Photographer Daniel Arnold joined me at the 2025 Chico Review. We discussed how photography became a compulsion and a means of connection, transforming his life and leading him to leave his writing job at Nickelodeon. Additionally, we talk about Daniel's approach to assignment work and how his photo addiction has evolved over the years. https://www.secondname.agency/photographers/daniel-arnold/portfolio_/ ||| https://www.instagram.com/arnold_daniel This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photo-book library today at: https://charcoalbookclub.com ||| https://www.chicoreview.com Daniel Arnold's work is deeply human, with a sense of intrigue and humor that breathes fresh air into an age of extreme curation and editing. With a dynamic and versatile voice, he has covered everything from home births to high fashion, from the Met Gala to the 2016 campaign trail and multiple inaugurations. Arnold began his career documenting the streets of New York City with an innate curiosity and a wry smile that quickly gained him a cult following and frequent collaborations with the New York Times and Vogue. In 2022, he was profiled by the New Yorker in conjunction with the release of "Pickpocket," a collaborative monograph compiled by the Safdie Brothers' Elara Press. His odd, enduring photos can also be found in art galleries around the world. Arnold is based in New York.
For our "Two Shot" episode featuring New York City movies, Emilio, Julian and Madeline welcome on Mariquita Reese, fellow cinephile and cohost of Post Film Clarity, to talk two recent NYC based films about late night desperation that sends characters racing around the boroughs - the Safdie Brothers' 'Good Time' from 2017 and Sean Baker's 'Anora' from 2024, the current Best Picture winner. The group discusses the depths of Connie's ineptitude and audacity, the ugly truths that the Safdies wanted to keep in the film, the shifting nature of power in both these films, compelling casting choices, why these bummer endings are actually pretty good, Mikey Madison's mastery of insulting with a Brooklyn accent, the going rate these days for a farm in Virginia, how DVD commentaries can redeem a bad movie, why Dick York is the superior Darrin, and much, much more! Episode 49 - This week, we unravel the chaos of Uncut Gems! Tune in as we explore Adam Sandler's gripping performance, the Safdie Brothers' masterful storytelling, and what makes this film a nonstop thrill ride from start to finish!
Hey everybody! This week, we are discussing the Safdie Brothers stress-filled, fever dream, Good Time. Listen as we breakdown this anxiety fueled crime drama about what it takes to finally understand that your actions can do much more harm than good and to finally let go. Enjoy!
We did it! In the 200th episode of the show we gathered together with a panel of all-star co-hosts to talk about the namesake of the show, the Safdie Brothers' Uncut Gems. In this show we reminisce for a little while about our journey with this podcast, reveal some of our plans for the future and also, naturally, talk about the movie. We talk about Adam Sandler in "serious" movies, how the film's frenetic style makes Uncut Gems and experience, how difficult it is to keep Sandler and Kevin Garnett in the frame together, and how this is the remake of The Gambler the world deserved. We also talk about Howard keeping a change of clothes in his car in case he ends up locked in the trunk naked, Lakeith Stanfield in his glow-in-the-dark hoodie as a visual standout and how it is definitely a red flag when your girlfriend gets your name tattooed on her ass as a surprise. Tune in and enjoy this momentous occasion with us! “This is how I win.” Uncut Gems is an Adam Sandler dramatic-turn masterpiece of anxiety from the Safdie Brothers and A24. The film, about a New York diamond merchant and gambling addict, absolutely drips with stress from the cosmos all the way into the protagonist's colon. Clint, Cal and Alex talk about how Kevin Garnett could've been an Oscar contender, the use of the steadicam to create chaos, whether or not this rock is actually magic and where the film ranks on the all-time f-bomb list. Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm is at the pawn shop again, but he only needs two more boards out of KG and we got this. CineFix Top 100 was created by Clint Gage and Dan Parkhurst and is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Our Executive Producers are Clint Gage and Corrado Caretto. Logo and graphic design by Eric Sapp and title animations by Casey Redmon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There are two types of Adam Sandler fans: those who love raunchy, dumb, slapdash, quick-turnaround, cash-grab, overlit junk - like Hubie Halloween, Ridiculous 6, Jack & Jill, and Little Nicky, and those who enjoy brilliant acting, thoughtful screenplays, and artful direction - as seen in The Meyerowitz Stories, Hustle, and Punch Drunk Love. MG is in the latter camp, but even we were unprepared for the insane intensity, crazy filmmaking, and the tour-de-force central performance of the film we're taking on tonight: Uncut Gems!
This week on Truth & Movies we're cracking open new indie horror Hatching and pairing it up in film club with Mamoru Oshii's entirely unique animation Angel's Egg. Joining our host Leila Latif this week are Little White Lies editor David Jenkins and freelance writer (and former Truth & Movies host!) Michael Leader. The dream of the 90s (or early 2000s?) is dead in Funny Pages. That's right, we're discussing the feature directorial debut of Owen Kline, son of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates. Co-produced by the Safdie Brothers, Funny Pages is a grimy dark comedy from A24 starring Daniel Zolghadri (Eighth Grade) as a teenage cartoonist who ditches his boring suburban life to try and make it on his own in the city. We open the show with a quick rundown of how you, the listeners, chose Funny Pages as our review this week over Rings of Power, and we think that's pretty funny (in a good way).
