Did Jeep accidentally build one of the best hot hatches of the last 40 years? It's is smaller than a Mk8 GTI and could be had with a bulletproof 4.0L inline-six and 5-speed transmission. Can it possibly give the quintessential VW hot-hatch a run for its money? We'll talk Jeep XJ Cherokee, its origins, and all 8 generations of GTI – from the 16v 2.0L, to the 8v 2-point-slow, the soulless 1.8T, the venerable VR6, and the electric e-Golf! === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === Welcome to the hot hatch episode! We'll touch on some real oddballs in this one – like the Dodge Omni GLHS, Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Sprint, and Mitsubishi Mirage. Plus some allegedly fabulous but forbidden fruit: the Peugeot 205 GTi Rally and Renault Clio Williams. Then we'll dive into the Jeep XJ Cherokee which Jason just did a Revelations episode on. It began as the unibody successor to the giant and inefficient Jeep Wagoneer – a honking SUV with CJ Wrangler guts inside – which, incidentally, was a recipe being emulating across the globe as Toyota and Land Rover (to name a few) were also building more comfortable and luxurious SUVs using drivetrain bits from their more serious off-roaders like the BJ/FJ and Series II/III. The Cherokee followed the Range Rover away from the body-on-frame chassis and adopted unitary construction methods resulting in genuine handling prowess – even out-gripping a W201 Mercedes-Benz 190E. In fact, the chassis bones are so good you can find XJs competing amongst much sportier cars in 24 Hours of Lemons races across the country. Jason even deems the XJ one of his best back road drives ever. Sadly, early cars were excruciatingly slow thanks to an anemic Renault-built AMC engine. But that didn't stop Jason from getting one of his very first speeding tickets in one. The little XJ made a lasting impression on nearly everyone who had the pleasure of experiencing one – including Derek, whose experiences in his mom's are literally his earliest datable memories. The little Jeep was so popular that when the Grand Cherokee came along to replace it, so many people were still clamoring for the original Cherokee that Jeep decided they would just build both. After the Jeep, we jump into VW's perennial hatchback hit: the GTI. All 8 generations have their pros and cons: Jason proclaims the VR6 to be one of the best sounding engines ever produced, and the 1.8T the worst VW ever made. The MQB platform underpinning the latest cars is declared spectacular. The Mk4 is a chubby baby Audi/Mercedes. The Mk6 fixes a lot of the hamster-styling of the Mk5, but the Mk5 has the better steering, just beware understeer. The Mk7 is a delight, especially if you can find yourself a Rabbit or Sport edition in Great Falls Green or Cornflower Blue. But even with a fancy color scheme, the humble e-Golf makes the better city car. Of note: Derek finally goes large-barging with a crew made up of a 560SEC, F-Type SVR, F-Pace SVR, a pair of R129s (one dogleg), and A4 2.8 Avant 5-speed, with his Mk5 GTI track car as a palette cleanser. Lastly, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers and Leslie Nielsen are national treasures, and their comedy blockbusters from the 80s, 90s and 2000s are exquisite. But do they hold up as well today as a Jeep XJ? It's a great Thursday to be on a car lot as we talk about Kia's plan for a send-off of the Rio. We also talk about EV's effects on road conditions, as well as consumer preferences when it comes to product placement. Show Notes with links:One of the least expensive new cars on the market, the Kia Rio, is set to be discontinued after the 2023 model year.Rio's sales in 2022 were 26,996, marking a 14% drop, and as of July this year, sales have decreased by another 5%.Kia's Monterrey, Mexico plant, where the Rio is manufactured, is set to be retooled for the production of two small electric vehicles.Light trucks, encompassing minivans, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups, made up 79% of all new U.S. vehicle sales in the first half of 2023.Five Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Amidst the rapid adoption of EVs, a recent UK study raises concerns about their potential impact on road health. Researchers suggest that the added weight of BEVs, especially larger models, could lead to more rapid road wear and increased potholes, challenging existing infrastructure and sparking debates on vehicle taxationU.K. newspaper, the Telegraph, with data from the University of Leeds, reported that BEVs cause up to 2.32 times more wear on roads than ICE vehicles, especially those weighing over 4409 On average, BEVs are heavier by about 687 lbs more due to their batteries. The “fourth power formula” suggests that doubling a vehicle's axle weight can cause 16 times more road damage. As BEVs don't contribute to gas taxes, discussions arise about taxing vehicles based on weight or battery weight. Norway already taxes vehicles at a rate based on their weight.Apart from main roads, residential roads, driveways, garage floors, and public parking garages may also suffer damage from heavier BEVs. The debate on BEV infrastructure needs to consider these aspects in addition to charger availability.A BENlabs survey reveals 52% of U.S. consumers favor TV shows with product placements over traditional ads. This shift comes as ad-free streaming rises and traditional TV ads lose traction.66% of North American viewers ignore TV ads; many divert their attention during commercials; 39% believe TV ads lack relevance and value; 31% find them repetitive.Top brands in movie placements include Apple, Coca-Cola, and Nike; for TV, Apple, Nike, and Dell lead.Neil Saunders, Managing Director at Globaldata, noted, “Companies like Amazon properly monetize it on their Prime Video service with the X-ray feature which suggests products based on what characters are wearing, etc.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Tuesday is coming in hot as we talk about the very present reality of used car leasing. We also talk about the last remaining sub-$20k vehicle as well as the end of a Netflix customer experience that paved the way for streaming as we know it. Show Notes with links:Used car leasing has always been an interesting idea, but carried too many risks. It's hard enough to predict the residual value of a new vehicle, alone a 4-5 year old vehicle. But predictive analytics combined with today's wild market is helping used car leasing gain traction.Used car leasing has the opportunity to protect a lender's risk profile and support a customer in a time where affordability is a major consumer concern.Rusty West, CEO of MarketScan, believes used-car leasing can alleviate the burden of consumers taking large, high-interest loans.“If we continue to shove customers into 84-month and 96-month auto contracts, then we are going to create a difficult environment,” West says. “We must get back to what's good for the whole automotive ecosystem. Focus on getting back to a healthy transaction.”“Used-car leasing remains in the minority, but it is gaining traction. We think we figured it out. Now it's a question of getting the word out.” - Mark Chandler, Credit Union Leasing of America. As the US auto market evolves, the once common sub-$20,000 new car is nearing extinction. While SUVs and trucks dominate American choices, the compact Mitsubishi Mirage holds the title as the last car below this price point. The Mirage is the last new vehicle priced under $20,000, but Mitsubishi will be discontinuing the model over the next few yearsFive Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Remember when Netflix was just a DVD mailing service? Well, as that part of its business ends, the entertainment giant is giving a little extra love to that customer base and will send subscribers up to 10 DVDs of their choice. The final mailing will be on September 29th and current DVD subscribers can choose up to 10 extra titles to be included. Normally, customers are allowed only 8 discs.Since shipping DVDs began in March of 1998, Netflix says it has mailed out more than 5 billion discs to more than 40 million customers.Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that running the business had become increasingly difficult as the number of customers who still rented physical movies continues to shrink. “Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming,” he said. Those discs will still have to be returned apparently, with returns accepted until October 27, 2023.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Cox Automotive found the Mitsubishi Mirage was the only new model going for less than $20,000 last month. A middle-of-the-road new car cost over $48,000 in July, up 30% since 2019. And used cars were no better. The average July price was $27,000, also a 30% hike from 2019. We spend the first half of the show talking about what we spent on our cars and how feasible it is to budget for cars that cost this much. Then we recombobulate with Dan Shafer ahead of tomorrow's Republican debate. Things he is looking for when he attends the debate? How will candidates talk about Milwaukee and Wisconsin? How will Milwaukee react to the spectacle and the spotlight? Can DeSantis turn it around? Will this be the moment for any other candidates break through? The Trump of it all. Guest: Dan Shafer

The remains of 114 people have been found, most of them yet to be identified. Hawaii Gov. Entry-level means different things to different people. For some, an entry-level new vehicle is like Ford's Maverick or the Mitsubishi Mirage: affordable, reasonable and, generally, plentiful. Though every model from every automaker has an entry point, and some of those or better equipped than others. For the top Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, it's the S500: a six-cylinder powered sedan that's a great platform for the folks at Maybach to work their magic. Well, even the lowly S500 doesn't skimp on comfort or luxury. Powered by the aforementioned six-cylinder, which displaces 3.0-liters while generating 429 hp. That power travels through a nine-speed automatic before hitting the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. While the base S500 doesn't sport the wild hyper screen, the Mercedes S-Class interior is more than posh enough to keep your in-laws happy. In this episode of Quick Spin, Wesley Wren puts the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S500 through its paces. Wren walks you around the S500 while showing off some of its features, and highlights its interior. After that, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Between those segments, Mark Vaughn joins to share his experience with the latest S-Class, and chat with Wren. Vaughn and Wren discuss some of their favorite and least favorite, parts of the S500. The two also give the lay of the land for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class lineup. Closing the show, the two explain what makes this S500 special.

The engines of crypto run at high RPMS and churn out a lot of torque. But the race we're in has multiple classes of cars in it. Some, like Bitcoin are the high end prototype cars, others like Enjin or Cosmos are exotics. Stablecoins….they're more like a Mitsubishi Mirage. Stablecoins are boring to us degens, but vitally important to the entire crypto ecosystem. But don't be fooled, the tech behind Stablecoins is no slouch and the future of stablecoins will determine how much freedom the world will have in the coming years. The race to be the #1 stablecoin is intense and a new driver is coming on to the scene that is right now downshifting, and attempting to pass the current leader, Tether, on the inside.
