Yay, episode 20 and I'm celebrating by bringing in my first guest, Craig Wealand, host of Aprender Inglés con Reza y Craig, a podcast that teaches English as a foreign language. I co-hosted En clave de podcast with Craig, and we learned loads, about podcasting and about the podcast-sphere in Spain, where Craig is based. Craig's show is aimed at mainly Spanish speakers with an intermediate or advanced level of English, who want to improve it. They cover grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, they give listening practice... 15.05 MINSFeedback is so important for a podcaster and Craig's show gets a lot of it. Their listeners tend to get in touch when they have a question or a suggestion for a topic. Pilar gets lots of feedback for Gastronostalgia, but it's all from friends and family, so she's waiting for the listener pool to evolve. 19.36 MINSPilar wants to know what Craig's recording set up looks like, as Reza goes to his house to record. By the way, Craig is very proud that they've never missed a weekly episode in all these years! During the pandemic when they recorded online, the challenge was to get good audio quality at Reza's home, because he's not set up for recording. Craig has a set of PR40 microphones and some Samson Q2Us for guests. He used to have a DBX 286s audio processor, which blocks out some of the breathing sounds, but now he uses a Rodecaster Pro. He also has a portable set up. They sit at opposite sides of the desk, to avoid bleeding from one microphone to the next. They rely heavily on facial and body gestures to guide the conversation. The whole experience is a social occasion for them, and you can hear that in the conversation. 30.45 MINSCraig runs the final mp3 file through Otter.io, and offers the transcript for his Patrons. Pilar wants to know how much work Craig does on the text file to correct the script, which also has some Spanish words of course. As an English teacher, he corrects a lot of the punctuation! Craig does the quality control as he's working on the transcript. 39.06 MINSCraig recently hit episode 400! And they've committed to another 400 episodes more! It's important to celebrate the different milestones as you progress through your podcast, because it's not easy to podcast consistently, but it's difficult to come up with different ways of marking these episodes. For episode 400, they talked about the different verb tenses. 48.13 MINS Given that they were recording in March 2022, Pilar wants to know how Craig deals with current affairs in the show, when things happen that are very much on the public's mind. They try to avoid them as they risk not making the show evergreen. However, they did record some episodes specifically about these events after people asked for them, like Brexit or the pandemic. Pilar asks Craig whether he's ever thought of giving up the podcast, he hasn't! Even during difficult times, they've managed to make that weekly commitment. To end the episode, Craig shares a memorable moment, when he met a loyal listener from Chile when he visited Valencia. Connect with Craig: Or look for Ingles podcast in your podcast app, or visit the website https://www.inglespodcast.com/ or connect on Twitter, where he is If you're thinking of starting your own podcasting adventure, I recommend Buzzsprout as host - click here for my affiliate link, which also gets you a little discount, and Riverside FM for recording, which you can access through this other affiliate link.

My guest is Michelle Levitt - Creative Marketing Director at Heil Sound and podcast producer. She has performed many roles in podcasting over the years including being CEO of her own podcast studio in Buffalo, NY. NOTE: Post-production on this episode was done by PES graduate Jesse McCune! Great job, Jesse! NOTE-2: On next week's Daily Goody episode, I’ll be demonstrating and comparing the Heil PR30 and PR40! We discussed SO MUCH, including: In-ear monitors: “Ultimate Ears” Capital Studio Reference Allen and Heath ZED-10 mixer (uses no EQ, effects or pre-processing when recording) iMac computer Adobe Audition Various Heil microphones including the PR30 and PR40 Pop filter: BSW Re-pop (fits the PR40 and PR30 nicely) When demoing microphones at shows or online she doesn't use any EQ or compression because she wants people to hear each microphones individual character. Check out the presentation Michelle did titled Microphone Technology: Understanding Your Sound Her advice to hosts who move around too much demonstrating bad mic technique: Put your chin or nose on the windscreen to always keep close to the mic. Also wear headphones so you can hear your volume change if/when you drift off-mic which will remind you to get back on mic. Recently launched PR37 microphone -- a dynamic mic for Live sound Bob Heil doing Live sound for the Grateful Dead, The Who, early ZZ Top, etc. even though he came from a broadcast background. Heil Sound started in the 60s as a music store -- Ye Olde Music Shoppe (sp?) Sony HD camera and running her local audio through Cam Link 4k thru HDMI cable Thanks for being a great guest and sharing so much with us, Michelle!
The Yellow Studio circa September 2019 It only took one day. To dismantle the Yellow Studio. It took a small generous community of podcast supporters. To help make it become a reality. Rode Rodecaster Pro now residing inside The Yellow Studio The donors are now on a special email list where I've been keeping them updated. This group will continue to remain special and enjoy some inside updates. It's just one small way I can thank you for making the Rode Rodecaster Pro possible. Now, let's geek out just a little bit for those of you interested in the technicalities of podcasting. For the rest of you, bear with me. Years ago when I built The Yellow Studio there were basically two methods or workflows used in podcasting. The first was by far the most popular because it was the least expensive route, RECORDING. To be fair, all podcasts are recorded. That became the very definition of the medium - serialized, subscribable audio content. People could listen at will. On their own timetable. It was all pretty slick and we were as excited to get an email as we were to get a new episode of our favorite podcast. RECORDING methodology just required a microphone and some software (much of it free). To gussy up the sound you needed fancier software. This also meant you spent time editing. The first recording wouldn't necessarily be the final version. This workflow demanded significant after-the-fact work. BROADCASTING was the other methodology. This wasn't nearly as popular because it required hardware. And hardware was (still is) expensive. The benefits are high. The minute you hit "record" the sound is recorded digitally exactly as it will sound when listeners hit "play." Other than editing for content - not for sound quality - it's more of a "what you hear is what you get" process. I instantly wanted to go the BROADCAST route because I preferred to put my work in ahead of hitting the record button. It wasn't about avoiding work. At least not for me. It was about when to do that work. I wanted to spend time doing the work ahead of recording, not afterward. This meant investing in gear. Thankfully, I had the ability to make the investment. And I had some expert help in figuring out what I should get. Click here for the episode I recorded in 2015 to answer the persistent question, "What does your studio look like?" I embarked on finding and assembling equipment that was mostly broadcast quality. Built to withstand hours and hours of non-stop operating without any problems. In short, I was building a small 2-mic station with just about everything other than a transmitter. My transmitter was going to be the Internet. The microphones came first. Two Heil Sound PR40 microphones. Others picked them because of longtime broadcaster/podcaster, Leo Laporte. Leo is a tech guy who has enjoyed radio and Internet success. He used the Heil PR40. Well, I didn't know of Leo when I got the PR40s. But I had heard of Bob Heil because I was very into music. I also had (still have it) a fondness for the sound of great condenser microphones, but I knew my space wouldn't be ideal for a condenser mic because they pick up EVERYTHING. My space was going to be pretty solid for recording, but it wasn't going to be like a professional voice booth (commonly used by voiceover artists) or like a professional recording studio with extensive sound isolation. Enter the PR40. Its large diaphragm has condenser mic qualities in a dynamic mic. Two Heil PR40s, each on its own boom arm and mounted inside its own shock mount. Those were the first items purchased. Next came the coveted Aphex 230 microphone preamps. Radio people and voiceover artists alike have run to the Aphex sound for years. Microphones have to be plugged into something that can provide enough gain so you get sound. Enter the preamps. The Aphex 230s - one for each mic - came next. They were among the first items installed in the six-unit gear rack.

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Had my own personal tech bubble burst. Ended up with a new iPhone 8+, A new Router (the old one was 11 years old!) and just now found out my compressor/Limiter/Gate is 1/2 dead. Oh well. I moved the studio back down to the Office in the basement and recorded this using the PR40 mic instead of the headset I've been using for a while. Let me know what you think of the sound.

On episode 100 of The Bandrew Says Podcast, I celebrate the centennial episode of this show. I talk about how I failed in 2017, my goals for 2018, my story of quitting drinking, and my favorite tech of 2017. Let's have an honest discussion about detoxing and how much time is really required in order to detox your body. I think you would be shocked to know how long I've been on my journey to restore my health. I'm a witness that nature has the answer, but she does take her time.

Today I want to share what I do to put together an episode. My example will be the the latest episode of the Logical Weight Loss Podcast. I also do a podcast microphone shootout with microphones in the $300 range (last week we did a shootout with microphones that are under $100) This Week's Sponsor: Emerald City Productions This week's show is sponsored by Emerald City Productions. Get your podcast edited and sounding great with this awesome special. Your first four episodes will be $15 each (after that they go to the regular price of $40). Check them out at www.emeraldcitypro.com/sop Because of My Podcast I Got A New Job: Super Joe Pardo Joe Pardo is the man behind the Dreamers Podcast, and also the organizer of Podcast MidAtlantic. Today Joe shares how his podcast got him invited to an event. At that event he got to meet some influencial people. Those people got to know Joe, and through his podcast they knew what his credentials were, and offered him a job. Find Joe at SuperJoePardo.com Being the Scenes Of Making a Podcast Episode So I had someone who was surprised at the amount of work that might go into a podcast. So this week as I prepared to publish an episode of the Logical Weight Loss Podcast, I took notes. There is one key point here. Length of time spent on and episode does NOT equal more downloads. You can spend all day working on content that doesn't connect with you audience. So here is what I did. First based on the ideas in the book [easyazon_link identifier="0849921902" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Secrets of Dynamic Communications: Prepare with Focus, Deliver with Clarity, Speak with Power[/easyazon_link] I came up with my main idea. Which is, "Based on mainstream media, it is easy to feel out of place if you are alone for the holidays. This along with the numerous activities of the holidays can lead to stress, and stress can lead to emotional eating." That is where I started. Here is a little confession. Last year I was "Alone" for the holidays. It turned out it wasn't that bad. Different? Sure. Bad? Nope. I wanted to help anyone who might be feeling down for the holidays. So I set out for strategies and insights for those who are alone on the holidays. I started with Google. I looked through about 10 articles, and ended up reading five. I pulled from my own experiences. I looked into resources for people who really were in a bad place and then made sure they were legit. I then went down a rabbit hole, when I found iPrevail. A pretty cool website that offers live chat for those who need to talk, and for those who want to go deeper, the offer some online courses. Intrigued, I signed up and took one. Note: This wasn't needed to complete the episode, but I always go with the thought "If it interests me, it probably interests my audience." I then looked at the holidays, and tried to find things that might be entertaining. I injected some humor to stop the episode from being so dark. I found examples I thought people could relate to (overly gushy Jewelry commercials), decorating a Christmas Tree, and weird family members. All of these to point out that the holidays are not a world of splendor filled with Rainbows and Lollipops. I took some time to figure out what topics I wanted to hit first. In other words, I tried to take the smattering of ideas and organize them into a stream of ideas that flowed nicely. I also through in a quick segment on an egg cooker I recently purchased. Finally I recorded it. My show notes were pretty done as I now make my show notes first to organize my thoughts. I recorded directly into my [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCXMBES" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Zoom H5 Four-Track Portable Recorder[/easyazon_link] , and then took that recording and put it into Hindenburg Journalist ,and added the intro and outro music along with some transition music. If you need music check out podcastingresources.com. I uploaded the file to Libsyn.com and copied and pasted the file into my Wordpress (as this is an old site, I'm still using the PowerPress plugin, if this was a new show I would use the Libsyn plugin). Use the coupon sopfree when signing up at Libsyn.com to get a free month (in addition to the current month) . Podcast Microphone Shootout $300 Range All prices are based on Amazon. Audio Techncia BP40 (Full Loaded $547) Microphone #1 Was [easyazon_link identifier="B00VXSVF6G" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Audio Technica BP40 Large-Diaphragm Dynamic Broadcast Microphone[/easyazon_link] is $349. The [easyazon_link identifier="B011VJOU8Q" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Audio-Technica AT8484 Shockmount for BP40[/easyazon_link] is an additional $99. I would recommend the Rode PSA1 Arm ($99) Heil PR40 ( Fully Loaded $495) Microphone #2 Was the [easyazon_link identifier="B000SOYOTQ" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Heil PR-40 Dynamic Studio Recording Microphone[/easyazon_link]. There is a nice bundle with a boom arm and shock mount [easyazon_link identifier="B00T6JBAUA" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Heil Sound PR 40 Dynamic Cardioid Studio Microphone Bundle with PRSM Shock Mount, PL2T Overhead Studio and Broadcast Boom Mount and Microphone Cable[/easyazon_link] for $479. You would still need a pop filter or Wind Screen I had set the volume the same for all microphones and found them all were about the same. You might want to pick up a Fet head to boost the signal of the PR40 Electrovoice RE320 ( fully Loaded $507) Microphone #3 is the [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCN83VI" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]EV RE320 Variable-D Dynamic Vocal and Instrument Microphone[/easyazon_link] which costs $294. The [easyazon_link identifier="B003BQ2DKK" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Electro-Voice 309A Suspension Shockmount (for RE20 or RE27ND)[/easyazon_link] is $99. Here again you need a pop filter, or a Windscreen and a Rode PSA1 boom arm. Why Did We Hear Microphone #3 Twice? (the RE320) because it has a bass roll off switch, and for me (my opinion) I thought that was the best of the tree. The first two (to my ear) sounded almost identical. I love the shock mount for the BP40 (it is specially made fpr the microphone and makes getting the mic in and out super easy. According to my kitchen food scale, the RE320 was the heaviest at 1.7 lbs, the BP40 was 1.66 lbs, and the PR40 was only 13.7 oz. Here again, there is no bad choice. I use the Eletrovoice RE320, and none of the other microphones moved me to lose this mic. In the end the difference between the three was minimal in my non "audio snob" ears. How Podcasting Helped My First TV Appearance I was interviewed on the Golden Opportunities show this week (it will air at 11:30 AM EST on Channel 3 in Cleveland on December 11). Here was the process: The goal was to explain podcasting to people over 55. I had a phone call with the show runner and we talked for 10 minutes. From that the show runner picked the parts that she liked, and explained the answers that I provided that fit their audience. I didn't have to memorize the answers (but I more or less did). The segment would be four questions. I practiced the night before, and I practiced the morning before. On the way up to Cleveland, I kept botching at least one answer. I wasn't blowing it, but it wasn't smooth. I came up with words that would trigger a response that would help me remember the answers. I had a feeling I might "mess up" a little bit. In the end I did slightly have a flub, but because of podcasting I caught it, clarified and continue. I didn't freak out. All those "Ask the Podcast Coach" live sessions on Saturday helped me keep my cool. Podcast Glossary "F" Feed A feed is a file that contains all the details of a podcast. The feed is often generated by your media host, or plugin, and is read by apps that then use that details to show the details on a screen (computer, phone, or tablet). FeedburnerFeed burner is tool from Google that can take an RSS feed and add additional items to the feed. You also get stats on how many people are subscribed. Feedburner is deemed by many experts to be out of date and a prime cause for many trouble tickets for podcasting hosting providers (it often stops updating your feed and has been shown to scramble the show description and the episode descriptions). While it was once recommended in 2006, most podcast consultants tell their customers to steer clear of this now outdated tool. FetHead Fethead is a microphone amplifier that delivers 22 DB of clean gain to your microphone. So if you are using a microphone that needs a “push” to be louder, then you might try plugging your microphone into the Fethead. FTP FTP stands for file transfer protocol. In a nutshell, there are two ways to upload files. Http stands for hypertext transfer protocol. Of those two ftp is faster. It requires a separate program to upload files. Apple's "Podcasts" app on IOS crashed for almost everyone yesterday. Apple is going to be making the PODCASTS app, one of the default aps in IOS8! Good news for podcasters! Soundcloud for podcasting Why you shouldn't use Soundcloud (or any other proprietary service) as your only point of presence for your podcast. it's in beta (after 3 years?!?!) I don't trust beta. It costs some money and it's limited on the TOTAL uploads, not monthly like other services (like blubrry or libsyn) They mess with your file. What you upload is not exactly what your listeners will download. (even if it is just a filename change) If you use their RSS feed, you will have trouble keeping YOUR audience when you decide to leave. One cool thing they do have is the player, but I'm guessing there will be players like that coming out for other services / systems soon. Q: My latest podcast episode is not listed on iTunes and it's been a week. What's going on? A: In the case of this questioner, it was their feed size was too big. Here are some ways to make the feed size smaller: 1. Reduce the number of episodes in the feed 2. Write less text in your posts for podcast episodes 3. In powerpress, turn on “Feed maximizer” I know most people want to have EVERY episode in the feed, but in most cases it's not needed. Q: If I'm going to add a digital recorder to my audio chain, why not use one of the cheap recorders like the Zoom H1 for $99? A: There is no reason not to use the h1. But, look at the recorder specs of any other cheap recorders and make sure it has 2 things. 1. Line level input 2. Records in Stereo in .wav format (uncompressed) Recording to mp3 can cause quality problems. Even on the more expensive recorders. The Zoom H1 would be a great little studio recorder for backup or even the main recording. R-05 for $199 Q: What is the best Microphone for me? A: I get this one a LOT! It depends on your voice, your studio, your budget and your preferences. We talk about this a lot and we podcasters (most of us) are gear heads. If your budget allows, try a bunch of mics.. you can always trade, sell them later. I'm going to test 2 inexpensive mics here. You tell me if you think it was worth the $300 for my PR40 (other than it looks really cool). The first one I'm going to test is the $59.99 ATR2100 from Audio-Technica The other one is even cheaper! The $24.99 Behringer XM8500 The cheap mic :) Love it anyway. As you can see, you can go as cheap or as expensive as you need and still do a great job of podcasting with good audio.. No excuses for crappy audio :) Heil PR40 - $327.00 - my Old standby Use the promo code "nobs" for a free month of podcast hosting at any level at blubrry.com The promo code also works for blubrry premium statistics 1 month free by using the promo code nobs.
