//The Wire//2300Z October 21, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: IMEX NAVAL DRILLS BEGIN. FLASH FLOODING STRIKES NEW MEXICO. WAR IN MIDDLE EAST CONTINUES TO ESCALATE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: The situation deteriorated somewhat over the weekend via an increase in Hezbollah and Hamas targeting efforts in Israel. Hezbollah launched a targeted attack on PM Netanyahu himself, with three drones allegedly being launched from Lebanon with the goal of targeting his personal residence in Caesarea. At least one of these drones was not interdicted and successfully struck a building within Netanyahu's compound. No casualties were reported as a result of the strike. In Lebanon, Israeli targeting in Beirut has increased substantially over the past few weeks. Israeli forces have started issuing evacuation orders for some of the southern suburbs of Beirut, though not yet to the degree observed so far in Gaza.Over the weekend, significant naval exercises began in the Indian Ocean. Known as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Maritime Exercise (IMEX), this annual naval exercise was conducted this year with the notable participation of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Iran (among others).-HomeFront-Washington: Authorities have formally announced that both pilots of the EA-18G Growler which crashed on Mount Rainier a few days ago were killed in the crash. Authorities have not stated if either attempted to eject prior to the crash, though an investigation is ongoing into the cause of this training accident.Texas: Yesterday afternoon a sightseeing helicopter crashed into an SBA Communications radio tower in Houston. All four people onboard the helicopter were killed in the crash. AC: The radio tower was only partially lit at the time, a detail which had been posted via the FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) 10/073.New Mexico: Significant flash flooding was reported throughout Roswell, causing widespread damage. Roughly 5.78 inches of rain fell in Roswell Saturday night, the most precipitation ever recorded in the area. This caused widespread flash flooding throughout the city, resulting in over 300 people requiring rescue via National Guard assets. At least two fatalities have been reported so far due to the flooding.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though the IMEX drill is somewhat routine among BRICS nations, Russia and Saudi Arabia taking part likely signals that this exercise is shifting from a routine drill to a more power-projection and alliance-building nature (or at least, moreso than is typical for such joint drills). This has been hinted at in various diplomatic circles via the Saudis' increasing relations with Iran. Allegedly, the Saudis have invited Iranian forces to conduct joint follow on drills in the Red Sea at some point, though for now this is just rumor. What is far more certain is that Russia has increasingly taken part in naval exercises throughout the region, likely with the goal of strengthening ties among the opposition to American hegemony in the region. In short, the side-stepping of American power in the region is continuing, along with efforts to undermine and render irrelevant most of America's foreign policy. However, as naval drills are usually a display of hard-power, these moves indicate that this indirect diplomacy may at some point become more confrontational in nature. This dynamic will be most perceptible at the upcoming BRICS summit, which formally begins tomorrow in Russia.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Title:IMEX Wonder Walks and Tough Talks (ft. Tahira Endean | Head of Program | IMEX)Bio:Currently head of programming for IMEX, Tahira is an event designer and curator of education for the MICE industry. She is passionate about global travel, intentional event design, and the integration of technology into our lives and events to enhance the human experience. Deeply committed to the industry, Tahira has been recognized for a range of contributions, including 2022 Influencers with Northstar Meetings and many more.Opening Quote:"Intentional event design is all about being people-centric and purpose-driven, knowing exactly who your audience is, and designing around their needs. So you need to know why you're doing something, and you need to know who you're doing it for. And then you need to bring those things together and then design in a way that is going to help you achieve whatever your objectives are, that success doesn't happen by accident.”Summary:In this episode of No More Bad Events, Scott chats with Tahira Endean about the evolving events industry and the significance of attending IMEX, a major industry gathering. While IMEX is discussed in detail, Tahira also addresses why events fail. And in light of the No More Bad Events mission, this is particularly interesting. She shares stories of what failed events have looked like and how event collectives are studying the reasons why and then, based on their learnings, are developing methodologies to mitigate epic fails … methodologies like empathy mapping and prototyping design. To further ensure nothing but the best events— events that inspire, motivate, and educate like IMEX— Scott and Tahira discuss the complexities of organizing inclusive and sustainable events, the need for upskilling and reskilling post-Covid, the integration of AI as well as incorporating innovative trends and activations based on attendee feedback … things like Intentional Design, Event Profs Unplugged, Wonder Walks and Tough Talks... The latter two activations uncovered the use of nature in trade show booths via a walking tour format, as well as access to private chat rooms for talks about issues like social anxiety and men and mental health. Finally, Tahira whets our appetites for what's coming up at IMEX America in October. And there's a lot to consider. In this role, Freeman is charged with ensuring the industry's full recovery from COVID-19, positioning the industry to seize emerging opportunities in a post-pandemic market environment and further establishing travel as a vital economic force in the United States. Freeman is a seasoned association CEO with a proven track record of building successful organizations that unite member interests, grow member value, increase revenue and unlock growth opportunities. Prior to joining U.S. Travel, Freeman was president and CEO of the Consumer Brands Association, the trade association for America's $2.1 trillion food, beverage and consumer products industry. During his tenure, Freeman launched a strategic campaign to transform the association into a powerful, modern advocacy organization aimed at driving growth and delivering sound regulatory and legislative outcomes that benefit industry leaders and consumers. During his tenure, Freeman grew membership by 35 percent and boosted total revenue by nearly 50 percent. Freeman joined the Consumer Brands Association after serving for five years as president and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA). In that role, Freeman led a successful effort to reform and modernize the AGA, build public support for the gaming industry and open new pathways for industry growth. Under his leadership, the AGA spearheaded a multi-year, research-driven campaign to demonstrate gaming's broad support across the political spectrum and promote the industry's role in spurring economic growth, job creation and tax revenues in communities across more than 40 states where gaming is legal. That campaign created the tailwinds needed to advance AGA's signature initiative achieved under Freeman – the legalization of sports betting in the United States. While leading AGA, Freeman drove a 200 percent increase in membership and doubled association revenue. Freeman previously served as COO of the U.S. Travel Association from 2011 to 2013, helping to conceive and lead a campaign that resulted in the passage of the bipartisan Travel Promotion Act, which was hailed as “the industry's biggest legislative victory in a decade.” In the aftermath of 9/11, Freeman created a blue-ribbon panel headed by former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge to analyze how to improve travel security without compromising travel efficiency. This effort led directly to the creation of TSA PreCheck. Both the Travel Promotion Act and TSA PreCheck demonstrate Freeman's ability to identify industry opportunities, craft a winning policy response and drive campaigns that succeed in gaining broad support among diverse stakeholders. Freeman's previous experience includes roles at APCO Worldwide, America's Health Insurance Plans and Freddie Mac. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Freeman lives in Arlington, Va., with his wife and three children. His LinkedIn profile here. One of RX's largest and most important events globally, JCK has thrived under Bachmann's leadership. Bachmann directly manages JCK while overseeing Event Leaders on both Luxury and JIS and has steered JCK to become an industry leading, award-winning event in the trade show industry, and the most important jewelry buying and educational event globally for the jewelry industry. Luxury, the curated, invitation-only event taking place alongside JCK has also been reimagined under Bachmann's portfolio as the event for the luxury jewelry community. JCK and Luxury bring over 30,000 industry professionals together, including 18,000+ vetted attendees from over 100 countries and 2,000 exhibitors, ranging from designers, manufacturers, and gemstone wholesalers to packaging companies and technology service providers. The show covers 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space at the iconic Venetian Expo and The Venetian Las Vegas. Under her leadership in event strategy, planning, execution, sales, attendance, acquisition, marketing, public relations, operations and special events, Bachmann has achieved all-time high ratings for both exhibitor and attendee satisfaction, loyalty and net promotion for both JCK and Luxury, increasing scores between 15 to 20% and over 30 points in NPS overall. Furthermore, under her strategic and creative direction, JCK has led the way in becoming a top experiential event that attendees not only consider necessary for their business but also eagerly anticipate attending. New to Bachmann's achievements are leading the JCK team in exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 show levels before most shows, in both sales revenue, attendance, and much higher NPS and customer satisfaction scores, with the 2022 edition marking a milestone year in the event's history and winning Trade Show Executives Gold 100 “Greatest Trade Show” of the year award. This was then followed up under Bachmann's leadership with the 2023 edition continuing to grow to a sold out show floor and increasing attendance once again. As a member of RX's senior leadership team, Bachmann plays a critical role in shaping event leaders across RX US, leading bi-monthly Event Leader meetings where key issues are discussed and best practices are shared across the division leaders. Bachmann also leads the way with activations and experiences, playing a crucial part of JCK and serving as a model for other B2B events, along with increasing the focus on DE&I in all the industries she serves forging partnerships with key members of diverse groups including the Black in Jewelry Coalition and leading by example at her shows and RX. Bachmann utilizes her experience in change management by serving as the Executive Sponsor and liaison for the show teams with the digital team during RX's roll out of a new registration system across RX US. Bachmann currently serves on the executive boards of the American Gem Society, Jewelers' Security Alliance, 24 Karat Club of New York, Women's Jewelry Association and UFI Global Congress Advisory, as well as on the GEM Awards committee and chair of the JCK Industry Fund committee. Oli Bailey, interaction designer at IMEX, and Panos Moutafis, who is co-founder/CEO at Zenus AI, a company developing ethical facial analysis tech, are a great combination. Joining IMEX, ‘where the global meetings industry comes together', right after its first event nearly 20 years ago, Oli has worked across pretty much every facet of the show/the brand. He knows his IMEX onions. Meanwhile, Panos has worked on facial analysis since 2011, founding Zenus – a company committed to protecting people's privacy while providing pivotal data to clients, typically at business events and brand activations. Talking to host Adam Parry, Oli and Panos discuss the motivation for the Zenus/IMEX partnership, looking at strategic event design, neutralising natural bias with data and the importance of multi-measurement tools. This truly engaging 50 minutes sees Panos highlight the difference between facial recognition and facial analysis before addressing relevant privacy and ethics concerns. Look out too for Oli's take on educating the IMEX audience about Zenus tech and the importance of transparency. It's all here. To keep up to date with all the news, subscribe for free here. In an exclusive interview, we had the opportunity to talk with UFI President Michael Duck, who serves as executive vice president, commercial development of Informa Markets, and UFI CEO Kai Hattendorf, to get the inside scoop on the breaking news that UFI kicked off its first Global Congress in U.S. with the launch of a North America Regional Chapter. We talked about: Why the regional chapter was formed in North America and why now What UFI regional chapters do and how they support members Who will lead the North America Chapter (volunteer and staffing) What benefits members will receive from the chapter Why is UFI different from the U.S. based associations When and where the chapter will meet next On Nov. 1, UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, kicked off its 90th UFI Global Congress in Las Vegas — the first time for the global gathering to meet in the U.S. — with a member vote during its annual General Assembly to approve the launch of a North America chapter. Exhibition Place Toronto General Manager Laura Purdy will chair the new chapter together with vice chairs Kim Carcone, executive vice president, global market events for the Toy Association, and Pepe Navarro, director general for Tarsus/Informa. UFI will work with MAD Event Management, a trade show management company led by President Martha Donato and CEO Marty Glynn, to manage the activities for the new North America chapter. Back story As an integrated part of the industry association ecosystem, UFI has long been active across North America. More than 65 national and international exhibition end events industry associations — including the Society of Independent Show Organizers and the Exhibition Services and Contractors Association in the U.S., AMPROFEC and AMEREF in Mexico and Canadian Association of Exposition Management in Canada — are UFI members. “UFI is a trailblazer for collaboration among industry associations – and has been for more than 20 years, with great success around the world,” Hattendorf said. “Having seen multi-year stable growth in membership from across North America, UFI opens a North America chapter to ensure these members are well represented in the organization,” said Duck, who helped UFI open its first regional chapter more than 20 years ago. At the time, that regional chapter covered Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa. As of today, UFI will have five regional chapters, including North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Latin America. At least 5% of its global membership is based in each of these regions, Hattendorf said. “We have seen our membership numbers rise constantly across North America,” Duck said. “North America represents a vital and growing share of UFI membership, with 7% of UFI's 830 member companies based in the region and more than 25% of UFI members with active business in the region.” Major trade show companies, like Informa, RX and Clarion, are part of the European chapter, as their headquarters are located in Europe. “Through the chapter, we make sure that the voices and needs of UFI members from Canada, U.S. and Mexico are well represented in UFI's governing bodies, including the Executive Committee and the Board, as well as through the Chapter leadership,” Duck said. Hattendorf added, “We can also serve our members and the industry in the region better through the chapter structure and its corresponding regional office.” Podcast host Danica Tormohlen also shared the top five new stories from Trade Show News Network, Exhibit News Now and Corporate Event News as November begins. Our guests UFI President Michael Duck is Executive Vice President – Commercial Development of Informa Markets and Informa Plc. In this episode, we had a conversation with John Rozum about his experience producing the record-breaking The Utility Expo, fueled by federal funding from historic and transformative legislation passed in 2021. In fact, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is expected to increase federal spending on infrastructure by about $550 billion over the next decade, nearly all through grants to state and local governments, which own much of the nation's infrastructure. The biennial trade show returned to Louisville, Ky., with more than 21,000 utility construction professionals from all 50 states and 60 countries. The trade show, held Sept. 26-28 at the Kentucky Exposition Center, featured more than 900 exhibitors showcasing the latest products and solutions for the utility construction industry. Exhibits covered a record 1.5 million net square feet, and the event featured equipment test drives and interactive product demonstrations. The Utility Expo is owned by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, a North America-based international trade group representing off-road equipment manufacturers and suppliers with more than 1,000 companies and more than 200 product lines in the agriculture and construction-related industry sectors worldwide. The equipment manufacturing industry in the United States supports 2.3 million jobs and contributes roughly $316 billion to the economy every year. In addition to The Utility Expo, AEM also owns and produces CONEXPO-CON/AGG, The International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), and the Commodity Classic. We talked about: How The Utility Expo increased attendance by 30% over its last show in 2021 and by 10% over its previous attendance record in 2019 How the biennial show grew from 1.3 to 1.5 million square feet of exhibit space The new community zone that debuted in 2023 Why the show has made its home in Louisville since 1987 What's trending in utility equipment: Sustainable equipment and accessories The state of the utility industry: Strong due to infrastructure investments, which are expected to increase in coming years And so much more! Episode 343: Tammy Blount-Canavan's career has spanned 30+ years and two countries, including executive leadership at Tourism Vancouver, CEO of the Tacoma Regional CVB, architect and inaugural Chair of the Washington Tourism Alliance, President and CEO of the Monterey County CVB, and now President and CEO of Visit Seattle. Tammy is a Past Chair of Destinations International. Tammy has been recognized as CEO of the Year, one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry, twice as one of the top 25 Most Influential Women in the Industry, Leadership Supplier of the Year in the Meetings Industry, Top 100 Most Inspirational Women in the Meetings Industry, CSUMBs School of Business 2018 Community Leader of the Year, won the Global Leadership Award from Destinations International and IMEX and in 2023 is being inducted into the Smart Women in Meetings Hall of Fame. In this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Tammy Blount-Canavan about some of Visit Seattle's ingenious campaigns, such as rain booths in Arizona and coffee shop takeovers, which embody the unique character of Seattle. She describes how the community built a city-wide selling strategy to expand the conventions market. Tammy also shares some of the community and wider partnerships they're involved in and how they help make the tourism industry successful. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Some of the directions you can go in when you build a career in travel and tourism marketing How Visit Seattle promotes the values of their community when they're out and about at shows Some of the creative ways they share more about their communities' benefits including a rain booth in Arizona and coffee shop takeovers The challenges that COVID-19 threw in Visit Seattle's path and how they have overcome them by collaborating on a city-wide selling strategy How they make partnerships successful by talking about what they want to accomplish, how they plan to get there, and how they make sure stakeholders have complementary skills Innovative Marketing Experiences We spotlight the innovative approach to destination marketing taken by Visit Seattle this week. Rather than solely relying on traditional tactics like purchasing ads and attending trade shows, they put a unique spin on destination marketing by creating fun and memorable experiences at events that underscore their core values. Visit Seattle has a knack for adding creative twists to their campaigns; last summer, they introduced a ‘rain booth' in California and Arizona. This structure sprinkled light rain, allowing people to experience Seattle's famous ‘cozy season' amidst the summer heat. Participants could even create their own movie posters as though they were in Seattle, sparking conversations about the city's unique charm. In addition to these fresh marketing strategies, Visit Seattle capitalizes on the wealth of local celebrities and athletes who take pride in sharing the story of their city. Their ongoing “I Know a Place” campaign features local residents expressing their love for Seattle and its hidden gems. This not only highlights iconic locations but also unveils lesser-known aspects of the city. Exemplifying Core Values We also discuss how Visit Seattle shares how their core values—innovation, creativity, and inclusivity— not only shape their city but also their marketing strategies. Inclusivity, for instance, is manifested through partnerships with Seattle Bank and Interventionalist, supporting traditionally underrepresented BIPOC-owned businesses. Sponsorships enable people to experience these businesses firsthand, with Visit Seattle highlighting them in their campaigns. This demonstrates a proactive approach to diversity, actively working with these businesses to tell their stories instead of merely stating the presence of diversity. Creativity is another cornerstone of Visit Seattle's approach. The city boasts the title of the glassblowing capital of the world, second only to Italy, and hosts an annual festival named Refract, a month-long celebration of local and renowned glass artists. Along with Refract, they organize Cloudbreak, focused on music, and Museum Month, both of which showcase Seattle's vibrant arts scene. Their third core value, innovation, is encapsulated in Seattle's identity as the birthplace of global tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon, retail powerhouse Costco, and numerous other innovative ventures. This value traces back to the World's Fair six decades ago that birthed the iconic Space Needle, highlighting the city's longstanding history of groundbreaking ideas. Their commitment to these values is exemplified in events like the recent Pride Parade, reinforcing that inclusivity in Seattle goes beyond words—it is deeply rooted in the population's values. Through these unique approaches, Visit Seattle is not just selling a destination but narrating an authentic story of a community that thrives on innovation, creativity, and inclusivity. What do climate change, sustainability, and events have to do with each other? A LOT! Two weeks ago in one of my education sessions at IMEX — an events industry convention that has won awards for its sustainability efforts — I was surprised that only 10% of the attendees were currently incorporating sustainability questions in their venue requests for proposal or their events. To boot, a few other sustainability-focused sessions had the same response. When I shared this stat with Shawna McKinley, an event sustainability consultant and instructor based in Vancouver, Canada, we decided to chat about how that aligns with the latest research from SKIFT and SITE, how its planners biggest concerns — rising food costs, event disruption and reduced attendance — are actually affected by climate change. Join Shawna and I for the next #EatingAtAMeeting LIVE (October 26) to learn ways to incorporate sustainability practices into the overall event planning process, how your food and beverage choices must part of the sustainability equation, and how not to feel feel powerless to act.

We have talked before about how marketing, sales, and customer experience should work together, rather than in silos... But we have never had a guest explain there is an actual framework and strategy around this called "Revenue Operations" (Rev Ops). Having alignment of sales, marketing, and customer success across the FULL customer lifecycle is a way to be more efficient across all departments, and Rev Ops helps you get there. Episode 137- The Critical Role of Education with Dr. Krzysztof Celuch We are delighted to be speaking with another rockstar in our industry today! Dr. Krzysztof Celuch has recently been awarded a place in the Hall of Leaders of our industry! He has had an awesome career in academics. He has been with the Convention and Business Bureau and volunteered for many different organizations. He joins us from Poland to tell his inspiring story and talk about his certifications and the importance of education. He also discusses the academic and voluntary work he does. We hope you enjoy listening to today's fascinating conversation with Professor Krzysztof Celuch! Bio: Professor Krzysztof Celuch, Ph.D. MBA, DBA, CMM, CITE, CIS, HMCC, CED – an academic professor and an entrepreneur, Krzysztof specializes in event experiences, event marketing, and management. His scientific research, training, and keynotes are all built on knowledge of economics, business psychology, sociology, marketing, and cultural studies. He conducts workshops and training, gives lectures, and moderates panel discussions, debates, and management meetings. He implements research projects, builds strategies, and provides business consulting services. He helps organizations, institutions, and companies in the areas of management, communication, motivation, and business development, with particular emphasis on the meetings industry (event marketing). He is an associate professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, deputy rector of Vistula School of Hospitality, and visiting professor in Austria, France, the USA, and China. Dr. Krzysztof's education Dr. Krzysztof believes in education because it can be used to change the world. He likes to listen to others and learn from them. He was happy to have fulfilled his educational goals this year. He joined various industry associations' certification programs and focused on university education. He likes to tie the different aspects of what he has learned together, implement his knowledge, and share it to bring some heart to the next generation of leaders. Dr. Krysztof's journey Dr. Krysztof used to be a traditional folklore dance instructor. When he was around nineteen, he focused on dancing and started studying at a sports academy. After about two years, he decided to change direction and began working as a tour guide. He was also writing his bachelor's degree thesis on incentive travel at the time and read the only Polish book available on business tourism. A coincidence Coincidentally, a guest in one of Krzysztof's tour groups was Rob Davidson, the author of the book he had read on business tourism. Krzysztof asked him many questions, and Rob encouraged Krzysztof to become a member of MPI. Step by step Dr. Krzysztof joined MPI in 2005. He continued to move forward step by step, writing, listening, and connecting with industry leaders. Future Leaders Forum Together with several organization leaders, Dr. Krzysztof started the first chapter of the Future Leaders Forum in Warsaw. Academics Dr. Krzysztof loves academia and sharing his knowledge! His academic journey began with a dance movement in high school. NGO The first NGO Dr. Krzysztof got involved with was the International Association of Folklore Festival Traditions (CIOFF). Organizations After joining MPI, Dr. Krzysztof joined IMEX and then the Convention Bureau. He spent five years working for the Warsaw Convention Bureau, during which he loved promoting the capital of Poland! He started as a student intern and worked his way to becoming a manager. The next step in his career was to become the head of Poland's Convention Bureau, and he spent the next fifteen years there. A private university After graduating with his Master's degree, a private university asked Krzysztof to share his knowledge about tourism and the meetings industry. He is still with them today. Giving back Dr. Krzysztof believes that we should give back what we have previously received. Decisions We need the right information to make informed decisions. Dr. Krzysztof believes that it is crucial to consult the heart and include an emotional component in the decision-making process. The American way Dr. Krzysztof enjoys American efficiency and the American way of getting down to business and following up. But he sometimes misses the European chit-chat and storytelling. A challenging industry The hospitality industry can be challenging. Dr. Krzysztof finds that people new to the industry tend to lack inspiration. He also finds them not as motivated as those with more experience, unwilling to work hard if they do not earn vast amounts for their efforts, and unprepared when they have arranged to meet someone. Preparing Dr. Krzysztof believes it is vital to be focused and prepared when meeting someone. It's worth spending a few minutes having a coffee or a drink with them before the meeting to get to know them. The Internet The internet is a helpful tool for preparing for a meeting because it allows you to learn about those you intend to meet. Building relationships Half of Dr. Krzysztof's clients are based in Europe, half of them are in the Middle East, and a few are in the US. In the US, building relationships used to take much longer than it did in Europe. However, since Covid, things have changed. Volunteering Dr. Krzysztof spent years volunteering for MPI and many other organizations. Through that, he has met many new people and learned about different cultures and religions. When you volunteer, NGOs can help you build your position and become who you truly are. Krzysztof points out that this is our life and our planet, so we all need to engage, get involved, share our knowledge, and give back in any way we can!
