Geoff and Marie's Good Life: Part 9Lucy's TurnGeoff finally gets more quality time with Lucy.Based on posts by Only In My Mind, in 15 parts. Listen to the Podcast at Explicit Novels.I was bringing in the bedsheets from the washing line when my lovelies got home. Colin was inside doing his art homework alone as I'm afraid that art isn't my forté. From the way Angie bounced up the path like a tall, supple Tigger, I assumed that their mission had been successful. Marie followed behind at a more stately pace, but I could tell by her expression that she was pleased."Geoff! It's perfect," Angie enthused. "Show him, Marie!"Marie finally caught up with our friend. "She's not wrong, Geoffrey," she admitted. "The moment we saw it, we knew that was the one." She felt into her handbag and took out a small square box."Just like you and me then," I reminded her, kissing the top of her head."You'll get anywhere saying things like that, you smooth devil," my wife smiled as she showed me our purchase."So what happens now?" I asked. It appeared that they were in the dark too. Did we give her it now, like an engagement ring? Or wait until the ceremony, like a wedding ring?I decided. I took Angie's left hand and dropped to one knee. "Angela, you have added a new thread to the tapestry of our lives. Will you agree to be my betrothed?"Marie was quick to respond. She took her friend's hand from me and turned Angie towards her. "Angela, you have been my closest friend for decades, will you now be my betrothed?""Oh! God! Yes! Thank you. I love you both so much," wailed Angie, hopping up and down in floods of happy tears.Marie held out the ring they had chosen and bought together and together my wife and I slipped it onto the fourth finger of Angie's left hand. As I'd suggested, they had chosen something called a Russian Ring, made of three interwoven strands of different shades of gold. It was perfect. I resolved to get my little Mediterranean goddess a matching necklace. There was the sound of applause from behind us and we turned, rather startled, truth to be told, to find Colin beaming at us, the drawing in his hand forgotten."I think you're supposed to kiss her now, Grandma, Grandad," he observed. We couldn't fault his grasp of etiquette so we did; very chastely and properly with no tongues."Mum's gonna go proper monkey poo this time," he predicted, quite astutely. "Glad I'm not the one that has to tell her." He smiled, congratulated us all and then asked for our opinions of his drawing. We were all impressed, both by his artwork and his attitude and told him so. He disappeared happily back inside to put his drawing safely in his bag."He's not wrong about Linda," I pointed out. "I was thinking about this while I was running and I think I should take her out for tea tomorrow and tell her about our, er; does 'new situation' sound about right?""Thank God!" Marie breathed a sigh of relief. "I don't think she'd accept this updated version of 'the talk' from me. Anyway, I did the one about boys, boobs and periods, now it's your turn."I went and switched the oven on and chose a bottle of wine as I waited for it to reach 180°C. I'd picked up a bottle of Ribeiro in our local supermarket and a Spanish white seemed to fit nicely with the ingredients so I parked it in the fridge to chill.I got the tray with the onions, tomatoes, garlic cloves and potatoes and glugged over a little olive oil before putting it all in the oven for twenty minutes and then went off to see my girls. Angie had calmed down and they were trying to decide her outfit for our ceremony."What about Padme's rainbow dress?" I suggested. I'd had nothing urgent after lunch and had done some research. Angie gave me a long appraising look and typed 'padme rainbow' into the search engine on her phone. She selected 'images' and then studied the screen intently for longer than I expected. Still silent, she showed Marie the dress. "He's a clever old sod, really, isn't he?" My beloved observed. "That's beautiful, and it's perfect for your body shape."Angie agreed. "That's it. I was considering Rey's outfit but this is better. This is the one I want.""You can actually buy these on-line," I offered."Not a chance!" Retorted Angie. Marie looked as puzzled as me at how emphatic Angie's response was. "I'm sure that some are okay," Angie conceded. "But I've seen too many instances on Facebook where the seller shows an image of the original but what actually arrives looks like it was sewn in the dark from old curtains by an arthritic chimp. I want it to look just like that picture.""But at least you'll know how much it is going to cost, dear," Marie said. "Who knows how much your student friends will have to pay to find a fabric like that?""Don't care," Said a defiant Angie. "I can afford whatever I want and it's my money after all."Marie leaned in for a kiss. "We'll contribute too. We always intended to.""No. Thank you, but no." Angie was adamant. "You bought me that beautiful ring. I realize that it would be rude to offer to pay for that, but everything else; everything," she stressed that last word, "is on me."My wife and I shared another look of surprise at our friend's determined outburst. "But Ange," Marie began."Everything, Marie. You've been so kind to me for so long. And these last few weeks;” She teared up again. "You really don't know, do you?"I shrugged. We were into Donald Rumsfeld territory here with 'unknown unknowns' and I didn't think that this was the moment to dive down that particular rabbit hole."You know that apartment I live in?" Angie asked. We did. It was in a massive, tastefully converted, Victorian building near the university. "Don't you think it's rather large and expensive for just one person?" We both just did some head wobbles, shoulder shakes and comme ci, comme ça, hand gestures to indicate that we had wondered but."It's not that expensive," she continued, eyes sparkling with mischief. "Not for me, anyway. You see." She paused for effect. "I own the entire building. A lettings management company deals with renting the other apartments; I just live off the income. I only do the consultancy work for you know who," she tapped the side of her nose. "to stop me getting bored and my brain shutting down." She was winding me up because she knew I suspected that she was some kind of spook."Don't worry about the cost," she said cheerfully. "I can afford it. Last time I checked I had over two million pounds just in my savings accounts."She looked gleefully at the expressions on our faces. "And, once we're officially joined, I'm changing my will to leave it all to you and your kids. Colin certainly won't need a student loan when he goes to Uni.""Angie, darling. There's no need," Marie protested."Who else then?" Angie challenged her. "You two are the closest I've had to a family since I ditched that last useless waste of DNA. I've had more fun, romance, sex and affection from you two lunatics in the last six weeks than from both my husbands combined over two decades."Marie looked helplessly at me. I knew exactly what to do. I leaned forward. "Angie?" I said softly, taking her hand in mine."Yes, Geoff?" She replied, returning my loving gaze."Please can I have an Aston Martin DB12?"We collapsed in each other's arms in fits of giggles. Marie swiped me fondly across the head. "You nutcase. Get back in the kitchen and get our tea ready."I checked, and the potatoes were starting to cook, so I laid the chicken and chorizo slices on top, added the herbs and spices and put the tray back in the oven. "Alexa, set a timer for twenty minutes." Then I went off in search of Colin.I told him that I needed a private chat with his mum. "You think?" Was his smart-ass response. Sometimes he makes me so proud.Anyway, he texted one of his friends and persuaded her to wangle an invite to go over straight from school the following evening to do their homework together. Linda would collect him around seven."So Colin. Mia. Is she nice?""Yes Grandad. She's nice. No Grandad, she's not my girlfriend. We're only thirteen but we get on just fine as friends." Hell. The kid's more mature than half of the lads I used to play rugby with.We chatted some more until Alexa's alarm went off and I hit the kitchen again. Dropped the sliced peppers into the tray, a good mix up and back in for the last twenty minutes.I was starting to set the table when Marie and Angie came in to take over and chased me away to watch the news on TV. Angie had already taken her ring off and had decided to keep it in its box until they were with their friends. Then Marie intended to propose again in front of them all. It sounded lovely and I would have liked to see it, but I'd agreed that this was their moment.Linda arrived on time and about ten minutes later we sat down to eat. She'd called to collect a baguette on the way home as I'd asked and we used it to mop up the juices from our plates. The wine paired well; even Colin agreed, though he only got a sip of his mum's. Perhaps, when he's sixteen, Linda will let him have a glass with his meals. After we'd finished, the ladies declared that they would clear the table as I'd done all of the cooking. It had hardly been a chore but I wasn't about to argue. Instead, I went and asked Colin if he was okay with Aunty Angie being, well, betrothed to Grandma and Grandad. He thought carefully for a while. "Is anyone going to get hurt?"It was a reasonable question. "I hope not. But it's always possible. Even two people who love each other can eventually drift apart.""But you're all happy now?" He persisted. "You all want this?""Yes. All of us." I confirmed."What will I call her then?" He asked. That hadn't occurred to me. "Whatever you and Angie decide. That seems the fairest to me."His face lit up. "When you've told mum, I'm going to ask Aunty Angie if I can call her; Grangie." He announced triumphantly. There were still tears of laughter streaming down my face when the women joined us five minutes later. They all looked suspiciously at the pair of us."You had to be there," I told them, then we cracked up again. Before Linda and Colin left I told her that, as Colin had a homework date the following day, earning a glare from him, I'd treat her to a meal after work as we'd both be on our own. I suggested a Thai in town and we agreed to meet there at five fifteen. She looked warily at me, but I'd been practicing my innocent expression and gave nothing away. Certainly, nothing had been said that evening to suggest there was a problem.Angie saw them off with us and then said her own goodbyes. I copped a feel of her bum as we kissed, well, we're engaged now, or something. Marie must have shared my sentiment only she went for a tit. I slapped her hand gently. "Enough of that. She'll never get away if you start on her nipples." They both reluctantly agreed and then there was just the two of us again."Are we being silly, Geoff? Starting a new way of living? At our age? Is this just desperation?" It wasn't like Marie to second guess herself.I hugged her to me. "I don't think so. We have time, money and our health. The kids are okay so this is our opportunity to be us. Not teacher, boss, researcher, mum or dad; just us. If this is what makes both of us happy, why fight it? You promised, if we reach a place where you're uncomfortable, then you'll tell me. I promise you the same. So let's go and see what's out there.""Tell you what," she replied pulling me closer. "Get the rest of that wine and I'll sit on your lap and we'll finish it while we cuddle then, maybe, an early night?"I was up early next morning. We did make love the night before and it was slow, sensual and fulfilling. We'd both slept like babies. When I'd finished in the bathroom, Marie was looking at her phone. "That was a text from Peter. He and Jen are coming back from Canada on Monday and thought they might stop in to see us on the way back home." She looked worried. "Do we tell them? Or just Pete? But then how do we tell Pete without Jen hearing? Do we insist he keeps it a secret from her? ""We need to make a choice," I told her. "We're telling Linda because she deserves to know the unconventional relationship that Colin will see when Angie is here. Pete isn't in that position but, I think that if Linda knows then her brother should too. And I also think that, if Pete knows, it would be unfair to expect him to keep it from Jen. I'm not sure about discussing the rest of the girls with him; I'm tempted to tell Linda because she'll get suspicious if we're never free to look after Colin on Wednesdays if she wants to go out with Mike or if she has to work late."That's fair. I'll tell Pete that they are welcome to stay and we're looking forward to seeing them. But, Geoff?""Yes?""For pity's sake, will you move the toy box out of the playroom and make sure there's no lube or condoms left in the drawers?""I'll do it now."The rest of the day was quite mundane. Breakfast, grocery shopping, coffee at home and then a walk to the park. "I think I'm happy, Geoff," my wife announced as we strolled. "Not just content; actually happy. My friends have you in their lives, I'm even closer to them than ever and Angie," Marie's voice choked. "I've never seen her so alive. Thank you."I wasn't even tempted to be flippant. "Thank you too. It's strange, but making love to your friends seems to have brought me closer to you. I'm just so relieved you aren't jealous. You aren't are you?"She considered. "No. Truthfully; not at all. What about you?""No. Me neither. In fact, I know you have a bit of a thing for Sue, and it's, I dunno, sweet."She punched me playfully. "I still like Sam though," she admitted."So, now you have both, and me and Angie too."She gave a big happy sigh and we turned and made our way home. The weather was still fine so Marie set off at ten to four to walk to the Black Swan to meet her friends. I red for half an hour and then caught the bus into town. Linda could drop me back off at home on the way to collect Colin from Mia's house.I'd reserved a table and waited at the bar for Linda. She rushed in, all flustered, only two minutes late. "It's okay," I told her. "We're not running to a timetable here."Sorry, Dad," she apologized. "Isn't there always some clown who decides that half past four on a Friday afternoon is the perfect time to start making urgent phone calls?""Is it settled?" I asked her. "Or do you need ten minutes to make some more calls of your own?""God, no!" She laughed. "I'll start working for free after finishing time when my boss stops checking her watch when folk arrive in the morning with just minutes to spare."The waiter saw that my guest had arrived and invited us to follow him to our table. The place was quiet that early so he gave us a place with a nice view over the river."Is your job getting you down?" I asked. She worked in the distribution office for a large retailer."No, the work is fine, the people are great, it's just that our boss is so insecure in her abilities that she sticks rigidly to corporate policy, and it sometimes gets in the way of actual work.""Go on," I invited her. We didn't get to chat like this as much as I'd like."Okay. So: There are six people in our office; two men, four women. We lost both of the guys for a full day on Tuesday to go on a gender harassment awareness course. One's gay and the other is a fifty year old sweetheart. They could have done effectively the same course on-line in an hour but no, she had to make sure that her boss saw our guys in person to make her look good." She gave an exaggerated sigh. "Those lads get more grief from us girls than they'd ever; Oh! It's so frustrating.""I know," I sympathized. "I regarded part of my role as lab manager as insulating the people who actually generated income from stupid policies like that. I'd do what the law required but, if an adult technician doesn't know that it's not okay to touch a colleagues bum, no matter how cute or pert it is, a course isn't enough; a dismissal is much more effective. It solves the immediate issue and also serves 'pour encourager les autres' as your Great Gran would have said. An object lesson to the others," I said in reply to her unspoken question. We chatted in the same vein as we looked through the menu and had just finished our deliberations when our waiter appeared. We ordered spring rolls and prawn toast, I ordered a pork massaman, Linda chose a chicken panang and we decided to share a green papaya salad.

It's that time of year again - the Super Duper Bowl, and we have a super duper podcast to enjoy. Some years ago, we were just starting this research, and the Microsoft found Paul Allen passed away. So as an experiment, I asked three people we'd spoken to on the flipside, who knew him, to come forward and help us chat with Paul. At the time I didn't know that we could "invite anyone" - but figured if we could invite Paul, he'd be more comfortable with some of his pals. Much to my chagrin (It's in the book BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE and in the documentary TALKING TO PAUL ALLEN, JUNIOR SEAU AND DAVE DUERSON on YouTube. Paul Allen showed Jennifer that two football players who had suffered from CTE were there to greet him. Why? Because of Paul's brain institute. Jennifer didn't know that there was an institute, I did - but they came forward to tell Jennifer that "Joe Namath had cured his CTE using oxygen therapy." She didn't get it the first two times they came through - because she doesn't know football, didn't know the Quarterback they were showing her. It was only after looking up what they were saying "Quarterback" "CTE" did I discover that Joe has done that. Watch the film, it's free. But today, Junior stopped by. As noted, after he showed up initially, I invited his widow Gina to do a session with Jennifer. Jennifer didn't know who Junior or Gina was - but does so on camera in the film. It's uncanny. I don't expect anyone to race out and watch the film - but one day it will become an important piece of the puzzle. So we are used to talking to Junior. (Who took his own life after suffereing from CTE. He and his widow had an amazing reunion, and I thank her for letting me film it. She's happily remarried, living a wonderful life, and if she runs across this podcast, this description, she'll know what I'm referring to. Junior talks about how people on the flipside can attend the Super Bowl, but mostly through the participation of their loved ones onstage. So if "Uncle Pete" or "Aunt Betty" seems to be rooting for one of the teams from the Flipside, do not be surprised. I asked our moderator on the flipside, Luana Anders if anyone else wanted to come forward; and it was Prince. We haven't had him on the podcast as of late - but he wanted to point out that anyone can connect with him, anyone can call him for assistance. (Junior also said that "anyone can play in his touch (mental) football games" as well. At some point, I asked Prince about helping someone on this side play a song. Now - if one listens carefully (and ignores me) they can hear Jennifer (who doesn't know chords or how to transpose guitar chords to piano as I do...) She says "He's saying "G" Then E minor. Then D. (I heard C, but she clearly says D.) Then C. It wasn't until after the podcast was over that I went to the internet to look for Prince songs that start with "G and then E minor." And then, to my dismay, shock - when I was putting up the subtitles, I could SEE WHAT JENNIFER SAYS. She says "G" then "E minor" then "D" then "C." (later she adds "B and F) But look it up. G Em I never meant to cause you any sorrow D C I never meant to cause you any pain G Em I only want one time to see you laughing D G I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain. As I was writing this, I wrote to Jennifer and told her what the chords were for and she replied: "He said purple rain - just thought it was... whatever. Amazing!" Yes. It is amazing. Next time I'll play it properly. Enjoy. #PRINCE #SUPERBOWL2024 #JUNIORSEAU

Welcome back to the Epics Podcast. I started this podcast because I believe that the foundation of hate and discrimination in our world comes from a lack of understanding of those who are different from ourselves. We plan to combat that by hearing everyone's stories, that we can better understand them, be a part of creating real positive change. This week, on the 13th episode of Epics, I'm so pleased to announce my guest Dr. Elijah Nicholas. A twelve-time published author, Dr. Elijah Nicholas is also an Actor, and Advocate. He was assigned the female sex at birth, so Elijah spent almost half of his life in the US Military, as a woman before retiring from the US Air Force as a Lt Col in 2012. He started his gender reassignment from female to male in 2018 at the age of 48. We were able to cover a variety of topics in our interview such as his experiences of racism, navigating gender roles both pre and post transition, and his new book “Madoodle”! Madoodle is an LGBTQI+ friendly family & children's book featuring Madoodle (aka Madison), a ten-year-old girl whose Uncle Pete was once her favorite Auntie Mary. And it is based on Dr. Elijah's personal experiences with family as he navigated his gender transition. Buy Elijah's book Madoodle! The link on this episode. As always that will not only support Elijah but a local bookstore near you AND this podcast!

On this episode of No Brains No Headache Podcast the guys hit the road yet again to do a live recording for the fine patrons of Stadium Sports Bar. The Saturday afternoon was full of Cleary's Comments, the segment where random things are bantered about. The topics were all over the board starting off with Matt suggesting the podcast steals credit for several modern inventions and the new and improved John Daly Challenge is revealed for those brave enough to try such a feat. At one point Matt said “weed wackers are awesome”. Finish up with “Would You Rather” featuring Uncle Pete and breakdown the details of federal student loans before asking an important question regarding the FBI's Most Wanted List: How old is too old? Born and raised in South Orange, NJ - in the shadow of NYC - Merilee Kuchon’s early life was very suburban and urban. Merilee was about five or six when she had her first desert experience. Aunt Franny and Uncle Pete, who lived in Encinitas, put Merilee in the VW Bus and drove down to Anza Borrego. Merilee says, “It blew my mind.” In 2004 Merilee was working at High Times Magazine in NYC. Though the job had some perks, Merilee was tired of sitting behind a desk. Having experienced 9/11 up close and personal, she realized that experience had not only changed NYC, but also changed her. Merilee convinced her then boyfriend to quit his job and go with her on a year long road trip of the Southwest and Mexico. Before heading out on that trip, a former punk-rock friend from Jersey wrote Merilee, inviting her to come visit him in Joshua Tree while she was traveling. Merilee stayed in JT for about a month – back and forth to Mexico, playing music, eating and playing poker. She made her way back to NJ, continuing to make trips back out to Joshua Tree in the four years that followed. While back in NJ she met her love, Doug. They lived in Texas for five years, playing in a band and operating a co-op deli before making the move to Joshua Tree. Life in Austin was not fulfilling. In making the decision to move to Joshua Tree the first time, Merilee knew she needed to work and decided it would be cooking. Years earlier, while still working at High Times, Merilee went to French Culinary Institute on the weekends just for fun and to learn. After getting settled in Joshua Tree, Merilee put a 'private chef' resume up on craigslist and immediately got a response from a drug and alcohol rehab facility down the hill in Indian Wells. While in Texas, she had a job as a deli manager for a food co-op, adding management skills to her culinary training. This all worked together to help Merilee – and her business partner Rosa Ficara (Ep 128) - to open Roadrunner Grab + Go deli in Joshua Tree. In this episode Merilee shares the experience of applying for the deli space- adjacent to the Joshua Tree National Park Visitors Center - preparing to open, the menu, the staff and the good feeling of being able to employ local folks. Welcome back friends. Let's talk about why today's going to be a bit challenging.
On the show this week, Thursday, 10 September, we welcome founder of CIS Greg Lindsay AO. From a backyard shed in Pennant Hills to shop-top above Uncle Pete's Toys in St Leonards and now Macquarie Street in Sydney's CBD, Greg built the CIS from a one-man operation into the self-sustaining institute it is today. His goal throughout was to "make the philosophic foundations of a free society once more a living intellectual issue," as Friedrich Hayek said we must. Join us live, to hear Greg's story and ask your own questions about how he turned a timeless idea into one of Australia's leading think tanks.

Maine, the way life should be, Vacationland, it's a special place in New England. Uncle Pete Tranchemontagne calls Sanford Maine his home. He's been a caregiver in the medical cannabis space in his home state for as long as they existed. He helped change a law that banned weed smokers from receiving organs from donors, His organs were ready to be harvested when he fell into a coma for 4 months in 1986, lost a little liver, a part of his pancreas, but he survived that. Until a relapse of that internal chemical explosion caused a staph infection, and then...he fell off a forklift while working and broke his neck and spine. He's a miracle man, giving his knowledge of the cannabis he grows and sells legally out of his house with his family at Uncle Pete's Re-Leaf. This is special In The Weeds with Jimmy Young and a Maine legend Uncle Pete Tranchemontagne.

Sextimony Chapter 2: The Discovery of Sexual Orientation Part 1 I'm excited to be Interview transgender veteran Dr. Elijah Nicholas as he promotes his new children's book "Madoodle," a Children & Family fiction series that tells the story of a ten-year-old girl whose Uncle Pete was once her Auntie Mary. Based on Dr. Elijah's personal experiences with family and friends as he navigated his gender transition from female to male, Dr. Elijah has brilliantly created a story of love, family, compassion, and an authentic gender expression acceptance. Assigned the female gender at birth, Dr. Elijah Nicholas spent over half of his life in the US Military retiring as a senior officer in 2012. Transitioning from female-to-male in 2018 came as a result of Dr. Elijah no longer being able to live his core values: Authenticity, Integrity, and Transparency. After retiring from the military and then leading ministers and pastors around the globe, Dr. Elijah decided to become an author and do his due diligence with the injustice surrounding the LGBTQI community. His memoir, "Didn't Ask, Didn't Tell: The Life of A Gay Christian Soldier" chronicles Dr. Elijah's life as a girl who experienced sexual trauma, growing up in the African-American community where secrets were often the norm, and then living life as a lesbian for almost 25 years before retiring from the US Military. While Dr. Elijah was extremely pleased and freed by the self-publication of his memoir, he continued to live with a deeply rooted secret. Ultimately, he could no longer navigate life living as a female as he continued to expand his consciousness. Subsequently, transitioning to Elijah Nicholas Meredith in 2018 was the saving grace for Dr. Elijah, literally. Transitioning and living life openly and authentically saved Dr. Elijah's life. Dr. Elijah holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Masters in Business Administration, a Masters in Adult Education & Training, a Masters in Military Operational Art & Leadership, and a Bachelors of Science in Administration of Justice. A former pastor, Dr. Elijah is also a licensed and ordained minister, leading Dr. Elijah Nicholas Ministries. He resides in Atlanta with his two amazing Boxers; Duke & Zeus. Do you have a Sextimony? It’s not just the Premier League that’s returning next week but also the Premier League narrative. Mikel Arteta is preparing to return to The Etihad to face old boss Pep Guardiola and we are all EXCITED. West Ham are getting ready too, with a massive mosaic. To whom will this mammoth task fall? Is it not vulnerable to mischief making? So many questions need answering. Leagues One and Two have voted to end their season so we have lots to say about that, while also taking in a surprise visit from Shaquille O’Neal and having a lovely chat about Sir Les Ferdinand flirting with Juventus on football’s new dating app. We also have an open top plane update from a listener and Uncle Pete tells us about his camera roll, memories of a particular sideboard and the Dōtonbori river’s sinister Curse of the Colonel.Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@footballrambledaily.com ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Jimmy Guidry is well-known throughout Acadiana for his iconic restaurant, Hub City Diner, which features affordable and delicious comfort foods such as hamburger steak, chicken tenders with Curly Q's, omelets and all sorts of classic American diner food that pleases any palate, young or old. In this episode of Discover Lafayette, Jimmy sat down with Jan Swift and discussed his journey in the hospitality business, which began when he was ten years old and his mother bought a Dairy Queen in Opelousas. As the youngest child, his job was to pick up the trash as he rode his bike to school each morning. By the time he was twelve, he was handling money; by fourteen, he was grinding beef and helping cook menu items from scratch. As a teen, he realized how much he enjoyed helping others and working with people. A graduate of USL (now UL - Lafayette) in Marketing, Jimmy bartended for a couple of years and got his start at Uncle Pete's where he befriended another well-known restauranteur, Charlie Goodson, who has remained one of his best friends. After waiting tables at Beef & Ale, Jimmy opened the Brass Rail in 1973. He quickly opened a second bar, Mother's Mantle, which provided live entertainment six nights a week, plus Friday afternoons. The second locations of Brass Rail and Mother's Mantle were opened in Baton Rouge, and Antler's Restaurant in downtown Lafayette was then purchased and updated. Incredibly, yet another establishment followed, Boo Boo's Nightclub on the Breaux Bridge Highway, which was an 800 seat honky-tonk open on Friday and Saturday nights and featured T. K. Hulin and Johnny Allen. Mother's Mantle was owned by Jimmy Guidry, along with The Brass Rail, Boo Boo's Nightclub, and Antler's Restaurant. Back in those early days of his career, there were no opening and closing ordinances governing times of operation. So Jimmy joking stated, "We were the first to open, around 9 a.m., and the last to close, whenever the last person walked out, which could be 4 a.m. He kept a regimented schedule, rising at 10 a.m. to get to work, taking a break at 2 p.m. to work out, napping, and then getting up at 8 p.m. to get back to work. By 1981, Jimmy realized he didn't need to be in the bar business anymore and sold his interest in all endeavors. He joined Cuco's Mexican Restaurant's management team and had a fifteen-year run, first as a general manager, and then regional manager. He loved his job and attributes his experience with Cuco's and his wonderful boss as providing an outstanding training ground for learning systemized procedures for purchasing of food and equipment, leasing, and management. He was eventually ready to take on ownership of his own restaurant. In 1998, Jimmy was dining with Charlie Goodson and asked if anything in the Lafayette area was available for sale. Charlie had been an early partner in Hub City Diner with chef Pat Mould and George Graham and knew that George may be willing to sell his interest as he had been the sole owner for several years. The sale was consummated and Jimmy Guidry has been the owner of Hub City Diner since 1998. Hub City Diner is a staple for so many demographics in the community. Regular customers fall into several categories and some show up every day: entrepreneurs show up around 7 a.m. with their Wall Street Journal and study the day's news; around 8 a.m., the casual guys come in and have meetings with friends and colleagues; at 9 a.m., another group comes in for breakfast. Around 10 a.m., a group of people show up who eat two meals a day and have their first meal at the diner. It all begins again at noon, and so on. "Over the years, we've had people eat all their meals with us, seven days a week, two times per day. When we were closed for a holiday, we'd have their meals delivered." Jimmy attributes his continued success to his team, the employees who make it all happen. "You're only as good as your people." He has low employee turnover,

You may not think it, but teenagers are actually pretty easy to impress, at least for Uncle Pete. This week, Pete continues to prove his consummate maturity, and Dane's got some trouble with cancel culture. The guys have trouble with the current crop of newly famous internet celebs before complaining about social media like the old guys they are. Elsewhere, boomers are such an easy target for ridicule they barely need prompting to get stupid, Finally, the highest fashion of the denim on denim look is explored before the guys talk about getting weird.

It's Uncle Pete's funeral today, so he puts on his good brown suit with the brass buttons, and we all set out for the cemetery before the sun is up, because we don't want to get too hot in our good clothes on our way there. Uncle Pete and Pa walk in front, me and Ma follow. When we get there, Uncle Pete's grave is waiting, shallow and open, and the plaque has already been engraved with his name. One of our favourite episodes of the season so far we discuss it all in our Luke Cage Season 2 Episode 9 Review as we talk about our top five points of "For Pete's Sake" the ninth episode of season 2 of the Marvel Netflix show Luke Cage in our Spoiler filled podcast. As always make sure you've watched the episode before listening to our podcast. Luke Cage Season 209 Review "For Pete's Sake" Spoiler filled Synopsis Directed by Clark Johnson Written by Matt Owens and Ian Stokes Misty Knight (Simone Missick), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), Tilda (Gabrielle Dennis)and James Lucas (Reg E. Cathey) lose their tail and with the (off screen) help of Danny Rand hunker down in a Rand Enterprises research facility. However, tensions rise as Luke and Misty butt heads over how to handle Mariah and ultimately Misty agrees to offer Black Mariah immunity in exchange for evidence against Bushmaster (Mustafa Shakir). Meanwhile, long-buried family secrets come to light as Luke tells Tilda that her mom murdered their cousin Cornell Stokes. As Tilda confronts Mariah demanding the truth, she gets the whole truth. Mariah admits to his murder but also explains a devastating truth behind the murder, Tilda’s birth, their Uncle Pete and ultimately why Mariah doesn't love her daughter. In contrast Luke begins to reconcile with his father just as Bushmaster turns up at the Rand Facility following a tip-off from Detective Nandi (Antonique Smith). Alan Alda has been a household name for decades. He is a rare breed of celebrity -- down to earth, funny, kind and a deeply thoughtful human. He is an advocate for women's rights, a passionate devotee of science and an artist still fiercely committed to the craft of acting, writing and directing. On this episode of Little Known Facts, Alda shares very personal stories from his life. He discusses in heartbreaking detail growing up as the only child of a schizophrenic mother in a time when no one spoke of such things; he talks of his father who was a well known performer on the Burlesque circuit, someone who went on to international stardom only to go back to square one again and again. Alan Alda saw firsthand from an early age the great highs and lows of an acting career. Yet with the role of 'Hawkeye Pierce' on the groundbreaking, iconic hit television series M*A*S*H, Alda became a huge star He reinvents himself with every role and in his conversation with Ilana, he shares his process for creating a character and how to live in the moment. Listen as Alan share his insights on fame and how his passion for art, science, activism and family make him a deeply curious and mindful person. Alan Alda has earned international recognition as an actor, writer and director. In addition to The Aviator, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, Alda’s films include Crimes and Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I Love You, Flirting With Disaster, Manhattan Murder Mystery, And The Band Played On, Same Time, Next Year and California Suite, as well as The Seduction of Joe Tynan, which he wrote, and The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty, A New Life and Betsy’s Wedding, all of which he wrote and directed. Most recently, his film appearances have included Tower Heist, Wanderlust, and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. In 2016, he appeared as Uncle Pete in Louis CK’s groundbreaking web series Horace and Pete. He has the distinction of being nominated for an Oscar, a Tony, and an EMMY - and publishing a bestselling book - all in the same year (2005). In all, he has received 6 EMMYs and has been nominated for an EMMY 34 times. Alda played Hawkeye Pierce on the classic television series M*A*S*H, and wrote and directed many of the episodes. His EMMY nominations include performances in 2015 for The Blacklist, in 2009 for 30 Rock, in 2006 for West Wing (for which he received an EMMY), and in 1999 for ER.
