We complete our second round of 1930 on Studios Year by Year with Universal. This time around we've got two auteur entries, Lewis Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front, and a much deeper cut, Tod Browning's eccentric crime drama Outside the Law. We discuss All Quiet as emblematic of the Laemmele Jr. era before turning to Browning's tense, messy melodrama, with a powerhouse performance by the scandal-plagued Mary Nolan. A fine finale to another trip through 1930 with the Hollywood Studios!  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: Universal Recap 0h 15m 58s: ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT [dir. There are very few extra-special films in the history of cinema that not only stand the test of time, they really changed the way we look at history in general ... fictional films that make us see real life in a truly different manner.  Lewis Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front did just that. It took our perspective of war and turned it on its head by having us see the world of the enemy soldiers.  This film is so technically brilliant and the acting is first-rate. This is a remarkable piece of filmmaking. However, was this Best Picture winner, in retrospect, still deserving of the honor of best film of 1929/30?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1929/30.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Send us a text

This is a tough one. We cover Lewis Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front, released on April 21, 1930. This is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed (and highly controversial) WWI novel. This is our first film that we are intimately familiar with: Sara has seen it dozens of times. That being said, because Sara lost her brother (and, therefore, Dad his son) in the Iraq war, this review will sound a little different. Fair warning: the subject matter and film are very intense, and we do get personal. Other excellent podcasts that cover All Quiet on the Western Front are History in Film, Best Picture Cast and The Best Pictures Podcast. Episode 45: ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) This week, we discuss the oldest movie remaining: the Best Picture winner from the third Academy Awards (TM) ceremony covering the years 1929-1930. All Quiet on the Western Front is an early sound film based on Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 German novel. The film follows very young men who eagerly sign up for service in World War I. They soon come face to face with the horrors of war. Lewis Milestone directed this classic antiwar film. All Quiet on the Western Front ranks #25 on our countdown.* Join us next week as we jump ahead to 2003 for the fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

“I remember about the rabbits, George.”Capturing Steinbeck and Americana on the Big ScreenHaving been writing novels for 10 years, it made sense that eventually, Hollywood would turn to John Steinbeck's novels as a source for the silver screen. The first film to make the transition was Of Mice and Men, a novella he originally wrote as a ‘playable novel' and then as a play itself. To that end, it was already the perfect size for adapting. And to that end, the film works just as well as the story. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our series on 1940 Academy Award Best Picture nominees with a conversation about Lewis Milestone's 1939 film Of Mice and Men.Here's a hint at what we talk about. For a relatively simple story, a lot happens and the story works through a variety of topics. How does the story handle a character with an intellectual disability and what does it say about those who take care of others, whether it's this character or an aging dog? What about race relations? (To that end, it may be less pointed than the book but the film still feels like it handles race better than Gone With The Wind does.) The script changes how Mae – the only female character in the book and the only one with any real presence in the film – fits into the story. Here, we get a sense of the tragedy of this character, which does a lot to paint the gender differences in this place at this time. There's also the moralistic, religious, and humanistic angles we discuss. The casting is fantastic. Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr. play our two leads and deliver complex, compassionate performances that are the beating heart of this film. Betty Field plays Mae and rounds the character out with resonance and depth that never were on Steinbeck's pages, even if possibly inferred. The rest of the cast fits impeccably into their roles. Lewis Milestone directs and handles the story effectively and efficiently. And having Aaron Copeland score the film only enhances its feel of Americana. This film stands strong as a version of this film that's worth remembering. It's definitely one of the best films of the year and certainly worthy of its Best Picture nomination. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. A brand-new venture begins as the guys start conquering the 100 Greatest War Movies of All-Time (according to PASTE Magazine) by starting out with a rather important one - the 1930 adaptation of book-to-silver screen All Quiet on the Western Front. The guys talk about how such a vehemently anti-war film in 1930 must have been quite a sight to see and discuss the censorship of the film throughout the world, the modern filmmaking techniques that even Steven Spielberg must've taken note of for his films, the strategic use of older actors playing the main teenage characters, the fascinating story behind the dying french soldier in the trenches and much, much more.   Next week: Hacksaw Ridge. Our Warner Brothers 1943 episode is a very special one, a Popular Front anti-Nazi double feature, the Stalinist propaganda film Mission to Moscow (directed by Michael Curtiz) and Lewis Milestone's drama about Norwegian resistance to the Nazi occupation, Edge of Darkness. We attempt (as complete non-experts!) to lay out the stakes involved in the case made by Mission to Moscow and discuss the circumstances of the film's production and the impact it made on Hollywood. Then we move on to Milestone and screenwriter Robert Rossen's depiction of what it takes to form a successful resistance movement—in this case led by a subdued Errol Flynn and a steely Ann Sheridan. Come to find out how Dave and Elise would have felt about living through Stalin's Five-Year Plans, stay to find out whether or not they would have been quislings.

Kenny and Mike open the 5th season of Faithspotting by discussing the film and faith issues spotted in the latest film version of Erich Maria Remarque's 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front. The 1930 film won the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar for Lewis Milestone.  the 2022 film, directed by Edward Berger and staring Felix Kammerer as Paul Baumer and Albrecht Schuch as veteran Stanislaus Katczinsky. All Quiet on the Western Front follows the 17 year old German student Paul, and his classmates who, whipped into a war frenzy by their school master, volunteer to serve in the German army in the last year of the war. Told they would be marching into Paris in a matter of weeks, the boys are driven to the stalemate that is the trench warfare of the first world war. The film also depicts the contrasts between those who fight in the trenches and the Generals who make decisions with little to no regard for the lives and welfare of the soldiers in the trenches. Kenny and Mike compare the film favorably with some of the great films depicting war, Saving Private Ryan, 1917, and Paths of Glory. All Quiet on the Western Front is German submission for the Best International Film Oscar for the 2023 Academy Awards. Faith Issues Spotted: The purpose and need for the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and Plain in Matthew and Luke 6, and Paul's teaching in Romans 12. Disciples of Jesus are called to love enemies and return hate and persecution with love and forgiveness.  Followers of Christ are called to seek and live for the Kingdom of God by living by Righteousness rather than the ways and expectations of the ways of the world.  The film also echoes the need for the teaching of Galatians 3:28, that disciples of Jesus are all one, united in Christ, and no longer Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or gree. Christians, as the Israelites are residents and aliens of the worldly nations and citizens of the Kingdom of God. All Quiet on the Western Front is rated R for Violence.

Schneider argues that the oft-revived, oft-edited book musical, Anything Goes, houses a depth of social and political satire that was so topical and current upon its premiere that it is regularly overlooked by artists and audiences approaching the work. An in-depth analyses of Cole Porter's lyrics for select list songs in the show reveal commentary on American pop culture which align with the themes in the piece and suggest characters' milieu but, when studied more closely, hint at more subversive implications and taboo practices. The breakdowns demonstrate how a close reading of Anything Goes' score may provide readers with a sense of Porter's views on American life as well as his prowess as a lyricist. Robert W. Schneider holds academic appointments at Penn State University, New York Film Academy, and Mount Union University, as well as serving as the Artistic Director for The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company and as an original programming producer at Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City. In this Studios Year by Year episode, 1936 begins with Paramount, and we take a look at two movies about gun-running that star Gary Cooper, but have little else in common (despite using the same cinematographer). We don't find much to love about Cecil B. DeMille's tribute to Wild West mythology, The Plainsman, starring Gary Cooper as an insufficiently hirsute Wild Bill Hickock and Jean Arthur as a whip-happy Calamity Jane; but Dave waxes enthusiastic about Lewis Milestone's The General Died at Dawn, an off-kilter Popular Front movie that's half-Hitchcock espionage romance, half-poetic realist manifesto. Today we're taking a look at Holiday (1938), arguably the most understated of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn's four films together. We discuss the early years and muses of playwright Philip Barry, Holiday's role in launching Hepburn's career, her contentious but unwavering friendship with director George Cukor, and we finally have a legitimate reason to talk about Lew Ayres — plus Candice serves up another edition of her Puppet Corner and tackles the ultimate question: is it weird that Edward Everett Horton lived with his mom? Candice would like to clarify that she is aware she mixed up Lewis Milestone and Jacques Tourneur in her Night of the Demon (1957) anecdote and is suitably repentant. Please don't haunt us, Jacques Tourneur. We return to the trenches of the first World War to consider Sam Mendes’ 1917 within the greater history of World War I films generally, and as a companion to Peter Weir’s GALLIPOLI specifically. Following some debate over whether 1917’s continuous shot gimmick makes it more or less emotionally affecting, and an attempt to parse the film’s attitudes about war, we look at these two films in tandem to consider what they have to say about the failures of leadership in wartime, their respective depictions of young male friendship and communication, and to what extent each registers as an anti-war film. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar. "You’re just in time for the jokes." Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. were a part of what people called ‘The Rat Pack,’ a group of friends who all started hanging out regularly back at Humphrey Bogart’s and Lauren Bacall’s place. The members changed over time, but Sinatra, Martin and Davis always seemed to be the core trio. The three only appeared in a handful of films together, and the one they’re most known for is the heist film Ocean’s 11. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our Ocean’s series with Lewis Milestone’s original 1960 Rat Pack film, Ocean’s 11. We talk about why the film doesn’t hold up very well for today’s audience and how it really takes someone who was much more connected to the Rat Pack group to really connect with this film today. We look at the script and its shift from drama to comedy, and why perhaps that shift during development left the script largely feeling disjointed and disconnected. We discuss the cast and try to answer why they’re largely uninteresting and unlikeable. We chat about the ending of the film and debate whether it’s effective or not. And we touch on the songs in the film – notably “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” – and stew on why it wasn’t recognized by the Academy. It’s a film that unfortunately feels very dated, which means it may only appeal to audiences who really were fans of the Rat Pack. That doesn’t stop us from having a great conversation about it! So check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Lewis Milestone’s ground-breaking sound film epic treats WWI not as an allegory, as many of its predecessors had, but as a painfully human story, showing the hopes and fears of a group of young men being thrust into battle. While in no way an obscure film, it had been cut to ribbons by a variety of editors over the years until it was merely a shell of its former self. Enter The Library of Congress Motion Picture Conservation Center, which worked diligently for more than five years to restore this magnificent film as close as possible to its original form.
