Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Craig Melvin. For Craig Melvin this book is more an investigation than a memoir. It's an opportunity to better understand his father; to interrogate his family's legacy of addiction and despair but also transformation and redemption; and to explore the challenges facing all dads--including Craig himself, a father of two young children. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Craig had a fraught relationship with his father. Lawrence Melvin was a distant, often absent parent due to his drinking as well as his job working the graveyard shift at a postal facility. Watching sports and tinkering on Lawrence's beloved (but unreliable) 1973 Pontiac LeMans were two ways father and son connected, but as Lawrence's drinking spiraled out of control, their bond was stretched to the breaking point. Fortunately, Craig had a loving, fiercely protective mother who held the family together. He also had a series of surrogate father figures in his life--uncles, teachers, workplace mentors--who by their examples helped him figure out the kind of person and father he wanted to be. Pops is the story of all these men--and of the inspiring fathers Craig has met reporting his "Dads Got This Series" on the Today show. Pops is also the story of Craig and Lawrence Melvin's long journey to reconciliation and understanding, and of how all these experiences and encounters have informed Craig's understanding of his own role as a dad. The plaintiff says she hired the defendant, her mom's cousin, to do some work on a trailer she was moving into. She claims he made a mess and even caused sewer damage. She's suing for her money back. The defendant says the trailer smelled of feces because there were sewage issues before he arrived. He refuses to offer a refund because he did complete the work. The plaintiff says he hired the defendant to do some work on his 1970 Pontiac LeMans and gave him a deposit, but then the man came back and said he wanted more money to do the job. The plaintiff told him to cancel the work, but now the defendant won't return the deposit, so he's suing him. The defendant says he was ready to do the work, but the plaintiff never brought him the parts and he stored the car for eight months. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is FORD V FERRARI, the historical drama directed by James Mangold, and written for the screen by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller. In the 1960s, Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) proposes to Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) that Ford should design a car to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a grueling race dominated year after year by the Ferrari company. After Ferrari rejects Ford’s offer to purchase their company, Lee reaches out to car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and an irascible driver named Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to defeat them on the track. No spoilers. America has a love/hate relationship with the automobile, carefully nurtured as a status symbol during the rise of the Ford Motor Company, then becoming a mainstay of rural and suburban life. Entire cities have been designed around the automobile, making their ownership, or at least their availability a necessity for many, and bringing pollution, rising gas prices, and gridlock traffic. Automobiles are tools like any other, but there is a subset of cars that make the transition from tools to toys, whether that’s the classic car clubs across the world, or the minor league racing circuit. FORD V FERRARI is a film about boys working on their toys, in this case, the incredible and innovative Ford GT40. Ford wasn’t the only company targeting Ferrari in that time period. At General Motors, John DeLorean was pushing the Pontiac LeMans and offering a GTO package, the first commercially available mainstream muscle car in the United States. In fact, the GTO signifier was inspired by the successful Ferrari 250 GTO. You can find out more about that particular car in FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN (Episode #648), along with a general look at the rise of the muscle car. Each character involved on the Ford team exemplifies the different types of boys and their toys. For Ford, played very arrogantly by Tracy Letts, this challenge was about pride in the once great Ford Motor Company, and after Ford fails to buy Ferrari, about wounded pride. For Iacocca, it’s about making a path for himself at Ford, and an episode in the often-contentious relationship with Ford II. For Shelby, the challenge is about the challenge itself, and his own wounded pride about failing to win at Le Mans before needing to retire. For Miles, it’s about the pride in being the best racer, and knowing cars better than anyone else. And for the supporting cast around them, it’s about dealing with all the emotions and fallout surrounding the entire journey, leaving metaphorical and literal wreckage in its wake. FORD V FERRARI borrows a great deal from classic racing movies. We’re introduced to the characters early on, laying the groundwork for each character, and for the corporate intrigue surrounding Ford’s attempt to buy his way into racing. Once the conflicts are established, not just between Ford and Ferrari, but also internally on the Ford team, we begin the journey to Le Mans ’66. The writing team plays a little fast and loose with the actual history, all crafted to make sure the viewer is firmly on the Ford side, and within the Ford team, firmly on the side of Shelby and Miles. Ferrari is made out to be arrogant enough to want to see them fail. The road to Le Mans 66 shows us not just the development of the Ford GT40, but also the development of the two lead characters. We learn a lot about Shelby and Miles, and their relationships outside of their obsession with cars. We also get a sneak peak into the absolutely ridiculous and childish corporate politics that get played, especially by boys playing with their toys, whether that’s a car, a division, a career, or an entire corporation. We want the team to win, even if it seems composed entirely of assholes. Even Shelby and Miles, played as good old boys from a forgotten era, can be assholes from time to time, which is contextually accurate, but also feels incredibly privileged, especially with how petty many characters act when that much money is at stake for what is ultimately a frivolous honor. Now, I may not like the characters in this film, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t played well. Christian Bale absolutely deserves the nomination for Best Actor in a Drama, turning in a full and consistent character performance from start to finish. He’s almost a perfect asshole at times, sometimes justifiably so, sometimes aggravatingly not. Damon’s portrayal of Shelby feels much smaller next to Bale’s performance, which is also reminiscent of the relationship between Shelby and Miles at the time. The supporting cast is above average, working to support either the team’s efforts or the individuals on the team. Miles’ relationship to his spouse Mollie (Caitriona Balfe) and his son Peter (Noah Jupe) provide a nice break from, or at least a reduction of, the testosterone of the other scenes. I do have some criticisms for the overall film. The film clocks in at two and a half hours, roughly cut up as a half-hour introduction, an hour to make it to Le Mans, about thirty minutes at Le Mans, and closing up afterwards. The film does a great job of managing the focus of Ford vs Ferrari, but doesn’t manage the character’s stories nearly as well. Aside from Miles, and maybe Shelby, every other character has very little development, either acting as a force of nature in Ford and Iacocca, or acting in reaction to Shelby and Miles. I feel like at least thirty minutes could be cut from the film, although I’m not entirely sure where. Taking out the extra scenes involving Miles would lessen Bale’s performance, and with Shelby narrating portions of the film, it’s hard to know where else to cut. While I was never bored by the film, I did get impatient waiting to get to the racing, then wondered how much was left at the end. FORD V FERRARI is an extensive look at the journey to Ford’s victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, focused on the rivalry between Ford and Ferrari, but also on the car that won the race, and the people who took that car to victory. Bale turns in an excellent performance, buoyed perhaps by scenes which might have pumped the brakes a little too much along the way. Muscle car and racing fans, or fans of films about cars, will definitely enjoy this film. Just allocate enough time to properly enjoy it. Rotten Tomatoes: 92% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 81 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 FORD V FERRARI (2019) is rated PG-13 and is currently playing in theaters.

(07-11-2019) - Randy visits a "Hollywood Show" at the LA Airport and catches up with former original Lost in Space actors, Billy Mumy and Angela Cartwright who played "Will Robinson" and "Penny Robinson". Billy gives Randy the lowdown on his love of European cars, and mentions how he and Angela were very close after the show ended. Billy feels Angela has selected amnesia about a certain incident in his dad's old '68 Pontiac LeMans.
Randy Elber is the owner of R&R Auto Restoration in Mount Kisco, New York, where their mantra is “Preservation, Restoration, Service." There he and his business partner, Robert Torre, work on a variety of exotic marques including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Mercedes, and Aston Martin. Randy’s love of cars began when he was 13 and purchased a Pontiac LeMans that he restored into a GTO clone just shy of his 17th birthday. Randy majored in Automotive Restoration at McPherson College in Kansas and earned scholarships from Mercedes Benz and Hagerty Insurance. After graduating with honors, he was hired at Paul Russell & Company where he further honed his craft. A chance meeting over a Mercedes 300SL Roadster brought Randy together with his future business partner, Robert, and today they are preserving a 1955 Mercedes Gullwing that they found that had been sitting since 1974.
The 1983 Daytona 500, the 25th running of the event, was held February 20. The lead changed 58 times among 11 drivers. A total of six cautions were handed out by NASCAR officials for a duration of 36 laps. Cale Yarborough was the first driver to run a qualifying lap of more than 200 miles per hour at the 1983 Daytona 500 in his #28 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. However, on his second of two qualifying laps, Yarborough crashed and flipped his car in turn four. Despite the crash, Yarborough drove a backup car (a Pontiac LeMans) in second-round qualifying and made the field. On the final lap, Baker led Yarborough, Ruttman, and Elliott. Cale stormed past Baker on the backstretch and Ruttman drafted into second; Baker dove under Ruttman and Elliott snookered them both on the high side in a three-abreast photo finish for second. The win was Cale's third in the 500 and was also the first time that an in-car camera of a car went into victory lane before a national CBS Sports audience (this tradition would eventually continue into the present day).

Based on a true story, The French Connection includes a history, 5-minute car chase that pits a basic 1971 Pontiac Lemans sedan against an L-Train! James and Sid talk about New York City's abusive relationship with cars and how the muscle car age was an inconvenience to them. Were the cars in the true story more interesting than the movie? Why were the sedans so awful compared to the coupes? And how about that chase? How much danger were people really in due to the reckless actions of director William Friedkin? Enjoy Reels and Wheels! Welcome Inside The Yellow Studio. It's yellow because it's yellow. Duh. Truth is, I love yellow, orange, red and hunter green. Those are among my favorite colors. I don't have just one. A 15-year-old version of me and the pickup When I was 15 - yes, people, when I was young, living in Louisiana...you could get your driver's license at 15 - I had a 1954 GMC pickup truck. It was an old truck some farmer had abandoned in a field. My maternal grandfather bought it for $150 and got it running, then paid somebody a little bit to recover the seat in new vinyl. It was a "3-on-the-tree" transmission and I drove it back from Oklahoma, where my grandparents lived, all the way back to Louisiana. No air conditioning. No radio. Bare bones classic truck in faded hunter green. I loved it. So much that when I got it home a buddy and I painted it hunter green with orange fender flares. With a brush! And it looked good. Of course, it looked better if you were standing a few feet away. ;) During high school I had great fun with that truck. My first "real" car was a Pontiac Lemans. It was "Sundance Orange" - that's what GM called it. So orange was always a big player for me. So, why not The Orange Studio? I never considered walls being orange. Frankly, it just seemed too dark and I wanted something lighter. I had a moment of clarity when the TV show HOUSE aired. His boss, Cuddy, had yellow walls in her office. Mustard yellow. The moment I saw Cuddy's office I told my wife, "That's the color I want to paint the walls." She and Dena, a close friend, painted it after finding the right shade of yellow. So that's how the name came to be. Cuddy's office walls inspired The Yellow Studio Here are some details about the actual physical space: - It's a room about 13' x 14.5'. - There's an adjoining bathroom. - It has a small closet, filled with too many cables and other audio paraphernalia. - It has 2 large windows with wooden slat shutters on the inside. - It has an overhead florescent light, which rarely gets turned on. - I have a 19" Chinese lantern with an LED bulb inside that hangs overhead and serves as a poor man's video light. - There are 4 full height bookcases behind my desk (out of seen most of the time) filled with books. - There are 3 other 5' high bookcases in the studio, also filled with books. - There is one 4' high bookcase filled with books, and a Polk Audio HD clock radio, plus a 3 monkeys lamp (hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil). - There is a CD carousel in the corner that houses 2000 CD's with more stashed here and there. - There's one Hon 2-drawer lowboy filing cabinet (lateral files or regular - it can configured either way). - There's 3 chairs that can sit around the "broadcast table" which is actually a conference table. - The floor is carpeted with a light green low plush carpet. - The ceiling has popcorn texture circa 1980's (yeah, I hate it but it's a royal pain and major mess to change it). - The room has one HVAC vent without a vent fixture to prevent any rattling. Air just drops into the room. Here's a list of the cool stuff (these are not affiliate links; I do have an affiliate list for most of my resources here): • Herman Miller Mirra chair • Apple iMac 27" with i7 processor (16GB RAM / 1TB Hard Drive) • Apple iPad Air (128GB with ATT capability) • Ambrosia Wiretap Studio ($69 - I love it, but it doesn't work on the latest Mac OS and you can't get support, so do not buy it) • Audio Hijack Pro by Rogue Amoeba • Twisted Wave (my DAW of choice) • Dialog by Wave Arts (my audio plugin of choice) • Ambrosia Soundboard (sound cart software; this is $49) • Sound Byte by Black Cat Systems (my main sound cart software; the interface isn't as pretty as Soundboard, but I still rely on it more) • ID3 Editor (to create ID tags) • Transmit by Panic is my ftp program of choice • Call Recorder by ECamm (the software I use to record Skype ca...
If you are a person of a certain age, you probably remember the moment when you were first seized by Karen Carpenter's voice. For me, it was getting into my mother's Pontiac LeMans after a commencement ceremony at Kingswood School in 1970. I was a sophomore at an all-boys school, and nobody wanted to be "Close To" me.
