Keeper Of The Greens is proudly brought to you by Colin Campbell Chemicals. Click on their name or go to and it will take you straight to their website for more information or simply go to www.campbellchemicals.com.au Recorded LIVE in the Maintenance Facility at Pennant Hills Golf Club. Liam Ash could easily be confused with someone twice his age if you looked only at his list of places worked or had a conversation with him about greenkeeping, such is his level of experience and knowledge. But this well experienced young man now holds the keys to the castle, as he puts it, as Superintendent at one of Sydney's premier golf clubs, Pennant Hills Golf Club. My conversation with Liam takes us through three states on the east coast of Australia, looking after turf grasses across the whole spectrum that grow in hot climates all the way to very cold. Liam started mowing grass at a very young age and it wasn't long before he began his greenkeeping career on the first rung like all of us, as an apprentice. Hard work and determination put Liam on a path to working for some of the best people in the industry before turning his hand to maintaining turf on private golf holes for some of Sydney's more wealthy people, before golf course greenkeeping called out his name again. This second stint came with a more hardened greenkeeper, one that could hold his own with the best at still quite a young age. You're really going to enjoy this interview I have with Liam hearing about his broad experience gained in such a short space of time. Pennant Hills Golf Club itself is turning 100 this year and is soon to embark on a redesign which Liam gives us some insight on. There's lots in this one so come and join me for some fun as Liam and I chat with some unexpected noises in the background! Don't forget to join both Nadeem, from the sponsor of this podcast episode Colin Campbell Chemicals, and I at this year's ASTMA Conference in Adelaide, June 19 - 22. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! Sixth Sunday of Easter - John 14:15-21 Sue Martin grew up playing in nature, living beside Devlin's Creek in Northern Sydney, with parents deeply committed to family and faith, especially a faith that does justice. Sue was educated by the Good Samaritan Sisters at Pennant Hills where she started to imagine herself as an eco-warrior. Sue studied agricultural science at Sydney University, becoming an agronomist, wanting to make our farming landscapes treed again. She married David and had four boys quickly and now has six amazing grandchildren. Her parish life is at St Madeleine's Kenthurst, and she is active in the synodal journey for Parramatta Diocese assisting with the Laudato Si' team there. Sue's working life has included working in school, university, catchment management and local government settings. When she commenced employment as the sustainability officer at St Ignatius' College, Riverview in 2009, she also found her home in the spirituality of the Jesuits. In 2019, the Jesuits called Sue to the position of national Project Officer for, what they then called, Reconciliation with Creation. Sue also juggled the part-time Caritas National Earthcare Coordinator from 2019 to 2022. Since 2022 Sue has worked full-time assisting with Jesuit ministries better respond to Laudato si' both in Australia and Asia Pacific. These responsibilities include assisting the coordination of RAOEN (the Rivers Above ecclesial network) caring for oceans, Indigenous people and our Church across Asia Pacific. Globally Sue is also part of the Ecojesuit team.

On the show this week, Thursday, 10 September, we welcome founder of CIS Greg Lindsay AO. From a backyard shed in Pennant Hills to shop-top above Uncle Pete's Toys in St Leonards and now Macquarie Street in Sydney's CBD, Greg built the CIS from a one-man operation into the self-sustaining institute it is today. His goal throughout was to "make the philosophic foundations of a free society once more a living intellectual issue," as Friedrich Hayek said we must. Join us live, to hear Greg's story and ask your own questions about how he turned a timeless idea into one of Australia's leading think tanks.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney in 1992, Daniel worked in a variety of jobs – as a storeman with David Jones and Grace Bros before travelling overseas to the USA and Europe and then around Australia. On returning to Sydney, Daniel took up a job with the NSW Department of Sport & Recreation as a Swimming Teacher which led him to undertake a Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) in 1997 at the University of Wollongong. Following the Grad Dip Ed, Daniel relocated to New Zealand in 1998 to take up a teaching position at Ruapotaka Primary school Auckland where he taught for 12 months before returning to Sydney where he taught at Holy Family Primary School late East Granville from 2000 to 2006 and then at St. Agatha’s Primary School at Pennant Hills. Realising that Primary teaching was not the best fit, Daniel decided to return to University to complete Bachelor of Marine Science at Macquarie University in 2009 followed by a PhD in Biological Sciences in 2011, graduating in 2017. Daniel’s PhD thesis was “Direct and indirect impacts of a non-native predator: foraging by Carcinus maenas on native bivalves of south-east Australian estuaries” Daniel now works as the Curriculum Co-ordinator at Parramatta Marist High School where he was formerly the Head of Mathematics, Statistics and Data and he couldn’t be happier.
