crucifixion is reserved for only the most heinous of crimes, homosexuality and attending government protests, but in this man's case he was merely guilty of murder, theft, and attempted rape. Denmark imposes first veil ban fine on woman http://bit.ly/an264-denmark Danish police were called to a shopping mall over a fight between two women. One of the women was wearing a veil, the other was not and the former's veil fell off during the fight. The police fined both women for public disorder and also fined the one woman for wearing a face veil in public. The fine was for 1000 kroner, or about $155.
