Sean is joined by his mate Mark to discuss one of Mark's favourite films: The Guns of Navarone (1961); One of the best adventure films ever made. It gets very philosophical. Discussion Points: -Mark was also introduced to older films by his Dad. -The strength of every single character. -Mark was impressed by the set-up of the film. -The brilliant scene with the exhausted, battered Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command pilots. -The lack of vilification for those making the difficult, near-impossible decisions in wartime. -The challenge of having morals in war. -The Oscar-winning special effects and how well they hold up. -The personal conflict between the characters, particularly Mallory and Franklin. -Sean's terrible note-taking returns (because he enjoys the film so much). -The myth of the 'clean' Wehrmacht. -The sheer insanity of war and the sheer insanity of trying to apply rules to it. -The iconic traitor scene. -Dispensing with airs and graces in wartime. -Sean prefers matte paintings to terrible CGI. -The best lift scene in cinema. -Surprising Wallace and Gromit trivia. -The bittersweet climax of the film. Raised Questions: -Does your Dad influence your taste in films? -What happened to writing in films? -Why did they 'bin off' the first Director? -Why Stanley Baker took such a small part? -Did you know they cast a pop singer? -Can you win the war but lose yourself in the process? -Can the whole machine function with a faulty piece? -What is one of the most over-used sounds in film history? -Who stepped on the Birthday Cake? -Did you know 'rat' incendiaries were actually used in the Second World War? -Why don't they make films like this anymore? Mark's Recommendations: -Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022). -Pork Chop Hill (1959). Shout-outs: -The Decision Reel podcast. Thanks for Listening! Review It Yourself is now on YouTube! This episode of Big Blend Radio’s “Military Monday” Show, which airs every first Monday of the month, features Mike Guardia, a US Army Veteran, and awarding-winning military historian and author. On this episode Mike discusses the life and military career of Lt. General Hal Moore and the General Hal Moore Military Museum in Bardstown, Kentucky. Dedicated to Bardstown native Lt. General Hal Moore, U.S. Army, a Vietnam and Korean War Hero, exhibits in this Museum cover conflicts from the American Revolution to the Mid-East battles of today, and are centered on the contributions of the many Kentuckians who served.Hal Moore is one of the most admired American combat leaders of the last fifty years, and initially became known to the public for being portrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie “We Were Soldiers.” A 1945 graduate of West Point, Moore's first combats occurred during the Korean War, where he fought in the battles of Old Baldy, T-Bone, and Pork Chop Hill. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, Moore commanded the 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry in the first full-fledged battle between U.S. and North Vietnamese regulars. Drastically outnumbered and nearly overrun, Moore led from the front, and though losing seventy-nine soldiers, accounted for 1,200 of the enemy before the Communists withdrew. This Battle of Ia Drang pioneered the use of "air mobile infantry"-delivering troops into battle via helicopter-which became the staple of U.S. operations for the remainder of the war. Mike Guardia is an award-winning author of numerous books including “Hal Moore: A Soldier Once…and Always,” “Hal Moore on Leadership: Winning When Outgunned and Outmanned,” and ” Hal Moore: A Life in Pictures.” More: https://mikeguardia.com/Featured music is “Colors of the USA” by Doreen Taylor. https://www.doreentaylormusic.com/

This week I talk about one of the very few Hollywood war movies to take place during The Korean War. One of my favoruites, which includes an all-star cast and a very interesting history behind it.
Jeff and Dave discuss the American Korean War Film Pork Chop Hill directed by Lewis Milestone. The film focuses on the trench warfare in the later Korean War and gives Jeff a good backdrop to discuss that phase of the war.
STORMELD (Pork Chop Hill 1959, regi Lewis Milestone) SPARTACUS (Spartacus 1960, regi Stanley Kubrick) KAPTEN BUFFALO (Sergeant Rutledge 1960, regi John Ford) MANNEN SOM SKÖT LIBERTY VALANCE (The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962, regi John Ford) DE PROFESSIONELLA (The Professionals 1966, regi Richard Brooks) HARMONICA - EN HÄMNARE (Once Upon a Time in the West 1968, regi Sergio Leone) Det här programmet sändes första gången i augusti 2011
Today we’re discussing the brilliant 1959 Korean War film Pork Chop Hill. This film manages to turn a tragic and dire moment in history into something of a dark comedy…and also maybe acts as a microcosm of the Korean War and the Cold War experience up to this point – a test of will. Enjoy!

America's post World War II euphoria was shattered in the summer of 1950, when North Korean communist forces invaded democratic South Korea. The Korean campaign of 1950-1953 has been called the "Forgotten War." More than 1.7 million Americans served in Korea and over 35,000 of them died there fighting at places like "Bloody Ridge," "Pork Chop Hill" and "Heartbreak Ridge." These were the treacherous "hill battles" known for some of the most brutal combat in military history. They fought for hills that were sometimes smaller than a football field. In this exciting episode of "War Stories with Oliver North," you'll meet some of the heroic men who survived this unbelievable carnage. You'll hear how one trapped soldier stacked frozen enemy torsos to protect himself from enemy artillery fire. And yet another soldier vividly remembers a face on a hill that haunts him today. And you'll meet the man who would later be portrayed by screen legend Gregory Peck in the classic war drama, "Pork Chop Hill."
