We review the new Audi RS6 Avant Performance, G99 BMW M5 Touring, Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance and Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. One looks spectacular, one has the most impressive suspension of all time, and one is unbuyable. === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === Welcome to the performance wagon episode! We've got Jason's blue E30 325i Touring in the garage as we discuss a pair of long-roof autobahn bruisers: the G99 BMW M5 Touring and C8 Audi RS6 Avant Performance. With the cancellation of Porsche's Panamera Sport Turismo, we turn to Porsche's top-spec suppository in its stead: the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. And, similarly, with the E63 wagon gone, we'll review the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance to tide us over until the new E53 wagon arrives. Starting with the brand new BMW M5 Touring: a letdown as serious as its curb weight. A twin-turbo hot-vee V-8 alongside some EV juice dolls out 717 hp, but long before you're able to stretch its legs the suspension will have you nauseous. It heaves and lunges over road imperfections, and the rear-wheel steering makes it feel like you're perpetually entering the D dimension. Even with new, chunky-sidewalled Pirelli P Zero R tires, the ride is harsh, and the suspension is blatantly unfinished. Do a hard launch and prepare for simultaneous – and yet somehow also out-of-phase – wheelspin and violent pogoing. Things aren't much better styling-wise – the front-end treatment is positively hideous, and there's comparatively little backseat and cargo room next to the Audi. Overall, a huge let down, and a far cry from the delightful G80 M3 (buck teeth aside). Sadly, it will be a long, long while before we can import the G80 M3 Touring. However, it's worth noting that early M products have had teething issues before (including the beloved E90 M3). Jason suggests waiting for the arrival of the Competition Pack, but you'll still be stuck with a gaudy interior and byzantine infotainment system. The Audi RS6 Performance on the other hand is an absolute delight and unexpectedly fabulous. Without the bulk of hybrid batteries, the Audi weighs in at 400 lbs lighter than the Bimmer. It's all-around gorgeous – inside and out – and has loads of room for both passengers and cargo. Its steering is genuinely superior to the BMW's and Jason dubs it the “best wagon in the world.” As for the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid – it's Bose's 1990s dream realized. Jason heralds it as the most impressive suspension he's ever felt – ever. Like if a Rolls-Royce could turn. It comes equipped with the same potent powertrain found in the Bentley Continental GT Speed and Flying Spur, which is so powerful it earned the Porsche the label of quickest 4-door ICE car ever (the 4-door electric monsters still have it beat – the Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid both run in the 9s). And lastly, we have Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance – a charmer. The interior is slightly gaudy but otherwise splendid. Our particular car's cabin was a huge improvement over the Macanese bordellos of previous W223s and W222s. The convoluted and clunky drivetrain was an occasional annoyance (and has origins as far back as the first C43 and E63 wagon), but the Benz was mostly a delight to operate despite weighing more than a fully laden minivan – and 3000 lbs more than Jason's E30. The boys wonder why Mercedes has refused to implement the types of suspensions Porsche and Ferrari figured out for their sports cars years ago that allow for ultra-smooth cruising without sacrificing handling. In any case, the S63's ¼-mile time leaves Derek's jaw on the floor. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

¡Adoro los coches familiares! Son coches inteligentes: tan prácticos y capaces como los SUV, pero más ligeros, estables y económicos. Para mí las carrocerías más bonitas son los coupés y los familiares… ¿Soy un friki? He elegido 10 opciones interesantes. 1. Alfa Romeo 159 1.0 JTD 16v (2007). 3.000 euros. 2. Audi A4 TDI Quattro Avant 180 CV (2003). 3.000 euros. 3. BMW Serie 3 330D Touring (2002). 4.000 euros. 4. Citroën C5 2.0 HDi Break (2006). 3.500 euros. 5. Lexus IS200 2.0 SportCross (2003). 3.500 euros. 6. Mercedes Benz Clase E 320 CDI Avantgarde (2001). 3.500 euros. 7. Saab 95 SW 2.2 TiD Vector (2005). 3.000 euros 8. Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D SOL (2005). 3.500 euros. 9. Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0 TDi Trendline (2007). 3.000 euros. 10. Volvo V40 1.8 Gasolina (2004). 3.000 euros.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MADE IN CHINA MODEL 3'S LEAVE FOR EUROPE NEXT TUESDAY "The first batch of Gigafactory Shanghai’s China-made Model 3 is about to begin their journey to Europe. The vehicles are reportedly en route to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, where they will be distributed to countries such as Germany and France." says Teslarati: "Recent reports from Chinese media have announced the shipment of thousands of Made-in-China Standard Range Plus Model 3s from Gigafactory Shanghai. As noted by Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla, the shipments will start next week on Tuesday, October 27. Tesla owner-enthusiast Armand Vervaeck suggested that the China-made Model 3s could be shipped by train to Europe due to the vehicles being fitted with protective wraps. Based on comments under Teslarati’s previous article, it seems that shipments by train would have an estimated arrival time of two weeks."   This does point to towards Model Y coming to Europe, if demand in China allows. And Model 3 from Fremont no longer has to do the 20 day journey down the West Coast, Mexico etc, through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic. Plus the margin on those MIC cars is much better.   As a commenter notes: "Tesla can charge more for an SR+ in Europe vs China, LFP Version provides better margin compared to the US Model 3 might be battery cell constraint along with the model Y ramp. So to supply Europe, they can further diversify their cells. So I believe they bypass Chinese demand in favor of supplying Europe. Can't wait to see first European YouTube reviews about the MIC M3 build quality etc."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-china-export-europe-start-date/   TESLA RESEARCHERS PRESENT BATTERY WITH 2 MILLION MILE LIFECYCLE "Tesla battery researchers around Jeff Dahn have presented updated test results for their battery cells. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers." says electrive: "With “special additives”, the batteries should be able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Assuming a relatively conservative 350 kilometer range per cycle (i.e., a full charge from 0 to 100 percent), this would be 3.5 million kilometers. Whether 3.2 or 3.5 million kilometers: the one million miles or 1.6 million kilometers announced in September 2019 seem to be clearly surpassed. If the batteries were only discharged by 25 to 50 per cent of their capacity, they would show almost no degradation. This is a charge level range that many electric car drivers use in practice – the battery is rarely discharged to less than 20 per cent, on the other hand, it is rarely charged over 80 per cent."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/   TESLA HAS OVER 120 OPERATIONAL MICROGRIDS "Tesla has over 120 operational microgrids around the world using its batteries and renewable energy, according to a new comment from an executive. Ever since the launch of Tesla Energy and its stationary energy storage products, Tesla started working on microgrid projects" says electrek: "Michael Snyder, director of engineering and construction, energy projects at Tesla, released the information in a Linkedin post about a new position on the microgrid team: If you like solving problems at the nexus of power systems interactions, protection coordination, system and product level controls, and DERs (Powerpacks, Megapacks, solar, and generators), check out the link below for a microgrid-focused product engineer. We have 120+ operational microgrids around the world with high impact to a variety of communities/customers. This is a unique and rewarding role."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/19/tesla-120-operational-microgrids-world/   TESLA EXPANDS CHARGING IN EUROPE Tesla’s Supercharger network has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the quarter with over 250 new Supercharging stalls located all over Europe, with around 240 of these being V3 Superchargers. All our chargers are placed on well-travelled routes which allow you to explore every corner of Europe. The following Tesla Supercharging sites have been opened since July 1st 2020: Denmark: Ikast – 12 stalls Finland: Huittinen – 6 stalls (2 V2) France: Angoulême, Sisteron, Les Herbiers - 28 stalls (4 V2) Germany: Berlin EUREF Campus, Braak, Eschborn, Herzsprung, Wismar, Hilden – 72 stalls (4 V2) Iceland: Fossvogur – 4 stalls (V2) Italy: Forli – 4 stalls Netherlands: Akersloot, Apeldoorn Oost, Middelburg, Rijswijk – 40 stalls Norway: Aksdal South, Bamble – 36 stalls Portugal: Loule – 8 stalls Spain: Aranda de Duero – 4 stalls Switzerland: Bulle, Martigny – 16 stalls UK: Fort William, Hilton Park Southbound, Leeds-Whitehouse, Lifton, Manchester South, Wyboston – 42 stalls (14 V2) Across Europe there are over 5300 Supercharger stalls spread across nearly 530 locations and 29 countries in Europe. The Tesla Supercharger Network will continue to expand around the globe to enable all-electric journeys to be effortless.   PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID "Porsche has announced two new hybrid powertrains for its Panamera hatchback and Panamera Sport Turismo estate, bringing back the 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models to the range. These join the 4S E-Hybrid that was launched when the Panamera was facelifted a few months back" writes evo.co.uk: "The Turbo S E-Hybrid reclaims its position as the most powerful Panamera derivative, now peaking at 690bhp, 9bhp more than before. The extra power is derived from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at the core of the powertrain, which on its own produces 563bhp. Despite its near 2500kg kerb weight, the Turbo S E-Hybrid will reach 62mph in 3.2sec (0.2sec quicker than the previous model) and go on to 196mph, while also being able to cruise for up to 31 miles on the electric motors alone. "The German plugin vehicle market had another record month in September, with a little over 41,000 registrations. Plugin hybrid (PHEV) registrations continued going through the roof, up 463% to 20,127 units" reports Clean Technica: "The plugin vehicle share reached a record 16% (8% fully electric vehicles/BEV), pulling the yearly tally to 10% (4.8% BEV), so this market has officially reached double digits, also known as … The Disruption Zone."   Zoe, Model 3, ID.3, Mercedes GLC300e and Kona EV   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/10/19/16-plugin-vehicle-market-share-in-germany/   LG CHEM PLANS TO BUILD A NEW FACTORY IN EUROPE Reuters says: "LG Chem is looking for a site to build a new factory in Europe, as it plans to more than double its global car battery capacity to 260 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2023, from 120 GWh this year."   "LG Chem already has two battery cell plants in Europe and both are in Poland where most of LG Chem’s global battery cell production is located. If production capacity is expanded at its already operating plants, LG Chem can produce 120 GWh annually and this would be enough to assemble more than 2 million (2.400.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." according to PushEVs: "With a third battery cell plant in Europe LG Chem expects to reach a global annual production capacity of 260 GWh by 2023. This would be enough to produce more than 5 million (5.200.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each."   https://pushevs.com/2020/10/19/lg-chem-plans-to-build-a-new-factory-in-europe/   BMW PRODUCED ITS 200,000TH I3 MODEL "The 200 000th BMW i3 model rolled off the production line yesterday – almost silently as always. The BMW i3s with Fluid Black metallic paint finish and accents in BMW i Blue was produced for a customer from Saxony and will be delivered by the BMW branch in Leipzig." "With the start of production in 2013, the plant in Saxony became a pioneer and centre of excellence for sustainable mobility. The BMW i3 was the BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered large-scale serial model and also the company’s first vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic"   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/10/bmw-produced-its-200000th-i3-model/   FOUR CAR CHARGING NETWORKS JOIN OCTOPUS ENERGY NETWORK Octopus Energy announces that four electric vehicle (EV) charging firms have joined its Electric Juice Network in a bid to simplify on-street charging. Show #679   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 27th January 2020. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PATREON SUPPORTER JOHN   JAGUAR LAND ROVER CUTS 500 JOBS: IS FOCUS NOW ON ELECTRIFICATION? "Jaguar Land Rover is going to cut some 500 jobs (about 10%) at its Halewood plant near Liverpool in the UK, as the facility will now work on two shifts (instead of three shifts) with an option for an extension of some workdays if demand is high." reports InsideEVs: "According to Bloomberg, the reason for that is a necessity to "to cut costs amid mounting spending on electric cars". On the other hand, Tata Motors (JLR parent company) explains that “This is about efficiency, not loss of volume." Thanks to the partnership with BMW, the new models might be equipped with BMW's drive units to limit development costs."   https://insideevs.com/news/394431/jaguar-land-rover-cuts-500-jobs/   NISSAN E-NV200 CONVERSION "‘Final mile’ delivery specialists in the UK, together with tradesmen and other operators working in urban areas, can now choose a competitively priced, fully electric van which offers up to twice the cargo volume of similarly sized competitors" according to MHW Magazine: "West Midlands-based Bevan Group has announced the signing of a landmark partnership agreement with conversion specialist Voltia, under which it has been awarded a licence to assemble and market the zero-emission Nissan-based vehicle in Great Britain and Ireland. The 2.2-tonne Nissan e-NV200 is ideally suited to ‘last mile’ delivery work in towns and cities. Voltia’s conversion features walk-in rear doors and offers a load volume of up to 8m3, which is virtually twice that of the standard e-NV200 – a variant with 6m3 cargo area is also available. It has a 580 kg payload capacity."   https://mhwmagazine.co.uk/bevan-group-enters-the-electric-vehicle-arena-with-high-volume-nissan-e-nv200-conversion.html   ELECTRIC SCOOTERS ARE A STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING ROAD LEGAL IN THE UK "Electric scooters could soon be road-legal in the UK, as the government prepares to open a consultation, followed by trials in several cities. E-scooter trials have already taken place in London's Olympic Park, but this will be the first time you can take an electric scooter out on public streets." writes TechRadar: "Despite the number of people already using them for daily commutes, it's currently illegal to ride electric scooters on either roads or pavements in the UK. The UK seems likely to follow the example of Paris, where parking dockless e-scooters on pavements was made illegal, speeds were capped, and a strict age limit was enforced last year following hundreds of accidents and several deaths caused by careless riding."   https://www.techradar.com/news/i-took-an-electric-scooter-to-work-for-a-week-and-now-im-done-with-walking   TESLA COULD FOCUS MODEL Y DELIVERIES IN CANADA "Tesla is about to start Model Y deliveries, and the automaker might want to focus early deliveries in Canada, especially in Quebec, where the generous EV incentives are going to change and affect Tesla buyers." says electrrek:" For Model 3, Tesla had to adapt its pricing structure in order to give its buyers access to the federal government $5,000 rebate at the purchase due to a limit on the price (MSRP). Since the Model Y is more expensive than the Model 3, buyers of the new electric SUV won’t have access to it. In Quebec, EV buyers have access to an even more generous $8,000 EV incentive, and the rule regarding the price of the vehicles is more forgiving than with the federal incentives. It results in most Model 3 and Model Y variants being eligible. However, the program is changing starting April 1 where the MSRP limit for the full $8,000 credit drops to $60,000:"   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/27/tesla-model-y-deliveries-canada-advantage-incentives/   VOLKSWAGEN GROUP SOLD MORE THAN 140,000 PLUG-IN CARS IN 2019 Volkswagen Group significantly expanded its plug-in electric car sales in 2019, exceeding the level of 140,000 vehicles. That's an 80% improvement compared to 2018" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "For comparison, Volkswagen brand noted over 80,000 sales (up 60%) and most of those were all-electric cars. The remaining 60,000 must be Audi and Porsche, as the other brands are just starting electrification projects. In 2020, Volkswagen Group should exceed 200,000 as besides the Volkswagen ID.3, there will be more Audi plugs-in, the Porsche Taycan, as well as support from SEAT and Škoda."   Whereas the prediction from VW themselves is highter, from CleanTechnica: "Volkswagen Group expects ~4% of its sales to be electric in 2020, and then expects the figure to climb up each year to more than 20% in 2025. That’s about 450,000 sales in 2020 across 16 or so models. It’s unclear how the model breakdown is expected to go in terms of sales volume, though. Given the brand, price, and marketing focus, I presume the ID.3 and ID.Crozz will carry a large portion of the sales on their shoulders"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/12/30/volkswagen-group-aiming-to-produce-3-million-electric-vehicles-in-2025-how-might-it-get-there/   https://insideevs.com/news/394886/volkswagen-group-sold-140000-plugin-cars-2019/   PORSCHE TAYCAN SPORT TURISMO SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW "Porsche is moving on plan with the development of the Taycan Sport Turismo as these new spy photos confirm. If you are unfamiliar with that moniker, it’s the stylish wagon-ish version of the Taycan electric vehicle, which is expected to debut in its final production form later this year." says Motor1.com: "Our spies tell us it’s been a fun day for Porsche’s test drivers as extensive drift maneuvers in the snow put a natural disguise on the vehicle’s rear end not letting us take a closer look at the details. Or, simply put, the engineers got some help from mother nature. The Panamera Sport Turismo’s zero-emission brother should debut before the year’s end together with the Taycan Cross Turismo version, which will feature a similar body shape but combined with rugged exterior design cues and a higher suspension. Both should go on sale as 2021 models early next year at the latest."   BMW 530E INDUCTIVE CHARGING PILOT PROGRAM The BMW 530e inductive charging pilot program received the Green Car Journal’s Green Car Technology of the Year award. The Pilot Program allows participating BMW customers to test and provide valuable feedback on using wireless inductive technology to charge their BMW 530e plug-in-hybrid sedans, instead of having to plug the vehicle in using a wall-mounted charging box. BMW is the first automotive manufacturer to make this technology available to customers in the marketplace. The pilot program began in Germany in 2018, and expanded to the U.S. in mid-2019. Available in the state of California for a small group of qualifying residential home customers, the program included a 36-month lease of a specially equipped 530e sedan and home installation of the inductive charging equipment. BMW Wireless Charging consists of an Inductive Charging Station (GroundPad) and a secondary vehicle component (CarPad) fixed to the underside of the vehicle. The contactless transfer of energy between the GroundPad and CarPad is completed over a distance of around three inches. The inductive charging components generate a magnetic field, which allows for the safe transfer of energy with an efficiency rate of around 85%. The system has a charging power of 3.2 kW, enabling the high-voltage batteries on board the BMW 530e to be fully charged in around three and a half hours.   https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/usa/article/detail/T0304927EN_US/bmw-530e-inductive-charging-pilot-program-named-green-car-journal%E2%80%99s-2020-green-car-technology-of-the-year?language=en_US     GENESIS SET TO ENTER LUXURY EV MARKET "Genesis, the fledgling Korean luxury brand, expects to bring its first all-electric model to market a bit more than two years from now, several company sources confirmed during the debut of the automaker’s first SUV, the GV80, in Miami Beach on Tuesday night." reports The Detroit Bureau: "There are several reason why, starting with the solid performance electric motors can deliver. Meanwhile, luxury buyers are expected to be less sensitive to the price premium for battery vehicles – though costs are expected to come down to the point where BEVs could reach parity with gas-powered vehicles by around 2023, according to a new study by the Boston Consulting Group."   https://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2020/01/genesis-set-to-enter-luxury-ev-market/   From CNN: “Today, Genesis sales are miniscule compared to these established luxury brands. Last year, it sold 21,000 cars in the United States. BMW sold more than twice as many of its 3-series sedan alone.  Genesis cars are not exactly cheap, but they tend to cost considerably less than directly competitive German luxury models. (Genesis said the price of the GV80 will be revealed closer to when it goes on sale in the US this summer.) The interior, though, looks like the cabin of something far more expensive. It has clean lines, quilted leather and lots of shiny metal surfaces and wood trim. Genesis plans to soon add at least one more SUV to its lineup and an electric vehicle.”   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be? Show #407.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 6th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CONGRATULATIONS NISSAN The Nissan LEAF today became the first electric car in history to surpass 400,000 sales, solidifying the model’s leading role in the global shift toward more sustainable mobility. Introduced in 2010 as the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF has led the way in making the excitement and convenience of electric driving accessible to non-luxury buyers. Less than a decade ago, electric cars were seen as a niche product, and LEAF customers were mostly “early adopters.”   “AN ELECTRIC PORSCHE DRIVES JUST AS SPORTY AS ANY OTHER PORSCHE” Electromobility is the dominant theme of the Geneva Motor Show. At the Volkswagen Group Night, Porsche presented the Panamera Sport Turismo with hybrid drive and charging station for example.  Simon Vogt (E-Services - Sales & Operations) said: “Anyone who buys an electric or hybrid model from Porsche is offered a seamless and reliable charging experience and does not have to worry about charging. Everything is prepared. As soon as the customer wants it, the navigation system reliably guides them to a suitable charging station. There he simply inserts the plug and charges the desired range. Thanks to Plug and Charge, tiresome authentication processes are a thing of the past. Payment is also made automatically via the Porsche Charging Service. Put simply: car and charging station recognize each other as soon as the charging plug is inserted. The electricity price is also fixed, so that the amount due is simply debited from the customer's personal account. In principle, all drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles can charge via the Porsche Charging Service." And on the subject of performance he says: "With optimum drive technology and the right vehicle concept, the Porsche characteristics can be exploited even further through its electric models. For example, the center of gravity of the Taycan is lower than that of the 911, thanks to the underbody battery. Therefore, an electric Porsche is at least as sporty as a combustion engine."   $35,000 TESLA MODEL 3 LEADING TO PRICE CUTS ON CHEVY BOLT "Regardless of our previous reports that high demand is pushing up the price of the Hyundai Kona Electric at some dealerships, it appears Chevrolet dealers are taking the $35,000 Tesla Model 3 seriously and adjusting prices according."writes Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The Chevrolet Bolt is seeing discounts as high as $7,000. One of our avid readers from the state of Oregon has been tracking 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV pricing at local dealerships." The headline price is $37,000 and of course there are federal and state level incentives too.   https://insideevs.com/35000-tesla-model-3-leading-price-cuts-chevy-bolt/   TESLA MODEL S CALLED AMERICA’S “GREATEST MUSCLE CAR” "Former Top Gear host and current The Grand Tour presenter James May recently experienced the joys and exhilaration of Ludicrous Mode, courtesy of the Tesla Model S P100D." Reports Simon for Teslarati: " May mentioned several of the vehicle’s merits in his review, such as its power, technology, and its quiet, comfortable ride. The former Top Gear host even acknowledged the vehicle as America’s next-generation muscle car. “The Tesla Model S P100D is the greatest muscle car America has ever produced — which means, it’s the greatest muscle car the world has ever produced,” May commented. May did mention that the vehicle is unique in the way that Tesla is unique, even if some of the cars’ basic characteristics such as its panels have not reached the level of refinement as entries from veteran automakers. Pointing out some of the P100D’s quirky features that are based on Elon Musk’s sense of humor such as Fart Mode, May notes that there is simply no other car like the Model S on the road today, and from an automaker that is unlike anyone else in the industry."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-p100d-james-may-review/   BOB LUTZ SAYS TESLA SHOULD AND SHOULDN'T HAVE RETAILS STORES Mark Kane at InsideEVs reports: “Bob Lutz, former GM Chairman, was interviewed a few days ago by CNBC about Tesla and he doesn’t believe that Tesla will be able to shift sales entirely online, by the way of the introduction of $35,000 Model 3 Standard battery option.” Bob Lutz said: “I always said it was totally ridiculous to own your own dealership, you own the real estate, you own the people, you own the new car inventory, you own the used car inventory – a massive misallocation of company capital. So now they’re getting out of that, they’re gonna close stores, they’re going to try to do all the sales online. I don’t see how that’s gonna work. Who’s gonna take the trade-in, who’s gonna take the used cars, who’s gonna provide service with no stores there.”   https://insideevs.com/bob-lutz-skeptical-tesla-online-sales-video/   MITSUBISHI ENGELBERG TOURER MAKES GLOBAL PREMIERE AT 2019 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Named after the famous ski resort in central region of Switzerland, best known for its panoramic views, well-groomed runs and challenging off-piste skiing and snowboarding, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is a Twin Motor, 4WD, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which delivers high levels of performance in the most challenging weather conditions and on all road surfaces. It combines this with the long cruising range inherent to the PHEV, allowing journeys out of town and to places with no charging infrastructure.  The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer has an EV cruising range of over 43 miles/70 km (WLTP cycle) and with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank it has a total cruising range of over 434 miles/700 km (WLTP).   NIO SCRAPS FACTORY PLANS, ANNOUNCES $1.4 BILLION NET LOSS, STOCK FALLS "Chinese EV startup Nio has announced that it won’t be building its own manufacturing plant in Shanghai after all." Reports Phil at Electrek: "Nio released its Q4 and full 2018 financial results on Tuesday, and the company said the agreements it reached in 2017 to build its own manufacturing plant in Jia Ding, Shanghai have been terminated. Nio will continue to use its existing plant with state-owned JAC Motors to build its cars. The company says the agreement will “give it capacity and flexibility to support its market penetration and growth plans for the next two to three years.” The company reported $720 million in revenue for 2018, but it also posted a $1.4 billion net loss, nearly doubling its losses from the previous year."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/06/nio-scraps-factory-plans-announces-1-4-billion-net-loss-stock-falls/   BMW X3 XDRIVE30E HEADLINES A NEW AND OVERHAULED PHEV RANGE BMW is touting its new and improved range of plug-in hybrids at the Geneva Motor Show. At the volume end, the BMW X3 xDrive30e goes into production in December this year and puts a plug-in port on BMW's most popular crossover. It pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gas engine with an electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Combined output comes to 252 horsepower, which can be temporarily upped to 293 hp with a press of the XtraBoost button.” reports Autoblog: “The lithium-ion battery under the rear seat maintains the luggage volume of the conventional X3. The 6.5-second dash to 62 miles and hour puts it about 0.4 seconds behind the regular, 248-hp four-pot X3.” Reports Autoblog: “Next come upgraded, second-gen versions of the electrified 2, 3, 5, X5, and 7 Series ranges. The 330e runs up to 37 miles on electric power, a 50 percent improvement over the first-gen — but BMW didn't clarify how the 3 Series gained the extra range. As with the X3 PHEV, the 330e harnesses a combined system output of 252 hp and a temporary 41-hp squirt using XtraBoost. The batteries in the 225xe Active Tourer and 530e sedan grow in capacity without growing in size. The 225xe cell is now 9.7 kWh instead of 7.7, extending all-electric range to 29 miles. The 530e battery is rated at 12 kWh, while only taking up the same space as the previous 9-kWh battery. That improves electric range to up to 35 miles. The 530e will also be available with xDrive later this year.   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/bmw-x3-xdrive30e-phev-geneva-vv833kz9/   MERCEDES EQV ELECTRIC VAN CONCEPT DEBUTS, WILL SPAWN PRODUCTION VERSION "Fully electric vans aren't all the rage yet, but Mercedes is trying to change that with its EQV Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes promises this concept is going to spawn an extremely similar production vehicle. The specs on the concept are promising, too." Reports Autoblog: "The EQV Concept will travel 249 miles on a full charge from its 100 kWh battery pack. It's capable of charging up to 25 percent in just 15 minutes, providing 62 miles of driving. This van won't be a speed demon by any measure, as the single electric motor pushes a modest 201 horsepower to the front wheels. Top speed for the big van is 99 mph."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/mercedes-eqv-electric-van-concept-geneva-k43j5ss9/   HONDA TO FULLY ELECTRIFY Honda took to the stage at Geneva Motor Show to announce the further acceleration of its electrification ambitions. The company announced its intention to move 100 per cent of its European sales to electrified powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision.         COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   How do you feel about Tesla’s move to online-only sales? Do you want to test drive a car first?
