Being a caregiver can be tough and sometimes lonely. For caregiving moms, having a sense of community and connection is essential. Whether it's sharing tips on managing hectic schedules or simply lending an empathetic ear, having a supportive network of fellow moms can make all the difference in navigating the challenges of motherhood. In this episode of Parenting Impossible, Annette Hines sits down with Jessica Patay, founder of We Are Brave Together. Inspired by her journey as a special needs mom, Jessica established the nonprofit in 2017 to create a safe, judgment-free space where caregiving moms can connect and support one another, addressing the exhaustion and isolation they often face. In this conversation, Jessica discusses the power of building supportive communities for those navigating the unique challenges of raising children with special needs, as explored in her anthology, Becoming Brave Together. Jessica reminds us that no mother should face their caregiving journey alone. In this episode, you will hear: How caregivers can prioritize their mental health effectively. Why community is essential for supporting caregiving moms. What makes building connections so vital in the world of caregiving. How advocacy for caregivers and raising awareness about their struggles help combat stigma. Are you ready to uncover the power of shared courage? Listen in as my guest, Jessica Patay shares her inspiring story. Click here for the show notes and extra resources. Parenting is already a journey with many ups and downs add to it a child with special needs, then the community becomes your lifeline. Jessica created an amazing international community so we can all be brave together and we thank her for it. What We Talked About: The Mission of 'We Are Brave Together' The importance of finding a support network for parents caring for children with special needs. The daily struggles and unique challenges faced by caregivers, especially those caring for children with disabilities. Understanding Prader-Willi Syndrome The difference between self-comfort and true self-care Things to Remember “What works for one child may not work for your next child. You have to learn the beauty and the complexity of your child to be the best parent for them.” “Community is everything. When you have a crisis you have to be surrounded by other people who understand and who can validate what you're experiencing.” “As human beings, as parents, we must invest in our mental health.” “I know you're tired. I know you're overwhelmed. I know you're exhausted but when you have people around you who get it. It's comforting and transformative.” “You do not have to be a coach or a therapist to learn how to facilitate a safe sacred space for moms to share.” “Self-comfort will not sustain you for the long haul of life or caregiving.” “You have to believe that you deserve to invest in your mental health.” “Taking care of yourself is not selfish but when we've heard the term ‘self-care' we tend to equate it with selfishness.” “Focus more on connection than control.” -Jessica Patay Click here for the show notes and extra resources.

Klippare: Emanuel LehtonenProducent: Urban Lindstedt Hosted on Acast. Remember that game we played as kids, Truth or Dare? Well, for our world as caregivers, the truth is hard to say but ultimately freeing and the dare is accepting the consequences of holding it all in. This episode was born out of a conversation on Facebook about the difference between truth telling and playing the victim. Who said that being honest about our journey was the same as acting like a victim anyway? Is that even true?On this practical episode, your host Jessica Patay and life coaches Susanna Peace Lovell and Cindy Kaplan dive into a discussion about the story we tell ourselves, embracing our pain and what it means to be truth tellers and ask for help in a world that tells us to quiet down and be martyr mamas.Learn more about Cindy Kaplan here.Find Cindy's book here.Learn more about Susanna Peace Lovell here.Brave Together is the podcast for We are Brave Together, a not-for-profit organization based in the USA.
What if we changed things up a bit and started speaking to ourselves with loving kindness and compassion?? What if instead of self-judgment and self-criticism in our heads, we heard empathy and encouragement?Jessica Patay believes the key to thriving and surviving amidst chronic hardship is the practice of self-compassion. From this all other compassionate practices will flow–as in acknowledging our own needs and emotions, acknowledging our inborn worthiness, acknowledging our need for connection and community. And then putting into practice self-care and soul care.In this practical episode, host Jessica Patay gives us a crash course in self-compassion. She covers the concept that we have worth just by existing, the difference between Self-Care and Self-Comfort practices, and she shares lessons learned from Kristin Neff's book, The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself and her Soul Care course with Spiritual Therapist Suzi Lula. (This the third of five re-releases of host Jessica Patay's favorite episodes before we introduce to Season 4.!) Jessica loves this episode because, well, she loves her husband! She is extremely grateful that he has been a dedicated, loving, "hands-on dad" over the 22 years they have raised their kids together. She hopes this will inspire other fathers to have a voice and share their experiences in altered fatherhood.Today on the podcast Jessica and Chris Patay talk about fatherhood, and Chris's journey over the years raising Luke, Kate, and their son, Ryan, who has Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare, genetic disorder. Jessica Patay is the Founder and Director of the organization " We Are Brave Together." In our conversation, Jessica shares her family's story and how she decided to start supporting other mothers of children with disabilities by starting this organization. We Are Brave Together is a nonprofit organization that provides respite, community, and resources for mothers caring for children of any age with disabilities, unique needs, or other medical or mental health challenges. As a special promotion, we will personally match any financial donation made to We Are Brave Together--to a maximum of $5,000. No donation is too small. Simply go to their website and make a donation, including a note that you heard about them on the Pivotal People podcast. https://www.wearebravetogether.org/We Are Brave Together provides resources, support groups (both in person and virtual) and retreats for members. Jessica's "Brave Together" podcast is a very popular podcast with great storytelling and discussions. (https://www.wearebravetogether.org/podcast). It's one of my favorite podcasts because Jessica does an excellent job producing episodes that are interesting and enlightening. It has helped me understand the challenges that parents in these circumstances face. Hopefully, the more we all learn, the more we can help others feel accepted and supported, rather than isolated and alone.Find out more at https://www.wearebravetogether.org/
About JessicaJessica Patay is passionate about serving caregiving moms and creating authentic communities. She has always fostered deep, life-giving friendships, and is intentional about growing her community of girlfriends. As a caregiving mom herself, this passion for relationships carries on as she gathers women through We Are Brave Together - to encourage them, mentor them, inspire them, and validate their intense and precious journeys. Her own story as a mom to a child with a disability began in 2003 when her second son, Ryan, was born and diagnosed with a rare, genetic disorder called Prader-Willi syndrome. Within two days of receiving this diagnosis, she received a phone call from a mentor mom from the Prader-Willi California Foundation. Immediately she felt relief and comfort knowing she was not alone. Thankfully, Ryan is sandwiched in the middle of siblings Luke and Kate, both fierce and loving cheerleaders and helpers to Ryan.If Jessica could show up on every mother's doorstep with flowers, chocolate, wine, a witty-and-wise motherhood manual, and… a gorgeous banner that says, "You are not alone"-- she would. And you never know, she just might find a way to make that happen! . The heart of the We Are Brave Together organization was born out of this desire to connect, encourage, and support.Jessica Patay fueled WABT's growth into an international community of over 1500 moms. In the last four years, she has helped launch over 20 support groups throughout the United States, New Zealand and in Australia. She is the host of our podcast, “Brave Together with Jessica Patay,” found on Apple, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Stitcher.
